According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the average American has a commute that takes more than 25 minutes each way. Naturally, as Americans, the majority of us believe we are self-sufficient and drive to work.

In fact, AAA says 86 percent of Americans rely on driving their vehicle to get them to and from work each day.

With gas prices constantly putting pressure on our wallets, it’s important to have a good, reliable and economic commuter car if you have to make the daily trek to the office or out to job sites. Here’s some of our picks for used cars you can buy for cheaper and will be a good commuter investment:

1. Honda Civic – The Civic is a tried and true veteran of the hard-working, heavy-commuting over-achiever. Do more with less.

2. Toyota Corolla – If there’s one car company that knows fuel efficiency, it’s Toyota. We’re picking the Corolla for this list because of it’s ability to fill so many needs/desires in a commuter car. It’s not the super small Mini, Smart ForTwo or even Toyota Yaris, so you can carry a couple of passengers comfortably and cruise along quicker in the carpool lane.

3. Chevrolet Volt – Going for environmentally friendly as well? The Chevy Volt is the commuter car of choice. You may have to pay a little more for the Volt than a couple of the other cars on this list, but once you’re getting 90-100 miles per gallon while making your daily commute, you will forget about that.

4. Honda Odyssey – Does your heavy commute include dropping the kids off at school and swinging by to grab co-workers? The Odyssey is your commuter choice. Roomy and comfortable, you’ll appreciate the Odyssey’s commute-ability when your co-workers vote you employee of the month…every month.

5. Ford Fusion Hybrid – Ford wasn’t really known for its ability to be fuel efficient recent forays with the EcoBoost engines in the Fusion and Flex models (among others). The Fusion Hybrid gives you great miles per gallon while still being a roomy and semi-luxurious sedan.

6. Kia Sportage – If you are a SUV fan, but are concerned about the fuel efficiency, we’re recommending the Kia Sportage. Find a Sportage with the all-wheel-drive package if you routinely have to commute in bad weather. Safe and reliable.

7. Audi A4 – For the boardroom and business on a budget type, there is the Audi A4. It’s luxurious and also economical. The A4 has a much lower starting price than any Mercedes with the same type of comfort and ride. Good fuel economy is also part of the allure.

8. Fisker Karma – Stuck making a daily commute, but still want to turn heads? How about the car owned by Justin Bieber, Will Smith and many more celebrities. As a “plug-in hybrid luxury sports sedan,” the Karma gives you class, speed, economy and it’s environmental. If you can afford the $50,000-100,000 upfront costs, the Karma is the commuter you’ve been looking for.

Look at how excited & happy little Lulu looks! Don’t you just want to adopt her right now?

This little 3-year old is looking for a hound-experienced family. She’s 45 pounds and enjoys exercising outdoors. She got her name from her distinctive baying call.

She responds great to positive reinforcement training and has a solid sit, down and shake. After exercise she’s happy to curl up on her dog bed (or a lap if you let her). Being a hound she shouldn’t be left unattended outside but is happy to be crated or left loose in the house when left alone.

She is currently located in Buckley, WA, making her accessible to someone in the Pacific Northwest, but even if you aren’t local, you can often contact a rescue organization and they will help you find assistance for long-distance transportation.

(Photo: Jim Nix/Nomadic Pursuits/Foter.com)

Have you ever been watching Auction Hunters, Storage Wars, American Pickers, Storage Hunters, Pawn Stars or one of the other “collector” shows and thought, “Hmmmm…I could do that!”

Finding valuable and/or rare objects whether in a storage auction, yard sale, someone’s attic or in a pyramid burial vault can be a difficult task. It not only requires luck…it takes a lot of knowledge and an eye for detail.

Can you spot the differences in an 18th century hard-carved chair and an early 20th century reproduction? Is the maker’s mark on your antique china above or below the glaze? What color is the mark?

Which are older — Hot Wheels manufactured in Hong Kong or Malaysia? What does tarnish on silverware reveal?

To find the gems, you have to know your stuff. But you don’t have to rummage through a West Virginia barn that is covered by nefarious creatures of the night to potentially find a great item.

You can make some great discoveries through classified listings. The dynamics change as you won’t be the only one that has a chance to look the listing over (like you would in that damp, dark West Virginian barn) and you won’t necessarily get to handle the item and look for specific details. (Though you can ask the seller to send you some extra pictures or more specific photos to highlight certain areas.

But if you know what things to look for, classifieds are a great place to find some bargain collectibles. If you are looking for particular items, you can use recycler.com’s “Save My Search” feature.

This will save you time as you can quickly pull up a previous search that you have saved. Instead of being forced to re-search and refine your search all over again, you can pull up your Saved Search by going into your recycler.com account and clicking on the “My Saved Searches” in the lefthand panel.

From there, you can view, edit or delete your Saved Searches so that you can quickly and easily customize your experience with recycler.

If you are a collectibles hunter, this will help expedite your search and keep you on the path tracking those rare pieces that make the hunt worth it.

A couple of great pieces of advice for those searching for rare items, especially if you are buying in order to sell for a profit: Don’t buy anything you don’t like since you might end up being forced to keep it. And never spend more money than you can afford to lose. Why’s that? You might take a risk on something and end up buying something that isn’t worth anything.

Selling something? Take a look at the upgrade packages recycler.com offers to get additional exposure and make more money quicker.

Roman philosopher Titus Maccius Plautus is credited with the translated quote, “you must spend money to make money.”

Even though Plautus is believed to have lived from 254-184 BC, one of his most famous quotes still lives true to this day. Ask any person that has started a business. You have to invest money in your trade in order for it to create returns in the long run.

The same can hold true for your classifieds listings. Whether you are selling your used car or a handcrafted maple rocking chair that you made from scratch, trying out the upgrades on recycler.com can lead to more exposure for the items you have listed and potentially lead to a smaller inventory as you sell more and more items in a quicker fashion.

Don’t be afraid to spend a couple of dollars if you really want to sell your item and get some cash. You can buy one of the deluxe packages that is offered in your area. You can also just add a couple extra photos or some more characters to describe your item better.

The most important upgrade is adding photos…a picture is worth 1000 words. While the free picture is great, a couple more will allow potential buyers know more about the item and will also give an air of credibility because people will then know you actually have the item and haven’t just copy and pasted an image from the internet.

You can try to cram the entire object into one photo, or you can focus on individual portions with multiple photos to give the buyer a better recognition of what exactly you are selling.

By purchasing upgrades, you are making the most important upgrade — upgrading your chances of the item selling and therefore, upgrading the padding in your wallet.

A great man cave addition. (Photo: mfhiatt / Foter.com)

Every man deserves his own little space that he can retire to after a long day of work and have a beverage while watching his favorite team play.

That’s what the man cave is. It’s a place where a guy can sit alone and enjoy the game or even better, can have buddies over and everyone can have a great time even as the LA Lakers get swept out of the NBA Playoffs.

Man caves can be an expensive foray that can be quite expansive rooms that double as the home theater for the whole family or they can be small rooms that are meant as a home away from home within your own home.

While you could spend thousands and thousands of dollars on your man cave (and we encourage you to as long as you’re going to invite us over to watch the big games!), we’ve got a list of the essentials that every man cave MUST HAVE:

1. Television(s) - The focus of the man cave is watching your favorite team and all the big games. A man cave without a quality TV or projection unit is no man cave at all. The bare bones man cave requires a nice flat screen. The ridiculous, out-of-control, can-we-just-live-here-instead man cave will have TV screens seemingly everywhere. There has to be at least four large televisions in the center of the room for viewing multiple games at once. TVs at the bar or dropping down from the ceiling in other areas of the man cave are swell ideas as well.

2. Comfortable Seating - It starts with a nice, comfy couch. Seating for multiple people that you can also use for napping when you are alone watching a NASCAR race or if a baseball game goes 18 innings. Other potential seating: bar stools, Laz-E-Boy recliner, massage chairs, beanbag chairs, gaming rocker seats, skybox seating (elevated seating, often chairs on top of tables behind couches).

3. Door - Most people might overlook this, but having a physical barrier between the man cave and the outside is essential. You don’t need the dog, children or significant other coming in and interrupting in the final 10 seconds of a game. Want to get creative? Go with a hidden bookcase door. It’ll be awesome. Your wife’s friends will hear screams coming from the walls. They’ll think the house is haunted and never want to come back.

4. Refrigerator - No one wants to be thirsty while watching the game. And preparing a cooler for each game will get old fast. Instead, you need a fridge, even if its just a mini fridge (stalk out the local college on move out day and you may end up with a free one). You can store and cool your beverage of choice at the same time. On the high end, we would prefer a full bar area so that we can drown our sorrows quickly when our squad gets eliminated in the playoffs because someone drops an easy catch. A Kegerator, WunderBar or On-Ice Beer Dispenser would all be great additions as well.

5. Entertainment – There isn’t always something on TV. Your friends are still going to want to come hang out in your badass man cave. When you get back home from the bar and your friends want to keep the party going, having entertainment will keep everyone happy. Billiards, foosball, ping pong, pop-a-shot basketball, putting green, arcade games, pinball or even a shiny pole securely fastened to the floor and ceiling. There are several options. What entertainment you choose will likely be determined by how much space, time and money you have.

6. Restroom - Having a restroom may not seem like a big deal, but it REALLY is. You know what you don’t want to do? Miss any of the game because you have to go through the rest of the house to use the restroom. Then you get caught up in a conversation about how you need to clean out the gutters and end up missing the big touchdown pass. This isn’t the master bathroom. You don’t need to have a whirlpool tub or a waterfall shower head. You don’t need a fancy sink or anything like that. In fact, unless you have a group of female fans you plan on being regulars, I propose just installing a urinal. Every man prefers using a urinal and this will keep someone from potentially stinking up the entire man cave.

7. Gaming – Xbox? Wii? PS3? PS4? It doesn’t matter what your system of choice is. Gaming is pretty much a requirement for a man cave. Use one of the four main screens and get the competition going. You only need like three or four games every year with Madden and some type of first-person shooter as requirements.

8. Decor – The thing that separates a man cave from a family play room is the decor. Sports paraphernalia is a must. Framed jerseys or classic images of iconic moments. If you can afford stadium seats that came out of Old Yankee Stadium or Veterans Memorial Stadium, go for it. Neon signs, funny posters, Fatheads, etc. are all acceptable as well.

Sila is an adult cat that has been living in a cage for quite some time since she is a little bit of a scaredy cat around bigger cats in her foster home.

She is small. She only weighs about 6 pounds. Sila is a gentle girl that doesn’t match well with larger, rambunctious cats that like to rough-house a little bit.

Instead, Sila prefers to be a nurturer. She is very fond of kittens and her foster home often gives her a cage mate. Sila would probably work great with a younger kitten or another smaller adult cat.

What she really wants is a permanent home. She is currently located in New York City, making her accessible to someone throughout the Northeast, but even if you aren’t local, you can often contact a rescue organization and they will help you find assistance for long-distance transportation.

Getting a new car is an outrageously awesome feeling whether it’s a brand new car straight of the lot or a used car that is going to be new to you. But just because you get a new car doesn’t mean you have to be satisfied with it!

Sure…sure…be happy that you are getting a new car. Don’t be ungrateful, but then again don’t just settle on the car as is. Take the time to look the car over and decide what small touches you can make to turn that “nice” or “cool” ride into something “awesome” that will be the envy of all your friends and everyone in the neighborhood.

One thing you can do is look for aftermarket parts. Aftermarket parts are simply any parts not made by the car manufacturer and they can be a great choice if you are trying to repair your car after it is no longer under warranty because aftermarket parts are often cheaper than Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts.

However, we’re not referring to picking a new air filter. We really want to soup that new car up. Instead, take a look at something like this recent listing for aftermarket turbochargers:

Those are the type of aftermarket parts we are talking about! Stuff to turn that new car you’re getting into ‘King of the Road’ status. Whether it be purely for appearance, like rims or tinting, or aftermarket performance parts, recycler.com can help you out.

Most people only think about auto parts after something goes wrong, but you should be thinking about adding some aftermarket parts immediately. Make a great impression on that cute guy or girl that lives down the street when they see your new ride. Turn their head when you drive by rather than making them laugh.

Why use recycler.com? Because it takes money to make things beautiful, even your new car. Though aftermarket parts are cheaper than OEM parts, any type of auto parts can quickly run you into some serious debt. With recycler.com, you have the chance to find that perfect part and at the perfect price.

Like any classifieds site, the content is constantly changing, so if you see something that would be perfect for the new ride, go for it. Don’t let it slip through your fingers. However, if you don’t see what you are searching for, don’t get discouraged.

With the constant change of classifieds comes opportunity. What you are looking for might not be there today, but could be available tomorrow. It’s always good to give a cursory glance just to check out what’s newly listed and see if anything new catches your eyes.

If your marketplace is cluttered with businesses similar to your small business, what are you going to do? How are you going to stand out amongst the masses?

Getting in front of and into the conscious thought of local customers is a chore every small business owner has to deal with. This issue becomes more and more pressing the larger the city is where the business is located.

It’s not going to be hard for a Mongolian barbecue restaurant to stand out in an elevator-less town, but for a doughnut shop to break out in the over-saturated Los Angeles market, it is going to take some serious help (unless you have a giant donut on top of your building).

If you are a small business owner, you should check out the Local Search service provided by our mother company, Target Media Partners. Our large Local Search network gets your business in front of millions of local shoppers.

With our easy-to-use interface, you can quickly update your business profile on a number of local business sites, including YP.com, Yahoo!Local, Bing, Google Places, CitySearch and Fourquare.

We also optimize your business for mobile users — something becoming more and more important as it was recently revealed that “61 percent of smartphone users search for local info on-the-go with their devices.”

If you are looking to make your small business stand out, our Local Search service is for you.

Your home office should be a place that is free of distractions and allows you to pound out work quickly, so that you can get back to your normal home life of playing with the dog and watching Game of Thrones, Suits, Top Chef and all of your other favorite TV shows.

But what should be in your home office to make sure you are comfortable and can be super productive? Home offices can be as varied as wardrobe choices — an important part to your home office, which we’ll get to later. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t common items that every home office needs.

Here’s 10 items that you need to create the perfect home office (and let us go ahead and state just how important #1 & #2 are!!):

1. Right-Size Desk - The first thing you need is an actual desk. This could be as simple as a 2×2 wood tabletop or as elaborate as the Member’s Only desk below. I like a desk that is deep enough that I can put a laptop or keyboard on and still be able to set about half my forearm on the flattop area.

Desks can take many forms, including the elaborate.

It’s all about comfortability when it comes to the first two items. For the desk, get something that provides as much surface space as you need to feel comfortable and then look for something that will provide shelves or drawers for storage areas. If you have the right size desk, but are unable to do your work because of an abundance of clutter that has taken over your common work area, you aren’t doing things right…you either need a cleaning lady or a desk that provides you with adequate storage space.

2. Comfortable Ergonomic Chair – There’s nothing that will kill your productivity quicker than an uncomfortable chair. You’ll either be shifting around all the time or have to keep changing seats. You could also do some serious damage to your body (all those uncomfortable hours can take a major toll on your spinal cord and back muscles creating unneeded tension, calcium deposits, etc. that won’t have you being productive) if you don’t get a comfy, ergonomic chair.

Your chair needs to work well with your desk. Make sure it’s not too short or too tall because either will cause you pain over the long run. You’re going to be sitting in this chair for hours upon hours in the long run, if you have to spend some extra money to assure that you are comfortable, DO IT! Think about how far that extra $25 or $50 is going to take you when you are in the zone knocking out work quickly and then being able to spend half the day at the beach rather than squirming in your chair wondering if you should try to gain an extra 30 or 40 pounds to give you more cushion while sitting in the chair.

Go with the MacBook.

3. Laptop - Who wants a large box desktop PC that’s going to take up half the space on your desk and ruin your feng-shui with all of the cords creating an entangled web behind your desk. Grab a lightweight laptop that will give you flexibility to throw your feet up and still get work done…that’s what the home office is all about anyway.

4. External Hard Drive - Backup…backup…backup! It can’t be stressed enough. If you are trying to create a home office to be destroyed, don’t back up. Because you’ll go all Bruce Banner on your office, sending papers flying and turning pens and paper clips into projectile weapons if your computer crashes and you lose everything. And just think how your clients will feel if you lose all of their data/work? BACKUP!

5. All-in-One Office Equipment - Formerly, having a fax machine, scanner, copier and printer in a home office would not only be a pricey investment but also would swallow a ton of your office space and create a plethora of cords that all had to be tracked back to your computer. Now you can have all four of those business-heavy pieces of hardware in one device and you can even get it wireless!

Extra screen space can add to productivity.

6. Flatscreen Monitor - Even if you have a nice laptop, having an extra large flatscreen monitor is great to reduce the strain on your eyes and give you more visual space to do your work. Having an extra screen is awesome when you need to do comparative analysis or if you just want to pull up the game on ESPN3.com and put it on a separate screen while you are finishing up stuff late in the evening.

7. Wireless Headset - Depending on what type of business you will be running from home, you may be on the phone all the time or just occasionally. It doesn’t matter, you are going to want a wireless headset. Whether they are business-related or not, you are going to receive phone calls. A wireless headset will allow you to keep pulling up data while you take that call from the Grandma, the dry cleaners or that potential six-figure client.

8. Wireless Mouse - There’s not much that aggravates me more than when the mouse cord gets tangled and doesn’t go where I want it to or when I’m using the touchpad on my laptop and my fingers don’t slide smoothly because I rubbed my face and now have a little bit of oil on my fingertips. Go with the wireless mouse instead…get one that will turn itself off after a brief period of inactivity or one that you can recharge on a daily basis, so you don’t have to worry about having to change any batteries.

9. Coffeemaker/5-Hour Energy Stash - Whether its when you first wake up or when you start to wane in the afternoon, there are times when you need some something to get you going. The danger of the home office is that you are so close to your own comfy couch or bed. All you have to do is wander over to the other room. You tell yourself it’ll just be a 20-minute nap and then suddenly you wake up and it’s no longer daylight anymore. Instead of thinking a power nap is the way to go and ending up ruining your sleep pattern, it’s important to have something that will give you a boost. For some people, that is some fresh-brewed coffee. For me, it’s a stash of 5-hour energy and energy drinks that I always stock up on when I see them on sale for cheap.

10. Proper attire - Athletes often say, “look good, feel good, play good.” That saying translates to the home office as well. Instead of rolling out of bed and dragging your feet through your house as you begrudgingly sit down in your home office, wake up and go through a full normal workday routine to get yourself going. Shower, shave, breakfast, makeup, professional attire…the whole ordeal. Do whatever you would do if you were commuting to work. This gets your mind and body prepared to have a productive workday. You’ll feel better about yourself and get more work done. It will keep you in a routine in case you ever have meetings outside your home. Plus, you’ll already be ready for any Skype meeting or other videoconferencing.
