A pressure washer is a heavy duty, mechanical tool that uses high-pressure water to remove mold, grime, dust, mud and dirt off of surface areas and objects like buildings, vehicles and concrete road surfaces. The high pressure of the water is strong enough to, in a sense, scrape off the undesirable element with water itself, leaving the area clean.

Pressure washers are really convenient because they are easy to use, and all you need for them to operate is a water connection and a power connection, depending on the power source of the pressure washer.

A pressure washer comes in various types, varying on size and shape, but mainly the power source. There are electrically powered washers, and also hydraulic washers as well. Probably the easiest ones to use are the washers that are fuel powered, such as diesel, petrol, and gas powered ones.

Fuel is generally the easiest to deal with because the pressure washer is able to be more mobile, and because fuel is usually cheaper under normal economic circumstances.

There are many uses for a pressure washer. The machines with the highest water pressure abilities are used mainly for industrial cleaning applications that need to remove surface layers of certain areas, as well as dust-free cutting of some metals and concrete. For outside usage, gas or propane powered pressure washers provide enhanced mobility that are not available in electric models because they do not require use close by access to an electrical outlet.

However, for indoor applications, it may be worth noting that electric pressure washers produce no exhaust and are much quieter than their gas or propane powered counterparts.

A pressure washer is operated in a similar way a garden hose nozzle is used to increase the outflowing pressure of the water. This machine uses its power source to force high pressure, A regular nozzle is different by nature in that it mainly slows the flow of water, due to its restricting characteristics.

An important function to remember is the amount of water needed to operate the pump sufficiently. The pump cannot take more water from the pipe from it is connected than that water source can provide. Because of this, the hypothetical water supply it is connected to must be able to offer a sufficient amount of water for the pressurized machine to operate properly. The water flow must be at least equal or superior to that of the washer, so that the pump is never starved. Starving a pump can cause extreme damage, possibly permanent damage, so it is important to check that prior to connecting and using the washer.

Remember that a pressure washer is a very dangerous tool that can cause injury if not used in the right way. Prior to its operation it is important to read through the safety instructions to learn anything you might not have known prior to ownership and usage, especially if it is different from what you are used to operating.

The streaming water pressure closest to the nozzle is strong enough to strip flesh right off of the bone. Any small objects found in the water supply can be ejected from the nozzle at high speeds. The cleaning process can also propel any objects on the surface being cleaned at very high speeds.

Pressure washers are so strong that they have a tendency to break up asphalt or something similar if aimed directly at it or in too close of a proximity This happens because the high pressure water can enter any cracks and voids in the surface, further eroding it.

A pressure washer is a very good tool to have, if used correctly. When you take the time to research the type that is right for you, you can ensure complete satisfaction knowing that it fits in with what you need it for.

There is a lot of confusion out there about selecting the right size air compressor to run your air tools. Basically, there are several factors to look at when choosing the proper air compressor for your shop or garage.

The first criteria is horse power rating. Most people assume the higher the horsepower rating on the box, the better the air compressor. However, all horse power ratings are not created equal and can easily be misrepresented. What I mean is, you go to your local giant hardware retailer to pick out a new air compressor to run your impact wrench. They have a 5 hp unit that is priced really cheap. Why is that 5 hp industrial unit cost so much more? 5 hp is 5 hp, right? Not necessarily. Let me explain. Look at how much power the hardware store unit draws. It probably needs around 15 amps from a normal 110 volt circuit. At this rating, you are really getting only 2 hp. The 5hp rating on the box is inflated. To really produce true 5 hp you need at least 24 amps from 220 volt circuit to get it. If you are looking for 5 hp electric compressor, buy the industrial unit and stay away from the cheaper unit at your local hardware store. I am not saying that every air compressor at your local hardware is junk. A lot of times one of those units is all you need. Just be aware of the true horsepower rating.

The next consideration when purchasing a new portable air compressor is, "How much PSI will I need?" For the newbies, PSI is short for "pounds per square inch" and this is how most compressors in the US are rated. In Europe, you will see them measured in bars. PSI is all you need to worry about on this side of the Atlantic. Most of the commonly used air tools require about 90 PSI to operate correctly. However, you will still need a compressor with a higher shut-off pressure. Most air compressors that you find at the local hardware giant are "single-stage" and shut off at 125 - 135 PSI. Don't let that fool you. You might think all you need is 90 psi, so that should work just fine. Generally, these light duty compressors shut off at 100 psi and don't forget about pressure loss in the line. The little light duty compressor will barely run an impact wrench. It might be fine for light duty garage use, but if you really intend use your air tool, more is definitely better. Many industrial compressors are "two-stage," which means they build up to shut-off pressure in two stages. The first stage builds to about 90 PSI and the second stage builds to 175 PSI.

The next rating criteria for air compressors is CFM. CFM stands for "cubic feet per minute". It is a measurement of volume. Basically it is how much air is being moved. Air tools require a certain amount of air volume to run on. PSI is just part of equation. Don't be confused by different CFM ratings at different pressures. Every manufacturer is trying to make their product look better by giving higher CFM ratings at different pressures. The only real concern is how much CFM you will get at 90 PSI. Air compressors have been around for literally thousands of years. Now granted the devices the ancients used for compressing air bear little resemblance to the modern air compressor. However, the basic principle is the same and without the primitive air compressors, civilization would not have evolved as fast it has. One of the primary uses for compressed air was to increase the combustion in a furnace. The operator of a forge would use a bellows to blast compressed air into the furnace to stoke up the heat. This allowed ancient man to produce stronger and better metals for tools and weapons. Most people today would not equate a bellows as an air compressor, but that is exactly what it is. The blacksmith would pull apart the handles on the bellows and a check valve would allow fresh oxygen to rush into the accordion like chamber. Then using muscles as the power source, the blacksmith would squeeze the handles together and the compressed air would shoot out the fitting on the end. Using this process it became possible to create a fire hot enough to smelt ores of copper, tin, lead and iron. Bellows are still used today in a variety of applications. The organ at your local church is probable powered by a bellows that is practically identical to one a thousand years ago. They even pop up in medical applications such as breathing machines in operation rooms.

It wasn’t until later in history that it became possible to compress air using mechanical methods. In the past, only human and animal power was possible to power crude air compressors and this severely limited the utility of these primitive devices. Clearly, an important topic in society today is the importance of obtaining a cleaner environment. Some believe that over the years we have gotten to ignorant concerning the damage being caused to the environment by many different causes, such as waste and pollution caused by manufacturing plants and gas run vehicles. Despite many efforts to get the message out there to people to be more conservative in regards to waste emissions, there was not enough being done in order to significantly make a substantial change.

In order to artificially stimulate the effort to do so there is a wide variety of programs and standards that have been implemented in order to ensure that something is being done to make meaningful environmental improvements. A particularly concerning machine that emits a considerable amount of pollutants is a vehicle run by gas, like a car for instance. A tool that was created to monitor such pollution is called a 5 gas emissions analyzer.

A Great Toy to Have

    If you have any amount of air tools in the garage then you will need a portable air compressor to run them. Most garage hobby mechanics will choose portables over a stationary because they can be used in lots of different applications. A portable unit gives you the option of moving the compressor out the garage and hooking up a nail gun to work in the house or yard.

Electric or Gas Powered

    They are either powered by an electric motor or a gas engine for more professional models. The pump puts the compressed air into a storage tank and then a hose is hooked up to power your air tools. Most portable air compressors are oil lubricated pumps. The oil lubricated models are quieter and generally last longer than oil free models but will require you to change the oil periodically. An oil free model is easier to deal with but will not last as long with prolonged use.

Arrangement of the Air Tank

    Portables generally come in different tank configurations. There are basically two different styles on the market. Pancake style models have the motor and compressor mounted on top of a pancake shaped storage tank. You will mostly see these units running a nail gun. They are popular for this application because you can quickly pick one up and move it around. There is also a twin stack arrangement of the storage tanks. These have two long, narrow tanks mounted next to each other with a wheel mounted in the middle. Both of these types of models are electric powered and will run on a 15 amp house circuit. I would recommend staying away from anything bigger for you r house because they will pop your breaker trying to draw too many amps.

How Big of a Compressor Do You Need?

    Choosing the right size is critical to running your air tools. The most important factor is the storage tank size not horsepower or air pressure. This is where you have to ignore the slick salesmanship on the box. The larger the capacity of the storage tank the longer you can run your air tool. Impact wrenches for example use a lot of air to run them and a smaller tank will quickly run out of air before the pump can refill it. Air volume is really the limiting factor. Almost all air tools require around 90 psi of pressure and all these units will do that. A nail gun for example only requires about 2.2 CFM to run compared to angle grinder that needs anywhere from 8 to 30 CFM. This is why a pancake style is fine for a nail gun but if you are running impact wrenches and air grinder you will need a larger model.

A wire stripper is a simple hand tool with many functions and uses. It looks like a very flat pair of pliers, and has several notches of various sizes cut into the jaws and handle. The grips are almost always made of an insulation material to guard against electrical shock from a live. You should avoid using wire strippers in an electrical application that do not have any insulation. Remember to shut off power to any electrical device you are working on. The jaws have multiple uses depending on what part you are using. For example, wire cutter is at the tip of the tool and further down inside there is a crimper tool for crimping wires. Other notches are crimping different size wires. Use the numbered notch that corresponds to closest to the wire gauge. The series of holes are to cut screws to shorter length. Open the jaws until the holes align , slide the screw inside and squeeze the handle to shear the screw. In order to strip a wire of insulation but not the wire itself, use the series of notches closest to the end of the handle. A little tip that most electricians use is to twist the wire as you pull off the insulation. The twisting action will wind the individual wire strands together and make the wire the easier to work with.

Clean air in your air compressor system is essential fro the safe and efficient operation of this reliable power source. Harmful contaminants like lubricant, dust, dirt, rust , water and water vapor (either alone or in combination) can attack your air compressor and air tools. F to within 20Ë? to 50Ë?F of the ambient temperature, causing the majority of the moisture to condense into liquid water and be removed. 3.    Dryers – Similar to an aftercooler, a dryer removes moisture by reducing the air temperature. Using the same rule of thumb, the temperature reduction represents an average of an additional 30% of the moisture content of the air. This 30% is over and above the approximately 60% an aftercooler removes.

4.    Automatic Drain Valves – The ADV offers a maximum opening for reduced clogging. Instead, it will deviate to either side depending upon the width of the drum and its distance from the fixed sheave, often called the lead sheave. The angle between the center line through the lead sheave and the centerline of the rope leading to the drum is called the fleet angle. Experience has shown that the best wire rope service is obtained when the maximum fleet angle is not more than 1 1⁄2° for smooth drums, and 2° for grooved drums. Water contamination is the great enemy to your prized air impact wrench and other expensive air tools. The common misconception is that if you just drain the air supply tank in your air compressor of excess water, you are protecting your air tool from water damage. While draining your air supply tank is good, you are only preventing rust damage in the tank. The air outlet is generally at the top of the tank and the water in the bottom doesn't make it up there to damage your impact wrench. How then does water get into your air lines and then to your air tool? The answer is condensation. Water condenses and builds up in the air hoses and then travels to your air tool. Also, on a cold winter morning the water that has accumulated in your air lines will freeze and cause even more damage. Frozen water can break loose and damage your tools or even block the air flow in the line. The solution to this problem is install a water filter in your air hose. A good place to put it is midway down your air hose. There it will be out of the way when use your impact wrench under your car and you are trying to get into a tight space. A small investment in a water filter will go a long to prolong the life of your expensive air tools.

Some air tool users try to compensate for water that condenses in air lines by using an air tool oil designed to drive out moisture. First, slow the vehicle down pull of the road to a safe spot. Don’t try to change your tire next to a busy street. No tire is worth your life.
Avoid stopping on a curve on the road or a steep incline. Both of these situations can be dangerous. Passing cars may not see you on a curve or coming over a hill. Also, you should never jack up your car on a incline.
Once you have selected a good, safe spot, turn on your hazards.
Now its time to try and find all those tools that car manufacturers hide all over your car. I would suggest grabbing the owner’s manual before you start your search. Generally, most tire changing tools are stored in several different places and can be difficult to find without good instructions.
Locate the spare tire and remove it from the trunk or lower it from the under the car. Do not do this after the car has been jacked up.
Now you want to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire. Remove the hubcap and grab the lug wrench that came with your car. Generally, these are not that great for breaking a frozen lug nut. If you need more leverage, you may look for a pipe to slip over the end and give you some more leverage or you can even purchase a cordless impact wrench and it won’t be a problem.
First just loosen the lug nuts one at a time. DO NOT take them off, you want to loosen them with the weight of the car holding the tire in place. It is a lot harder to do this with the car in the air and the tire free spinning.
Now you can jack up the vehicle with the jack provided. Slide the jack under the car until it comes in contact with the frame or axle. You should consult your owners for exact place to put the jack. There are several different ways and the owners will tell you exactly.
Raise the car until the flat tire is at least 6 inches off of the ground. You will need this much clearance when you try to put the fully inflated spare tire back on.
Now you can remove the lug nuts and put them in a safe location. Make sure that no part of your body is under the car. Grab the wheel at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions and pull it straight toward you off the car.
Grab your spare tire and roll it over to the car. If you are strong enough, lift the tire up and line it up with lug nuts. Then push it firmly into place. If you are not strong enough, try leaning the tire against the lug nuts and raise or lower the jack until the tire is in the proper height.
Tighten all the lug nuts with your fingers. You will use the lug wrench or cordless impact later.
Lower the car down and remove the jack.

Now tighten all of the lug nuts in a star pattern. Make sure you really put some effort into this. I would suggest going to a garage and having them torqued on properly.

You can walk into to just about any manufacturing building or automotive shop and see the distinctive and bright stream of sparks flying from an angle grinder. Angle grinders make quick work of applications requiring coarse grinding of metal and other materials.

Smaller models that use for 4 to 5 inch grinding disks are lighter and easier to handle. These angle grinders can be found anywhere from a garage to an industrial plant. These tools will make quick work of rusty metal surfaces, remove metal spatter from welding jobs and smooth out rough surfaces. However, the 7 to 9 inch heavy duty angle grinders are primarily used in an industrial environment.

When operating an Air Winch with a manual band brake, the owner or user is required to operate both the winch control and band brake control simultaneously during operations. It is recommended that operators practice operation of brake and winch control with lighter loads until they are capable of operating the machine with both functions.

When lowering loads at very slow speeds, monitor the temperature of the brake bands and or brake housing. A large load/ low speed combination may result in automatic brakes dragging, which could cause heat build up. Indications that there is excessive heat buildup include: housing surface temperatures exceeding 120 degrees C, paint blisters or scorching, or the smell of hot oil or burning paint. If a hot brake is identified, stop all operations. Continual operation of an Air Winch with a dragging brake will cause heat buildup, and may be a source of ignition in potentially explosive atmospheres.

When operating a winch with a manual drum brake, ensure the brake is completely released when load is in motion. Use the control throttle to control the speed of the winch. Do not drag the brake to control the winch speed. If the winch only has a manual drum brake, set the brake to stop winch motion.

Impact wrenches are great, but they can over tighten your lug nuts and cause damage. To do it right, you need a torque wrench and some basic knowledge.

A common site in your neighborhood auto garage is a mechanic tightening up the lug nuts on your car with an air impact wrench. You hear the common screech of the impact wrench as it makes quick work of the lug nuts. You also probably rarely see that same mechanic actually use a torque wrench. Impact wrenches are great tools but they can and will over tighten the lug nuts on your car. At first that doesn’t sound like a bad thing. Tight is good, right? Not necessarily. Most manufacturers recommend using a torque wrench when tightening lug nuts. They will specify a certain ft/lb to dial in on the torque wrench. This insures the nuts are tightened properly. Over tightening can damage the studs and possibly lead to a failure in the future. Here is what happens. When the nuts are tightened, the studs will stretch. This tension holds the wheels on to the rim. If you over tighten the studs you can damage them and they could fail. The best approach is to use your impact wrench to snug up the nuts. Then go back with a torque wrench and tighten to the manufacturer specifications. Next time you are having your tires rotated or changed, make sure the mechanic uses a torque wrench and the correct torque. Having the proper tools makes all the difference and will extend the life of your car.
