after a long absence i am making this mine again and returning to what i know. it is very bare bones for now; i wasn't sure if i was going to continue with the 'blog' format or return with something somewhere else, but i've decided to stay here because it's as close to home as anything could be.

as my kindred ellen wrote, this year we wanted to create a tribute to our mothers, in honour of this mother's day past. for me these photographs came like a stream of consciousness over time, and are in some ways the most telling i have ever created.

i wanted to write a little bit more about them here, but i don't feel fully prepared, or capable to put these things into words just yet.

this april, 'the whistler's grotto' will be auctioned at montreal's first timeraiser event. i am happy to be part of this event as it not only has done a lot to support artists, but has generated 100,000 charitable volunteer hours in communities all over canada. a wonderful thing.

as part of my submission, i was asked to take a few photos for promotional purposes, including photos of my work space, and of myself at work, which i thought might be silly to share here. like a sort of behind-the-scenes, i guess.

this is a photograph of fred, he is the beloved of one of my dearest friends. this was taken with his hasselblad ("the baby"), which he was so sweet to allow me a chance to snap a picture with.

this is to document that once upon a time i held one of these wonderful beasts. even if it may be my last. but i hope that it isn't.

dear diary and dear you (and you, and also you), i stray again from the usual content of this blog to share a tiny snapshot, some promised photographs, of a happy adventure. this year for my birthday the rainclouds that have been hanging over the city for weeks parted for one day and i had ancient bones, and a shrunken head, magic lantern slides of the egyptian pyramids and little stuffed beasts. and i was very happy.

a small step away from the usual. oh little orange room, what a long way you've come. i like to see what objects and personal items people collect, what they choose to fill their spaces with, so i guess this is a tiny peek at mine.

i've also been waiting for an opportunity to show you these beautiful mon petit fantome papercut prints. i adore chad and his gorgeously crafted pieces. his work strikes something deep down inside, deeper down than grandmother got inside the big bad wolf's belly. plainly, chad holds the seed of all fairy tales between the blades of his scissors. i feel very lucky to give these papercuts a home.

october 10th, 2010

last autumn i made my way by bus from montreal to the ink black milky way night skies and endless winding forest roads of vermont to attend the wedding of a longtime friend and faraway kindred, tamera/verhext. for almost ten whole years her words have been a source of deep primal truths and witchen wisdom to me, wonder and laughter and solace, too. when tamera invited me to be there for such an important day, i knew i had to find a way to make it happen.

these photographs feel as lost in time to me as that day did, and still does. for one afternoon we were all transported back to a fairytale forest time of stone altars, nuptials in a delicate hand, whispered oaths and spirit blessings, chandelier crystal strewn tree branches, wild toad stools and elderflower liqueur, babbling brook laughter and fiddle music. i will always be lost for words and honoured to the bone to have been a part of it all somehow. with all my heart, thank you, tamera and sean. long and happy days to you both, forever and ever amen.
