Death Penalty (Capital punishment) has in the past been practiced in virtually every society. Today, most countries are considered by Amnesty International as abolitionists (currently only 58 nations actively practice it, with 139 countries abolishing it), which allowed a vote on a nonbinding resolution to the UN to promote the abolition of the death penalty. However, over 60% of the world's population live in countries where executions take place insofar as the four most populous countries in the world (the People's Republic of China, India, United States and Indonesia) apply the death penalty and are unlikely to abolish it in the near future.

In my personal opinion, when a criminal commits a horrible, intolerable, destructive offense, give that person the option of life imprisonment (which can be cruel as well) without the possibility of parole plus restitution or death. Whether you have watched it at stadiums or on TV, the most annoying and controversial thing in this year's South Africa "World Cup" Football is, undoubtedly Vuvuzela (Yes! that endless, high-pitched drone), the air horn which can emit sound at 100 odd dB - contributing to football matches with precariously high sound pressure levels for unprotected ears.

Vuvuzelas have been criticized for noise-induced hearing loss, potentially spreading colds/flu viruses on a greater scale than coughing/shouting and finally drowning the sound & atmosphere of football games. Commentators have described the sound as "annoying" and "satanic" and compared it with a stampede of noisy elephants/a deafening swarm of locusts/a goat on the way to slaughter/a giant hive full of very angry bees.

The outer occurrences that trigger these reactions in me simply MIRROR my own nature. If I didn't have faiths around the problems that bother me, where would my responses come from? If I didn't have some reference within, I wouldn't respond at all.

When outer occurrences spark a response, we need to look within to explore what’s going on.

Was Hell Extinct? -Proof! (Classic Joke)

I want to share with you a classic joke that circled around e-mails for quite some time.

Was Hell Extinct? Yes! Here's a scientific proof!

The following is an actual question given on a University of Arizona chemistry mid-term, and an actual answer turned in by a student.

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving, which is unlikely. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today.

Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities:

1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, 'It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you,' and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number two must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct..... ....leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting 'Oh my God.'

This student quite rightly received an A+ grade in the process too :-)

First, News: All of you might aware of the chaos evoked by major volcanic events at "Eyjafjallajökull" in Iceland which caused significant disruption to air travel across western and northern Europe in Mid-April, 2010 (15 April 2010 - 20 April 2010 to be exact!) causing cancellation of most flights within, to, and from Europe.

Apart from the concerns of the catastrophic volcanic events, most people are puzzled by the name "Eyjafjallajökull" itself which is Icelandic for "Island-Mountain-Glacier". To make it easier to remember, "Eyja" means island, "Fjalla" is mountain, "Jokull" means glacier, and so altogether is Island Mountain Glacier.

So here is the million dollar question: How the Icelanders/Geologists might come up with / coin / discover the mouthful to pronounce the name "Eyjafjallajökull"?

Even when highly paid TV & radio news reporters, found themselves baffling Eyjafjallajokull, the mountain’s 16-letter (even some one shortened it as E-15), six-and-a-half-syllable, 47-Scrabble-point name, I am sure you can do better than them. Here is an educational video to all the news reporters in the world that are trying to report from the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland ;).
