Here in the central part of New Jersey this year, Kosher for Passover Pepsi was abundant while Coke was even more scarce than last year. I am not Jewish so I cannot profess to be an expert on this matter, but this is my understanding: During Passover, Jewish law states that they are not to eat (or drink) grains that have been in contact with water for more than 18 minutes. (Read more here) Since most soft drinks are made with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-fructose_corn_syrup" high fructose corn syrup, they’re not allowed.

To avoid a drop in sales during Passover in areas with large Jewish populations (like the New York metro area), bottlers will make limited batches of their beverages with sugar as opposed to high fructose corn syrup. This is the way the beverages were originally formulated. In the 1980’s, corn prices fell (combined with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-fructose_corn_syrup#Use_as_a_replacement_for_sugar>increased sugar tariffs), and this lead to the adoption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) for many things.

A lot of people who have been to Mexico or otherwise had Mexican Coke notice it tastes different. That’s because Mexico doesn’t have as much surplus corn and high taxes on sugar, and their Coke bottlers still use the original recipe. Here in the US, Passover is generally the one time of the year where you can purchase quantity of sugar-sweetened Coke at normal prices and not have to pay shipping.

For more about Passover Coke, listen to NPR Story from a few years back.

Back to the point, today I picked up a 12 pack of cans of Pepsi Throwback. Figuring that it would be the same as Passover Pepsi, I picked up a two liter and compared the labels. The Passover Pepsi had Citric Acid listed on the ingredient list, whereas Pepsi Throwback didn’t. Not sure of the who and whys, but, it’s different.

As for the taste? Anyone will tell you that a soda from a can tastes different than a soda from a 2-liter bottle. But, both the Pepsi Throwback and the Kosher for Passover Pepsi lack the mouthcoating sweet that “normal” Pepsi has… and that’s a good thing.

Sunday morning… Ahh… Time to relax and play some games.

I just got my Warhammer Online pre-release codes on Friday and spent a good chunk of Friday night and Saturday downloading the 9 gigabyte client. I get it installed and running… it’s okay. I mean, the frame rate sucks compared to World of Warcraft on the same computer. I don’t know how much of that is “beta code” and debugging/lack of optimization, or if that is because it requires more power to make the pretty graphics.

I get my coffee and some toast, get settled at my desk and launch the Warhammer client… authentication failed. Oh, that’s right… the beta is ending. I check the website, and yep, they shut it down early this morning. No more Warhammer for me until Tuesday.

So, I launch World of Warcraft and login… “Your prepaid time has expired.” What? I don’t use prepaid game cards, I have a subscription that charges my credit card. I login to my credit card company and everything looks okay. I login to the Warcraft account management page, and it all looks okay. My account is enabled, however, it says that my next credit card change is pending on September 12th. I look at my clock… but today is the 14th? What the hell?

I call customer service, and they’re only open during the week. I go on the forums and see a bunch of other people with the same problem and the response from the Blizzard rep is “I can’t do anything about this, you’ll have to call the billing department on Monday.” Awesome.

So, I guess I’ll have to do laundry instead.

We have been exploring some of the local eateries. We found two good diners. Still looking for the perfect pizza, though. This morning, I went out by myself in search for breakfast. I tried a diner that we had driven past, but it was lackluster. There isn’t a lot one can do to make bacon and eggs spectacular, but they didn’t really try. I was a little disappointed. I decided to stop at a local coffee shop called Brewed Awakenings. Nice people, the food looks and smells awesome. It has more customers in a much smaller area. The coffee is good. I think we have a winner.

I will have to come back here, for sure.
