Heath Fair - Next Saturday, June 15th: Our church will be hosting a health fair with free health and legal services nextSaturday, June 15th. There are volunteer sign-ups and flyers soon at the hospitality table at church to pass out to neighbors. If you are interested in volunteering or donating items to help out with the health fair, please contact Candice Carr.
Summer Splash Housing Needed: We are looking for people to host members of the Christian Assembly team coming June 23 – 28th. They will be hosting VBS in the park, doing a complete rehaul of our tutoring space, and putting on our annual BBQ at Loren Miller Park. Church Congregational Meeting - Sunday, June 23rd: Mark your calendars for our upcoming church congregational meeting on Sunday, June 23rd at 2 pm. It will be held at the Hume/Yu/Hong home. At the meeting, we will be voting on the church budget and we will also be voting on nominees for the Leadership Team, the Mutual Ministry Committee, and the Nominating Committee.

Know Your Rights Workshop - Redeemer Community Partnership is putting on a "Know Your Rights Workshop" in partnership with CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles) this upcoming Thursday, May 23rd from 6-8pm at Adventures Ahead. It is going to be an informational workshop on understanding our rights in the US, particularly those who are immigrants to this country. We will discuss higher education options for children from immigrant families. Childcare and light snacks will be provided.
No Church Service NEXT Sunday, May 26th - Since we are having the church retreat next weekend, we will not be having a church service next Sunday.

Easter Lunch Potluck: We will be celebrating Easter together with a lunch following the Sunday service on March 31st. Please sign up for the lunch potluck on this google document, or sign up at the hospitality table at church on Sunday. Please join us for a great time of food and fellowship, even if you are unable to bring anything for the Easter lunch.
Membership Class and Baptism Sign-Ups: If you are interested in becoming a church member, or becoming baptized, there will be sign-up sheets starting this upcoming Sunday at church at the hospitality table. The classes will begin in a few weeks. For more information, you can contact Pastor Kevin or anyone on the pastoral staff. If you are interested in learning more, please sign-up so that you can explore these commitments as next steps of faith.

40 Days of Prayer and Fasting - PRAYER TIME OPPORTUNITIES: During this season of prayer and fasting, we encourage you to pray along with others in our church community. There are prayer meetings that are held weekly that you can attend. Here are the weekly prayer meeting days, times, and locations:
*Saturday Morning (Spanish led, English speakers are also welcome), 8-9 am, at the Jefferson Activity Center - 1299 Jefferson Blvd.
*Sunday Morning (English led, Spanish speakers are also welcome), 9:15-10 am (before church) at Mack Elementary School in one of the upstairs classrooms.
Reel Joy Inviting: Our annual youth group movie-making program starts Feb. 25th at 7pm. The youth will be making music videos and it's a great way for youth to try out our church youth group. Invite your 6th-12th grade neighbors and bring them! Flyers are available at the church hospitality table.
Redeemer All-Church Camp: REGISTRATION FORMS AVAILABLE - We are excited to have another church camp with all of our church community this year! It will be from May 24-26th at the retreat camp in Cedar Lake. The early bird price for adults is $130, $70 for kids (ages 3-12), and free for infants-age 2 children. You will need to turn in your registration and deposit of $20 by March 31st for the early bird price. Registration forms are now ready and available at the church hospitality table. Registration forms and the deposit money should be turned in to Christal Green.

40 Days of Prayer and Fasting - We will be starting our annual 40 days of prayer and fasting on Feb 13, and continuing through March 30. Something new that we are encouraging folks to try this year is an extended time of fasting. There will be opportunities for 2,3 and 7 days of fasting. The sign ups will be at the church hospitality for this upcoming Sunday. Please sign us as you are able. Prayer Guides are also available at the church hospitality table.

Robotics Lab Party, THIS SATURDAY, January 26, 10 AM – 2 PM, You're invited: To keep our robotics team in "shape" we will be having monthly robotics lab parties until our season starts. Our first party will be next Saturday from 10-2 at Adventures Ahead. All kids K-8th grade are welcome. Younger kids will work on a fun mini challenge using our K – 2 robot kits. Older kids will learn robot design while competing in a 1-day challenge. No previous experience necessary. Adults are invited to volunteer for the day and see if they want to be more involved with our robotics team. There will be pizza and prizes. RSVPs are helpful but not necessary to Lisa.

Special Gospel Music Sunday - We will be hosting a guest worship group this Sunday, December 2nd at church, and they will be performing gospel music. It should be a good time! This will be a good opportunity to invite neighbors and friends to church for this special worship service.
Adventures Ahead Christmas Bookstore (Updated Wishlist) - Don't forget to donate a book to the Adventures Ahead Christmas Bookstore! Check out our Amazon wishlist and be sure to submit your order by December 7th.
All-Church Christmas Dinner - Our all-church Christmas Dinner will be on Saturday, December 8th at 4 pm at the Parks' house. There will be delicious food, cookie decorating for the kids, and an opportunity to sing Christmas and worship songs! This is a fun event to invite neighbors and friends to. Book Sale at Loren Miller Park - This Sunday from 1-5 pm: On Sunday, November 11, from 1:00 - 5:00 there will be a HUGE book sale at Loren Miller Park, 2717 Halldale Ave., Los Angeles, 90018! There will be hundreds of books from every genre, including children's books from baby through teen! Children's books are $1 each, all other books are $2 for paperback or $3 for hardcover! In addition to books, we'll also have food, crafts, and "I Love West Adams" t-shirts available! Please tell your friends and neighbors about this West Adams event! 100% of the proceeds from this event will go toward City School West Adams, www.cityschoolwestadams.org (Please also see the attached flyer with this information; it might be a good resource to pass along if you are meeting with folks over this weekend for post-Harvest Carnival follow-up).

Daylight Savings Time - Set Your Clocks BACK: Daylight Savings ends on Sunday, November 4th, which means that you need to set your clocks BACK by 1 hour before going to bed on Saturday night. We will still have service at 10 am, but if you arrive at 9 am, you can enjoy the worship team as they practice or join the prayer meeting in Room 229.
Upcoming All-Church Thanksgiving Dinner - We will be having our all-church Thanksgiving Dinner this year on Saturday, November 17th, starting at 4 pm at the Hume/Yu House, 2945 Raymond Avenue. Sign ups will be available soon at church and through an online form so that you can sign-up to bring a food dish, or drinks, etc., or to help with set-up/clean-up.
Mark Your Calendars for the Church Retreat in 2013! - That's right, we have already figured out our dates for our next All-Church Retreat! The retreat will be held at the Cedar Lake Camp during the last weekend in May: May 24-26, 2013.

Road Closures this upcoming Sunday, October 28th - There will be a Half-Marathon race this Sunday that will be nearby our neighborhood. Please make sure to take note of this as you are on your way to church for Sunday morning, since some streets will be closed. The main locations that will affect us include the USC/Expo Park Area (it is closed from 6 am to 9:30 am), and Figueroa Street from Exposition Blvd. into downtown (it is closed from 6:00 am to 10:30 am). Harvest Carnival Candy - We invite you donate a bag (or two!) of candy to give away at the Harvest Carnival. Bring your bag(s) to church on Sunday and drop it off in the basket near the hospitality table.

Health Fair - TOMORROW, October 20, 10:00 am -1:00 pm: Our periodic health fair will be tomorrow at the Jefferson Christian Church at 1299 Jefferson Blvd. Please come yourself if you would like to receive free health services, and/or invite your neighbors.
Outreach/Follow-up Training - This Sunday, October 21, 8:15 am-9:45 am: Our church puts on wonderful events through the year! Many of these events give our neighbors an opportunity to express interest in God and/or church. These are the opportunities we long for with our neighbors! With the Harvest Carnival being our biggest event of the year, let’s be organized, equipped and ready to respond to their interest. Come before service this Sunday so we can prepare/train together to go out and gather folks to our Father in heaven!
Children's Church Announcement (on behalf of Christal Green) - Parents and Guardians of all children PreK-5th Grade, I just wanted to remind you that the pick-up for children's church is 12:15. It's been a blessing to have a set time for dismissal because this helps teachers and volunteers have a better idea of how much time they have for various activities with the children. So, if you can, let's please stick to the plan signing children out at 12:15. Thank you for your partnership in the spiritual formation of our children at Redeemer.
Middle School Youth Announcement - Parents and Guardians of Middle School Youth (Tweens 6th-8th grade) We have a new Sunday class just for middle schoolers. They will be meeting this Sunday, October 21 as well as November 25 and December 23. These are the scheduled dates for the rest of 2012. We'll keep you posted on the dates for 2013. Our goal is that through these classes, tweens will develop a lasting understanding of three things:
- I am created to pursue an authentic relationship with my creator.
- I belong to Jesus Christ and define who I am by what He says.
- I exist every day to demonstrate God’s love to a broken world.
Looking forward to seeing all the Middle Schoolers on Sunday.
Harvest Carnival Candy - We invite you donate a bag (or two!) of candy to give away at the Harvest Carnival. Bring your bag(s) to church on Sunday and drop it off in the basket near the ushers' table.
LAUSD Choices Program - Anna Parks shared this past Sunday at church about the LAUSD Choices Program, which allows families to fill out an application for their child to transfer to another charter or magnet school in the district, that has better test scores. Please check out this website for more information about the application: http://echoices.lausd.net/HowTo.aspx. Also, if you have any neighbors with children in elementary school, this would be a great program to inform them about. There is a Word document attached to this email which gives more specific information about the schools in our area. Please email Anna Parks if you have any other questions.

CicLAVia - Road Closures: This Sunday, October 7th, will be the upcoming CicLAVia, which is an exciting day for bicyclists since many roads will be closed and only open to non-motorized vehicles. In our area, there will be 1 road closure on Figueroa, starting from Exposition and going north into downtown. Please look at the website for more information, especially if you do not live in the nearby area so you can see the other road closures. Please plan accordingly for your travels to church for this upcoming Sunday.
Baptism Meeting - Sunday, October 14th, 8:15am-9:45am: There will be a meeting from 8:15-9:45 am at church for any who are interested in being baptized. This meeting will be led by Pastor Kevin and it will take place in 1 of the rooms on the 2nd floor. The classroom number will be listed on the bulletin board, located in the main sanctuary space.
Outreach Opportunities/Training - October 21, 8:15 am -9:45 am: Each year at the Harvest Carnival, neighbors tell us that they want to learn more about the Bible and pray. Come and join others in helping reach our neighbors with the gospel. There will be some training and prayer time. Resources will also be distributed. People will be partnered together to visit those who have indicated that they want to learn more about God. This meeting will take place next Sunday, October 14th before the church service at Mack Elementary School.
Health Fair - October 20, 10:00 am -1:00 pm: Periodically we partner with Jefferson Christian Church to put on a local health fair. It will be held at their church on Jefferson Blvd. Please invite neighbors who need health screening or care. Various services will be provided. This is also a great place to volunteer as neighbors come and can be prayed for and find supportive friendships with others. If you would like to get involved, please contact Candice Carr.

Lunch After Church Service - This Sunday, September 23: That's right, we are starting up again to have lunches once a month for the church congregation! We will be hosted this Sunday by the Wednesday night Home Fellowship group, so plan to stay after church to eat and enjoy fellowship time with one another.
Church Congregational Meeting: We are going to have a congregational meeting next Sunday, September 30th after church at the Hume/Yu house from 2-4 p.m. We will be discussing important church-wide information.
FREE Health Services September 27-30: There will be free medical, dental, and vision care at the LA Sports Arena on September 27-30. In order to receive the free services, you will need to get a wristband, which will be distributed on Monday, September 24th. Please see the attached flier for more information.

Church Congregation Meeting: We are going to have a congregational meeting on Sunday, September 30th after church at the Hume/Yu house from 2-4 p.m. We will be discussing important church-wide information.
Children's Church - New Pick-Up Time: Pastor Kevin mentioned this past week about some new procedures for Sunday's Service. One of them includes that the children's church will now be releasing the kids at 12:15. This is to allow extra (quieter) time for prayer ministry at the end of the service. This extra time after service also gives the adults a great chance to fellowship with one another! :)
Sunday Service Chair Arrangements: From now on, we will be reserving the front row for folks that are wanting to receive prayer ministry at the end of the preaching message (prayer ministry will be starting up again this Sunday, September 9th). Also, on the left side of the auditorium (the projector side), there will be spaces in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rows reserved for those in wheelchairs. If you have any questions and/or need any assistance about this, please speak to the ushers at the Hospitality table.
Ready for Light the Night 2012: Redeemer's Annual Harvest Carnival -

This is one of our biggest outreaches of the year, and a great way for you to get involved with all the fun and exciting activities that bless our families and neighbors. One of them includes that the children's church will now be releasing the kids at 12:15. This is to allow extra (quieter) time for prayer ministry at the end of the service. This extra time after service also gives the adults a great chance to fellowship with one another! :)

Back to School Sunday - August 12th

When Justice and Peace Kiss (WJPK) - Volunteers Needed! - We are looking for volunteers to help before, in-between and after the show. If you are available please sign up in the back table at church. We are also looking for people who can bring refreshments: baked goods (can be bought or made), drinks, napkins, and cups. Lastly, we are looking for a group of people who would like to sponsor and bring dinner for the youth and Streetlamp staff in-between the performances. Please see Megan Ibarra, Tony Casada, or Candice Carr if you have questions.
Volunteers Needed for Sound & Presentation Team - The worship team has need for volunteers to help with sound team and presentation team. The sound team helps to run the sound board during church which makes it possible for everyone to listen to the music and to the speakers. The presentation team helps to run the computer and project the words onto the projector screen during service. Both teams only have one or two team members currently. We are in need for 2 more people to help with sound team and 2 more people to help with presentation team. Please contact Richard Louie if you are interested in helping with either of these teams.

Church Annual Beach Trip: TOMORROW, July 21st: Plan to attend this fun trip with our church and neighbors from the community. We will depart from Loren Miller Park at 10 am, and return at 3:30 pm. Graduation Sunday - THIS Sunday, June 24th: We will be celebrating all of the students who have just finished a level of education. We will have all of the students come up to the front, share what level they are graduating from, and if it is an upper level student (high school or college), we will hear about what his/her next plans are. As a way to celebrate, we will also be hosted by the Monday North Home Fellowship Group with a lunch after service.

Turn in your Camp Registration! If you are able to, please turn in your camp registration balance to Kat Louie. This will speed up your registration process when you arrive at camp! Also, we have made decisions about scholarships; to find out how much you have been awarded and what is left to be paid, please talk to Kat Louie. Women In Leadership Seminar - This Sunday, May 27th: Come and explore this important topic for missions and church leadership. Hi, Church,

I hope you're adjusting well to the time change! Here are two reminders from Pastor Kevin and one from Rich Hume:

1. Read Genesis 38 + 39: In preparation for Sunday's sermon, please read Genesis 38 + 39. Also, a helpful passage to understand some family history is Genesis 35: 21-22; please take a moment to read that as well. Pastor Kevin will be preaching on Joseph and his interactions with Potiphar's wife.

2. Sunday School Class on Church and Missions: This Sunday School class will begin this week, March 18, at 8:15 AM. It will be meeting in Room 207 on the second floor. Do come even if you haven't signed up to attend. It should be a good time to hear some about the church, missions, and it's place in the world today. It will be led by Pastor Kevin and Jared Warner.

3. New Members Class: Do you want to make Redeemer your spiritual home? Come check out the New Members Class starts Sunday, March 18 at 9:00 AM in Room 206. Rich and Ellen Hume will be teaching the class.

We are also still taking early registration applications for the church retreat. If you haven't signed up already, do fill one out and give it to Kat Louie (that's me!) this Sunday. The discount will apply for just two more weeks. We are about halfway there to having enough people signed up so that our kids can go for half price.

Hi, Church!

After a few weeks of no announcements, we have a big one for this week! Read on!

Coming Soon: REEL Joy 2012: REEL Joy is an annual film-festival that the Youth Group (YG) puts on together with Redeemer Community Partnership (RCP) and Street Lamp Studio. This year our theme is "Belonging, Family and Home" and for the next several weeks we'll teach on this theme from scripture while leading our youth through the process of creating their own short films. It's a super fun time that ends with a film screening and "Red Carpet Sunday" service at church, and has been a major way that God has brought new kids to the Youth Group.

We're expecting 40-50 kids and need some volunteer help for the upcoming REEL Joy Monday nights! Here are some volunteer opportunities:

- Provide rides to and/or from REEL Joy on some or all REEL Joy Monday nights: 2/20, 2/27, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26
- Provide snacks - there are two dates, 2/27 and 3/12 that we'd love to have some help with snacks.
- Pray for the youth! Elliot will be sending weekly prayer updates about REEL Joy.

There will be sign ups at church on Sunday for these volunteer opportunities. As the time for the screening and Red Carpet Sunday gets closer, there will also be lots of opportunity to serve during those events as well. We will announce those when it's time.

1. Family Learning Academy: Everyone is welcome to attend Saturday's Family Learning Academy and bring a friend. This week's topic is:

12/3 - Choosing the Right Middle School: Navigating the Points System: Learn about local middle school options, how to apply for Choices, and what you can do now to ensure a great middle school match.

These free workshops are held at the Bethune Library at 3900 S. Western Ave. (at the corner of 39th St. and Western Ave.) from 10-11:30 a.m. Spanish translation and childcare are provided. Attached is the flyer if you want to invite a friend!

2. Parking for People with Disabilities

Beginning this Sunday, before and during Sunday morning services, we will be reserving the first few parking spaces on the curb directly in front of the school auditorium entrance for handicapped parking. Please use these spaces if you or someone in your vehicle has a physical disability, and also please inform any visitors that may find these spaces useful.

3. Christmas Dinner and Celebration

1. Thanksgiving Dinner Potluck: We are having our annual potluck tomorrow, Saturday, November 19 from 4-7 PM at the Hume residence. Thank you to everyone who signed up to bring food/drinks/supplies to the Thanksgiving dinner this Saturday. Looks like we'll have a fabulous spread. Thank you all for your work in putting on the Harvest Carnival, whether it was doing set-up, being in charge of a booth, inviting neighbors, or simply being welcoming! We had quite a few people sign-up for a faith follow-up visit from someone at our church! Praise God! Let's be praying that these visits will be a blessing to our neighbors!

Here are this week's announcements:

1. Finance & Housing Seminar: We are having a housing and finance seminar this coming Sunday, November 6th, right after church in the auditorium from 12:30-2 PM. This is a great event to invite your neighbors as we will be learning about different bank services and how to purchase a home. Please let me know if you plan to come and how many people you hope to bring so that we can have enough lunch and materials for everyone. If you could let me know by noon on Friday, November 4th, that would be great! You can just e-mail me at katherine@redeemerla.org.

2. Health Fair: We are co-hosting a Health Fair on Saturday, November 12 from 10 AM-1PM at the Jefferson Activity Center on the corner of Jefferson and Walton. Free services include a basic health check-up, a diabetes screening, eye exams and legal aid. There will be a group of people going out to do some door-to-door invitations this Saturday, starting at 11AM. If you're interested in joining them, please contact Sarah Stoker. We also could use a few more volunteers at the health fair. Again, contact Sarah Stoker if you're interested in volunteering -- sarahstoker@gmail.com.

3. Church Thanksgiving Dinner: Please save the date for our annual church Thanksgiving potluck. It will be on Saturday, November 19th in the evening at the Hume residence. More information and sign-ups to come.

This week's weekly announcements are coming out a little early -- read on and read carefully!

Faith Follow-up Training
Pastor Kevin is hosting two gatherings to train people in following up with those who show a faith interest from the Harvest Carnival. They will be on Sunday, Oct. 23 and Oct. 30 before church from 9-10 AM. There will be childcare provided at the Kids Fun Zone in the Nursery (or on the playground -- just look for the group of kids and adults!). If you are interested in participating in the faith follow-up but haven't signed up yet, please let me know your interest and plan to be at both gatherings since we will be covering different material at each meeting. The training will be in English and translated into Spanish -- and we will give out materials in both languages.

Harvest Carnival Work Day
We are gathering on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 10 AM at the Hume Home to prepare for the Harvest Carnival! We need plenty of hands to put up signs, move games, stack hay bales, and more! If you're available, please let Lauren know at lauren@redeemercp.org. We could really use a truck or van during this time to transport the games, so if someone has one available that they'd be willing to loan out, you can also let Lauren know!

Harvest Carnival Candy
We can still use more candy for the Harvest Carnival, so keep them coming! You can bring them to church or drop them off at Adventures Ahead with Lauren during the week!

Here are the announcements for this week:

1. Membership Class: New Church Member Class starts on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 8:30 AM at John Mack Elementary. Meet in the picnic area. Ellen and Rich Hume will be leading.

2. The Harvest Carnival: Our annual "Light the Night" Harvest Carnival is coming up on October 31! It is a street carnival that we host for our neighborhood to create a safe place for the kids and youth on Halloween night. There are many ways to get involved in this next month. If you are interested in volunteering, there will be a sign-up at church or you can e-mail Lauren at lauren@tigrett.com.

3. The Harvest Carnival Faith Interest Follow-Up: We are also looking for people to volunteer to do home visits of folks who express a faith interest at the Harvest Carnival. This is a great opportunity to meet new people in the neighborhood and to talk with them about Jesus! We need both English and Spanish speakers! Summer Splash is coming up! Christian Assembly Church in Eagle Rock and Shoreline Covenant Church from Shoreline, WA will be joining us for a week of fun, service, and outreach! Save the following dates:

I would like to have a majority (maybe all!) of the incurred expenses to generate a financial report for the next congregational meeting. You can go to the church website, log in and click on Document Center under Resources to obtain the reimbursement form. Please fill out the form, print it out, attach receipts, sign it (and get the ministry leader to sign it, if you're not the ministry leader yourself) and pass the form and receipts to me in person.

Hope you're all staying dry in this rainy weather! Below are some important announcements for you regarding our youth group needs, and the upcoming Harvest Carnival!

Harvest Carnival Fliers - Harvest Carnival Fliers will be available at church this Sunday. Please be sure to get some to give to your friends and neighbors when you invite them to the carnival. This is a great opportunity for us to meet our neighbors and talk more with them about the event, our church, and God.
Need more soda and candy! - Believe it or not, more soda and candy are needed! Please bring your donations to church this Sunday, this is the LAST Sunday. You can drop it off in a box located near the usher's table on Sunday. If you are not a regular member of a cell group, but would still like to volunteer for the Harvest Carnival or donate towards a raffle prize, contact Lauren Tigrett or see her after service on Sunday.
Rides for YG - Church of the Redeemer's youth group meets once a week on Monday nights for worship, fellowship, games and bible study from 6 - 9pm. This is our "church night" where a larger group of youth gather and we're currently in need of a few volunteers to provide rides after the meeting. Youth group generally finishes around 9 or 9:15 pm and we try our best to get the youth home by 9:30 at the latest. If you have a car and about a half hour of time to give on Monday nights, please let Pastor Elliot know - it would be super helpful. The commitment can be weekly, every other week or even once a month.
Youth Tutoring Program - As of last week we have officially begun the Church of the Redeemer youth tutoring program in partnership with Foshay Learning Center (FLC)! FLC is a K-12 LAUSD public school and is the middle school for the vast majority of students in our neighborhood. The tutoring program focuses on homework help and math enrichment and meets on Tues, Wed and Thurs from 3:30 - 5:30 pm. Come spend some time with some awesome youth and help them succeed in school! If you're interested in volunteering once, twice or three times a week, please let Pastor Elliot know.

This year's carnival will include food, jumpers, musical entertainment, carnival games, and a raffle. Housing Need - A brother in the church is in need of housing. If you have a room that he could use/share or a garage or other space that he could move into, please contact Jared Yamaguchi . He could probably afford to contribute around $200/month towards rent.

Sunday Service needs/opportunities

Dear Church,

We are blessed to have volunteers who serve on Sundays in order for Sunday service to run smoothly. After a meeting with Sunday service ministry leaders earlier this summer, some needs were presented for each department that we would like to invite you to pray and consider being a part of. Below is the list of the departments that run our Sunday service and their needs:

Youth Group: They now have 4 people including Pastor Elliot that form the youth staff team. An additional 2 staff members would be ideal - responsibilities can include attending Wed night meetings and leading small groups and providing rides; mentoring youth and teaching periodically. We would also love to have 5 more folks who can serve in a more focused role as mentors, Sunday youth church teachers, or tutors. These roles are flexible so if you're interested, please contact Pastor Elliot. Worship Team: Worship team consists of sound team, Sunday worship, translating, powerpoint presentation, and youth worship team. The powerpoint presentation team needs 2 more volunteers. The sound team also needs 2 more volunteers.
Translation Team: The translation team needs Spanish-speaking folks to help translate our services, ideally 4 volunteers total per month.
Children's Church: This group needs about 4 more volunteers per week. This would include teaching from curriculum, checking in with parents about pick up after church, and helping transport the supplies for them. They are also requesting some teachers that are Spanish speaking.
Set-up/Van: Our set-up crew drives the church van to transport, and load and unload all of our equipment and supplies. This crew needs about 1-3 more drivers, and volunteers in general to help load and unload our equipment.
Ushering/Hospitality Team: This team ideally needs 3 volunteers for every Sunday. Right now they have about 2 volunteers every Sunday, and it would be helpful to have a third person. Serving on this team would include welcoming our visitors, collecting/counting our offerings, and on a monthly basis helping to serve a light lunch to our congregation.
Nursery: The nursery volunteers take care of little ones younger than 3, from the start of church at 10 am to the end of service, including setting up and cleaning up nursery supplies. With the influx of little 4 babies who have joined nursery or are soon joining nursery, we are needing some more hands! We need 4-5 more volunteers who can serve once a month.

Please be praying for the Lord to provide for the needs of these various departments. We have some dedicated brothers and sisters serving that need more dedicated brothers and sisters to help Redeemer Sunday service run smoothly. Please pray for where God may be leading you in terms of service and involvement in the church. Welcome to summer (as of this past Monday)! Here are a couple of announcements for you all below.

From our treasurer Amy - We are fast approaching the end of June, which is also the end of the fiscal year. Please submit all of your reimbursements by the end of this month (June 30th) by either bringing it to church this Sunday and giving them to Arthur* or by bringing it to our house other days. If you decide to do the latter and put it into the mailbox or under the door, please send an email to myself and Arthur so that he can look out for it. Once the fiscal year ends, you can no longer receive reimbursements from this year's funds. *My husband Arthur has graciously agreed to be my proxy while I am in Malaysia for the next two weeks.
Benevolence Offering this Sunday - This is just a reminder that we are taking our benevolence offering this coming Sunday, June 27th.

Can't wait to see you all at The Oaks camp tomorrow! Just a couple of reminders for you all. You do not need to bring towels, pillows, or linens with you because all of that is provided for you at the camp. You can of course bring your own if you want to.

The weather report looks clear, sunny with highs in the mid 70s, and the pool will be open on Saturday! It still gets cold at night and in the mornings because it's up in the mountains, so please still bring warm clothes for the mornings and evenings.

The youth group is making Mother's Day care packages in order to fundraise for our summer youth retreat. Mothers and mother-like figures in our lives are an incredible gift from God - take this opportunity to bless mothers while supporting our youth!! Here are some more details.

If your mother lives in the neighborhood, sign up and we'll make sure she receives something special next Sunday. If your mother doesn't live in the neighborhood, you can still sign up and we will mail the care package to your mother (unfortunately, we probably won't be able to mail it until Monday 5/10).

There may also be mothers not your own and mother-figures in the neighborhood that you'd like to bless and honor. The youth group fundraiser care package is an awesome way to show your appreciation. Sign up and, again, we'll help you show your appreciation with a youth group made care package.

Dear church family,

I wanted to let you all know of an incident that occurred this past Tuesday. On Tuesday night, a friend of ours came to visit and when she was in front of our house, a Latino man asked her for the time. He then punched her in the face and tried to take her belongings. Another woman came alongside and beat her with a stick. They left in a red, 4-door car with a third person as the driver. After the police came to fill out a report, our friend was taken to the ER. She suffered swelling/bruises, 2 lacerations (6 stitches, 5 staples), and a broken nose. She is back at her home and recovering well. She is a strong woman of faith and, by the grace of God, she has been generally in good spirits since the incident. Please pray for her continued recovery and restoration physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

This disturbing incident have caused my roommates who are present and I to be more concerned about the safety around our house and generally of our neighborhood. Below are some safety guidelines that could help us as a community look out for one another.

Safety Guidelines

Do not walk in the neighborhood after dark. Limit car trips after dark whenever possible. If you must unload groceries or other items from your car after dark, ask someone to help you.
Watch guests walk to or from their cars after dark.
Avoid carrying a purse or expensive bag or using cell phones or iPod/MP3 players while walking. Suspects target purses, phones and other high value items in plain view.
Don’t wear flashy jewelry
If anyone ever asks for your wallet, remember Jesus’ admonition to “give to everyone who asks”. Also, minimize your potential losses by carrying only the cash you need and leave the rest at home.
Walk with purpose and pay attention to your surroundings. If you feel uncomfortable or see an uncomfortable situation leave that area or find an alternate route. Trust your instincts.
Avoid wearing gang colors, red or royal blue. If you see a gathering of young men wearing red or royal blue anything (hats, shoe laces, shirts, etc.), avoid the area (e.g. at Loren Miller Park). Gatherings of gang affiliated individuals may invite violence from opposing gangs.

Prayer meeting update - Sorry for the short notice but 6 am prayer meetings will resume again starting tomorrow, Tuesday as well as Thursday, at the Hume/Lee/Lai household. Friday prayer meetings which are held at the Gohs' will be cancelled for the next two weeks, and will resume again after that.
Retreat registrations - Our retreat is coming up really soon! Please register as soon as possible, if you are planning to attend. The fee for adults is $100, for children 3-12 years is $58, and children under 3 years old are free. Please write your check for the retreat to Church of the Redeemer and give them to Daniel Taylor, our retreat coordinator. Wristband Distribution is April 25 for FREE Health Services!

Anticipating a high level of demand for this year’s free clinic, Remote Area Medical® (RAM) will distribute wristbands in advance of the clinic on April 25 starting at 9 a.m. at the Los Angeles Sports Arena located at 3939 South Figueroa Street in Los Angeles. The weeklong free clinic will run from April 27 to May 3 starting at 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. People must have a wristband to be admitted to the clinic.

Volunteers and RAM staff will distribute the color-coded wristbands for each day of the clinic on a first-come, first-serve basis starting at 9am.

April 27 – May 3, 2010: Remote Area Medical (RAM) Free Medical, Dental, and Vision Care

On April 27 – May 3, 2010, Remote Area Medical (RAM) will provide free medical, dental and vision care to thousands of needy individuals in the Los Angeles area. The free clinic will be held at Los Angeles Sports Arena located at 3939 North Figueroa Street , near USC. 1,200 people a day will be treated—possibly more depending on the final number of volunteers and participating organizations. The event is planned and operated by Remote Area Medical, a Volunteer 501(c)(3) charity providing free care to uninsured, underinsured, and indigent Individuals throughout the United States . Free care will be provided to anyone who needs it, without cost of any kind to the patient, the taxpayer or the government. There is no income test, no insurance requirement, and no restriction of any kind. Medical and non-medical personnel will all be volunteers; supplies and equipment will be donated or provided by RAM. There will be at least 100 dental stations, 45 medical exam rooms, 25 eye exam stations. Dentistry will include cleanings, extractions, fillings, restorative procedures and root canals. Prescription eye glasses will be ground and fitted on-site. Minor dermatological and other medical procedures will be performed. Pediatricians and pediatric dentists will be present. Follow-up care will be arranged for those who need it, with most referrals to private sector practices and facilities.

There will be a strong emphasis on education, prevention and self-care. Mammography, pap smears, chest x-rays, and diabetes screening, blood pressure screening, and other services will be provided. Healthcare foundations and agencies will also distribute patient education materials. RAM/LA is a large undertaking, on a scale to make a significant difference in this time of great and urgent need. Success is achieved through medical and non-medical volunteers, local healthcare organizations, equipment and supply donors, and others who contribute their time, talents and resources.

Streetlamp Studio is holding auditions for the world première of “Detour”, written by the award-winning playwright Lisa Sharon Harper. Auditions will be held Saturday, April 3rd from 10 am – 1 pm in South LA. Rehearsals begin at the end of April with three weekend performances in June.

Synopsis:

Three generations of fathers and sons come together in Salinas Valley State prison at the request of convicted murderer, Grandpa Joe, who serves a life sentence without possibility of parole. Upon learning he has terminal cancer Grandpa determines to stop the cycle of dysfunction and disconnectedness that has plagued his family for generations and threatens the family's well being into the future. The three men must traverse physical and emotional barriers to find connection with each other, with themselves, with God, and ultimately with life itself.

Personal safety this Saturday, February 20th: This Saturday is an initiation day for one of the local gangs. This is the gang that hangs out locally in Loren Miller park. It is advised not to hang out outside around this area especially, for your own safety on that day.

Read Acts 10 and 11 - Similar to last Sunday, Pastor Kevin recommends to read chapters 10 and 11 in the book of Acts for tomorrow's sermon. Please read to familiarize yourself with these passages when you have some time in order to prepare for what God would have for us as Kevin preaches tomorrow.
Change in Monday morning prayer meeting location next week - The 6 AM Monday prayer meeting will be held at the Hume/Lee/Lai household at 2945 Raymond Avenue instead of at the Koid/Goh household this coming Monday, as they will be out of town next week. We are actively looking for new drivers/recruits to join the Sunday setup team!

Snippet: The setup team is the prime mover behind the set up and tear down of church at Mack Elementary every Sunday.
Snag: We will be running low on team members, i.e. drivers, come the next quarter (April).
Sought: Candidates age 25 years or older* willing to join the church van/trailer driving rotation (once a month or even less).
Special: Candidates below 25 can also sign up to assist in unloading and loading the trailer before and after church.
Spell: Flexibility in duration and scope of service available. Let's talk.
Suit Up: Reliable on-the-job training and exploratory shadowing provided. Just ask.

Baptism classes. Please be sure to sign up if you are interested in getting baptized. Sign up sheets will be available again this coming Sunday, or you may respond to Sharon.
Membership classes. These classes will begin this coming Sunday, February 7th. If you didn't get a chance to sign up and are interested in attending, please contact Jade.
Book read/discussion. As announced, for those interested, a book called Whatever It Takes will be read together with the focus on ministering to our children/youth/young adults and how to help them in our community from cradle to college. Sign up sheets will be available again this Sunday, and you may respond to Sharon if you are interested by Sunday, February 14th to participate in this book reading/discussion.

Need Work

There is a brother in our midst who is in need of work. His name is Ivan. He is an auto mechanic. He has done work on many types of cars over the course of 30 years. If you have any auto work that you would like done, he would be available to do that by arrangement. His work is good, he's done some work for people in our fellowship already, and he offers a fair price for his labor. Benevolence Fund

Over the past year, many of our people in our congregation as well as in our neighborhood have been helped a great deal by the benevolence fund. Currently, the fund is very low and so I want to encourage everyone to pray and consider how they might give. We'll take our benevolence offering next Sunday, January 31st. I hope that we can keep this common resource available to the people in need in our community.

Adventure Ahead looking for volunteers!

We're starting a new semester at Adventures Ahead and with that comes new opportunities to volunteer! Become a volunteer Reading Buddy and work one-on-one with our students during the week. We meet three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) from 4:00 – 6:00 PM. The minimum commitment for volunteers is one day a week from either 4-5pm or 5-6pm. We keep you with the same child for the entire semester. It is a great way to invest in a child’s life...to build a relationship with him and his family, to share with him the love of Jesus, and to help him achieve success in school!
