Kicking off the 2026 Grand Chess Tour for its eleventh consecutive year will be the Super Rapid & Blitz Poland. Located in the heart of Warsaw, the Super Rapid and Blitz Poland is the first of three speed-chess events each with a $200,000 total prize fund. The event starts with nine rounds of rapid action, followed by eighteen rounds of blitz, for a total of 135 games spread across seven days, from May 5-9. The event will feature five tour players along with five wildcards.

Is it possible to buy a FIDE title?

I was just reading up on some chess drama when I found this post accusing Nemo of "buying her FIDE title," essentially saying that it's proven. Later in this thread, they clarified:

Oh I'm not saying that she did it alone, her parents were likely involved. As for the simplest explanation being correct, yeah, in this case the simplest explanation is that her opponents lost to her on purpose. You don't just randomly score 30% against 2000s and 2100s but score 80% against 2300+, and you also don't beat tons of titled players in a few consecutive tournaments and then never beat anyone higher than 2250s in your life again.

IMO it's not even a question whether her title was bought, but rather a question of who was the mastermind behind it all. Did she make the deals herself, together with her parents, or did her parents do it without her knowledge? Most likely the second option, I find it hard to believe that at 16 she could have those tournaments and not think anything of it, if she plays at a level where she mostly loses to 2000s but suddenly beats 2300+ players while doing the same thing, massive alarm bells should go off. If she was aged like 12, I would believe it since young kids may not understand their own level of play properly or look at things objectively, but at 16 you know better. If your parents take you to 3 tournaments in Eastern Europe where you earn your norms consecutively and then when you go back you still struggle against 2000s, you would understand that something is not right.

They seem so confident that this is common knowledge that everyone knows that it got me thinking: is this even possible? Can I go out and just buy this title for myself and be a chess grandmaster? If not, how was Nemo able to do this?

Of course, I am not accusing anyone of cheating... I'm only questioning the credibility of this particular accusation, because this seems so extraordinary to me! Is such a thing even possible? Has this sort of thing definitively happened before? Thank you!

Who do you think will win each tourney?

For GCT Romania. It is hard to determine. As GCT Poland Rapid/Blitz is still in the blitz/final stages. So, it might affect their performance in the next GCT tour tournament. Fabi should still be the favorite in classical. And maybe Sindarov too. Though, they kinda struggling in GCT Poland right now.

For Norway, I think Magnus will win it again in his hometown.

As for Uzchess Cup. Defending Champion Pragg is not here. Hmmm, I think I will go with Nodirbek or Sindarov.

PS: Chennai Grandmasters will be next after UzChess but lineup not yet announced/confirmed.

IM Faustino Oro is once again fighting for his final GM norm

With 4.5/6 he is half a point behind the leaders of the Sardinia World Chess Festival with three rounds remaining. More importantly, he is currently sitting on a 2609 performance rating, a razor thin margin above the required 2600.

Next round, he faces GM Leon Luke Mendonca with the white pieces. This will be his 3rd GM opponent, clearing the way for all norm requirements. He will need at least a draw to maintain a >2600 performance rating heading into round 8.

I'm 2000 FIDE and I just realized I've been wasting hours on the wrong kind of study for the last 3 years

So I had a moment last weekend that I want to share because I think a lot of you are doing what I was doing. Background: 2000 FIDE, club player for 12 years, plateau at this level for the last 3. I've done the things. I've worked through Yusupov volumes 1-3. I've read Aagaard. I've got Chess Structures by Flores Rios on my shelf and I've actually read it twice. I do tactics on Chessable, I have my opening repertoire, I analyze my games with the engine. Standard improvement diet for someone in my range. I'm not getting any better and I haven't been for a while.

Last weekend I went back through my last OTB tournaments games and I did something I've never done. Instead of looking at the moves, I looked at the clock. When did I burn time, and why ?

Here's what I found.

In ~70% of my losses, I had spent less than 4 minutes on the move that lost the game. Not in time trouble, this was move 18 to 25 with 45+ minutes still on the clock. I had time. I just didn't use it.

Meanwhile I had spent 15-20 minutes on opening moves where I knew the theory, just second-guessing myself. I was burning my mental energy on positions where the right move was already in my preparation, and then playing the critical middlegame moves on autopilot because I was tired.

I went back further, looked at games where I beat 2200+ players. Different pattern entirely. On those games I had spent 12-18 minutes on 2-3 critical moments, and played the rest reasonably fast. The energy was concentrated where it mattered.

The actual skill I was missing wasn't calculation, evaluation, opening prep, or any of the things I'd been studying. It was knowing which positions deserve thinking and which don't.

This sounds obvious when written out. It wasn't obvious to me for 12 years.

I started practicing it explicitly. In analysis, before looking at the engine, I now ask "where were the 2-3 critical moments in this game ?" then I check if I actually spent my time there. About half the time I didn't. The training is to recognize, in real time during the game, "this is one of those moments, slow down."

Three weeks in, I won a tournament I had no business winning. Sample size of one, who knows. But the felt experience is completely different. I'm playing with more energy on critical moves and less anxiety on the rest. The point isn't that this is some secret nobody knows. Capablanca said it, Karpov said it, Dvoretsky has whole chapters on critical moments. The point is that knowing the principle and actually applying it in your own games are completely separate skills, and I had spent zero time on the second one despite hundreds of hours on study material that assumes you already have it.

If you're stuck in the 1900-2100 range and you've done the standard improvement program, I'd genuinely suggest doing the clock-time analysis on your last 30 games before buying another book. Took me 3 hours. Changed how I think about my own play.

Curious if anyone here has done similar self-analysis and what they found. Particularly interested in players around my level who broke through to 2200+, what was the actual unlock for you ?

Yagiz finished the Tepe Sigeman with 4/7 and TPR of 2757

Yagiz just proved that he can go neck and neck against top players.

He won against lower rated players like Zhu Jiner and Grandelius.

He drew against higher rated opponents like Arjun, Nodirbek, and Jorden.

And only lost one game against arguably the chess GOAT Magnus Carlsen. And it was a very tough game. They were equal until the end where Yagiz blundered in a drawn endgame due to time trouble.

I will not be surprise if YKE will be in 2028 Candidates regardless if he will only be 16-17 yrs old.

17 yrs old Uzbek IM Suyarov just upset GM Dardha. He will face against Nepo next!

I am not sure if we can still call him IM. He (and his fellow Uzbek IM Begmuratov) just submitted his GM title application. And the approval is likely to be applied next month.

But he is having a great tournament so far. He has a TPR of 2736 after 6 rounds. Highlighted by his upset win against 2600+ Elo rated GM Dardha.

IM Suyarov will face GM Nepo next.

PS: The event is Sardinia Chess Festival. Yes, same tournament where IM Faustino Oro is fighting for a GM norm currently.

It's just one of those days.

I was playing as White and taking the attack to Black's fortress. Black is trying to fight back and blocked off my Bishop from the Checkmate threat.

Here, I manifested my inner Tal and played a crushing move. Find it. White to play and win with style. In fact, it's the top move recommend by the engine.

If you want a hint, Mikhail Tal once allegedly said: "If one of your pieces is hanging, offer a second one. After all when it's their turn, they can only take one of them." I'm paraphrasing, but you get the idea.
