One of the saddest moments in my life. I'm so near the edge of overwhelmed frustration regarding my blog. I just CAN'T seem to move forward with this blog feeling like I'm hacked.

This week I will share a FEW best of Black Non -Fiction

novels.

The month is April, the year is 1961 and Mr. Abraham Bolden is a rookie agent for the Secret Service Chicago field office. He is standing at a post no other agent wanted, the bathroom entrance.

A conversation like this started:

President J.F. Kennedy: Has there ever been a Negro agent on the Secret Service White House detail?

Mr. Bolden replies: Not to my knowledge, Mr. President.

President J.F. Kennedy: Would you like to be the first?

Mr. Bolden with excitment says: yes, sir, Mr. President.

Mr. Abraham Bolden remembers this encounter like it was yesterday.

Today, Mr. Bolden, age 75, has written about being the First African American assigned to the presidential Secret Service detail.

In his book Mr. Bolden meticulously backs up his claim of innocence with a blow by blow chronology of his legal ordeal for the twice tried bribery charges that led him to prison, the price he endured for his commitment to truth and justice. He details how the Secret Service chose to 'quiet' him. He writes about his thoughts and knowledge of the J.F. Kennedy assassination.

Becoming the 'Jackie Robinson of The Secret Service" stated by President J.F. Kennedy, Mr. Bolden continues to fight to have the conviction overturned and his name cleared. He states, "I'm going to always stand up for the truth and justice." (favorite quote of the book.)

The book is a historical read. It's a memoir of an unforgettable true story of bravery and patriotism in the face of bitter hatred and unthinkable corruption.

My favorite character was Mr. Bolden. He was courageous, thorough, and dedicated to his job. I met Mr. Bolden and to hear him tell his story brings tears of grief. He is a very humble man.

My least favorite character was Harvey Henderson. This is why:

"You're a nigger. You were born a nigger, and when you die, you'll still be a nigger. You will always be nothing but a nigger. So act like one!" Henderson spaced the words out slowly for emphasis, but his voice was rising." This novel sits on my bookshelf, "Deep In My Soul".

Mr. Abraham Bolden

After an outstanding career in law enforcement, Mr. Bolden was appointed by JFK to be the first African American presidential Secret Service agent, where he served with distinction. They met by chance when JFK used the men's room to which he had been assigned as security. Bolden was a crucial part of a the Secret Service effort that prevented an attempt to assassinate JFK in Chicago, three weeks before Dallas.

But the dream quickly turned sour when Bolden found himself regularly subjected to open hostility and blatant racism. More of a concern was the White House team’s irresponsible approach to security. While on his tour of presidential duty, Bolden witnessed firsthand the White House agents’ long-rumored lax approach to their job. Drinking on duty, abandoning key posts—this was not a team that appeared to take their responsibility to protect the life of the president particularly seriously.

Soon after the assassination, he received orders that hint at "an effort to withhold, or at least to the color, the truth." He discovered that evidence was being kept from the Warren Commission and when he took action, found himself charged with "conspiracy to sell a secret government file" and imprisoned for more than five years, mostly in the psychiatric ward of the Springfield Medical Center for Federal Prisoners. In September 1969, after a short stint at a prisoncamp in Alabama, Bolden was finally granted parole.

Nearly 45 years later, Abraham Bolden has come forward to tell his story. The Echo from Dealey Plaza is the story of the terrible price paid by one man for his commitment to truth and justice, as well as a shocking new perspective on the circumstances surrounding the death of JFK.

I have to say I'm not a big fan of stories set in the transatlantic slave trade era. You can blame it on watching too many episodes of Roots when I was younger.
However, in this book I like the way the author blended historical fiction with contemporary. I was swept away to another time and place, watching the characters lives unfold moment by moment. I loved the descriptive style of writing. And also the use of Igbo proverbs. The story felt authentic. It reminded me of many cultural aspects of the Igbo people that I'd forgotten while teaching me new ones.

I liked Onaedo. She is strong and bold albeit naive.

My least favourite character was Oguebie whom I thought was greedy, ambitious and ruthless. This is unfortunately a trait that exists in too many people.

Fifteen-year-old Kambili's world is circumscribed by the high walls and frangipani trees of her family compound. Her wealthy Catholic father, under whose shadow Kambili lives, while generous and politically active in the community, is repressive and fanatically religious at home.
When Nigeria begins to fall apart under a military coup, Kambili's father sends her and her brother away to stay with their aunt, a University professor, whose house is noisy and full of laughter. There, Kambili and her brother discover a life and love beyond the confines of their father's authority. The visit will lift the silence from their world and, in time, give rise to devotion and defiance that reveal themselves in profound and unexpected ways. This is a book about the promise of freedom; about the blurred lines between childhood and adulthood; between love and hatred, between the old gods and the new.

Had I not read The Pursuit of Happiness by Douglas Kennedy at the beginning of last year, I would say this is the most emotionally charged and disturbing book I have ever read in my life. But as I have, I can’t help but feel that this book is the African version of the Pursuit of Happiness. What is therefore HOT for me is that I could I could compare this debut novel by Adichie with the likes of writing veterans such as Kennedy.
I love Chimamanda’s writing style. Her language use is simple and yet is constantly weaving rich and colourful emotional tapestries. This brings to mind the overwhelming sadness I experienced as I came to realised the severely abusive conditions under which the mother and children are subjected to by the father, to the extend that he was responsible for two miscarriages and cruel and unusual forms of child discipline. It being an exceedingly patriarchal society, you also come to wonder if this is the norm in most traditional Nigerian households.
I was extremely entertained by some of Kambilli and her grandfathers opinions and prejudices of the missionaries that came to Nigeria with their God.

1.   The pacing of his story is quick, making the book a nice read for a long airplane ride or a rainy afternoon. The characters remain a bit less dynamic, even the central ones (B.J. and Steven), and the masterminds behind the plot don't seem all that interested in their work either. There's a lot to like here -- the plot moves swiftly, and I flipped furiously, wanting to know what happened.  3 Stars (Onlooker Slowdown)
2. The complex plot twists and turns toward a conclusion I never saw coming. If you enjoy psychological thrillers and exotic locals, this is the book for you.  4 stars ( Jusin Harper)
3. Michael Meyer's COVERT DREAMS is an engaging tale that quickly harnesses the reader into the conspiracy and collusion of foreign intrigue. The characters are sympathetic and so well-written that readers will experience their fears and frustration in not being able to break free of a bad dream. But, is it a dream? Meyer keeps his readers on their toes. Don't be too hasty in thinking you have it all figured out. 4 stars (Jessica K)
4. Michael Meyer's Covert Dreams is a winning combination, high octane, thrill ride not to be missed. This story will not disappoint as it sucks you right into these lives from page one and doesn't let go until the last page is turned. 5 stars (D. Everetti.)

MY REVIEW:  I'm not into thriller reads especially mixed with foreign countries, however I did like this novel. The dream that kept invading the character, BJ mind almost grew weary with me but I held on and it made for pretty good reading. The second plot in this story involves character Stan, I kinda took to his misery story better, lol. The author writing skill of manipulating the characters plots was amazing, the characters are well developed, you can sense their frustrations, fears and panic. If you enjoy psychological thriller that travels internationally into the laws of other countries, you will plunge into this mind playing thriller novel.This novel sits on my book shelf as' Pretty darn good read.'

How did you decide upon the name for your novel?

What to name a novel requires a lot of thought. Getting just the right words to convey not only a little of what the book is about but also to tweak the reader’s interest, takes time. I must have gone through fifteen different choices, all of them appealing to me in one way or another, until finally I had the epitome that I needed: COVERT DREAMS said it all for me, the writer.

COVERT DREAMS, my international thriller, is very aptly named. There are two alternating stories that are linked in a horrifying way. The novel begins with a terrible murder back in 1984 that somehow is connected to the disappearance of an American’s spouse in today’s Saudi Arabia. B.J. suddenly starts experiencing increasingly terrifying dreams, all of which seem so realistic. Is he living a nightmare, or is it reality? How can he dream the same dream night after night and know intimate details of Munich, a city in which he has never been? How can he speak German in his dream, a language he does not know? Why does everybody think he is losing it? Is he going crazy?

In the alternating story, Stan Halsey, a newly arrived professor in Saudi Arabia, suddenly discovers that his wife is missing. But how can a woman suddenly disappear in the Saudi Arabian heat, along with every trace of her very existence? Why is there absolutely nothing, not one single detail in any records anywhere, to prove that she is indeed a living person and that her spouse is not crazy for thinking so? Why do both the American government officials and the Saudi Arabian authorities insist that she has never even existed?

What is real, and what is not? Who is really who, and why? What is behind the murder, the kidnappings, and the nightmares all leading up to what end? Dreams indeed play a large part in this novel of suspense, and the word covert plays a significant role. I chose words that would not only provide a bit of a clue as to the content, but which would also entice the reader to want to read the book.

Something Special

Morgan, wanting to fit in with the crowd, teases a large girl and a special-ed kid at school. When she is caught she has to go to the principal’s office. When she finds out how much her teasing hurt her classmates she feels bad. Later, while playing together, Morgan and her cousins all share a secret wish. Morgan wants to be prettier. Drake wants to be taller. Sadie wants longer hair. When she goes to vacation bible school Morgan learns that God made each person just the way they are for a reason, even those kids she laughed at and teased. Just the way they are, is okay and they are all something special to God.

Right Thing

When Morgan lets her best friend, Brook talk her into doing something her mommy tells her not to do, she gets into trouble. But that does not stop Morgan from disobeying her mommy again. When she ignores her mommy and takes her iPod to school, she not only gets in trouble but is badly hurt by one of the older girls. She learns that when she doesn’t obey her parents she is not only letting them down but God too. The next time Brook tries to talk Morgan into doing what she knows is wrong; Morgan decides to do the right thing.

No Fear

Don’t be afraid. Have no fear. That’s what Morgan’s parents and grandparents were always telling her. But she was having a hard time doing what they said as she thought about the big test coming up and wondered if her daddy was on the navy shipped that was recently attacked. When Morgan shares her fears with her mommy, her mommy tells her about the good news from God and about Heaven, Morgan begins to understand why her parents and grandparents are always telling her to have no fear.

I don't understand this! I'm not IT!!
I click on the name (New Hampshire) and its a male by the name of Michael.
it appears he does not write anything. I don't have him as a follower so he does not

My January selection for The Versatile Reading Challenge had to be a book by a Nigerian author. I chosePurple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It is the first book I’ve read by a Nigerian author.

Purple Hibiscus is the story of Catholic family lead by a wealthy husband and father who rules with an iron fist. The story is told by Kambili, the younger of two siblings. Their life is centered around religion and any time not spent praying or attending worship services is dedicated to tasks from a schedule written by the father.

Making the Team
Alec London is a fourth grader whose have a tough time. His dad is the new assistant principal at school; his classmate Tyrod is bullying him; his brother, Antoine is mad with him and his mom is going away for a long period of time because of her job. Through the game of football, lessons from his dad and a story about a man named Joseph, Alec learns that God cares about him and will help him out when he is struggling.
Learning the Rules
Alec feels abandoned by his mom. Now his brother Antoine and their cousin Little P are mad with him. At school when his tries to take up for a new kid in school he gets into trouble. Alec is trying to do his best but he just can’t seem to get things right. When he goes to church on Easter Sunday, the pastor shares a message that helps him to look at everything a different way.
Going the Distance
The school year is ending. Alec is looking forward to sleeping late and no bullying. But dad and mom have other plans for him this summer. Dad wants him to play baseball and mom puts him in an acting camp. He doesn’t want to do either but decides to try anyway. Alec hates baseball but dad won’t let him quit. He loves acting but mom won’t let him continue when he gets a part in a Disney show. Alec is upset with his parents but he learns that even when things don’t go his way he must still obey God by honoring his parents.
Winning the Battle
The summer is over and Alec is back in school. Tyrod has a new friend Zarrick who also bullies Alec and mom is still away. In response to all that's going on in his life Alec begins to act out in school, sleep in class and hang around with the wrong crowd. And, to protect himself, he starts taking karate lessons. With the help of his karate instructor, parents, old friends, Alec learns that being disciplined and learning to respond to things in a way that pleases God are important when it comes to winning the battle.
Taking the Lead
Alec is voted class president and joins the track team. Though Tyrod continues to bully him, Alec tries to become friends. Everything is going well for him until he loses his grandmother. Alec becomes sad and gets off track but running track and working with the Special Olympics kids helps him work through the things happening at home and school. When his team wins the county title Alec thinks about how proud his grandmother was of him for learning how to take the lead.

I like happy endings to stories. I especially like the novels where the author plans a twist and toward the ending its a happily ever after ending you don't expect.

I don't try to predict stories. This way I'm not upset if the ending ends up being otherwise.
Happily Ever After endings are OKAY in my book. As long as the story don't leave me empty and questionable, I'm GOOD.

REVIEW:This was overwhelming!! So many religion beliefs and end of the world theories. The book has a lot of information. If you are not a history or religious buff I don't know it you will get through the entire book.
Inside the book are theories, writings, predictions, and interpretations from various sources: The I Ching, Islamic Interpretations, Catholic prophecies, the Hindu predictions, Maya Byzantine prophecies, and more. The author Bob Thiel also uses the Holy Bible.

The authors research into ancient prophecies led him to the findings that most religious beliefs expects many of the same End of Time events to occur. A few are: economic concerns, solar issues, turmoil, and the rise of a militaristic world leader who will be apposed by 'the secret sect'.

The book included the prediction of the Mayan Calendar, Which financial prophecies will come to pass and when, why the English speaking nations will be invaded sometime after 2012 and the false Age of Truth and the True Age of Peace. Who are the Secret Sects ? What does the The Holy Bible says all about any of this.

Review: Does it all sound a bit alarming? Yes, perhaps. What caught my interest the most is the interpretation of Daniel and Revelation of the Holy Bible. I'm very knowledgeable about those two chapters of the Bible. Those two chapters reveal all one needs to know to help you understand the end of time. Most Christians have not studied the two which goes hand in hand. They are so powerful! I will place those two chapters up against anything any one else writes when it comes to discussing the world and its End Times. All one has to do is study our World History and use those chapters, It reveals quite a bit.

Another interesting section in the book is the "Secret Sect". This is a religious group of people that has full knowledge of what the world will be going through and will begin to inform others of such events. They will also have to flee from prosecution. The author seems to believe that the 'secret sect' are Nazarene's from Philadelphia or should I write the author believe the Nazarene of Philly are the remnant of the true church. This does not mean all faith believing Christians will come from Philly but the 'secret sect' originated from there. Yes, the bible speaks of a peculiar people that keeps his commandments but the novel did not contain enough information that led me to believe as the author wrote.. I don't know what religion belief will be the true faith I just hope to remain true to the end and will not have any problem making a change to follow truth.

The author mentions 'Satan' in the book however I don't recall his name being connected to sections that shows readers the direct involvement Satan has over the world turmoil. People must begin to understand his major role behind all the turmoil in our world today. See, that an issue with predictions that I have, they only seem to go so far and not to the root . The author states quite a few times about a militaristic power that will take over and lose the battle in the end. The author does not make mention that this power is also a religious/spiritual one.

In my opinion this book will help open eyes for those that never thought about such events. This book will spark your interest in wanting to learn more. The author covered some good topics. I wished the subject of identifying who is 666 been more direct. It is good to know the world is not ending in 2012. I don't know why people keep trying to predict this, This is not knowledge anyone will GET!! God spoke that, so I believe.

The book held my interest. I do not agree with everything that is predicted, but the author is darn close to what my studies and lessons have concluded. My personal opinion is not only should one know what is going to happen but WHY is it all happening. Composing all the predictions and theories and writings from religious leaders and etc. took many hours, patience and studying. I respectively applaud the author for this.

If you are wondering about the 'rapture'. 666, The New World Order, false prophets, and etc.

this book will help put some perspective in order.

What would you like readers to take away from your book?

We live in a difficult time that many are confused by. Our time could be considered a "time of transition" as the Hopi Indians indicated or more precisely the "beginning of sorrows" that Jesus spoke of.

I believe that 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect helps demonstrate that there is a "method to all the madness" in the world today and that after all the problems, that peace and love will prevail.

However, while there will be ups and downs, the situation will get quite bad before it gets quite good.

While 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect does explain 2012, its focus is what will happen after this year is over. By correctly explaining what will and will not happen in 2012, it is hoped that the reader will realize that the other predictions it contains will also happen as well. This highly documented book tries to show which Mayan, Islamic, and other predictions do and do not agree with biblically-based ones, so that the reader will understand how world events are expected to play out. Events that will affect their lives and those of their families.

Before writing 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect I was better known for denouncing false prophets than writing about future events. And yes, it is easier to find faults in others than to correctly write about what will happen. As it has turned out, world events have already aligned with at least 20 predictions in 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect.

People who are interested in what will happen, may happen, and will not happen in the future will want to get a copy of 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect.

World events continue to align with properly understood prophecy and so far 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect's track record along that line is better than all known 2012 books.

It is a book for those who have hope and want to have hope, but who also wonder what will happen before the peaceful hope for the future really comes to pass. I believe that 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect helps explain the truth about all of that despite my own limitations.

This book was centered around older brother, Kevin 'Kidd' Jamieson.
Kidd and his younger brother, Ace, were raised by their single mother, Sandra.
Kidd and his brother grew up without much knowledge about their father, Samuel.
Kidd has allowed his anger and resentment for his absentee father to extend toward members on his father side too. When his best friend is killed, his mother convinces him to take up his cousin offer to move to the state of St. Louis. He does and the anger lags with him. Kidd learns that the Jamieson men are not all like his dad. He witness family values among his male cousins but is reluctant to allow them to become apart of his life. Kidd also becomes interested in a christian woman. She sense that Kidd has anger issues and don't know quite how to help him or if she should.
Can Kidd bad boy attitude fall in love with this woman, will he learn to forgive his dad to save his own soul? How long will KIdd allow the hate and resentment of his father invade his personal life? What is his reaction when he is finally told of his dad whereabouts?

Review: This was a good read for me. It was interesting how the author, Pat Simmons, mingled family history into the story line. Once Kidd left his hometown, the true essence of the novel begins to sprout and so did my interest.
Characters: Kevin 'Kidd' was that good looking brotha that was street wise with the mannerism that told you he did have a momma at home. He worked and helped his mother with raising his younger brother.
Sandra: Kidd's mom- a wonderful mother working and raising her sons to be productive young men.
Camereon: Kidd's cousin. The first cousin from Kidd's father side of the family to come into their lives. very determined and likable.
Parke- family man with family values. Invites Kidd to come live with him. Always open to help a family member out in need.
GrannyBB- look out Madear!! much laughter from this character.
The the author presented characters with both strengths and weakness whom readers could easily identify with while keeping the story line interesting. It was refreshing to read about a street wise African American male with negative issues that did not deal with them from a impetus frame of mind.
I must talk Book cover: love this one: a brother in a white tee with a hint of biceps always gets attention, and most definitely a man in a suit always turns heads.The book cover definitely fits the storyline and the protagonist, Kidd.
My first novel from the author, Pat Simmons. I shall seek out the others in this series and other books by this author. This novel sits on my book shelf as a DARN GOOD READ.

The following book was read to meet my reading challenges: The Versatile Reading, Short Stories and A-Z authors.

The Power of a Plate of Rice

Ifeoma Okoye

Summary: A Nigerian woman becomes furious when her boss decides he is not going to pay her wages for time taken off because of her time taken with her hospitalized child. She decides that she will not tolerate this injustice sitting nor standing and seek her own form of satisfactory justice.

Favorite character: Cheta: strong willed, courageous, educator.

Least favorite: Mr. Aziza: a knuckle head, disrespectful, educated and Cheta boss,

Favorite line: Cheta replies about being angry: "Only an angel or an idiot would remain calm in this situation."

I enjoyed reading this novel. I will definitely read other books by the author. I laughed hard while visioning the character of Cheta. How she decided to handle the situation was one great spontaneous moment. It is something I would of done also. My reflections: How the so called common folks are often mistreated. The overall treatment of the women by men puts you in a disgruntle mood. IT was good reading. My rating: A
