There have of...

book cover redesigns for Kurt Vonnegut backlist

There have of course been numerous other designs for the Vonnegut classics, but most of us specifically remember Carin Goldberg’s iconic series design from the late 1980s. Our beat-up copies of Bluebeard, Slaughterhouse-Five, and Breakfast of Champions were all in this packaging. Last week, while browsing around Spoonbill & Sugartown bookstore in Williamsburg, a new series design caught our eye on the table. We didn’t see reissues of many titles, including our personal favorites Bluebeard, and Breakfast of Champions. But we anticipate they are on their way.

The newly released and repackaged Vonnegut backlist nicely coincides with the hardcover release of Look at the Birdie (a previously unpublished short fiction story which was recently reviewed by Dave Eggers for the NYT Sunday Book Review). For the jacket design of Look at the Birdie, designer Lynn Buckley incorporates an original illustration by Vonnegut himself. This kind of collaboration is seen on all of the reissued Dial Press paperbacks.

We recognize the cover illustration on Mother Night from the interior pages of Breakfast of Champions. Please leave a note if you recognize the initial origins of any other cover illustrations. After spending a bit of time online, we didn’t uncover much background information on the new series design. Maybe we have to be patient and hope Faceout Books will get the behind-the-scenes story on this?

And, because we couldn’t help but include it, below are a couple first edition jacket designs. (original jacket design for Slaughterhouse-Five by Paul Bacon, jacket design for Breakfast of Champions by Robert Giusti)

mattmcinerney:

This is the follow up to my previous post about redesigning the Scrabble logo. This is the entire academic project: my concept for redesigning the Scrabble packaging. My design strips away the need for a box to hold your board and instead turns the package into the product. This new Scrabble board functions more like a book, featuring the logo and instructions on the outside, with a board on the inside that’s revealed as you open the package. The two pieces/boxes that make up the package and board are hollow and features tabs at the top that can be opened. This is where you’ll find your Scrabble pieces and tiles. To keep the package shut, I embedded two magnets in the material on opposite sides of the board.

The new package is only about 10 inches tall, so it can fit comfortably on a bookshelf, no need to stack it on top of or underneath other board games. This package also cuts down on materials used to make the game. There’s no need to put a box or slip around this, the cover serves as a display for the product on store shelves. If you’d like to see higher quality photos of the project you can check them out on flickr.

We...

Silk brand soy milk packaging redesign and logo refresh

We recently noticed on the shelf a tweaked package design for Silk soy milk. At first glance we didn’t notice a significant difference other than cleaner imagery and the addition and removal of certain taglines. But once we take a better look at the packages side by side, we realize that the logo has been modified letter by letter, but still retains much of the original aesthetic.

So far we can’t find any coverage online about this specific branding refresh of the Silk soy milk flavor line. But we did find several articles from earlier this year about the Silk brand agency transition from Berlin Cameron to Leo Burnett in partnership with Seed Strategy. (as always, if you have more information about the design credits/back story please leave comments).

Roger designs an explosive, typographic galaxy in a new branded promo for Nicktoons. This new approach feels like a huge departure from the aesthetics of the channel we recall as children. The new look aims at the new “target demographic of tween boys.” redefined It is an unusual juxtaposition to set the motion to the tune of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Technorati.com announced the launch of its new redesign on Oct. 14, 2009, quoting comScore for their ranking as the fifth largest social media property.

There’s no lack of the color green on the site for their launch, with the content and advertisement reflecting the use of the color on the site. We can’t help but think that this was intentional, and, if so, we find it clever. Either way, there’s no denying their generous use of the color.

In addition to search upgrades and new, original content from bloggers, the Top 100 got a nice update adding “topical authority,” where blogs are ranked within their respective categories.

CMYK magazine redesign, cover to cover, hits shelves in...

CMYK magazine redesign, cover to cover, hits shelves in November 2009:

From following CMYK’s twitter, we learned of the unveiling for the magazine’s new front cover. The freshly redesigned cover is just a preview of the full design overhaul we’ll get to read all about in upcoming issue #45. Designer Ronald J. Scala II played a heavy role in the publication’s visual refresh. The redesign isn’t all about aesthetics and numerous editorial changes have been made, resulting in “more fluidity and cohesion.” CMYK is swapping out their old tagline of “inspiring visual communication,” with “create, showcase, inspire,” and we can anticipate more international content.

“CMYK has been working extra hard to put the finishing touches on its 45th issue. To date CMYK has published more than 4,000 pieces of creative from over 3,500 aspiring professionals across the globe, handpicked for publication by 180 of the most celebrated creative professionals in communication art. So what better way to celebrate this major milestone than with a cover-to-cover redesign”

As students, CMYK was one of our favorite, must-read magazines. While in college we always associated the publication with student portfolio work and career advice. After graduating it was a great mag to occasionally pick up when looking for illustrators to hire. We think the magazine’s new approach will be more appealing to creative professionals, without neglecting CMYK’s strong student audience. The visual squares on the cover instantly engage the viewer, and give an enticing glimpse of the diversity to be found within the pages.

On a side note: We’re also really looking forward to reading “Remembering Shigeo Fukuda” and “Inside the Mind of Christoph Niemann.” (Maybe it’s time to reconsider a subscription)

The cover of issue #44 features a cut paper illustration by Jared Schorr, titled Paper Cuts. Jared Schorr is a recent graduate of Art Center College of Design. Is this the last student or recent grad given the honor to have their work showcased full-bleed on the cover of CMYK?

But, thought this was worthy of sharing.

mattmcinerney:

This is just one part of a larger academic project in which I’m taking the Scrabble packaging (the board, the tiles, the box) and re-imagining & redesigning it. One of my first steps in the process was redesigning the wordmark. In case you weren’t aware, Scrabble rebranded in March 2008, ditched the iconic logo that I’m sure we all remember as kids, and moved towards a slicker, more contemporary looking wordmark. There are a few elements of the wordmark that I think are good, but for the most part, I don’t like it. I think it abandons too much of the original wordmark’s character and I think dropping the ‘S’ especially is a mistake.

So I tried identifying exactly what I like about the old and the new, pointing it out, and redesigning from there. I wanted to revive some heritage and clean up some problem areas. Above you can see some of the process and the result.

I’ll post pictures of more process and final results soon. Also a quick note: this isn’t an official change, this is my own take on the logo for academic purposes. Feel free to reblog it, but I think that’s an important note to include with it.

The company said the new design, called “20/20” at the Miami-based chain, is already in place at about 60 locations around the world. Burger King expects about 75 more redesigned restaurants to be open by the end of next year. But it will take years before all its locations are transformed. — via AP

“PBS, one of the most highly respected brands in media, is unveiling a new multiplatform brand package this fall. In more than 600 elements that include promo opens and closes, lower thirds, video bumps for IDs and support messaging, Web elements, print templates and more, this collection uses live-action footage, contemporary colors and original music to showcase what PBS is all about - that PBS invites people from all walks of life to broaden their horizons, or, to “Be More.”

PBS stations will debut the new package in conjunction with the September 27 premiere of Ken Burns’s most recent film series, THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA’S BEST IDEA. This immersive documentary takes people not only on a journey to our nation’s most beautiful places, but also on a tour through history to meet the people who dedicated their lives to ensuring these places would forever be available for everyone […]”
