Looking for Alaska and any other John Green book: John Green is a master of coming of age and making awkwardness awesome and stabbing you in the emotional heart and making you love him for it.

David Levithan: David Levithan is tied for my number one author so I’m a little biased, but his writing is like perfection and he is so good at taking situations and characters and making it feel like you’re reading your own journal that someone made sound amazing.

Ned Vizzini: Especially Teen Angst?
Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger: Not going to lie, I’m not a fan of this book but it IS sort of a quintessential coming of age book so I wanted to include it. . .
Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler: The premise of this book is awesome and after that I can’t say much because it made me incredibly anxious that I am too much like Min, the main character.

13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher: I love Jay Asher for taking suicide and tackling it in a very different way than I had seen it and covering the gigantic range of emotions that comes with it.

Ellen Hopkins: Ellen Hopkins is amazing at writing coming of age stories that include hard stuff (that is the short dumbed down but true version of how I feel about her books).

Cut by Patricia McCormick: One of the few cutting books that doesn’t make me want to bang my head against a wall.

The Harry Potter Series: One of the best coming of age stories ever and well done enough that you are so glad that it took seven books.

Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld: Really love this book. . . again it reads more in the way that I wish Catcher in the Rye did.

She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb: This is my all-time favorite book so when I talk about it I tend to sound like a blubbering idiot but it is incredible and everyone should read it and I still find it hard to believe that it is written by a man.

Whip It by Shauna Cross: I like the idea of this book more than the actual execution mostly because I wanted it to be longer and I wanted more development of Bliss.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Series by Ann Brashares: The idea of this is ridiculous but Ann Brashares makes it work and makes the friendships between the girls so real that I don’t care about magic jeans.

Welcome to the Dollhouse: Awkwardness in a movie. But still awesome.

The History Boys: This was a play first and I wish I could say that I had seen it, but it is a lovely little movie.

St. Elmo’s Fire: As far as the brat pack movies go, this is one of my favorites.

Dead Poet’s Society: One of my all-time favorite movies. There might be things wrong with it but I am blind to them.

Secondhand Lions: This movie does not get enough credit. . . it is so poignant in such a family friendly way.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape: In my opinion the best Johnny Depp AND best Leonardo DiCaprio movie.

All I Wanna Do: Maybe because I went to a women’s college, but this movie is awesomeness in 97 minutes. AND it has the Daughters of the American Ravioli so you know it has to be good.

Now and Then: I love the concept of the four friends getting together as adults the way so many of us say we will and then don’t.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: I really do like this movie as long as I can separate it from the books because I really love the books and how in-depth they are.

The Goonies: Loooooove it.

Angus: Based on a Chris Crutcher story!!!

Rushmore: My second favorite Wes Anderson movie.

Whip It: I am more forgiving of the lack of time with the movie than the book.

The Squid and the Whale: Oh so painfully awkward and lovely at the same time.

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

Summary from Goodreads:

An inspiring, bittersweet love story about making every day count.

Bryce remembers it like it was yesterday. The scent of chlorine. The blinding crack and flash of pain. Blood in the water.

When she wakes up in the hospital, all Bryce can think of is her disastrous Olympic diving trial. But everything is different now. Bryce still feels seventeen, so how can her little sister be seventeen, too? Life went on without her while Bryce lay in a coma for five years. Her best friend and boyfriend have just graduated from college. Her parents barely speak. And everything she once dreamed of doing—winning a gold medal, traveling the world, falling in love—seems beyond her reach.

But Bryce has changed too, in seemingly impossible ways. She knows things she shouldn’t. Things that happened while she was asleep. Things that haven’t even happened yet. During one luminous summer, as she comes to understand that her dreams have changed forever, Bryce learns to see life for what it truly is: extraordinary.

Details:

Anything But Ordinary by Lara Avery will be released by Hyperion on September 11, 2012.

I’m intrigued by the premise of waking up after five years of being in a coma and having to put your life back together. I’m a bit nervous about the “knowing things she shouldn’t” aspect of the summary. I’m not sure where the premonition plotline will go, but I’m excited to give this book a shot because the rest sounds fantastic.

What are you waiting on this Wednesday?

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

Summary from Goodreads:

Mia’s used to being the perfect teenager: pretty, popular, smart, caring. But that was before she was diagnosed with leukemia. Now, her father has become Captain Cancer Facts and her mother is obsessed with maintaining Mia’s image. Her maybe-more-than-a-friend, Gyver, is judging her decision not to tell the other cheerleaders that she’s sick. Her life’s about to change and she’s terrified by the loss of control.

Mia’s always been superstitious, but as her body starts to feel like it belongs less to her and more to the doctors and their needles, she becomes irrationally dependent on horoscopes, fortune cookies, and good luck charms. As chemotherapy replaces cheerleading and platelets replace parties, Mia just wants normal back. But despite searching for clues in everything from songs on the radio to her Magic 8 Ball, her future is coming up Outlook not so good.

Details:

Send Me a Sign by Tiffany Schmidt will be released by Walker Childrens on October 2, 2012.

Oh look! Another cancer book! But I’m still kind of a sucker for them, especially when they are well done. Most of the books I’ve been reading lately have defied the long-held genre standards, and I hope this one will continue to do so.

What are you waiting on this Wednesday?

I’m moving back to CA soon, which means I’m going to be doing another cross country road trip. Wiki is going to fly to CA to hang out with my dad, and my mom is going to fly out here to help me do the drive. Since we won’t have a dog in the car this time, we’ll be a little less tethered to the vehicle, and hopefully able to make more fun stops and eat real food.

Blog posts will be sparse while I’m finishing up packing and then actually out on the road (though I’ll schedule some in advance). We’re leaving on the 15th and planning to take about a week to do the drive. In the meantime, though, I would appreciate your help with the trip planning!

The route I’ll be taking this time around is going to look something like this:

If you have any tips for things to do, places to eat, or road trip music to listen to along the way, your suggestions are welcome!

I haven’t posted links for the last couple weeks because most of the things going on around the Internet just made me sad, and I probably won’t post much for the next few weeks because I am going to be insanely busy, so here are a few links from this week.

Sarah Ockler wrote a thought-provoking post about race in YA Lit.

Adam of Roof Beam Reader (and others) announced a summer-long readalong of Andrew Smith’s books leading up to the release of Passenger. I’m pretty horrible about reading on a schedule, but I am planning to try because this sounds like a lot of fun.

SYNC released their schedule of summer audiobook downloads.

Veronica Roth wrote this great guide to Divergent for people who haven’t read it in a year and can’t remember stuff but want to read Insurgent. People like me. Many of you have probably already read Insurgent, but I am not allowed to get new books right now, so I will be making use of this in a few weeks, I hope.

Tiffany Schmidt announced her next book, Bright Before Sunrise, which sounds amazing. Also the announcement came with adorable pictures.
