The Churning of the New

A lot of stuff is going on. Walk4Water Tacoma just completed to great success, raising an estimated $4000 for wells, and having the most walkers of any satellite Walk4Water event. We are proud of the Tacoma group, and proud to have been able to help out.

Unfortunately, some pretty severe medical emergencies kept us from completing our West Coast tour. We had planned stops through California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and other places. We were sad about missing all of you. I hope that we will be able to arrange something even bigger and better soon.

This week, we are heading to Little Rock for the Transmillennial Conference, and will be playing all weekend. Last year, it was at a castle, and we had to back our trailer down an almost-abandoned fire road. This year, I imagine the roads will be smoother. But there is no telling what kind of adventures we might get into.

And, just to warn you. We might be a little quiet for the next little while. We are working on something amazing. Something so amazing, we may not be able to handle it. Something that is taking all of our energy and creativity and strength. Something that may cause us to collapse under the sheer massive-ness of it.

When we are done, you will know what we mean. (Or we will be massive failures). Either way, it's not fair to you to devote anything less than our full attention to it. So that's what we will be doing.

And, we would love to hear any words of encouragement or inspiration you have to offer. Just email us, and let us know what is wonderful in your world.

How to have a memorable Tuesday, stop time, and invade a homeless guy's personal space

Time flies.

As you get older, time seems to go by faster and faster. The reason is simple: When you're young, everything is a fresh new adventure you're just stepping into. But the older you are, the less there is in the world and in your life that is really new.

As the new slowly fades from your life, you fall into routines, and so time slips by amazing quickly.

The only way to stop this is to add newness to your life, by doing things you would never normally do. How?

If you're me, this is how:

I was returning a movie to McDonalds when I became caught up in the outdoors. The air was great, and I wanted to experience it. So instead of driving home, I headed towards the lake. But then I changed my mind. And as I turned around I saw a nice little convenience store that looked like it might host a few murderings and hold-ups every week. Normally, I would have just kept going. But today, I was following life where it wanted to take me.

I turned around in someone's driveway, and headed into the store to pick up a 16oz bottle of Coke (I would normally do 20oz) and some dried plantain chips (I would normally get banana chips). Although this store seemed like it might host its fair share of near-death encounters, something about it was ALIVE. More importantly, something about it was new.

I sat in the parking lot for a few minutes, enjoying the sun, and then impulsively headed towards the library. I was following the road where it would lead.

In the library parking lot, I got out and looked around. I didn't really want to go inside, but I was here to experience something. Suddenly, a narrow trail leading into the woods caught my eye.

Now, if you're me, you spent your childhood reading books about imaginative adventures that happen when children take off down hidden and mysterious trails. And you know that if you are too afraid to follow the trail where it will lead, you'll miss out on an ancient treasure or mystery just waiting to unveil itself. In fact, just seeing a trail is enough to magically obligate you to take it. If you're not me, you probably find this line of thought weird and disorienting. But since I AM me, I naturally took the trail.

There I was, winding my way through bushes and small evergreens, under branches, imagining myself to be taking the red pill and heading into Alice's dream. What wonderland or adventure might lie at the end of this trail?

Maybe I would stumble upon a secret civilization, or a million dollars stashed away. Maybe I would uncover an alien landing site, or fall down a hole into an alternate universe.

Instead, I stumbled upon a homeless guy. Or rather, his...uh...house. Everything was well outfitted, from the nice clothesline, to the mattress he was sleeping on. Boxes were stacked everywhere. Perhaps he still hadn't gotten around to unpacking.

And he was fast asleep on the mattress, wearing sunglasses, and looking quite a bit like Bono.

I stood there a while, walking around, wondering if he would wake up. He was apparently quite at peace with his environment. As...um..."houses" for homeless people go, this guy was living in a mansion.

So I let him sleep, and headed back towards the library, with my memorable day stuck firmly in my pocket.

And that's how I do it.

It is finished!

My challenge to write, record, and release 14 songs in 28 days is complete!

It was a tough job, and we skated through with minutes to spare, but we did it. As usual, I procrastinated, leaving almost 9 songs to write in the last week. But we got it done.

This was one of my most ambitious resolutions from our group challenge: The Resolution Begins. Go there now, and add your own ambitious resolution.

And go listen to the 14 songs, read weird comments about them, and leave your own!

14 Songs in 28 Days

The Resolution Begins is our effort to compile and achieve the greatest resolutions of all time. It started on New Year's Eve with a small group of resolutions written down on a sheet of notebook paper. It has now morphed into a blog with hundreds of resolutions added to daily by people from around the world.

As one of my ridiculously ambitious resolutions, I decided to attempt to write and record 14 songs in 28 days. Specifically, I am trying to write and record 14 songs in the 28 days of February.

I just posted demos of the first two songs I wrote and recorded this month. Listen to them here, and let me know what you think:

The Last of it’s Kind

Rome’s Last Day

Better yet, subscribe to the Resolution podcast, so you’ll see as soon as I post new ones:

in iTunes

in another player

Attempting to write and record 14 songs in 28 days is a big task - a task so big, it could almost make you freeze up. But The Resolution is all about finding ways to make your creativity work, even when it doesn’t want to.

When I started writing these songs, I struggled. The song I started with morphed into another song, which morphed into a third, and before long, the whole day was gone, and I only had pieces to show for it. I was being stymied by my own creative vision. I have the feeling that this is going to be my biggest struggle this month: to know when to let things go, instead of staying stuck in a perpetual attempt to make them perfect.

And so I’m going to stop trying to make this post perfect, stop trying to find the perfect way to explain and detangle the creative process, and just go ahead and post what I’ve got. And ask you to tell me what you think.

-micah
