Inspiration can come from weird places. This song is an example of that.   Parts of this tune are inspired by Blondie and Right Said Fred, although hearing it in the mix may be difficult. No kidding.

The Void

A Void is a horrible thing.

This is especially true when the void is in someone. Or when the void is the emptiness one feels when trying to create something.

Some call it a block. Others a lack of motivation.

I only know it sucks. It sucks really bad.

The worse part of the void is that it actively works against your best efforts to fill it. It strives to maintain.

Do not let it maintain.

Do not let the momentum drop. Do not let the inertia end.

A body in motion tends to stay in motion.

A body at rest is giving in to the void.

Destroy the void.

Move.

Create.

Be dynamic.

Do not let the void remain empty.

Fill it. Fill it even if all you have is crap. The more crap you fill into the void the better your chances of transcending the crap.

You will find the gems.

You may have to polish your crap to make a gem, but that is the price. Volume fills the void. Polishing makes the volumes smell like a rose.

She was showing signs of confusion and having accidents in the house. Elway never had accidents. The problem is these symptoms could have been from the ear infection, or a reaction to the new thyroid medication. It turns out it was her brain, and it was getting bad quick. On Saturday Morning Elway had a seizure. We rushed her to the hospital and they got to work. They were thinking epilepsy.

We will never know as her condition deteriorated so fast there was no time to figure out what was causing this.

We got the call from the Vet hospital at 3:41 am Sunday. Elway was in a continuous seizure and they could not bring her out. We decided to end her suffering.

Elway was a great dog, and an even better friend. The things we find we are already missing the most are the things that actually annoyed us a bit. Her not letting us sleep in, having to put items on the couches when we left the house so she would not sleep on them, and so on. Also all the sweet things she did

We never met anyone that did not love Elway once they got to know her. She had a tough start, we rescued her after someone badly burned her as a puppy. She had her enormous scar as proof. She still loved everyone she came into contact with. She never held a grudge.

We will miss her so much. We are getting her cremated. We are keeping some of the ashes and spreading the rest at her favorite walk spot, the boardwalk portion of the Buffalo Road Sport Park.

This is so tough.

That stands as its own paragraph. I will repeat. I love Radiohead.

I don’t dislike Glee. It is not in my orbit. I just don’t “Glee.” ( I know that is nowhere near grammatically correct, but it fits)

Some music that is licensed to Glee fits the show perfectly. Sometimes artists do not want their music associated with the show. Either way, that is usually fine with me. Whatever floats the boat or gets the results or ratings or sales.

I am fine with it.

Again, I do not feel bad that Glee exists. I just don’t “Glee.” (Still not grammatically correct) For those that do “Glee,” I am happy you like the show.

I do love Radiohead though. That is what makes this hurt. If ever a song screamed, “do not license me to Glee,” it would be their iconic song, Creep. Radiohead should have become one of the Glee holdouts.

But, they did not.

Radiohead have sort of jumped the shark. Not because the have lost relevance, or become soft, or lost their edge. They have hopped over–not a full jump–by making a licensing decision.

The travesty is below.

If you are a longtime fan of the show, or reader of this blog, or fan of Senator Jaiz, or the monologues, or–you get the picture–you know the Indie Music Blast had a great run last year. Not as good as the glory days between 2005 and 2008, but it was feeling like the old days again. Then? BAM! Nothing, nada, zip. I did not burn out like before. The catastrophe hit and sapped all the energy I had left to produce the show.

Alright, I will let you in on the catastrophe. I lost everything related to producing the show in a hard drive crash. I know that sounds amateur. Go ahead, say it, why did you not have back ups?

I got you on this. I did have backups, on two separate external hard drives. What happened next shocked even me, and I don’t shock easily. Within two hours of my hard drive crash in my trusted SexywhiteHP, both the external drives met their demise as well. I freaked out a bit.

I lost all of my show bumpers from eight years of producing. I lost all my show intros and effects. I lost all the music I had collected from the indie artists I had played over the years. Some of those artists are no longer around. I felt like crap. The reason I stopped producing is I did not have the energy to start at square one again. I could have ripped the bumpers and intros from old shows but the sound would have suffered. I could have remade them. I could track down the music again.

Instead I focused on Senator Jaiz and my music production, my monologues, freelancing, and my new museum job.

Remember the old days?

I am not superstitious, but this was a bad break. I don’t look at it as a sign, but this sucked the life out of the project worse than when things went bad with Mevio. I did not feel it anymore.

If you have been around any amount of time, you know I rarely stay down. this is no exception. The drive to produce the Indie Music Blast is BACK!

Still, some things are changing. The old show is gone. The recordings are still up, yes, but the old spirit is gone. I am different, the world is different, and thanks to the catastrophe, if things were the same I could not do a damn thing about it anyway.

I am producing again, but things are different. That is what I am sticking with. Stay tuned and see what is coming. This is not your old RfL Indie Music Blast, that is for sure.

Life is like a roller coaster, just try not to scream like a little girl. That is the philosophy I am embracing from now on. Life does what it wants regardless, so hold on tight and flow with it.

Maybe one day I will stop fighting the current, new philosophy or not.

On that note, I have had trouble getting my personal productions going full blast. I am hoping to tackle that this weekend. I intend to do the few maintenance things I have to do around the house plus get some production done. Things on the list include finalizing the script for episode 6 of the Animated Adventures, get a song DONE, practicing some DJ sets, and a little filming as well.

I will do this!

I dusted off my little handheld HD camera and I intend to start documenting a lot more. Then edit this stuff into little films. This is not priority one like music and animation, but it is still a priority.

I am not complaining in any way. I never thought I would work somewhere I love as much as the museum. It is just that I have not devoted enough time to getting balance yet. That is what this weekend is all about. Finding the balance I need to get my personal work done.

Effie and I for similar reasons have decided to cut down our television consumption. We are also weeding out other things that keep us from getting personal things done. We both suffer from putting too much into work and not enough into our personal, and couple, projects.

So yes, not a real problem at all, just a puzzle to solve. Once we do that it will be smooth again. Smooth is good.

On Wednesday the NC Museum of Natural Sciences hosted the reception for the event. This included a stand-up performance by our curator of the Daily Planet Theater and science comedian Brain Malow. I worked production on this event with Mike Garr and Eric Knisley. It was a fun evening.

On Thursday I took a freelance job working the open mic event at Cypress Manor in Cary, NC. I started with a one hour and 30 minute DJ set while everyone got settled in. This was fun. The event then shifted to the open mic. Let me say this, when scientists let loose, they really let loose. Seriously. They are a different breed.

After the open mic, I got the chance to play Gangnam Style four times while  20 to 30 people took over the stage each time. There is video of this that I will post later. This was a highlight of the evening, even more so than the scientist in the lemur suit dancing to the Move It song from Madagascar. This was probably the case because the lemur guy was also going Gangnam Style.

Now, this is not to say that the Thursday event went totally smooth. For five minutes or so between the DJ set and the starting of the open mic, I had some pretty embarrassing tech troubles. Still, this was a few minutes in a very successful evening. I wish I knew why the five minutes bother me so much more than the 3 hours and fifty some odd minutes that went great. It is crazy.

I have a new job. A dream job. I now work at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. I am on the Television/Emerging Media Team and I am loving every minute of it! We do everything from museum video, to directing the presentations, to working on the multimedia exhibits, to, well all the cool things!

On top of that, I organized the Triangle Benefit for Newtown along with Alice Osborn and that went off great. I will post more about that once I get the video edited. It was a fun night for a good cause.

Boxing? After being in injury mode for nine months or so, I am now free and clear to start training again. First goal? Get rid of the pounds I put on while being injured, laid off, and depressed from both. I probably won’t be getting back to full fight training for some time. Maybe middle of the year.

As for Senator Jaiz, I will be mastering the tunes I have and releasing them as an EP. The album dimensional chaos is changing. I was laid off and injured thus without a job and unable to train while recording the original tracks. For some reason the tracks were all happy sounding. Now that I am in a dream job and cleared to train again I find my music now is more dark in sound. How is that for weird!

So, the original tracks will be a low-priced EP soon. Some of the tracks will make it to the actual Dimensional Chaos album, but I am recording the new stuff now.

As for RfL, things are changing. I am not the same person that started this trip. I still have an urge to create web media, but I think the media has to change. I am no longer charged up about promoting indie tunes and such. I am charged about other things, I just have to figure out exactly what I want to do. Trust in this, it will be fun, no matter what I end up creating. The Indie Music Blast will never completely go away, but priorities are elsewhere now.
