This post may come as a shock to some and maybe not so much a shock to others. I don’t know any other way to say it other than to just say it, so here it is. As of the end of this year, 2012, I will be closing Rebekah Wright Photography. I WILL still be shooting things that I have already scheduled, but I will not be taking on any new clients or new bookings from here on out.

It makes me sad to type this, but it’s also good in it’s own way. You see, I have decided to go a different route. Many of you may know that photography isn’t my only job. I have been working at a screen printing shop here in Versailles for the past 4 years. I also worked there during high school and some summers during college. My bosses had decided to retire and after a lot of consideration my dad and I decided to buy the business. So, as of May 1, I have been running our new screen printing business, Wright Printing and Promotional Advertising

I still love to shoot, and will probably continue as a hobby, but after this year, my days of being booked every weekend for a wedding or a shoot are going to be ending. I have loved getting to know all my clients and some have become great friends. I will gladly refer people to my second shooters if they are in need of a photographer.

So, from now on, I’ll be doing design and running the new business. Feel free to give me a call or an email if you need any tshirts, printing or promotional products!

The Art of the Quick Change

Ladies know, mastering the wardrobe quick change is an art form. In order to do it well, you must always be thinking when you’re shopping, “Can I think of at least 3 outfits I can wear this with?” The same basic rules apply when choosing your outfits for photos. In order to quickly change and still have enough variety to your looks, it helps to choose items that you can quickly add a jacket or sweater to and create a completely different look. Take the outfits in today’s round up. The bow blouse is cute and casual with cuffed jeans and flats. Add a cardigan or jacket for something different. Dress it up with a skirt and pumps. Or, get even more comfy and pair the cuffed jeans and a breton stripe top, with or without the cardigan. Flex your wardrobe-stretching muscles and see how good it feels to “make it work.”

Engaging color

When getting pictures taken, many couples gravitate toward the tried-and-true white and light blues. I say, don’t be afraid of color! Of course, neutrals go a long way to tame bright colors, so play with both in your e-session outfits. This yellow skirt is sunny and colorful, but still muted if a lot of color is out of your comfort zone. If one of you is wearing a bolder print or pattern, the other should tone it down with solid or neutral pieces to balance things out. I love the idea of throwing on a scarf that picks up a color in your guy’s shirt. As always, the best advice is to make sure you are both comfortable in what you’re wearing.

His & Hers (more e-session outfits)

This week’s Fashion Friday is once again geared toward what to wear for your e-session. If you missed last week’s post on casual looks, check it out here. For your dressy looks, consider something vintage like these Mad Men-inspired outfits. Pick an era that speaks to you and have fun with it. Dressing up in clothing from another decade can be very freeing; allowing you to essentially take on another character and actually help you feel less self-conscious in front of the camera. There is a line though. Don’t get too costume-y. If you end up feeling like you’re in one of those old-time saloon photos from a family vacation to Branson, take it down a notch (or ten). Make sure you and your betrothed are both comfortable with whatever outfits you choose. If you force it, the photos will show that.

Coordinated effort (what to wear for your e-session)

Many engaged couples find it more difficult to figure out what to wear for engagement photos than to choose what to wear for the wedding! While there are as many options as there are personalities and styles, a good rule of thumb is to coordinate, but not match. Don’t think that you have to mask your personality by dressing super fancy either. Choose at least one dressier outfit and one casual one. Wear that outfit in your closet that makes you feel amazing, you know the one I’m talking about! Here is an option for a casually coordinated engagement session. Not exactly your style? Don’t worry, we’ll revisit this Fashion Friday subject in the coming weeks and give you more options to consider.

Fashion forward

This week’s Fashion Friday post features the first set I ever made on Polyvore. I wanted to create an outfit for senior pictures that would look trendy for the time, but also classic in a way that you can look back on it in 10 or 20 years and not cringe! I also think this look would work equally well if you are shooting your engagement photos. I think a red lipstick is always a good idea, just be sure to choose the right shade for your skintone.

Since we focused on the girls last week, I thought I would show some ideas for little boys in today’s Fashion Friday post. So many times I have seen a white or blue button-down shirt and jeans or khakis for little boys in pictures (or worse, an entire family in white). It certainly doesn’t look bad, but it doesn’t show any of the personality that a photographer hopes to capture. I am of the belief that what you wear has a big impact on how you carry yourself and how you feel about yourself. This is particularly true of children. Put a little boy in a hot, scratchy, uncomfortable outfit because it’s “just so darling,” and you will get one upset kid to remember forever. Instead, dress your boys in comfortable and colorful clothing that they would feel free to play in. You will be happier with the end result, I promise.
