ITExpo Podcast - Conversation with Todd Landry from Sphere Communications

Todd Landry with Sphere Communications and I have spoken a number of times over the past year or so. Todd isn't just one of the most insightful business leaders I know. He's someone I consider a friend too. Any time I get the chance to talk with Todd, the conversation moves into interesting places, but last week at the ITExpo, I got one of those rare opportunities to sit face to face in the press room. Because we were in the press room, there's obvious background noise at times, and other people. I think that's one of the things I like most about a conference chat like this. You'll get to hear Todd and I in a live setting, sharing an impromptu conversation. Thanks to my business partner and very best friend Sheryl Breuker for taking pictures of our conversation. She got pictures I would never have been able to take during conversation, and some of the pictures she captured of Todd are just fantastic. I try to include small size pictures here, but these are so good I'm including a few in the larger size.

ITExpo Podcast - Conversation with Serge Forest from Paraxip

On Monday, September 10, 2007 I had the opportunity to meet with Serge Forest from Paraxip Technologies. Serge is the President and CEO of Paraxip and just a genuinely fascinating guy to talk with. Paraxip's NetBorder solution is something I haven't seen anyone else doing. They're taking session border controller functionality and, rather than selling a hardware unit, virtualizing it in software. This approach obviously delivers some different scalability metrics than a hardware approach, but it opens up a new market segment I think is huge. Virtualizing in software means small and medium businesses, who don't have the resoruces or finances for a lot of dedicated hardware, can bundle applications and services into server technology. It means niche VoIP service providers can virtualize multiple SBCs, for multiple customers, in a single unit. I think Paraxip's solution is going to postiviely rock some segments of the market. Realtime Unified Communications Community Conversation with Dan Beiler at IDC and Mark Straton at Siemens Communications

In a recent survey conducted by IDC that show that almost 80 percent of U.S. firms surveyed lack open communications capabilities needed for greater productivity and competitiveness with lower IT and communications costs. These findings are intriguing in light of the fact that 62 percent of respondents (CIOs and IT Directors) predict a marked increase in the number of mobile and distributed workers that will require open communications capability in order maintain or increase productivity. Mark Winther from IDC indicates that "what's needed is an open communications environment that combines unified communications with IT platforms and business process integration along with other streamlining capabilities." It's no secret that I'm a Siemens fan. The Siemens Open Communications strategy addresses this demand by enabling knowledge workers to collaborate much more quickly and effectively, find information and experts rapidly, and get much more done in shorter amounts of time, virtually any place, any time and across whatever device best suits their preference or situation. Its Open Communications portfolio is standards-based to enable integration and interoperability within any IT and communications infrastructure. It's take a couple of weeks of coordination, but this morning I had the opportunity to chat on the phone with Dan Bieler from IDC and Mark Straton from Siemens Communications. This discussion really circles around what I believe with be the single hottest success factor for companies in the unified communications space for the next year. Integration of services with applications through the adoption and support of open standards is going to be vital to the industry. Mark was gracious enough to share a Powerpoint file that pretty clearly demonstrates the evolution and just how vital this shift is. Here's a timeline that really provides some perspective looking at some notable names in the Internet market. What's clear is that the evolution and emergence of new technologies is increasing at a fast pace. Change isn't simply here, it's coming faster every day. Here's another way to look at the evolution of technologies - POTS is a legacy technology. It isn't on the rise. There's nothing new there. Converged VoIP began really emerging in 1999, but 2001 was a banner year. That's when VoIP really got hot. But in the past year, unified communications, open communications and complete collaboration and sharing have become key business drivers. In short, VoIP isn't enough to hold a competitive edge any longer. Businesses need to compete at higher levels and they have to have the enhanced productivity that can only be found by leveraging every possible tool. Realtime Unified Communications Community Conversation on Software Oriented Architecture with Todd Landry and Krithi Rao

I've spoken with Todd Landry at Sphere Communications several times. Todd and I first met at the Internet Telephony Expo in San Diego last year and I've been watching Sphere more closely ever since. Recently Frost & Sullivan, one of the most widely respected industry analyst firms, awarded their Product Differentiation Innovation Award to Sphere Communications for incorporating Software Oriented Architecture (SOA) into their product line. Krithi Rao, one of Frost & Sullivan's analysts said that "Sphere's architecture differentiation may become the company's strongest competitive advantage."

I've written about SOA a few times and have been following the developments closely. I see SOA as the next step of convergence. Beyond converging voice and data network infrastructure, SOA converges applications and services. It really present the opportunity for voice services and applications to come together and integrate seamlessly. I spoke on a conference call with Krithi and Todd. about SOA and why it's important. Realtime Unified Communications Podcast Chat with David Mandelstam at Sangoma Technologies

I first spoke with David Mandelstam at Sangoma Technologies quite some time ago. He was one of the first interview conversations we had here in the Realtime Community. I've since spent time with David at a couple of industry conferences, sometimes searching for coffee together.

Founded in 1984 as Sangoma Technologies, the company has earned a leadership reputation for its robust data communications products based on the PC platform.

In May 2000, through a reverse takeover, Sangoma Technologies became a publicly traded company on the Toronto Venture Exchange (TSXV:STC).

David's an incredibly nice man and brings some insights to the industry that I find fascinating. He sees things from a large perspective because of the role Sangoma plays in unified communications overall.

I first met Todd Landry, Senior Vice President from Sphere Communications at the ITExpo in San Diego last year. We had a great conversation on the exhibit floor, and I've spoken to him regularly since.

Todd joined Sphere in 2003 to lead product management, marketing and business development. Prior to Sphere, Mr. Landry launched carrier-class IP Telephony SoftSwitch and Media Gateway solutions as Vice President of Product Management at CommWorks Corporation (a subsidiary of 3Com Corporation). At CommWorks, Mr. Landry also established several OEMs and conducted strategic acquisitions. Prior to 3Com, he led the development and launch of the Total Control line of Internet access and wireless CDMA mobile data products as Vice President of Product Management at U.S. Robotics. Mr. Landry holds two U.S. patents related to IP telephony and mobile wireless data systems. Mr. Landry graduated from DeVry Institute of Technology and Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, and has participated in several executive education initiatives including Northwestern University 's Kellogg Graduate School and University of Michigan 's School of Business Administration.

He's always a pleasure to talk with and has soem really keen insights into the direction the industry's headed in. Last year at the ITExpo in San Diego I had the chance to meet and have dinner with Lou Guercia, CEO at WebDialogs. Lou's a great guy with a very solution-oriented view of the world.

The other day I had a chance to connect with Lou on Skype and talk about what's been going on with Unyte. We also explored some thoughts on Microsoft's acquisition of Tellme, Cisco's acquisition of Webex, and what those purchases might signal to the industry.

Realtime Unified Communications Podcast Chat with David Moorhouse at Camrivox

One of the companies that caught my eye going into spring VON is Camrivox. Since I wasn't able to make it to the VON conference, we've been working to coordinate logistics for a telephone chat. Yesterday I was able to speak with David Moorhouse, Camrivox's VP of Marketing.

David has more than 25 years experience in the electronics industry, previously as Product Line Manager for Conexant's "Argon" range of DSL and networking ICs and software for CPE. Prior to Conexant, David worked for Dataquest (Gartner Group) as Director of Market Research for the European communications applications semiconductor market.

Camrivox's PR team also provided me with a couple pictures of the Flexor 500 telephone.

Some time back I spoke with Acme Packet and one of their customers, O1 Networks. That chat was diriven by a press release about some work the two companies were doing together. That podcast is online here. Acme Packet had been in my preipheral vision prior to that podcast, but that brought them more distinctly into my view. They've had a number of news releases, updates and enhancements since then.

Yesterday I spoke on the phone with Kevin Mitchell, Acme's Director of Solutions Marketing and Seamus Hourihan, their Senior VP of Marketing and Product Management.

Rather than share bios from Seamus and Kevin, I'd like to share somethign I found on Acme Packets web site answering the question "why Acme?"

How'd You Get That Name?
Naming a company is one of the toughest decisions for a startup. A great name should be memorable and help tell your "story." And the name should be near the beginning of the alphabet - or at least before Cisco, if you are in the telecom field.
Once you have a name, you still have to design a logo that faithfully represents your company's mission. Unfortunately, you'll get plenty of "helpful" advice about your name and logo from almost everyone, including your mother!
We based our name and logo on our "story:"
"Enabling peak performance for interactive communications across IP network borders, so service providers can increase their revenues and profits by delivering new voice, video, and multimedia applications."
It was blatantly obvious the only choice was:

The intersecting peak and packet represent interconnecting networks, where we enable interactive communications across IP networks.
The star represents the light we shine on your networking and business challenges.
The gold color represents the "gold bits," or valuable premium communications, we help you deliver.
The teal blue color represents the modern professionalism we apply to solving your problems.
The italic font represents the forward-looking, visionary team we have assembled.
The lower case text represents our approachable team that works with you to achieve your business goals of increased revenues and profits.
That's it. Now you know the entire "story" behind our name, logo, and mission.
