What are Surprising Facts About Windermere, FL?

Windermere, Florida, has deep roots in Central Florida, with a quaint downtown and a setting among the lakes that feel almost untouched by time. Established decades before the area’s major growth, the town has maintained its small-town vibe while also collecting its share of odd but true facts.



1. The Infamous Dirt Roads of Windermere


Why does Windermere still have dirt roads downtown? Originally, when the town of Windermere was being built, paving downtown sand streets was not a priority. Funding fell short, so the town's sandy dirt roads became part of its charm. More than 100 years later, the sand roads are still part of Windermere’s identity. Even with the maintenance they require, many residents continue to support keeping them unpaved to preserve the town’s quaint character.



2. Windermere High School Isn't Located in the Town of Windermere


It may surprise people who are not local to the area that Windermere High School is located outside the town limits, in unincorporated Windermere, about 6 miles from downtown. In fact, prior to the current high school opening, residents of Windermere originally attended West Orange High School, which is actually located in Winter Garden. In 2017, the current Windermere High School opened to relieve overcrowding at the West Orange High School. Even today, residents of downtown Windermere are zoned for Olympia High School, located east of Windermere.



3. The Windermere Post Office disappeared for a decade


Between 1891 and 1900, there was no Windermere post office or postmaster, and residents picked up their mail from nearby Gotha. The Windermere Post Office is known to have had at least 9 buildings serve as the town's post office over the years. The current Windermere post office opened in 1993 and sits on the east side of town, off Conroy Windermere Road.



4. Town Hall literally rolled down the road to its current site in 1938​


Originally, the Women's Club Building (known now as the town hall building) was located at Fernwood Park, at Seventh Avenue &amp; Butler Street. Using logs as rollers, the building was pulled by truck to the current location and became known as the Community Club. It would not become Town Hall until 1945, when it was given to the town. The Windermere Town Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 and remains the centerpiece of downtown on Main Street.



5. The police force started as a tiny two‑person team


It wasn't until the late 1960s that the Windermere police force had a second policeman join. In fact, in the early 1960s, there was no office; there was only a radio in the marshal's car. Today, the force has nine patrol officers, the Chief of Police, the Deputy Chief, Patrol Supervisors, and staff members. The current Windermere Police Department building, which opened alongside the Town of Windermere in 2022, is located on Main Street.



6. Luxury Communities in Windermere


Many people ask, Is Isleworth part of the town of Windermere? The Town of Windermere attempted to annex both Isleworth and Butler Bay in 2007. Butler Bay voted 90+ to join the town, while the better-known Isleworth remained part of unincorporated Windermere. The Town of Windermere ended up with prime lakefront real estate, including some of its highest-value lakefront territory, without ever getting the more famous Isleworth name.



7. One of Orange County’s Oldest Towns Is Still One of Its Smallest


Windermere was already established long before the Disney-driven growth of Central Florida, yet today it’s known worldwide as home to celebrities and billionaires. Despite all that recognition, the town itself still has only a few thousand residents, retaining its authentic lake-town laid-back lifestyle while being close to attractions, shopping, and dining.

What is the Citrus Tower 70th Anniversary Event?


The iconic Citrus Tower in Clermont, Florida, is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a community celebration called Orange Crush. This free event will be held on Sunday, June 14th, from 10am - 4pm at the Citrus Tower located at 141 N Hwy 27 in Clermont. The day will be filled with free rides to the top of the tower, local food vendors, live entertainment, kids' activities, and so much more.



A brief History of the Citrus Tower in Clermont, Florida


Before the more recent growth, Clermont was known for its rolling hills, rural living, and, of course, its extensive citrus groves. The Citrus Tower was built during the citrus boom as a draw to boost tourism and still stands as a reminder of the deep roots of citrus in the area, becoming one of the most recognizable icons in the Clermont skyline.




The Citrus Tower started construction in 1955 and opened in July 1956 as an observation attraction.


The tower is 226 feet tall, equating to 22 stories.


The tower contains 5 million pounds of concrete and 149,00 pounds of steel.


Built to withstand winds of more than 190 miles per hour.


Originally an open-air observation deck (now enclosed &amp; air conditioned), it gives visitors panoramic views of surrounding Lake County and beyond, with over 35 miles of visibility on a clear day.

Today, the Citrus Tower is much more than an observation tower. An in-house coffee shop, Citrus Coffee Co, is located on the ground floor of the tower and serves a variety of caffeinated treats. Citrus-flavored goodies include their orange cream latte, snickerdoodle latte, orange hot chocolate, and cranberry orange muffin (just to name a few). Perfect to take to the top and sip while taking in the views. The Citrus Tower is also home to the Florida Messer Cattle Company, offering a variety of quality meats.


In addition, the newly renovated event space is now available for banquets, weddings, conferences, and more. With more than 6,000 square feet, the hall can seat up to 250 people for a conference (theater-style) and 120 guests at tables. And yes, rentals include access to the observation deck.

Seoul Bol - located in Windermere Village at the corner of 535 next to Windermere High School, this Korean bibimbap spot recently opened and serves customizable bowls with Korean flavors.

Cosa Nostra Italian Deli is planning a downtown Winter Garden location in addition to their downtown Clermont location. Stoneybrook Exchange (New Plaza at Windermere Road &amp; Stoneybrook W Parkway)

Diadem Pickleball Complex (expected in 2027), a 25,000 square foot facility located at 14748 W. Colonial Drive


The expansion of Tucker Ranch Recreation &amp; Nature Complex includes a wellness campus with over 20 acres focused on health and wellness initiatives in Winter Garden.




Horizon West Updates




Dutch Bros Coffee in Hamlin (construction in progress and signage has gone up in Spring 2026), known for its drive-thru coffee experience with flavored iced coffee, hot coffee, cold brews and newly released food items.


Swig in Hamlin (expected opening in Summer 2026), expanding rapidly in Florida is a Utah-born brand that features the infamous &quot;dirty sodas&quot; with unique flavor combinations.


Kingdom Sushi slated to open this year at The Mark Plaza at Seidel Road &amp; Seton Creek Blvd.


T.J. Maxx, opened in March 2026 in Hamlin


There’s also an ongoing community conversation surrounding a potential Lifetime Fitness location in the area. While we don't have official confirmation, many local residents are keeping a close eye on the possibility as the land-use application was submitted in July 2025.

There is something special about living in Southwest Orlando, and the way people spend their Saturday mornings, especially in Winter Garden, can turn an ordinary day into a weekly tradition you look forward to. So, what does one do on a Saturday in Winter Garden? It often starts with a leisurely stroll around the famous Winter Garden Farmers Market, coffee in hand, and maybe a breakfast sandwich, selecting your week's produce, and perusing the many booths. Later, life may take you south to Winter Garden Village or Hamlin for your weekly food shop or for any home project you are working on. Whether you are a longtime resident or someone considering a move to Southwest Orlando, this is what a real Saturday looks like here.



Where to Park in Downtown Winter Garden on A Saturday


First things first, where do locals park in downtown Winter Garden? There are plenty of options, and they are mostly free as well. A go-to parking spot is the ideal location not only for the farmers market, but also for the rest of downtown, and that is the parking garage at 160 South Boyd Street. Adjacent to the farmers market, it's three levels, shaded, and offers select charging spots for electric vehicles, along with an elevator for easy access. 


There are several free lots and street parking in downtown, including the newest lot, located in west Winter Garden at 695 West Plant Street, with 54 spots and is 0.3 miles to the Plant Street Market.


For locals who live in the Winter Garden golf cart district, Saturday mornings are made for this. Rolling up to downtown in your golf cart is common and has recently grown in popularity with the district expansion. So, if your dream is golf carting for errands or to dinner, Winter Garden may just be for you. Truly gives a small-town feel with casual energy that is just simply more fun.


Pro Tip &gt;&gt; Getting to the market early will help you get a prime spot in the garage, as it tends to fill first. You'll also have a quieter market (and the first pick of produce). 



The Winter Garden Famers' Market: What to Expect


Where: South Lakeview Avenue and Tremaine Street in downtown Winter Garden, south of Plant Street


When: Every Saturday, rain or shine, from 8 am - 1 pm


There is no shortage of Farmers Markets' in Central Florida, but the Winter Garden version is arguably the most popular, even voted America's Favorite Farmers Market in 2016. The first stop is always coffee, and don't worry, there are several options to pick from, including Piccolo Coffee, Black Brew Bros, Axom, and Three Birds Cafe coffee cart. Now that you have your fuel, it's time to meander.


Local Produce


The local produce at the market is a real draw. From local seasonal fruits like strawberries and watermelons to rows of vegetables, including potatoes (of every variety), fresh herbs, peppers, and so much more. Don't forget to check out the Winter Garden Facebook page for weekly updates on which produce is heading to the market for the week. It's a well-oiled machine with several cash registers (including a cashless payment option). The line keeps moving, so you can go on to the rest of your morning. This past Saturday, sunflowers were at the market, and it felt like every third person had a bundle of the beautiful flowers in their arms. 


Arts &amp; Goods Made Locally


Beyond the produce, there are local artists selling everything from jewelry to original artwork, vendors with homemade breads and pastries, including salted pretzels (a must-grab). The homemade guacamole, hummus, and hot sauce vendors always have a loyal following for good reason. We recommend not skipping the Bailey Bleus booth with delicious homemade dressings, including their original bleu (although we're partial to their rich ranch variety). 


Eating at The Farmers Market


By now, you've worked up an appetite, and there are some tasty treats to choose from, including breakfast sandwiches from the popular Eggdose and the new Egg Boi booths (check out our blog post about Eggdose for more on why we love them so much). For an in-between-meal snack, the Tornado Taters are a newer addition to the market with their signature twisted potatoes on a stick.


Pro Tip &gt;&gt; Park in the shaded garage and bring a cooler with ice packs to keep your purchases cool while you meander around town or grab lunch. 



Moving into Downtown: Lunch, Centennial Plaza, and Plant Street Market


After the market, the next move is yours, whether it be stopping with kids at the popular fountain and splash pad to let out some energy (and cool off), heading down Plant Street for lunch at a local eatery, or to the popular Plant Street Market for a local brew. 


Plant Street is truly the heart of downtown Winter Garden. The West Orange Trail runs right through the middle of it, which means on any given Saturday, you will see cyclists, joggers, and families utilizing the trail. Centennial Plaza


Located directly in the middle of Plant Street, this is where small-town vibes take over (cue the Hallmark movie energy). Wrought iron benches and swings circle the plaza's icon fountain and it is the ideal location to bring a book, or our favorite, people watching. It's truly the kind of place where you sit down with your market finds or your cup of coffee and just watch the Saturday morning unfold around you.


There is no shortage of downtown restaurants for lunch. There are two standout lunch options are The Whole Enchilada, serving Mexican food (don't miss the rooftop terrace for sunset views over downtown). Another option is AJ's Pizza Joint, which features a variety of pies, including New York, Detroit, and Sicilian styles, so no matter what style of pizza is your favorite, AJ's likely has a slice for you.


Plant Street Market


Heading a bit further west on Plant Street is the Plant Street Market. With most food stalls opening around 11am on Saturdays, the market comes alive with those looking for a bite to eat or a local brew. This enclosed food hall is anchored by the Crooked Can Brewing Company, which alone is a reason to show up.

Norigami Sushi Bar, an 8-seat Michelin Bib Gourmand-recognized restaurant three years running (2023, 2024, and 2025)


Michael's Ali Coal-Fired Pizza

There is seating inside and out, and parking is nearby. You'll find many people from the farmers' market making their way over after finishing at the market.


Shopping Along Plant Street in Winter Garden





There are several local shops to pop in and out of in downtown, and this Saturday, we stopped by the LiveTrends store at 279 Tremaine Street (adjacent to the market). This boutique shop is filled to the brim with live plants, succulents, home goods, candles, and tasty treats (we suggest trying the Colombian chocolate bars). It's the kind of store where you go in for a succulent and leave with four things you didn't know you needed. There is so much to explore and is great for grabbing a gift for a friend or graduation.



Winter Garden Village: The Practical Side of Saturday


Leaving the slow Saturday start at the market, it's likely time to make that Target run or head to Lowe's for your next household project. Winter Garden Village is a shopping hub for making everyday life happen. Big box stores are found here, so you can get all of those weekly food shops completed, and don't forget some fun shopping along the way. Here are just a few of the stores you'll find at WGV:

Dining options abound with quick-service and sit-down options, including Bonefish Grill, Pizzeria UNO, First Watch, and coming soon, Seasons 52 (just to name a few). Across Daniel's Road, you'll find even more restaurants. Directly behind is the AdventHealth Winter Garden Hospital and Medical Services.



Heading South: Hamlin &amp; Horizon West


Further south on SR-429 is where the newer side of Winter Garden lives. Over the last several years, incredible growth has occurred here, and Hamlin Town Center is the central hub for the greater Horizon West community. Here, this everyday life hub has a little something for every need. Saturdays here can mean completing your weekly grocery stop, exercising, sitting down for a meal, or having a bit of fun too.




For groceries: Publix and a Walmart Supercenter are your weekly stops for stocking up.


For shopping &amp; services: There is a stand-alone Sephora and Ace Hardware. You can get your nails done, work out, or grab a bite to eat at one of the many eateries. (Check out the Maple Street Biscuit Company or Home State Brewing)


For entertainment: Cinepolis has been an original staple here and is a luxury cinema, Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park, and PopStroke


For Fitness: Anytime Fitness, Cyclebar, and a proposed Life Time Fitness





Horizon West Regional Park: Getting Outdoors


Saturdays are becoming a lot more active in Winter Garden now that phase 1A of the Horizon West Regional Park is complete. Located north of the town center in Hamlin, this park will feature over 200 acres upon completion.

If you’ve driven down Maguire Road &amp; Main Street in recent weeks and wondered what the construction is along the road, you’re not alone.


The construction marks the beginning of the Ward Trail, a new multi-modal path that will connect parts of Windermere in a whole new way. Once finished, it’s expected to make daily movement safer and more convenient.


Located near the north end of town along Maguire Road and Main Street, extending over the canal connecting Lake Down to Wauseon Bay and beyond to Lake Butler, the project is already taking shape. From dirt movement and tree removal to the early stages of a new bridge, there is a noticeable transformation underway.



A New Chapter for Windermere Trails


If you’ve been living in Windermere, Florida, you know the charm of its paths throughout downtown, and this project will further enhance the experience for bikers, dog walkers, and residents who access the path to get to and from the local elementary school.


This is not just a cosmetic improvement. It is a meaningful infrastructure upgrade that has been in the works for over 10 years. Once completed, the trail will stretch just under a mile, connecting North Drive to Park Avenue and creating a smoother, more accessible route through the heart of Windermere.

One of the most noticeable improvements coming to the Windermere trails system is the redesign of the path for real, everyday use. The current pedestrian bridge along this route has long been a challenge. It is narrow, steep, and difficult for multiple people to navigate at the same time. A 14-foot-wide bridge replacing the existing narrow structure

The West Orange Trail has gained popularity over the years with both visitors and local trail enthusiasts, and most people in Central Florida have heard of it, but knowing of a trail and really knowing the trail are two very different things. This local guide to the West Orange Trail in Winter Garden, Oakland, Ocoee, and Apopka highlights hidden gems, food stops, and can’t-miss experiences along one of Central Florida’s most popular trails. If you're not familiar, here's a quick overview:


Quick Facts about the West Orange Trail




The West Orange Trail is located in Orange County, Florida, west of Orlando.


The West Orange Trail is 22.32 miles long and runs from Oakland, Winter Garden, Ocoee, and ends in Apopka.


The trail surface is paved and 14 feet wide. 


The West Orange Trail is a multi-use trail and permits bicycles, mobility devices, pedestrians, skates, skateboards, horses, and electric bikes (some restrictions apply).


There are 10 stations and outposts along the length of The West Orange trail, which include amenities like restrooms, picnic tables, parking, playgrounds, and more.


The trail is open daily from sunrise to sunset.


Leashed pets are permitted.





9 Top Stops On the West Orange Trail


1 | Oakland Nature Preserve (Oakland, Florida)


A hamlet of a downtown, and as its name alludes to the many towering Oaks, Oakland is a true trail town with the West Orange Trail being a focal point running directly through its town center. Home to our 1st hidden gem: The Oakland Nature Preserve. This 128-acre preserve features 3.5 miles of nature trails, including an exercise loop and a bird blind. A boardwalk leads visitors above wetlands that lead to Lake Apopka. A covered pavilion provides a shaded stop to enjoy views of the water before heading back. There is no fee to enter, but donations are accepted.


&gt;&gt; Pro Tip: Don't miss the Oakland Nature Preserve events. They offer tours, kids' activities, birding walks, and so much more. Right now, Firefly Nights is happening on select dates in March and April, where the preserve stays open later in the evening to explore the boardwalk to find fireflies.



2 | Oakland Arts &amp; Heritage Center (Oakland, Florida)


The 2nd hidden gem on our guide is the Healthy West Orange Arts &amp; Heritage Center in the Town of Oakland. Located in the heart of downtown, the center is known for celebrating local art and for its Annual Heritage Day event held in January. Don't miss grabbing a scoop of ice cream or a hot dog at Oakley's Trailside Treats. Be sure to head to the Farmers Market held on the 2nd &amp; 4th Thursday of the month from 9am - 2pm. You'll find everything from produce to locally made food and handicrafts.


&gt;&gt; Pro Tip: Locals know to head to Yoga on the Porch at the Center on Mondays at 6:30pm. (You don't need a reservation, and while there is no set fee, donations are accepted.)



3 | Butterfly Garden at Tildenville Outpost (Winter Garden, Florida)


Another hidden gem along the West Orange Trail is our 3 spot to add to your must-visit list. The Tildenville School Road Outpost is home to the Butterfly Garden. Explore the garden, a pollinator habitat created with native plants to attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. While keeping your eye out for butterflies, you'll see some cheeky artwork pop up, including painted rocks and fairy houses. 


&gt;&gt; Pro Tip: There is public parking available next to the Garden, so even if you're not coming from the trail, you have an easy place to stop and enjoy the garden.



4 | Plant Street Market (Winter Garden, Florida)


Local favorite 4 Spot, located in downtown Winter Garden, Plant Street Market is one of the most popular food stops along the West Orange Trail to get some food and refreshments. Here, you'll find several food and drink stalls, including the new Jam Hot Chicken, known for its bold &quot;Jam&quot; heat level. Outside patio seating is perfect to grab a local brew at Crooked Can Brewing, and for a tasty snack, check out Nosh Popcorn or Sir Benji's Donuts for a sweet treat. You really can't go wrong with any of the stalls here, so feel free to mix and match for sharing.


&gt;&gt; Pro Tip: If you try out Jam Hot Chicken (and we recommend you do), heed this advice: If you're a typical mild-to-medium wing heat level when you go out for wings, start with the mild (and thank us later). For those brave souls with mouths of steel, have at the &quot;Jam&quot; hot level; just be sure to get a cold beverage to wash it down.



5 | Rosallie Le French Cafe (Winter Garden, Florida)


Stop 5 is a well-deserved sweet treat after a day on the trail. If drooling over a display of flaky croissants, fruity glazed tarts, and fluffy quiche feels is what you call a perfect Sunday morning, then Rosallie Cafe may be for you. Don't let the display case cloud your judgment because their full menu of brunch all-day delights, lunch bites, and coffees are not to be missed. Located on Plant Street, near the Centennial Plaza, this local favorite has an outdoor patio and indoor seating.


&gt;&gt; Pro Tip: Take your goodies to go, then head over to Centennial Plaza and grab a bench or a swing next to the fountain for the best small town vibes while you enjoy your treat.



6 | Central Florida Railroad Museum (Winter Garden, Florida)


All aboard on stop 6 at the Central Florida Railroad Museum in downtown Winter Garden. Located on S. Boyd Street between W Joiner &amp; Tremaine Street, this museum is only 1 block from the West Orange Trail. Explore exhibits with train artifacts, including maps, signage, and more. Currently on display is a large collection of dining car china, including pieces from multiple railroads across the country, such as the Florida East Coast Railway &amp; Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, dating back to the 1920s.

Heading north into Ocoee is The Backyard, an outdoor dining experience that is located just off the West Orange Trail and West Road, just west of the 429. Multiple food vendors have come together to offer delicious foods ranging from pizza and tacos to barbecue, sushi, and more In addition to the food options, the self-pour taps feature 24 options, including beer, wine, and more, with some local selections. With a covered patio and outdoor seating, fire pits, and yard games, there are plenty of reasons to stick around and hang out.

8 | The Nauti Lobstah (Apopka, Florida)


History and good food collide in our 8 gem located in downtown Apopka. The Nauti Lobstah, right off the West Orange Trail at S. Forest Avenue &amp; W. Orange Blossom Trail, is housed in the historic train depot from the late 1920s, which was used to transport oil barrels. Part of the charm of this restaurant is catching a glimpse of the toy train set that runs along the main dining room. Known for their large selection of tasty seafood, including the lobster rolls (our personal favorite), and the famous 2-foot lobster roll, complete with 2lbs of Maine lobster, is not to be missed 


&gt;&gt; Pro Tip: Don't miss walking around the restaurant. This original structure has plenty of history to explore throughout.



9 | Kit Land Nelson Park (Apopka, Florida)


Last, but certainly not least, is the Kit Land Nelson Park. Located near the Nauti Lobstah at E. 1st Street and N Park Ave, this park is a great place to relax at the north end of the trail. This 5-acre park features a central gazebo, shaded picnic areas, a splash pad (to cool off after a long bike ride), playground, and racquetball courts. Next to the park is the Apopka Station, the northern-most station along the West Orange Trail, which offers parking, a playground, and restrooms.

In 1968, five lakefront homes were built through the land acquisition entity Recreacres, Inc.
