Typically, I cover cases from Arizona, but for the next 37 write ups, I will be covering one case from each state in alphabetical order. Today will be a case from Indiana.

In April of 1986, nineteen year old Indiana resident Trisha Meredith had her whole future in front of her, and that future looked quite promising. Having graduated from Ben Davis High School, Trisha was stepping foot into the working world by working at a local grocery store, where she met the man she would consider the love of her life, 21 year old David Fain. After a year of being together, the pair had wanted to marry, but knowing what a big commitment marriage was, the couple instead took baby steps: first, they were going to move in together. So, Trisha packed up her belongings from her childhood home, and did just that: they rented an apartment at Springhill Apartments on the 4500 block of Glen Arm Drive, and began their new lives, together. Trisha was understandably nervous, but so excited about taking this next step towards her future with David. However, it was stated that despite her excitement, Trisha would routinely call her mom and tell her that she was unsettled living near people she didn’t know. Her mother would calm her down, saying that’s just part of life once you move out on your own, and you’ll settle in soon.

On April 7, 1986, one week into living at their new home, Trisha and David were still unpacking their belongings and settling in. The couple had spent the day opening boxes and arranging their personal items, when evening rolled around. Around 6pm, the pair decided it was time to do some laundry, and gathered up their dirty clothing and carried it to the community laundry room southeast of their apartment, located on resident grounds. It was still light out, and would continue to be for about another hour. David helped Trisha load and start the laundry, and she agreed to sit with it and transfer it to the dryer once it stopped cycling, while David returned home to make a call to his grandmother, leaving around 6:15. The apartment was a mere 250 yards from the laundry room.

David chatted on the phone, catching up with his relative and doing some things on his “honey do-list,” and finished about 30 to 45 minutes later. Realizing that Trisha may need some help with carrying the laundry home, he returned back to the laundry room only to find it empty. He immediately knew something was off when he spotted blood all over the laundry room’s white linoleum floors, and panicked, he followed the blood droplets to a small utility closet, opening it. Horrifyingly, he found his girlfriend lying within the closet, a large pool of blood growing beneath her body. He immediately ran back to his apartment and called the police.

Officer Bill Reardon heard the dispatch call in his squad car, and was only a mile away, so he rushed to the apartment complex. When he got to the scene approximately 45 seconds after hearing the call, David ran to him, blood covering his hands. Upon entering the brightly lit laundry room and approaching Trisha’s body, Reardon knew immediately that she was already dead. Despite this, Reardon called emergency services, and began to survey the scene. Reardon was able to determine that during the attack, after attempting to fight off the killer and failing to do so, Trisha attempted to squeeze herself between two washing machines in an attempt to protect herself. During her autopsy it was determined that Trisha had been stabbed 24 times, and also had her throat and stomach slit. There was no sexual assault evident, but authorities believe this was the intention of the killer, due to the state of her clothing. With the clothing being in the dryer and no longer in the washer, it was believed that the crime happened at least 25 minutes into Trisha being inside the laundry room.

Officers quickly cleared David of any involvement in the crime, as he had passed a polygraph test and phone records proved the legitimacy of his phone call to his relative during the time of the attack. Despite having blood on his hands, it was concluded that David had attempted to pull Trisha from the utility closet, bloodying himself. David also gave permission for the investigators to search his apartment, which turned up nothing. Speaking to nearby residents, it was stated that many people heard screams around the time of the murder, but there were varying times. Some neighbors stated they heard screams around 6:20, others at 6:40. A handful of golfers that were nearby hitting balls claimed they heard a long, drawn out, terrified sounding scream around 6:30, to which they joked with one another that “someone must be getting killed.” They claim the scream lasted about 10 seconds.

In the weeks proceeding the murder, numerous women around the apartment complex began receiving disturbing phone calls. The caller would state to the women that he would do the same to them as what happened to Trisha, and some of the women claimed that the caller explicitly said that they would also be raped. After approximately 14 calls, it was determined that whoever was making the phone calls were only playing a cruel “joke,” and chalked the calls up to being a hoax. This anonymous caller had called women between the ages of 21 to 54, but they eventually let up, and the calls ended.

The investigation led to a total of five suspects, with two whom they felt very confident about. One was a man who had been working on his car outside that day, near the laundry room. This man was said to have stood on his balcony while the scene and investigation unfolded, taking a very unusual interest in what was happening below him. Enough so that it stood out to officers, beyond typical rubbernecking. His DNA was found in the laundry room, but this was easily explained away by the fact that he had lived there, and had often used that laundry room to launder his own clothes. While having confidence this man may have been involved, this lead went no where as they did not have enough evidence to back it up.

Another promising lead led authorities to another man named William Radacker who lived in the apartment complex, and who had seemingly inserted himself into the investigation. On the first day of the investigation at the laundry room, Radacker had approached Reardon and told him that he was welcome to use his phone if he needed to contact other officers. Reardon took him up on the offer, and used the phone to call and discuss the scene with his partner. Later, officers were contacted by this man’s place of employment, claiming that they had heard Radacker speaking about Trisha’s murder, stating that he was responsible, and that he was acting in a very aggressive manner towards other employees. Armed with a search warrant, officers searched Radacker’s apartment, and it was discovered that the man had rigged a recording device to his phone, and he had secretly recorded the calls between Reardon and his partner on the first day of the investigation. Officer’s had also confiscated a hunting knife along with a tennis shoe and a rubber glove for testing. Radacker initially stated that he would submit to a polygraph test, but later changed his mind and hired an attorney. His DNA was also found in the laundry room, but once again, this was explained away by the fact that he lived in the complex, and often used the laundry room.

Despite feeling confident in their two main suspects, Trisha’s case has never been solved. It was said by authorizes that someone out there must know something about the crime, as it was daylight out when it occurred and the man leaving the laundry room had to have been covered in blood. They also believe that the killer would have bragged about his crimes to someone else, and hoped that whoever heard anything about Trisha’s death would eventually call them, even anonymously, to share this information.

When Trisha’s mother passed, Trisha’s older sister stepped up and continued in her mother’s mission of getting the word out about her sister’s senseless murder. Trisha’s younger brother, Brandon, who was 12 at the time of the murder, claimed that he had made it his life mission to find his sister’s killer, and had worked tirelessly in keeping her name alive and searching for answers. Sadly, Brandon would pass away at the young age of 38, from heart failure, never having discovered who had stolen his older sister away from him. Brandon’s sister would say that Brandon never left that laundry room, emotionally. As for David, he states that he is still incredibly broken up about the murder of his girlfriend nearly forty years later, and that the memory of it is very difficult for him to linger on too long. Sadly, Trisha has never received justice for her murder, but her remaining loved ones hold out hope that there may be answers one day.
