Nothing makes me happier than doing all the stationery for an entire event. Therese Saint Clair in Greenwich brought us this amazing project including invitations, escort cards, programs, menus and finally, stationery. It was a beautiful ensemble, using the same monogram and combination of pink, orange and gray letterpress printing.

The invitation was a custom version of Real Card Studio's Margarita invitation, in that we added a second pocket to accommodate additional insert cards. The layout of the invitation was styled after our Parfait invitation, using the large monogram in a soft color. It's a beautiful combination, and the tangerine orange and dark pink give the whole package the summery feel the couple wanted.

Counting down from ten for 2010, coming in at number six this preppy wedding invitation looks perfect for a breezy summer wedding. Formal without being stuffy, the polka dots and bright green make this invitation perfect, while the pocket allows for multiple events for a full weekend of festivities, or details for a modern destination wedding or gorgeous beach wedding.

What really makes this invitation special is the hand lettered names and card titles. A formal yet lively touch that makes it personal. I love how the ampersand printed in green offsets the bride's and groom's names letterpress printed in blue. A simple touch that has a lot of visual impact.

Number seven in our Top Ten countdown for 2010 gets my vote for it's bold color combination of Bronze shimmer, Apple green and hot pink. Just talking about the colors, I wasn't so sure they were going to work together, but all together they create a bold and festive invitation.

Eco-elegant Letterpress Printed Wedding Invitation

Number eight in my Top Ten projects for 2010 came from Signed and Sealed by Steph in Denver, CO. Her bride required eco-friendly papers with at least 30% post-consumer waste content, which was no problem for us to accommodate since most of the papers we carry fall into this category. The folder is made of 100% reclaimed cotton paper (scraps from the garment district, so not post-consumer, but definitely the best use of scrap fabric I've ever seen!), and the invitation is Neenah Paper's Environment Natural White 100% recycled pcw cover stock, letterpress printed in soy based Cocoa ink.

What I really like about this invitation, other than being able to talk about the green-factor of our invitations, is how this beauty looks. The overall design comes from Real Card Studio's Cosmopolitan invitation (no secret that it's my favorite of our designs), but we enlarged it to an eight inch square pocket folder, and instead of the all-caps sans serif modern typesetting we usually do, we got flourishy with Burgues Script.

And the touch that always makes me the happiest about our Cosmopolitan invitation is the pop of color we put in the pocket with the colored reply envelope, usually to match the satin ribbon on the front cover. So happy.

Gala Invitation in Black with Red Edge Painting

This invitation made my Top Ten just because the red and black is so tempting! The red edge on this heavy black card would get anyone's attention, and hopefully did for this Frist Museum fundraiser. Red gloss hand lettering across the top contrasts nicely with the stately white typesetting.

Designed by Lauren at Rock Paper Scissors in Tennessee, this was the first project Real Card Studio has attempted with edge painting.

For the placecards and menus, we did another 3-ply card with black on the outside and red in the center, and I think I may like how those turned out even more than the red edge painting! You'll be seeing more of these great paper combinations from Real Card Studio in 2011!

Wedding Program for an Modern Indian Wedding

Of all the new pieces for the latest update to Real Card Studio's wedding invitation collection, this is the one I am most excited about. Inspired by the silhouette wedding party program we did for Kara Gordon, owner of Magnificent Milestones in Chicago, I asked the talented Juli Douglas of Juli Douglas Illustration to create an illustration of an Indian wedding party. For inspiration, I sent her my copies of South Asian Bride magazine, and then left the details up to her, knowing she would of course exceed my expectations. I couldn't be more pleased.

Why an illustrated wedding party? I'll admit, until I designed a similar program for a friend of mine, I didn't realize the impact having even generic silhouettes of the wedding party connected the people on stage with who they were in the program. I always thought it was just as easy for wedding-goers to look down a list of bridesmaids, and generally follow the order from top to bottom as they stood further from the center, from the bride and groom. But I witnessed the reaction people had to having pictures with a line to the corresponding names, and it was phenomenal. It made the program not just a guide to the service, but a keepsake that deepened the overall experience. Customizing the illustration to more closely resemble the actual wedding party makes it that much more personal and enduring.

The Henna wedding program (which pairs nicely with our "Cardamom" modern Indian wedding invitation) is being assembled onto pages as I type, Real Card Studio's new wedding invitation designs will be in select stores nationwide very soon!

Real Card Studio Welcomes Jen!

I am delighted to welcome the talented and lovely Jenifer Barber to Real Card Studio. Not completely new on the scene, Jen has worked with us in the past when we needed extra help, and I am excited to be have her around on a more regular basis.

For now, Jen is working in assembly and shipping, and she's exhibited a keen eye for quality control and does very nice hand work. We haven't had an opportunity for her to challenge Gary's bow-tying skills, but I have faith, she won't disappoint.

When not meticulously assembling invitations for Real Card Studio, Jen, and her husband Nick, are raising two very handsome young boys. Crafty at home, she is also an avid knitter. The blanket she made for my first son has now been handed down to my second, and the booties she knitted were just the sweetest.

Say "hello" to Jen and welcome her to the family!

Remembering Doug: A Memorial Program

My grandparents, Melmae and Doug Vicary.

One year ago, my grandfather passed away. It was no surprise, and even a bit of a relief that he was no longer suffering, but it’s always tough to say goodbye. Amidst the grieving, the not-small production of putting on a memorial service falls to the family. Cathartic, I suppose, to have a task and to do the work of remembering. The whole family pitched in and my job, naturally, was to design the memorial programs.

I quickly set to work to put together a pleasing and important account of my grandfather’s life. He had been a residential architect in Seattle for his entire career, building countless homes and apartment buildings in the area. (With his red hair, I always think of my grandfather when reading Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead.)

Desiring some visual interest for inside of the program cover, I pulled inspiration from a cinder block pattern from one of his designs that I thought was interesting and indicative of his career in the 1960s, and used it on the inside cover of the booklet.

I compiled photos from the family, as well as biographical information and personal anecdotes.

In my mind, I kept going back to something my grandparents always said when surrounded by their family: “Look what we started.” Referring of course to the family they created together. Including my grandfather’s most cherished legacy became my focus, and I felt that a family tree was just the thing to do that.

As I started putting the family tree together, I decided that the memorial programs would be a keepsake for my family, so I wanted to add details that my family would enjoy and reference beyond that day. So the historian in me set to work collecting every birthday and wedding date to include as well.

After the memorial service, my grandmother returned home, alone. She and my grandfather both suffered from dementia, so it wasn’t long before she forgot all about the day's event. She just knew she felt sad, and wondered where her husband was.

Later that evening, she called my mother, Miriam, as she usually does. She said, “Oh, Miriam! I just found the most wonderful book. I don’t know where it came from, but it’s all about your dad, it has everything about our life in it. It is just wonderful.”

Grey and Lavender is not such a new combination, but it's one that I've seen gaining popularity for events this year. Wedding Invitation Etiquette: Notifying Guests When Details Have Changed

You've ordered your dream wedding invitations: letterpress printing in your wedding colors on beautiful earth-friendly cotton paper and envelopes meticulously hand addressed by a professional calligrapher. You've had them weighed, carefully-matched-vintage postage-stamped and hand-canceled at the post office. Your guests received them and have all responded with exceeding joy that they'll be celebrating with you on your big day.

And now, you have to change your wedding date.

I recently read this post, by the Modern Latina Bride blogger, regarding a change of date for her up-coming wedding. She was so happy with her invitations, and then distraught when she had to change the wedding date and felt like her invitation efforts were a waste. I have to disagree. Although it feels quite disastrous when you have to make a change, your guests are not feeling a fraction-- if any-- of the distress you are over the trouble of changing it. Unless the date change effects their ability to attend, it's much less troublesome for them than it is for you.

How do you best notify guests of a major change to your event after mailing the invitations? While e-mail and wedding website updates are tempting, I think these should augment your efforts to inform guests of the change, but the official change notification needs to come in the manner in which they were originally invited: by mail.

The update mailing should not be a duplicate of the invitation with just the changes; guests may not notice the difference and assume you just mailed it twice and not get the message that things have changed. The notification should, however, look like it could have been part of the original invitation package. You've gone to the considerable cost and effort to brand your event, and your guests will recognize the update as part of the original message if it looks the same. Ideally, print the new information as if it were, say, a reception card mailing with the invitation: using the same paper and ink colors, design elements and typestyle. If you don't want to splurge for letterpress printing a second time, as long as it still matches, a less expensive print method is acceptable.

If guests have already replied, they might not want to reply a second time, or rather, they may not think they need to. Expect you may need to follow up with anyone that hasn't replied, or hasn't replied a second time to ensure everyone will show up when and where they should.

I started designing this Indian wedding card in my head about two years ago, and finally put it to paper this last year when I settled on the gold, purple and yellow color combination. From there I began reading Indian wedding blogs, such as The New Indian Bride, Maharani Weddings, and absolutely fell in love with South Asian Bride magazine, for inspiration for this glamorous yet modern Indian wedding invitation.

Destination Wedding Save the Date - Sneak Peek!

Another preview of an up-and-coming sample for the Real Card Studio wedding collection. "Mojito" will be part of a suite of wedding stationery designed for a beach destination wedding in mind (although it will work just as well for land-locked formal occasions as well).

The "Sugarcane" collection features the amazing hand lettering by our house calligrapher, Karen Chan. Swoopy and romantic, we'll feature a monogram, single names (both pictured above) and full formal names on the invitation.

Although the colors of the invitation will be luxurious white cotton with aqua and cerulean blue, the save the date will be robin's egg, or Tiffany, blue paper with similar hand lettering, but the grey ink and grosgrain ribbon will not give away the invitation. (It's nice to be happily surprised by what comes next, I think.) I also like that it shows a variety of solutions to the destination wedding invitation, and lets people know that every piece does not have to be identical from save the date to the programs and menus. A common theme-- absolutely. But they don't have to be identical. There are so many beautiful pieces to this coming suite, it would be hard to choose just one!

One of my favorite details of Real Card Studio 's Cosmopolitan wedding invitation is the way the pop of color from the reply envelope makes the interior pocket display interesting and personal. My favorite all-time favorite color combination, and the hot color trend for wedding invitations this season, is gray and yellow. The clean, modern typestyle of this wedding invitation is very appealing too.

Multi-cultural Invitations for a Chinese-American Wedding

Year of the Dragon wedding invitations by Real Card Studio. This is one of my favorite wedding invitations of all time-- it's not often that we get to do anything with dragons in the wedding invitation design field.

When we did this multi-cultural wedding invitation for a Chinese-American couple in Houston, Texas, the client supplied artwork that was the quality of a temporary tattoo from a gumball machine at the bowling alley, so we recreated the dragon and just look at how stunning it looks foil printed in black gloss pigment!

Another feature that really pulls this invitation together is the hand lettering on the names. Exquisite work by LeeAnn Clark. Everything she has ever done for us has been spectacular. (See here and here for more of her work.)

A traditional Chinese red envelope hand addressed in gold calligraphy finishes it perfectly. This is an elegant Asian wedding card, with a nod toward tradition, and truly exquisite printing and craftsmanship. Destined to remain one of Real Card Studio's all-time favorite invitations.

Monogram of the Royal Wedding Invitation

The much anticipated wedding invitation of Prince William and Kate Middleton was released for the public to see recently. As expected, an impressive 6x10" heavy white card with gilded edges, engraved printing and invitees names hand calligraphed on the invitation. The invitation shown here for the public to see is to one of at least three wedding celebration events. The other two are by more-private invitation, and will not be released, at least until after the event.

With the popularity of wedding monograms, using initials of the bride and groom, I found the royal wedding invitation intriguing. As I discussed over the weekend with my Twitter friends Chandra Greer and Nina Jones, unlike all the monograms Real Card Studio creates for wedding invitations currently, this invitation bears the insignia, or monogram, of the host and not the couple. And furthermore, for reasons I think we can all understand, rather than the bride's family issuing the invitation, which is most traditional, closely followed by the popularity of the couple hosting their own event and thus issuing the invitations, attendance in this unusual circumstance is requested by the groom's family.

Does this mean custom monograms using the couple's initials are incorrect? I don't think it does. Let's face it, not many of us come from royalty nor have a family crest to display. And in lieu of a fantastically famous or important wedding host (or hostess), it seems more appropriate to celebrate and feature the couple regardless of by whom the wedding is hosted.

Creating a new monogram, as a couple, is exciting. On the invitation, before the wedding, the monogram should either bear just the first initial of each person, just the last initial, or sometimes a first and last for both. What it should never be is the bride's first initial, groom's first initial and the groom's last name initial-- that monogram would indicate that the couple is already married and she has taken his last name. Such a monogram can only be used after the wedding, decorating the reception menu or on personal stationery to be used for wedding thank you notes, but not for the invitation or ceremony materials.

Pastel Colors for Summer Bat Mitzvah

The slanted and oversized script is a pretty way to emphasize the title of invitation card, paired with bat mitzvah invitation wording in all-caps type for overall balance. The circle and square Party and Reply cards add interest to this invitation suite.
