Sunday, traditionally, has always been slighty more productive than my Saturdays - which usually follow a night of heavy drinking and involve me actively avoiding checking my account balance. Was at the Village, but didn't really get into it all that much due to the fact that I was constrained by female factors *rolls eyes*

Skipping right along, it's 12:45pm, and I'm steeling myself for an hour or MORE (!?!) in the gym - and hopefully I'll go see a movie or something later on.

A friend of mine has been to Hungary, and has come away with nothing but praise for the country. One thing she did want to draw attention to, apart from the cheap beer and thermal 'bats' (it's 'baths', I just got confused with her accent), was the existence of a rather curious little native liqueur, called 'Unicum'.

Described as having an earthy and bitter taste, Unicum was first presented to the ancestor of the founder of a large Hungarian brewing company, who upon tasting it exclaimed 'Das ist ein Unikum!' which translates from German as 'That is a specialty!'

You've heard of the 'Food for Oil' program, but here's something a little different. The Democratic of Congo has started the 'Guns for Bikes' initiative, which provides a $50 bicycle in exchange for handing in firearms - and it has proven to be very successful, even more so than the U.N's disarmament exercise they implemented after the countries 5 year war. This is a member of one of El Salvador's 'Maras', which had their origins as street gangs in L.A, where thousands of illegal immigrants made their homes. In the 1990's however, Bill Clinton began a campaign of deportation, sending them back to Central America, taking their own L.A gang style and fusing it with the easy availablily of guns and a hotbed of civil strife.

Members are encouraged to liberally tattoo themselves with their gang numbers, the above pictures shows a member of eighteen, one of the largest street gangs in El Salvador.

Speaking of spongy things - a woman from Newcastle-On-Tyne has woken up from a stroke with a completely different accent which affected her brain.. She is now speaking with elements of East European, Jamaican and French Candadian accents, and it has come as quite a surprise to her family and friends - the syndrome, which is very rare, is called Foreign Accent Syndrome - and is known to affect people who have experienced minor injury to their brain. That might explain why my own accent is so fucked up - all those nights on the piss.

Just listened to the Raconteurs album thismorning - it didn't blow my skirt up! I tried really hard to like it - but for the end result of a supposed 'supergroup', I was left pretty blasé about the whole thing.

In more important news, some hassel with the Hoff over the weekend! An accident with a chandelier in the gym of a London hotel left David with a severed tendon and a few stitches - the Hoff is currently in the middle of shooting commercials for a British internet company. Link

Watched 'Kakushi-ken: oni no tsume' or 'The Hidden Blade (english translation)' last night - a Japanese movie about a traditional samurai faced with living in a modernising world, and also the old themes of love and duty. I liked it! The acting was great and there was some brilliant Japanese scenery and locations going on! Link

There's many an arduous job to be had, but none more exotic than the Ethiopian salt trader. Journeying to the Danakil Depression with camels in tow, traders lift slabs of salt out of the depression and load up their camels with 20kg blocks at at time. The two guides (above) stand dangerously close to a pool of sulfuric acid, a by-product of the strange concentrations of iron, sulfur and salt in the area.

Thats the name of a huge sign I saw in the middle of nowhere - infront of a burnt out car and an empty bottle of white spirit on the ground, and not a soul for miles around.

How did I come across such a sight?

I got lost last night while running - I'd intended to only go out for an hour and come back with enough time to watch the last half of 'Chasing Amy' and then go to bed. Didn't work out that way though! After a few horrendous navigational mistakes, I ended up on a stony beach miles away from anywhere recognisable - and got home 3 hours later.

Well, it's possible there would of been a house about 5 minutes away, but where's the adventure in thinking that!

I still watched the end of my movie though. NOTHING will stop me from ... watching movies.

Apparently there's a new pub game you play by placing a hand on the ceiling and letting someone hit you in the ribs. The objective: to not look like a pussy. Keep your hand up after the dig, and you've won a little respect. Good luck trying to find a pub with extremely low ceilings though, or alternatively, play the game on stilts.
