Hi, r/Quake. My name is David L. Craddock, and I'm the author of Rocket Jump: Quake and the Golden Age of First-Person Shooters. The book is a spiritual successor of sorts to David Kushner's excellent Masters of Doom.

To write Rocket Jump, I conducted firsthand interviews with developers from across the Quake franchise including John Carmack, John Romero, American McGee, Adrian Carmack, Sandy Petersen, Tim Willits, Jennell Jaquays, Graeme Devine, and many more. The 1990s was my favorite decade for first-person shooters, so I expanded the book to write about the making of other foundational FPS games, including those inspired by Doom and Quake. Other games you'll read about include Half-Life, Team Fortress, Duke Nukem 3D, and Star Wars: Dark Forces-all written based on firsthand interviews.

If you're interested in reading Rocket Jump in hardcover, I just partnered with crowdfunding platform/publisher Unbound to fund hardcover and digital editions: You can check that out here. Rocket Jump will launch in those formats next spring/summer. John Romero's excited about it! He tweeted out his support yesterday. Rocket Jump was published on Shacknews.com in December. The first two chapters are free; the rest of the book is exclusive to subscribers of Mercury, our premium service.

I learned a great deal about id Software's culture and development processes while researching and writing Rocket Jump. If you've got questions, I most likely have answers! We can talk about Quake, other id games, your favorite shooters from the '90s and today, writing-anything that comes to mind.

Hey fam, today i came back from vacations to my house, it was a good time indeed, but when i came back to my home i found that somebody stole a bunch of things, two tvs, my turntables, my Traktor Kontrol S2 system, and what it hurts the most, all my CD and Vinyl collection... I lost 10 years of my life in there, it was a huge collection of records, i lost my Anjunabeats collection... i'm broken, they took 10 years of my life history, i don't know what to do, those records are my life... i need your help to feel better, i lost the A&B discography, i lost a bunch of A&B vinyls... they took my life and job with them...
