John's opinion is very positive; he finds the movie hasn't made Eva worst by shortening many scenes. He also noticed many improvements; furthermore, he believes the film is totally new and no scene from the series has been recycled. It was auctioned for an unbelievable final bid of 13,727,000 yen (about US$121,100) on September 7.
The human-sized Spear had been presented at the exhibition "Imagination of Evangelion", on the occasion of Tokyo's J-Art Project (July 21-August 3), together with other objects, such as a display of food on a dish modeled after the amputated body of the Lilith angel and surrounded by smaller Spear of Longinus utensils. The exhibition was divided into four zones: "Eva at Work", the Evangelion Store, the "Evangelion inspired - new generation" display (made by students who entered Bandai Visual's design competition), and the "Evangelion inspired - professional designers" display. According to the distributor Nikkatsu, the movie sold 236,158 tickets, for an amount of 280 million yen (about US$2.4 million). The theatres showing the film were 84; those who had planned to watch the movie at the 224-seat Cinema Square Tokyu theatre had to move to the 1,046-stadium-seat Milano 1 just a few moments before the screening, because of the growing crowd. Milano 1 alone sold 12,500 tickets during the weekend, for a 15-million-yen (US$130,000) weekend box office take. Each screening of the movie in this and other national theatres earned an average of 3 million yen (US$30,000), taking the movie straight to #1. In particular, Garten (of Memento) gives a review according to which animation seems to be amazing. The story appears to develop more clearly; Shinji is maybe (if it is possible) better characterized and it's better shown the way everyone at Nerv, included Misato, uses him as a tool. There are some differences between You are (not) alone and the series: Misato already knows Lilith is in central dogma; moreover, it's her who takes Shinji in there. Kaworu, whom appeared only in the latest episodes of the original series, makes his own appearance after the 3rd angel is defeated.
The opinion of Shingo from Heisei Democracy is different. Though the animation level still looks amazing, plot developing quality seems lacking new original artistic material. The story is maybe told in a way too similar to the original series; still, Eva 1.0 seems not to provide enough background for a full comprehension of next episodes (especially as for first time viewers). Early Kaworu appearance is seen as a way to court that part of the audience that could could be attracted by him; same is said for the new character presented in final 2.0 preview. According to this preview, Eva 2.0 will introduce redesigned Evangelion units and a new character (and, according to the preview narrator Kotono Mitsuishi, "more fan service-service"). The first EVA units will have a new backpack attachment for an aerial drop sequence (similar to the scene from episode 9 of the Evangelion TV series); it also seems that EVA-04 will appear in animation for the first time. EVA-05 and 06 will be completely redesigned (specifically, the 05 unit will have an eye only). A brunette girl wearing eye-glasses will be introduced as a new character.
There has been a huge merchandising in theatres showing the film; in particular, a booklet with illustrations has been distributed (as happened for the Red Cross Book at The end of Evangelion screening).
