Sustainable Development In The News

Urban West Africa is Ground Zero in the global food crisis. From Dakar to Abidjan, the cities in this zone have experienced more protests against rising food prices than any other region in 2008. This article discusses how some innovations in agriculture forced farmers away from indigenous crops — or off the land entirely, and calls for more sustainable solutions.

Clean Tech

Google.org Doubles Down on Solar Thermal Power

This article on the Wired Blog is definitely worth a read - it offers a brief overview of the only three investments in alternative energy companies that Google has announced. Two of them have been into companies using solar thermal technology, which uses mirrors to turn liquid into steam that drives a turbine, lending support to a burgeoning but unproven industry. Cool. Definitely keep this on your radar!
