It was an unexpected surprise...

Breyers Ice Cream brand redesign

It was an unexpected surprise to discover a newly refreshed brand identity and ice cream packaging design for Breyers in the freezer aisle of the supermarket last week. Founded in 1866 by William Breyer in Philadelphia, the Breyers brand has gone through many iterations of the actual ice cream carton design over the years. The 1980’s marked the first large turning point for Breyers’ identity on the shelf.

As for the original Breyers logo design, we couldn’t find much information. A couple of sources credit the founder’s son, Henry Breyer, as the designer of the orignal logo and the one who conceptualized the idea of incorporating a briar leaf (an intentional pun on the family name). This is an interesting tid-bit seeing how we always thought it was a mint leaf.

The subtle modifications in the lettering style of the revised logo (right, lettering artist: Ian Brignell) may go unnoticed to the untrained eye.

A new video carousel on the homepage has a wide, 16-by-9 format with clips both short and long, engaging you to dig a little further (after watching a pre-roll of course).

In addition to the live coverage of breaking news and special events, the redesign brings an updated video library to the “video” page.

Other show pages expand upon the content with full-length and segment videos linking to its respective articles. Although there’s nothing really unexpected in this new version of the site, it’s at least a step further along the right track.

As children we loved an educational incentive to get some junk food, but in later years these kind of promotions gained more scrutiny.
O’Brian says, “Yeah, this show is changing hands, but it needs to look like ‘The Tonight Show,’ and by that I mean it should look as if Steve Allen could materialize, or Jack Paar, or Johnny Carson, or Jay Leno — any of those people could suddenly materialize and go into that space and host it,” O’Brien said. “And even though they would all host it differently, it needs to be a space that tells you this is that same ‘Tonight Show.’
“And so, what they decided, and what we all talked about, was an art deco feel. Art deco had an obvious New York school, but it also had a Los Angeles movement — Los Angeles deco that’s quite famous and organic to Southern California.”

Follow us on tumblr, and we just might start following you back (tumblr peer pressure much?).

WTH is Tumblarity and why should I care? Couldn’t help but feeling bad for myself when I saw my “Tumblarity” go down over 100 points because I was enjoying my weekend instead of blogging religiously. Is this the intention? And how do Tumblr Groups get figured into this equation (with limited reasons for reblogging others)?

On a side note, once I fully understand the functionality, the new Tumblr stats Activity page looks really awesome and is designed well.

The focus is on a younger, hipper “Millenial” audience, which speaks to the overal design of the site. Both branding and design work were done collaboratively with Method and Scripps Networks. In Method’s own words, “The goal of the project was to create an authentic and credible experience through which users can interact with various food-related content and each other.” The backend development was handled by KickApps.

Everything is intentionally a little rough around the edges, from the text rag to the diagonal line use.

The exclusive video series episodes have a short and sweet flavor, running under 5 minutes. Kelsey & Spike Cook has an interesting dynamic between two different personalities (you probably know Spike from Top Chef and Kelsey from Next Food Network Star).

One of the most unique parts of the site itself is the rich integration of Facebook Connect. Using your Facebook login you can quickly sign in, create a Food2 profile, and start uploading tips and recipes to share with friends. Comments allow you to upload photos and embed videos, which you can then also add to your facebook (if you want). Oh, and don’t forget to save your favorite stuff, all of which you can do without registration. According to KickApps, “For members this provides a seamless gateway between the two sites and their two communities, and for Food2 it leverages its members’ social graph to social cast activity on Facebook, thus driving traffic.”

UPDATE: Scenes from the launch party:

We were a bit confused when we saw two different logo treatments used at the same location on 23rd Street in NYC (old branding still on the glass doors, but a new environmental signage). Our first guess is that they are debuting a new sans serif logo type for the restaurant chain-and haven’t updated all instances. The business cards from this location also ditches the rougher, more humanistic lettering style. Later in the week we spotted the Chipotle location in the East Village unchanged. Even on the company’s website the lettering style of their brand morphs between the two treatments in the left hand corner (when you hover over with mouse).

If you know more about this, please comment.
