Evaluating Your Opportunities

There are a lot of business opportunities out there. In fact, they are a dime a dozen on the internet. So how do you know which ones are worthwhile and which ones are a waste of time? How about past ventures? Should you go back to something that you've tried before? The answers are not always as clear cut as we would like them to be.

Evaluating new opportunities can be hard, especially if it's your first foray into direct marketing / network marketing / affiliate marketing. There are a few boxes that you can check off to see if the company seems legit or not.

A. Is there an actual product or service that you can sell to customers? If the answer is yes, then that's a good sign.

B. Can you sign up as an affiliate and not be a customer? If the answer is yes, then add another check mark in the win column.

C. In the compensation plan, do you get paid to recruit new members or to sell the product or service to others? If you get paid to simply recruit new members and not sell them the product or service, this would be a red flag.

But what if you've been in the industry a while and have had some success in past opportunities and wonder if you should go back? Or maybe you're wondering if you should continue on course with your current business? Here are some things to consider moving forward from where you are today.

1. Have you put in at least six good months of solid effort? Only you can be the real judge of that. But don't kid yourself. It's time to be honest with yourself. If you say no, then it's time to buck up and "git 'er done." If you have put in at least six months of solid effort, then continue to evaulation point number two.

2. Are you making money? No, I don't mean making a commission check. I mean making a profit. Does your monthly commission check meet or exceed the amount of your monthly commitment to the product or service - the cost of the "autoship," if you have physical products. If not, then I would suggest re-evaluating your business plan. If you are six months in with solid effort and can't cover your costs, it might be time to move on.

3. If you're evaluating whether or not to go back to a business opportunity that you've had some success with in the past, review points 1 and 2 above. After that, ask yourself this question: "Can I put myself behind this company, 100%, without reservation?" If the answer is no, then don't do it. You have to believe in the opportunity if you want it to work. 100%, all-in. Why? Because if you have doubts, your prospects, customers, and downline will know.

Hopefully this blog post has been helpful in your evaluation of business opportunities, both new and old. I've been there myself. I stand at a crossroads of opportunities even now. I'll let you know in a few days where it all shakes out, and where I decide to plant my flag!

Planting Your Flag

Have you ever heard of the term "plant your flag" as it refers to business? This was a new one for me. Just a few weeks ago I was on a training call when someone used the phrase and I learned what it means. Keep reading to find out more.

The image I used above is a famous example of planting a flag - when Apollo 11 landed on the moon and the American astronauts planted the American flag on the surface of the moon. It was a symbolic way of laying claim to that area or just saying "we were here." Either way, it was a statement that would stand the test of time. It was a statement of commitment to future space exploration. And although we were only able to go to the moon six times, the space program has continued to explore, even today, as we seek a new program to go back to the moon and beyond.

So what in the heck does that have to do with business and network marketing in particular? Everything, really. Think of it in terms of commitment. Commitment to your goals and dreams, but even more so committed to building a business with a company. Why the commitment to a company, you ask? Are they really committed to you? Let's break this down.

Let me share something with you that I was told on the job a long time ago. My boss said, "You can be good at 10 things or you can be the best at one thing." He was right. If you try to build multiple businesses at the same time, you can be okay at it, but you won't excel. It's hard enough just building one business. But when you focus on a single opportunity, you can become excellent at that one thing - maybe even the best in your industry. Who knows?

But what if the company isn't committed to its representatives, you ask? Then it's probably not the right company to get involved with. If the company changes their comp plan like underwear, then it's probably not so good. Take a look at the comp plan. How much is the company giving back to its representatives? Is the majority of the proceeds from sales going to the company or the distributor? Find the company that feeds the distributor more than it feeds itself. When you find the right one, you'll know. Distributors will be able to make money without sponsoring anyone, and if they do build a network the compensation plan will reward them handsomely.

Nexus Rewards Review: My First Month

If you read my blog or follow me on social media, you've probably seen that I'm working with Nexus Rewards. It's a savings and rewards club that can help you save money on gas, groceries, pretty much anything you buy. Well, I just finished up my first month and I thought I would give my opinion on this opportunity.

First off, let me say that Nexus Rewards is a network marketing company through and through. The founders of the company, Art and Rob Phelps, have been involved with network marketing for many years. They've had great success and have trained others who have had the same. Bottom line with these two is that they know the network marketing industry from top to bottom.

So, how does the program work? Well, there are apps that the company has teamed up with in the backend that give you savings, cash back, and rewards from what seems like hundreds of gas stations, stores, and restaurants. It's pretty impressive. I'll share my results below.

The compensation plan is a critical piece in any network marketing company, right? Well, let me tell you, Nexus Rewards has put every penny they can back into the comp plan. There are bonuses. There are overrides. Needless to say with network marketing, the opportunity is huge and there is the potential for big residual income.

How did I do my first month? Ok, first, I've earned $84 in cash back from a few purchases of items that were already on my "to get" list. Second, I'm halfway to a $10 gift card to just about whatever I want. I saved 33 cents per gallon on my last fillup of 10 gallons, for a total savings of $3.30. Last but not least, I saved $150 on a 9-day rental car from Hertz! So, in total for my first month, I have saved/earned a whopping $242 and some change. Considering I only sponsored 1 free member (more on that in another blog post) for the month, that was all earnings just on my own - things that I would have purchased anyway.

So what is my final review of Nexus Rewards conclusion? Nexus Rewards is poised for growth with apps that can put some serious cash back into the hands of consumers. This is a product that people want and need, especially now. I know it gets said a lot in this industry, but this one really is a no-brainer!

What is Network Marketing?

Many will say that network marketing is a scam, a pyramid scheme, or anything but a legitimate business - without actually knowing much, if anything at all, about the business model. Read on to find out where network marketing started, where it has been, and where it's going.

Network marketing, otherwise known as multilevel marketing, is a method of marketing that rewards not only the sales of products and/or services but provides the opportunity for anyone to build their own salesforce and make override commissions on the sales of their organization. This model can be found in many industries today, including insurance sales, real estate, services sales sectors such as satellite and cable TV, etc. Ever get a referral reward for sending friends or family to sign up for a product or service that you take part in? Then you've been part of the network marketing industry.

So where did this unique form of sales and rewards begin? Who came up with the idea of rewarding salesmen that would go on to build their own sales organization? By many accounts, it all started with a simple vitamin company called Nutrilite way back in 1934, founded by Carl Rehnborg. One day a customer suggested to Rehnborg that he would train his salespeople in exchange for a percentage of the profit. This was the beginning of the network marketing concept.

Of course, the most famous network marketing company has to be Amway. Founded in 1959 by Jay Van Andel and Rich DeVoss. The two had been Nutrilite distributors for almost a decade at that point. Today, Nutrilite is a subsidiary company of Amway, with its product line being distributed by Amway's global network of many millions of distributors.

So what's the deal with network marketing being called a "pyramid scheme" or a "Ponzi scheme?" Well, it all has to do with products, services, investment returns, and the flow of money. While Ponzi schemes are probably best left to another post for more details, let's just take a quick look at the FTC vs Amway ruling of 1979. There were many who felt like Amway was a pyramid scheme because of price fixing, misrepresenting the average income of distributors, product front loading, etc. However, after four years of litigation, the ruling was in favor of Amway as a legitimate business model. There was indeed an opportunity for anyone who wanted to join the company's distributor force to build their own sales organization selling the company's products and make money from doing so.

Two major things to come out of the ruling that still defines a legitimate network marketing / multilevel marketing / direct sales company today are 1) there must be a product that can be sold to an end user - the consumer, and 2) the main income for a distributor should be the distribution of a product or service, not simply the recruitment of other distributors or salesmen. The distinction here is that it's ok to have product sales commission overrides, but it's not okay to profit from simply signing up new recruits over and over again, building an organization that never sells any products.

In a pyramid scheme, the main money comes from new people buying a distributorship. This money is then distributed upline from the new recruit, making those above them more money. There is a fabricated or even no real product - perhaps just an "investment" into a project that doesn't even exist. Once the recruitment of new participants slows down, the money stops flowing and the pyramid collapses in on itself. This is the basics of a Ponzi scheme. In recent times, Bernie Madoff was convicted of operating the largest investment Ponzi schemes of all time. He was subsequently sentenced to 150 years in federal prison and was forced to pay $17 billion in restitution.

In 1994 - 1995, at the beginning of the internet's proliferation into the homes of people everywhere, network marketing evolved into a new medium of recruitment and sales, online. Online sales and marketing would take off over the next few years with the beginnings of today's behemoths such as Amazon.com and Microsoft. Network marketing took hold in the early days of the internet as well, with the creation of a slightly different alternative method, called affiliate marketing. This meant that you could sell a product, like a book from Amazon, and make a commission off of that sale from the retailer. You would be their affiliate. In some cases, this affiliate would be paid if they referred other affiliates, but this would only go down to 1 or 2 levels of referrals, unlike network marketing, where distributors could get paid down many levels of referrals within their sales organizations.

One such company to take advantage of the internet and its advances was SFI, today known as Strong Future International (formerly known as Six Figure Income). With the original product being a magazine that featured interviews and stories from some of the biggest names in network marketing, the company quickly built an organization for distributors online. Founded by Gery Carson, a former Herbalife distributor, the company has become one of the largest affiliate marketing businesses online. In reality, it's more of a hybrid between affiliate marketing and network marketing (or multilevel marketing). Hundreds of new affiliates sign up to the company every day. The business now falls as the exclusive marketing are for the Zing Network of sites and services and has a presence around the globe.

So where is network marketing headed? Today, marketers from around the world flock to where the internet traffic is in order to share their wares and opportunities - social networks. Social networking has become the premiere method of sales and recruiting for network marketers the world over. Who really knows where the next "big" push for network marketing will take place? It will be wherever people are who strive to better themselves, to make more out of their lives, who want an opportunity to own their own business and help others to do the same.

Where will you be in 5 years?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Before you answer, take a look at where you were 5 years ago. Have you come a long way since then? Have you achieved your goals to be where you are now? If you answered yes, then congratulations to you! You are among the few who have done so!

If you answered no, then read on.

Most people fail to achieve their 5 year goals because they fail to plan. That's if they even have 5 year goals written down somewhere. A goal without a date attached to it is just a dream - a pipe dream if you will. The likelihood of achieving your dream without a solid plan is virtually nil. So what can we do differently over the course of the next 5 years in order to make a significant change in some area of our life (note that this could be financial, physical, etc.)?

1. Write it down. As I stated above, a goal that isn't written down is simply a dream. "One day I will ..." or "Someday we're going to ..." - those are dreams and wishes. Seldom do they come true. But if we write down our goal, then we can make a solid plan of how to achieve that goal. Then it becomes real. It's no longer just a dream.

2. Set a date. Life coaches will tell you that you need to set a date to your goals. They'll also tell you that you should have short, medium, and long-term goals. But for today's exercise, I want you to focus on a long-term 5 year goal (yes, that's long term for the focus of today's blog post!). So take a look back and number one and ask yourself if that is where you want to be in 5 years, if it's not, then revise that goal. Set a time limit for where you want to be in five years, Write down an exact date. That date could be your birthday, the first of the year, or 5 years from today's date - whatever works for you to remember and write down.

3. Make a plan. Failure to plan is the number one cause of people missing their goals. You can have a goal and set the date, but if you have no plan on how to achieve that goal, then you'll just flounder aimlessly trying to find a needle in a haystack. You could still get lucky, but probably not likely. So how do you make this plan? Simple. Reverse engineer the goal. What do I mean by that?

I mean take it apart and review how it happens, piece by piece. Success leaves clues. Examine those who have achieved what you want to achieve in the past. See how they did it. What did they do? How can you break down your goal into bite-sized pieces? For example, if you want to make $1 million in sales, you could sell four $250,000 items, or you could sell 100,000 $10 items. Which one would be easier or take more steps to achieve? Then break it down again from there. How do you get the $250K sale, or the $10 sale? Once you've detailed that plan, then rinse and repeat.

Goal setting is essential to turning your dreams into reality. If you want to know where you will be in 5 years, don't look back at the last 5 years anymore. Look forward, make a goal, set a date, and plan ahead.

Back In The Saddle Again

Wow ... it's been a hot minute since I've posted on this blog! It's not the longest break I've ever taken, but it sure has been a long time. So, what has everyone been up to? I hope you're still working on making money from home and becoming the stay-at-home person if that's what you want to do.

As for me, I'm still working on websites, doing SEO primarily as well as regular WordPress maintenance for some clients. Don't get me wrong. That doesn't mean that I've given up on my dream of residual income. I'm still working toward my goal of early retirement!

I've continued to put money into my Bitcoin investment, even with the latest downturn. Remember, buy low sell high! Consider this a Bitcoin sales event!

So, what about building that residual income? How am I working on that these days? What program(s) am I promoting? Well, let's just say I'm doing a test run on a new one this month that has a lot of promise. I've already made a profit and I haven't recruited any paid members yet!

HOW I LEARNED ABOUT RESIDUAL INCOME

It's talked about all the time - residual income. But what is it? What does that phrase mean?

I was first exposed to residual income way back in 1996, right after I got out of the Army. I was working with a local satellite TV installer, a Mom and Pop shop. One day the owner and I started talking about business.

He showed me a print out from Primestar (his primary vendor at the time), showing all of his current subscribers, people who had signed up for the satellite TV service under his business code.

Now, the business got a decent one-off commission off of the sale and installation of the service, but that wasn't his focus. He was building a customer base. And for every current subscriber that kept paying their bill each month, he got a smaller monthly commission.

This was my first exposure to residual income - money that continues to come in, month after month, long after the sale is made. Of course, it's not automatic. The key is to keep the customers happy so they continue with the product or service.

Now that you see my example, you can probably think of a lot of industries that use residual income: all types of insurance, cable TV, satellite TV, home security systems, affiliate marketing, network marketing, etc.

Can you see the allure of building up a customer base of hundreds or even thousands of customers, each providing a small commission each month? Residual income is how fortunes are made. It's passive and can be massive.

Now consider whatever market you are in right now. It could be internet marketing, direct sales, cryptocurrencies, etc. It doesn't matter. Ask yourself this - who is making more money, the salesmen peddling the lotions, potions, pills, and thrills, or the people producing the tools needed by those salesmen (i.e., the sales funnel systems, traffic systems, lead generation systems, etc.)

The question you have to ask yourself is where will you get the better return on your investment, on a monthly autoship with a gold rush company or a monthly investment in a toolbox you can provide for those looking for gold.

The Discipline of Working From Home

Many people ask what is the most difficult part of working from home. That's easy. It's the schedule or lack thereof. It's the discipline needed to get up in the morning and "get to work." Without direct supervision, many of us that come from an employee background find ourselves struggling to prioritize our time and eventually the struggle extends to even getting started each day.

While we know what we should be doing, getting to it can be a daunting challenge after a few weeks of working at home. Here are some tips that can help with building the discipline needed to successfully navigate this most difficult part of working from home.

Set a schedule of when you are going to be working. Yes, I know your time is flexible and that's one of the advantages of working from home. But we don't want to flex it so much that it breaks. Figure out what time of the day is going to work best for you and set that time aside as your working time, even if it's just a few hours in the afternoon, etc.
Get dressed for success. It's easy to lounge around in your PJs all day, right? I mean, if you're not going out to meet anyone, what's the point of putting on clothes. Even if you have a zoom, you can do business up top and party on the bottom, right? Well, perhaps. But in most cases researchers have found that when we get dressed up, we take our day more seriously. It's hard to even take yourself seriously if you are pajama guy all day. So, get dressed, at least for your work schedule you put together in number one.
Create a task list to you don't forget what needs to be done in a timely manner. It's easy to start letting tasks fall through the cracks when you're working from home. Keeping a running task list (use Google calendar, etc.) will help you stay organized and get job tasks done on time for your clients or business.
Take care of yourself. Now you would think this one should go without saying, but it does require saying. After a couple of weeks or months of working from home, a strange thing will happen if you're not careful. You'll stop taking care of yourself. Personal hygiene may decline. Getting out of bed will seem like a chore. Brushing your teeth, combing your hair, shaving - all things that will begin to wane if you're not careful. It's very important that along with your schedule and getting dressed for "work," that you prepare each day and stay on top of your personal hygiene. You think I'm kidding. Ask anyone who has worked from home for any length of time.
Last but not least, I think it's important to stay healthy. Maintain some type of exercise regimen. Without your daily commute to a work place or walking around at work, you will be more sendentary that before. You need to take up walking, hiking, running, etc., if you haven't before. Something to burn off calories and keep you in shape. Set a goal to do whatever it is you choose at least three times a week to start with. This will help with your physical and mental health and help you stay on a disciplined schedule for you work at home experience.

I hope these tips help you overcome the biggest issue in working from home and be a successful work at home freelancer or business owner.

As you've probably noticed during the stay at home order during this pandemic, there are some jobs that you can work from home. Others are deemed "essential," and they go on working their normal schedule with a change in procedures to include social distancing and enhanced cleaning, etc.

But the big question bugging people who aren't working right now is what can they do to work from home. Let's take a look at some work at home jobs and what YOU can do to be able to earn an income from your living room or home office.
Where to begin? Okay, so first up is what I started with - writing content for the internet. As a beginner, it doesn't pay much. I remember starting out in 2007 making three cents per word. Yeah, that's peanuts compared to what you can make with a little experience. You can find several legitimate content writing opportunities by just Googling "freelance content writer" and go from there.

The next best thing you can do is to learn about affiliate marketing and sell someone else's product or service online. With this method of online earning, you have no overhead (except for your office setup, internet access, etc. at home), no inventory to keep, and all you have to do is advertise. Using a referral link or personalized, branded, domain name, you can promote a product or service wherever you go online. Include the link in your email signature. Text it to your friends. I've decided to get back into the trading game with cryptocurrencies. Find out why I've decided to do this and what my plans are for trading long-term.

I've moved my assets to Coinbase Pro simply because of the volume and it is operating legally within the US regulations on US soil. So there is that.

While I'm still HODLing and getting some increase in value thanks to the recent rise in BTC prices, I'm not content to just "ride the wave" and see what happens. I'm going to get back to trading using the simple strategies I learned over the last few years. The object of trading is, of course, to increase my BTC holdings, plain and simple.

I've got the goal of putting more money into play as well, to edge me closer to my goal of having 1 BTC to put away into either a paper wallet or a hardware wallet. We'll see what I decide to do once I get there. It would be optimal to get there before the next all-time high is reached, but we will see.

The future is bright for cryptocurrencies and especially Bitcoin as a store of value. The current pandemic and ensuing economic crisis has proven that BTC can hold its own against gold as a store of value and definitely against fiat currencies like the US dollar.
