I did it! I really did it!

Wednesday night I was tired and fed up with the world and with life and coming down with a cold and generally just over everyone and everything. So! I said screw it, and instead of doing all the other stuff I should have been doing, I sat down and was all techy. By the end of the night, I had figured out how to use CSS make the splash page you can now see at http://reciprocalwaltz.org, and moved my blog to http://reciprocalwaltz.org/blog/

Amazingly enough, I didn’t break my blog while moving it.

And in theory, the feed still works, and points to /blog/ instead of the main URL. (pleaseFeedburneractuallyworkplease)

Then today I installed Blogher ads and discovered my sidebar wasn’t large enough. So I took my newfound knowledge of CSS learned on Wednesday night, figured out how to make a WordPress child theme using this tutorial, and fixed the width issue. Booya. It is a stopgap measure until I change my layout, but hey, it worked.

Next up, changing my layout a bit. Which will probably take me forever because while I have discovered I really love CSS, I know for a fact I am really bad at graphic design. And I also need to get the posts back up that are currently on ‘private’ because I haven’t gotten around to changing their permalinks yet. But that will have to wait until we’re done moving, because I’ve officially run out of free time this week and have to spend the rest of my evenings doing practical things related to finishing up this move. Meh.

I will say though – this weekend we’re packing our swingset up and moving it to a family member’s yard, and then we officially are 100% moved. WHO-HOO!!

We’re starting to debate about making Blogher ’13 a family vacation. Not the actual Blogher part – that part will be mine, and mine alone – but the going to Chicago part. Turns out it is ‘only’ a ten hour drive. Which, yes, long, but do-able in a day. And RD has never been to Chicago.

Right now, the rudimentary plan would be that I would plan on family time on Wednesday and Thursday morning, with my husband then taking the kids Thursday evening through Saturday. They’d probably go to childcare all day one day so he could tour the city, and then the other day he’d take them someplace (Children’s Museum maybe?) On the way up, I would definitely want to do one of those restaurants where your food comes to you on a train. I’m sure RD will want to go on a tour of Wrigley Field.

I might would duck out for a couple hours on the day they’re in childcare in order to spend some time with him, but otherwise I’d be pretty much out of the picture except late at night.

Christina gave me some useful tips about childcare, as she’s taken kids to Blogher before. Anyone else have any good advice?

Yay, it’s finally spring!

I was supposed to run a Color Me Rad 5k the end of March. Life was obnoxious and got in the way, so it didn’t happen, so now I think I’m going to try to run a 5k in June.

I am both really enjoying running, feeling a little bit like I’m going with the Cool Workout Trend, and wondering why I’m idiotic enough to even attempt this torturous hobby. Today was one of those days that made me feel a bit idiotic. I went out to run and it kicked. my. butt. I ended up stopping after a mile. I was a ridiculous mess.

And then, and this is progress – instead of being all zomg why am I even ATTEMPTING this crap? I reframed it as hey! no where to go but up! And now I am blogging about it. Not because I want to be all LOOK AT ME I AM TRYING TO BE POSITIVE, but because I’m hoping that in three months, I can look back at this post and laugh at the day I couldn’t even run a mile without dying.

Because that day will come, right? RIGHT?

Last week was Spring Break here. You know, it started out great. Everyone was in a good mood. We all needed the break from getting up at o’dark thirty. I didn’t really have anything planned, and RD was working the entire week – but I figured it’d all work out.

And it did, the first part of the week. Kids were happy. I was getting work done. And then Friday hit and…argh. I was so ready to send them back to school. Apparently my limit for mostly unstructured home time while balancing work is five days. I’m going to have to find a way to keep summer a bit structured, because this summer’s childcare plans basically boil down to Camp Mom with a small side of Camp Dad.

We did do a Chuck E. Cheese trip on Thursday for lunch. We’d never been but Sydney was begging. She had fun:

Actually, we all had fun, although it was super loud and kind of expensive. The food was even surprisingly decent. We’ll probably do it again this summer sometime.

–

In other news, the house I thought we were renting? Didn’t work out. Glad we still have the apartment on hold…we went back and forth with looking for another rental house vs. going back to our original plan of renting the apartment and buying a house sometime in the next couple years. I think renting the apartment is winning out – we both like the apartment, it is in a good location and to be honest? Neither of us are up for driving back and forth from here to Atlanta on a house hunting expedition again.

Only five more weeks until we sign the lease there – six or seven until we officially move! Who-hoo!
