Manchester United have appointed Eva Olid as the new head coach of United Women.

Olid replaces Marc Skinner, who left the club by mutual agreement on Monday after a successful five-year spell at the club.

The 40-year-old has signed a two-year deal, with the option to extend for a further year.

Olid has promised to build a team that will excite the fans while achieving success on the pitch.

“I know they will enjoy watching us play,” she concluded,” she told manutd.com.

“I hope that they keep supporting the team, the players, the staff, everyone, because big things are going to happen.”

The Catalan coach enjoyed an outstanding spell as the coach of Heart of Midlothian Women, leading the Scottish side from the second division to a historic first Premier League title last season.

She also guided them to the Scottish Women’s Cup final in 2024/25, although they lost 2–0 to Rangers.

United will be hoping she can replicate the same success at the club as they look to pursue ‘long-term, sustainable growth and success’.

Olid’s first official game will be the Women’s Super League opening matchday clash at Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Spanish coach said she has always dreamt of coaching in the WSL.

“For me, it’s one of the best leagues in the world. I dream to coach here in this league, [it] was my objective.

“It’s so competitive. Everything can happen every game, and that is what you want as a manager. Everything can happen, no? It’s so exciting.”

Olid will fly with the rest of the squad to Spain next week to continue their pre-season training.

Forward Marcus Rashford is increasingly likely to remain at Manchester United, according to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano.

Rashford enjoyed a successful loan spell at Barcelona last season and was tipped to make a permanent move to the La Liga defending champions.

However, Barcelona opted to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United and Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund instead to bolster their attack.

Rashford has been linked with several other clubs, including Turkish side Fenerbahce, but Man United are yet to receive a formal approach for the English forward.

Romano now says United are optimistic about keeping Rashford beyond this summer.

“Day by day, the feeling internally at Manchester United is that Marcus Rashford has increasing chances of staying at the club,” he said on his YouTube channel.

“The expectation now is that, unless something crazy happens in the transfer market, Rashford could really stay at United and compete for a place. There are currently no concrete moves for his exit.”

Manager Michael Carrick is ready to reintegrate Rashford into the squad. His return could prove crucial for the club next season.

Rashford, hailed by former Man United manager Erik ten Hag as ‘elite‘, would add more quality to the attack with his pace, directness and goalscoring prowess.

Rashford registered 28 goal contributions and averaged 0.57 goal involvements per game last season, outperforming every United forward in both metrics.

His versatility across the frontline could also spare United the expense of signing another left winger or striker, allowing the club to prioritise reinforcements in midfield and at left-back.

He has already accumulated more than 100 appearances for Newcastle despite still being at the very beginning of his career.

Newcastle have no intention of losing another key player after already sanctioning the high-profile departures of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.

Club captain Bruno Guimaraes also appears increasingly close to completing a blockbuster move to Arsenal.

Hall was reportedly frustrated by the way Eddie Howe utilised him during the closing weeks of last season.

According to journalist Danyal Khan, the two clubs have agreed a deal worth up to £14 million, including add-ons.

Man United have also secured a 35% sell-on clause, ensuring they will benefit financially if Vitek fulfils his enormous potential in the future.

Even as he gets older, his leadership qualities should ensure he remains one of the club’s most valuable figures.

Luke Shaw

Unlike the above two players, Shaw has no automatic extension clause in his contract.

That means United must reach a decision on his future before he is free to negotiate with overseas clubs in January.

The left-back remarkably started every Premier League match last season, but expecting him to repeat that feat with Champions League football returning would be highly unrealistic.

Harry Maguire 

Harry Maguire signed a one-year extension earlier this year, with United retaining the option to prolong his stay for another season.

The experienced defender enjoyed a resurgence under manager Michael Carrick and once again proved his value to the squad.

Allowing both Casemiro and Maguire to leave in the same summer would have stripped the dressing room of two influential senior leaders.

Manchester United hold an interest in Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, according to The Telegraph.

The Red Devils have primarily focused on the midfield department this summer, signing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Alongside them, they have brought in goalkeeper Karl Darlow and young winger Tynan Thompson.

United are no longer determined to land a third midfield signing, and The Telegraph claim that the remaining funds could be utilised to strengthen the defence. A new left-back and central defender could be pursued instead.

Atalanta centre-back Scalvini, who can occasionally operate as a defensive midfielder, is one of the names on United’s radar. The club have already scouted him.

United should prioritise deal for left-footed centre-back

Scalvini has developed into a quality central defender during his time at Atalanta. The Italian completed 88 percent of his passes in Serie A last term. He also won almost two aerial duels per appearance with four recoveries, two tackles and two interceptions on average.

Despite the positives, the 22-year-old has an injury record that is quite concerning. He missed 40 games in 2023/24 due to multiple injuries and was absent for another 26 during the 2024/25 season. Last term, it was a similar theme, with 14 matches missed due to four separate issues.

United are already dealing with concerns for Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, and should avoid a move for Scalvini as a result. Meanwhile, Scalvini, valued at over £39 million, is a right-footed centre-back who predominantly plays from the right. The Red Devils should sign a left-footed option instead.

With Martinez’s injury proneness, United have just Ayden Heaven to rely upon as a specialist left-footed centre-back. The club should focus on landing someone with vast experience. Bologna’s Jhon Lucumi would be a much better acquisition than Scalvini for the Mancunian giants.

The Colombian is a superb ball-playing centre-back with an aerial presence and good recovery pace. He also has the physical attributes to suit the Premier League, and has missed just 19 matches for club and country with injuries since joining Bologna in 2022. His £24 million release clause recently expired, but Bologna seem open to negotiating for around the same price.

United have been fancied to beat Juventus to his signature previously. We believe the club should pursue a deal for the 28-year-old. They may have to be quick, as Chelsea have just joined the race.

The Red Devils had a bright start to the transfer window. They recruited Santos and Tielemans in quick succession to reinforce their midfield.

United have been widely fancied to pursue a third midfield signing in recent weeks, but The Athletic claim that their priorities have recently changed.

It is now not certain that another player arrives to reinforce the central midfield, given Mason Mount’s quality displays from a deeper role in pre-season.

United already have four options in Tielemans, Santos, Mount and Kobbie Mainoo for two spots, and may not want another solution in the coming weeks.

Instead, the funds could be spent on other positions, with a left-back being a prime consideration.

United should focus on a new left-back

Mainoo had a brilliant second half to the campaign with United last term, having initially struggled for playing time under former manager Ruben Amorim.

Under manager Michael Carrick, the England international was almost ever-present as the number eight, and he went on to make the Three Lions’ World Cup squad.

On paper, Mainoo should make the starting XI, but Mount could get the nod ahead of him at the beginning of the new season, given he has yet to return for pre-season training.

Meanwhile, Santos and Tielemans could be vying for the number six role. Santos has featured throughout pre-season, and he could line up alongside Mount in the season opener.

With four solid central midfield options, United may feel the funds could be better spent elsewhere, given Bruno Fernandes can also operate from a deeper position if required.

With Marcus Rashford poised to stay and compete with Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu for the left-wing role, the club should focus on landing a new left-back instead.

Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall has been a top target, but a deal looks highly unlikely with the Magpies expected to sanction the high-profile exit of Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal.

The Tyneside outfit have already sold Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, and may not entertain another big-name transfer after the departure of Guimaraes to the Gunners.

Hence, United may need to look elsewhere. If the club are aiming for an experienced left-back, Fulham’s Antonee Robinson could emerge as a possible target this month.

Although the club would ideally have preferred to retain Vitek, they understand his ambition to establish himself as the first-choice goalkeeper elsewhere.

United have already prepared for life without him by signing experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer.

Darlow will act as Lammens’ deputy, with Tom Heaton remaining as the club’s third-choice goalkeeper.

Manchester United are interested in Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi, according to Italian outlet Quotidiano Sportivo.

United are understood to have made enquiries about the Colombian defender, who is valued at around €28 million (£24m).

Man United face stiff competition from fellow Premier League clubs Chelsea and Nottingham Forest for the Bologna ace.

However, Juventus have shown the most interest in Lucumi, submitting a €18m (£16m) bid that was rejected.

Among centre-backs in Europe’s top seven leagues last season, he ranked higher than the 70th percentile for both passes and progressive passes completed.

He also ranked in the 73rd percentile for defensive duel success, although his numbers for possessions won and aerial duel success were below the 60th percentile.

We believe United are unlikely to make a move for Lucumi. Lisandro Martinez and Ayden Heaven are expected to remain their left-footed centre-back options next season.

The Mancunian giants are more likely to sign a left-back than another centre-back if they make any defensive signing.

Man United are targeting a left- back to compete with Luke Shaw, with Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall among their targets.

However, Newcastle have reportedly declared the England international ‘untouchable‘, making a move unlikely this summer.
