Founded in 1952 by editor Harvey Kurtzman and publisher William Gaines, Mad Magazine's claim to fame is its impact on the entire cultural landscape of the 20th century, satirizing all aspects of life and pop culture, politics, entertainment, and public figures, Its mascot, Alfred E. Neuman, is typically the star of the magazine's cover, with his face often replacing a celebrity or character that is lampooned within the issue. With a silly grin, his well-familiar trademark phrase is "What, me worry?"

Mad Magazine influenced three generations of humorists and easily provoked critical thinking about everything and anyone - politicians, the media, advertising, cartoon characters, you name it. In 2007, Robert Boyd of The Los Angeles Times wrote, "All I really need to know I learned from Mad magazine", going on to assert: "Plenty of it went right over my head, of course, but that's part of what made it attractive and valuable. Things that go over your head can make you raise your head a little higher. The magazine instilled in me a habit of mind, a way of thinking about a world rife with false fronts, small print, deceptive ads, booby traps, treacherous language, double standards, half truths, subliminal pitches and product placements; it warned me that I was often merely the target of people who claimed to be my friend; it prompted me to mistrust authority, to read between the lines, to take nothing at face value, to see patterns in the often shoddy construction of movies and TV shows; and it got me to think critically in a way that few actual humans charged with my care ever bothered to."

When you're done celebrating - repurpose your empties! They make great upcycled vases!

We all know that today is really just a nice excuse to drink Coronas and Margaritas, still there is some real history to this day. The 5th of May commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. Although it is not Mexico's Independence Day, as many believe, this day is celebrated throughout the state of Puebla, Mexico and most certainly throughout The United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and of course a good reason to indulge a bit!

Meanwhile, back to those Coronas and Margaritas. Try these cool recipes, we just had to share, from Bakers Royale...

Foster—a well-known artist, instructor, and collector—began producing self-help art instruction books from his home in Laguna Beach, California. He originally wrote, illustrated, printed, bound, packaged, shipped, and distributed them himself. Although Walter passed away in 1981 at the age of 90, his legacy continues. We have 25 original Walter Foster books available in our Attic store! We wanted to share a few. Aren't the covers great? They have a cool retro feel to them.
This one reminds me…The Desert Botanical Garden's Spring Butterfly Exhibit is going on until May 8th. If you haven't already experienced this event, it is so worth it! It's almost magical as you stroll among hundreds of fluttering butterflies.
Submitted by Andrew Medway.

One of my favorite aspects of vintage collectibles is the aspect of getting to play amateur detective. I particularly love learning about the people who may not be household names but have lived interesting and productive lives. On the eve of the Final Four a basketball story seemed appropriate.

In the 1947 yearbook for Texas Wesleyan College (now Texas Wesleyan University) we found this entry for Clifton McNeely, basketball all-American and the nation's leading scorer that year. McNeely, born in 1919, was no youngster having already served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. After the 1947 season McNeely was drafted by the Pittsburgh Ironmen with the first overall selection of 1947 Basketball Association of America, the forerunner of the NBA. In a decision that if made today would shock the world, McNeely chose not to play professional basketball opting instead to stay in Texas and coach high school basketball. In thirteen years as the head coach at Pampa High School in Pampa, Texas, McNeely won four state championships. McNeely posted a 320-43 record, winning back-to-back titles in 1953-54 and 1958-59. From 1952-55, the Pampa High School Harvesters won an impressive 72 straight games. The gym at Pampa was named the McNeely Fieldhouse in his honor and he was later inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame, the Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame and the Texas Wesleyan University Hall of Fame. And what happened to his fiance Peg? They were married on June 14, 1947. They had three children and their son Phil went on to become a successful basketball coach in his own right, winning three Class 5A high school state championships at Duncanville.

In January 2011 McNeely (who passed away in 2003) was honored at a reunion of 20 of his former players at halftime of a Pampa High basketball game. "I think you have to talk about the man he was first of all," said Jim Bond, who played for McNeely's first two state championship teams. "In basketball as in life he was a great role model for all of us."

Here's to Clifton McNeely, athlete, educator and role model. Thanks for letting us have a peek at your inspiring life.

Citrus Crate Art. Artist, Lori Landis was our host. She began the evening by sharing her story about her art and her creative process. She is a truly inspiring person. Her paintings are vibrant with color, texture and brushstrokes that draw you in. You can visit Lori at her working studio/gallery every Thursday "Art Walk Night".
On this St. Patrick's Day, the suave and debonair actor Pierce Brosnan is our honorary Irishman for the day. Remember the TV series from the 80's…Remington Steele? That pretty much launched his career in the United States. After that he was onto the big screen. He was the fifth actor to play the lead role in the James Bond film series. He starred in four of those movies and also has in so many others, including The Thomas Crown Affair. We have these original movie posters for sale in our "Attic". BTW, did you know that he holds both Irish and American citizenship? So, Mr. Brosnan, we tip our hat to you. Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!
Also known as Fat Tuesday. Its name represents the last night of eating rich and fattening foods before fasting begins of the Lenten season.

Since New Orleans is the city most associated with this celebration, we thought we'd share one of our vintage artworks.

Our giclée print comes from an original vintage postcard circa 1930's.

We can't end today's post without sharing a few very festive pics!

Salt River Fields at Talking Stick

The newest stadium built for MLB spring training is the $100 million Salt River Fields at Talking Stick spring training complex on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Scottsdale, Arizona. The complex is home to the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies, and contains a 11,000-seat stadium, separate clubhouses for each team, and 12 full-size practice fields (six for each team.) Both teams previously conducted spring training in Tucson, Arizona, bringing a total of 15 teams to the Cactus League in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

According to the Arizona Republic, the Cactus League generates more than $300 million a year in economic impact to the greater Phoenix metropolitan area economy. The new Salt River Fields at Talking Stick complex is the latest of eight new stadiums built in the Valley of the Sun over the past 20 years. The Arizona Republic newspaper reports that more than $500 million has been spent on “building eight new stadiums and renovating two others for the 15 teams in the Valley.”

The 15 teams that make up the Cactus League: Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers.
Although this year is the Academy's 83rd year, we thought we'd share this 75th Anniversary Commemorative Poster from our movie poster archives.
This is its 83rd year! We decided to look back at some of the winners of the past. In our Attic we have dozens of programs that were printed for The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The event these were printed for was the Academy's movie screening series titled, "Facets of the Diamond: 75 Years of Best Picture Winners", shown at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. This very cool series began showing in May 2002, starting with the very first Oscar winner, Wings from 1927-28. Then in chronological order, a different Oscar winning movie was screened each Monday night, following up to the 75th Academy Awards held on March 23, 2003. Here are a few of those programs from our archives.

We found this charming, vintage Valentine's Day Card dated 1926. Brings back memories of handmade cards with doilies and construction paper. We love the inside, too! How sweet.
And with Valentine's Day almost here,
it's the perfect moment.

Found in our archive of high school and college yearbooks dating from the 30's
through the 50's, this letter and newspaper clipping caught our eye, our imaginations... and our hearts! It seems this young woman, a Norma Fink, had quite the admirer.

You gotta' love his devilish candor. He was smitten!

And he sent this poem along, too.

Well, in spite of that poem, she appears to have been quite accomplished in her field of law. She became the first female prosecutor in Texas. Later she became an entertainment attorney in Los Angeles. Among her clients were Sam Peckinpah, Christopher Lee and Slim Pickens, to name few.

And no, she never did marry the man who wrote her the letter.

You think it was the poem?

A Bit of Super Bowl History.

Our intrepid collector of memorabilia, and avid sports fan Andy, heard this on the Mike & Mike Show on ESPN Radio this past Monday, January 31st.

Pat Summerall, legendary NFL player and announcer, told a great story about his part in broadcasting the very first Super Bowl in 1967 at The Los Angeles Coliseum. According to Summerall, the game which was then known as the First AFL-NFL World Championship Game, was considered little more than "an afterthought". It was broadcast by both NBC and CBS. The only time two networks have done so simultaneously.

Summerall and former Giants teammate Frank Gifford, (later married to Kathy Lee Gifford), were sharing broadcasting duties for CBS, Summerall announcing the first half while Gifford worked the sideline. At halftime they switched places with Summerall going to the sideline. As soon as he reached the sideline, he was was told to go ask Vince Lombardi, head coach of the Green Bay Packers, to please redo the kickoff because the TV cameras had missed it while interviewing Bob Hope! He refused, but someone else spoke to Lombardi and they had an official "do-over" for the second half kickoff, of the game that later became known as Super Bowl I.

You can hear Pat Summerall discuss the 1967 Super Bowl I, his part in the 1958 NFL Championship game known as "The Greatest Game Ever Played", and more in the complete interview here.

We want to pass the word along...
