On Tuesday I was invited down to Lawrence to share a lot of new Record Machine releases with Richard Gintowt’s Lawrence.com Podcast. I played several new songs from upcoming releases. You can hear songs from State Bird, Max Justus, Perhapsy, Capybara, The Parade Schedule, Sam & Dan Billen, Caleb Winn and new solo song from Sam Billen.

First thing first we have a few exciting upcoming Kansas City shows. One is a not so secret basement show on July 18th with State Bird, Max Justus, Parade Schedule, and Capybara. We aren’t going to release the address for the show for another week. So keep your eyes on twitter for more infomation. We also have another showcase we are throwing on August 5th at Czar Bar with Capybara, Perhapsy, and Sam Billen. So that is 6 of our bands coming to KC in just a short time.

Capybara

We have signed Kansas City band Capybara and are going to re-release a new mastered version of their debut record Try Brother next month. They are going to be on tour for over 3 months from August to December. The tour will cover all parts of the country so you will have plenty of time and options to hear them.

Sam & Dan Billen

Sam & Dan Billen have worked on creating a documentary soundtrack for Porubsky’s Deli in Topeka. The record will also come out next month as a digital only release. Sam has also recorded a digital ep for us that we will be releasing next month as the song of the month.

The Parade Schedule

We are shooting for a September release of The Parade Schedule – Seeds To Be Planted, Trees To Be Cut.They are going to be going playing several shows in July and August. Check the shows page for information. We are going to be launching their first song of the month next week with their song Old.

This Tuesday is the digital release of Perhapsy – Perhapsy you will be to get it at Itunes, Emusic, and Amazon.com. The physical cd will be ready in time for their tour in August. Which is starting to coming together nicely. If you are able to help out in the cities that are yet to be booked that would be great.

The new record from Max Justus is entitled No Mercy and will be released on July 14th. The new record finds Max taking a more aggressive sound then on his last record Five Leaping Leopards. You can download his new track Bending Space and Time from Pitchfork’s Forkcast right now!

TSD is a collaborative duo made up of vocalist/musician Movement and producer Source One. Based out of Atlanta, they crossed paths – whether by chance or destiny – in 2004 and began exchanging musical tastes, beats, and life experiences since. Movement, a songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist, paints audible portraits of pop music, dub, rap, and r&b into one bucket of creativity and energy, while Source One outlines the canvas and fills in the details with the art of sampling, sound-manipulation, and glitch layering. In their eyes, sound has no boundaries and neither do they. Together, the two combine their love and passion for good music into, what they call, “future crunk.”

If this is what the future holds I want to be on this dance floor.

Also earlier this month we shared some Cobra songs for our Song of the Month and I couldn’t help but repost Cobra’s most recent song. It is the original version of one my favorite State Bird songs “I Don’t Luv U Anymore”. Introduction: Several years ago Nathan put out my band Colonel Rhodes debut EP. We met through a mutual friend and Nathan happened to like our band.

How have you been spending your days?

I work for Polyvinyl Record Co and it takes up a lot of my time. Probably too much of my time now that I think about it.

Where have you been spending your days or evenings?
Mostly on my couch watching movies. Some times I am at shows in San Francisco though.

What has been in your ears?
Lately the new Vetiver record Tight Knit and the Paul McCartney cover Bodies of Water did for the song Dear Boy. Oh and the new Camera Obscura record. All fit very nicely with spring time.

What has been inspiring or refreshing to you lately?
Spring time for sure. And that Bodies of Water cover of Dear Boy. I can’t get over that song.

Earliest Influence that you can think of?
Musically I’ve got to go with Bob Dylan.

Best thing you have seen on a little or big screen in a while?
I saw Sunshine Cleaning a few days ago and enjoyed it. One other one that is a bit old at this point but I can’t get over is Persepolis. Amazing film.

Last best show you have been to?
I saw Efterklang at Emo’s on Saturday night of SXSW a few weeks back. It was one of the most magical shows I can remember. They played a few new songs that still swim around in my head most days. I can’t wait to hear those songs when they finally do get recorded.

Video: Cobra – Natural Light Redux

Cobra is an ever evolving solo project from Coby Hartzler of State Bird. Each week Coby posts a new song to his blog(www.jacobra.squarespace.com). The blog is a interesting glimpse into a new project as it develops and prepares for full on debut later this year. At times the songs are a bait and switch evolving from simple lo-fi folk and building into full on post-rock. Other times they are the same complex folk songs that you have come to expect from Coby. You might even see some of these songs turn into State Bird songs as is the case with Uh Oh from their 4 New Songs ep. Here is just a sampling of some of our favorites. Perhapsy is playing this Saturday at the Festival of Faith and Music in Grand Rapids, MI. They will be playing alongside David Bazan, The Hold Steady, Lupe Fiasco, Over the Rhine and many more!. We are very proud to have them be apart of this prestigious festival.

The Culture of Me showed Perhapsy some love this week:

Dense and delicate songs that seem to meander until their end, Ann Arbor-born by way of Mansfield, Ohio Derek Barber aka Perhapsy pours layers upon layers of instruments (from the token guitar, bass and drums, to glockenspiel, saxophone, accordions and keys) in his debut effort, a mostly-instrumental experiment in somberness and hope.

We are back home from the always wild SXSW Festival. It was a great time and Max Justus had a great set. The Lose Control Party at Canvas was pretty much always packed and had a line around the block. Luckily Max played Friday night between Casio Kids and The Golden Filter. They two of the hottest bands at the festival and everybody was packed in tight while Max was playing. The photos should give you an idea of what the crowd was like at Lose Control. We are all very excited about the upcoming Perhapsy record that we are releasing in May. This will be the first release from Derek as Perhapsy but he is a label veteran. You have heard his guitar work on The Winston Jazz Routine and Every Gentle Air records we have released so you should be more the familiar. We have added our favorite track from the record The Bow Song to our player on the right. Also this Month’s Song of The Month is a new demo Derek was nice enough to send over.

Max Justus will be at this years SXSW festival. He will be playing Friday March 20th at the Lose Control Party.  The show is free but you need to RSVP here if you plan on coming.
