Some considerations on the present status of Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 "Sarge"
Update: just realized that this mail-to-blogger stuff works - the mail was posted 2 days after having sent the mail. *lol* styles you implement by using html-tags are kept but line-wraping looks weird. the blogger-software seems to generate a p class="mobile-post" tag - which doesn't seem to have any effect on the posting's design...
as i don't want to spam your feed reader too much, i've just deleted the post - as the article has been already posted on sunday night.

redtux.org :: main updated!

as you might know i've been working on the design of my site for quite a while now. as i've always been quite unhappy with my old site, i did decide not to work with migrating to a new webdesign until everything works perferctly but instead starting to publish my wiki, a transitional forum, a gallery and my planet NNTP (RSS, Atom etc.) online-reader. finally, i decided to put online my experiments with CSS and XHTML for my main website. thus, you can have a look at it and tell me here on my blog what you think of it. comments, criticisms and reports of proper experiences are always welcome. right now there are only 3 sites finished but after i've installed WML (this afternoon) changing all the old content to the proposed design shouldn't be much of work.

oscar as boring as every year!

sunday night i've been watching the presentation of the acadamy awards on TV. yesterday night they've been repeting it on Austrian TV. apart from the fact that i rarely go to the cinema and therefore didn't know most of the films, i must say that the show has been as boring as this year's Opern Ball. the bourgeoisie should really invent something new to raise its image and distract the working class from its growing exploitation.
antonio banderas is a really bad singer and also beyonce has already been better, not to mention carlos santana. that yo-yo ma has been playing to the homenage for ronald reagan (and the other artists who died last year) in my eyes really has no excuse! the most annoying thing to me was that the bandolero clint eastwood was treated like a king. nevertheless, there are still good movies. tonight - at my father's birthday (february 29) - i've been watching Accordeon Tribe with my parents and can only recommend it.

while writing down my experiences with installing sarge on a laptop and my thoughts on the project status of debian, more and more came into my mind and the posting became kind of article. as it's not the sense of a blog or diary to write that long postings, i have moved it here. sorry for the inconvenience!

as many friends have problems configuring stuff and have questions that seem quite obvious to me, i decided to "log" each time i configure something on my system in order to create small and simple HOWTOs and thus making use of my wiki. the first such article in on Firefox. i've been rarely using Mozilla because it was quite slow on my old PCs; like StarOffice (now OpenOffice) it did eat lot of valid system ressources i wanted to reserve for other stuff. although Firefox still crashes sometimes, it seems that the Mozilla Project has advanced pretty much - on there site they claim to finally take up Microsofts broken Internet Explorer. however, i've been playing with it a bit and will also post some screenshots within the next days.

Silly Questions
while configuring blogger, i notice there was a random question on the bottom of the profile settings. i guess it should make my blog a fun place. although i didn't consider it so fun, i'll post it here - in case it makes some readers laugh. :-)

Q: If there is no I in team, why is there meat?
A: The meaning of the word (semantics) may include an "I" - but if you just look at the set of letters, you get meat when reading team from behind... ;-)

tonight i've been playing a bit with the planetplanet software, with the Pivot Weblog software (which didn't let me create an account *smile*) and with CUPS. i recently got an old DEClaser 1152 Laserprinter and finally have set it up for my network. all i had to do was to download the dc1152f1.ppd driver from Adobe and register it.
$ sudo lpadmin -p DEClaser1152 -E -p dc1152f1.ppd.gz -v parallel:/dev/lp0
today i'll post an article on how to install a network printer and make it work under Windows. but not now, as it's already 8:55 in the morning and i need some sleep! :-D

Migrating from blogger?! Actually, I am looking for a blog I can host directly on my site. In the last days I have been working a lot on my website. Playing with themes can make a lot of fun but I still have to learn cascading style sheets and XHTML better.

I have also set up some new sites, amongst them redtux.org :: planet, redtux.org :: gallery and redtux.org :: calendar. The calendar is based on pal; the index.html is regularly updated by a cron job and the style stil needs some hacking.

I also have created an account at LiveJournal (unfortunately, the nick redtux was already taken by someone else) and have been playing arount with virtual hosts redirect in the Apache Webserver. Now, I've got wiki.redtux.org and forum.redtux.org running. Although the VHost planet.redtux.org doesn't work yet, I'll try to finish this tonight.

Now I go to bed! ;-)

After a long break I'm blogging again. I don't know if anyone is actually reading this but I consider this blog a kind of "reminder" for myself - where I can look up what happened in February 2005 several years later; hopefully my blog will still exist at this time. :-)

These days I've been sick and thus had time to update my website: Tiny Red Penguins
I will try migrating my old website (purely written in HTML 4.0) to a new system (XHTML 1.1 and CSS 2.0) and want to maintain a Forum together with my girlfriend, Gerti. She lives in Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia, and is currently attending a C++ programming lecture. Her lessons are blogged on my site, so that I can learn with her.

Appart from that I've done some research: 1. on the situation of asylum seekers and immigrants in Austria for an article for the next issue of Vorwaerts (paper of the SLP) and 2. on Free Software solutions for media streaming through the internet, and put it on my wiki.

Next tuesday is the Linuxday 2005 in Klagenfurt, which I wanted to attend. Although I would like to visit Gerti every weekend, it's too expensive, so I don't know if I will go. There is a workshop on grml, a bootable GNU/Linux Live-CD for geeks, which I have been testing.

I have decided to read more blogs and feeds, although I had to realize that this costs a lot of time - but it enables me to directly get interesting information for which I otherwise had to search a lot. Right now for example I got news from Creative Commons that Microsoft is running a site licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which only requires that "you must give the original author credit". Because of problems with my cable provider chello.at and their new cable modems I did not have internet for a while. Unfortunatly, I therefore couldn't read my mails. Amongst other "victims" of this "technical failure" there is my sister who is in Cali, Colombia at the moment and whose emails I could not reply. She now has a boyfriend and just started studying at the "Universidad del Valle" last week. I hope she is doing fine.

Finally, I have been reading a lot on the history of the Committe for a Workers' International and it's British section in the last days. I will post some links tomorow, as it's quite late now and I should get some sleep. I will also be working on my home-network and hopefully wipe-out some old PCs... ;-)

Free Software for Free People!

Last sunday I've been dancing at a Cuban bar called Floridita with two friends of mine after having spent a boring evening at Paddy O'Brien's, where most of the people are about 15 years old. :) I did really need to chill a bit after some hard days of manifestations and events! ;) However, it was cool to see that Hacktivism is growing here in Austria.

On wednesday I did participate at the manifestation against software idea patents here in Vienna; together with Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Movement and the GNU Operating System, we expressed our discontent with the decision of the Council of Ministers to introduce software idea patents in the European Union. After the manifestation we went to a pub where I met an activist who invited me to drive with him to the opening of the GNU/Linux days in the city of Linz. Here we spent the whole day. RMS hold two interesting speeches on Free Software and the threat of software idea patents in the EU and transformed himself into Saint IGNUsius, of the Church of Emacs. Thursday evening we went to the restaurant of the Rosa Lila Villa where I haven't been for years.

Friday I spent the whole day at this guy's place trying to install Debian GNU/Linux on his Laptop. As the Knoppix distribution of the GNU/Linux Operating System has a good hardware recognition and as he was already working with this Live-CD Operating System I decided to use it as installation base. Unfortunately, we faced several problems while installing the system on the harddisk and fine-tuning it, although it worked without any problems (but a little bit slow) while running from CD. Well, after this stressing day I went to my friends at quintessenz at the evening, where I agreed to help out at the JUX project - a Knoppix variant particularly made for youth.

Wow, I've been so busy these days that it took me three days to write this brief blog-entry. :) Next time I'll speed up a bit, I promise... *smiling*

Microsoft is a Virus itself

Right now I am sitting here at a friends' place, helping him to get rid of all those cute viruses and trojan horses or worms he has on his computer. Last time I was here I had to fight with a worm that even the Anti-Virus software itself had not recognized as malicious. At the moment the Anti-Virus programme has found 21 viruses, but I know that it won't help just to delete them. If you really want to protect yourself from Sasser and other attacks, you shouldn't use software like Internet Explorer, Outlook or Word at all. Also from a political viewpoint it would be best to avoid Microsoft applications and Windows as a whole and use Free Software and switch to a stable and secure system like GNU/Linux instead. Do not rely on propietary software like your firewall or your Anti-Virus software, but trust this fast growing community that has already proven in the past its ability to fix severe bugs within hours... You could be a part of it!

Watch out and spread the word!

Hi folks!

I finally found some time (and motivation) to do some work on my site. As you know, it's all work in progress, but I have now scanned some pictures and am working on some help for Windows users to use Free Software. I noticed that most people come here through a GNU/Linux operating system, which means that I couldn't attract the majority of those guys and girls out there who _really_ need some help. *smile*

Apart from that I am working on my quasi network - setting up some very old (80486 etc.) PC's for different purposes (playing CD's and ogg vorbis files, a terminal just for surfing, another one for SSH sessions, one for running screensavers all the time :) and so on). If you have any ideas, just mail me. I have totally nine PC's available (at least) and enough disk space, but a small amount of memory (RAM) and pretty bad video cards (donations are welcome *lol*).

This Blog Entry is being written in the GNOME Blog Poster (gnome-blog) - I can really recommend this handy tool. If you don't like GNOME (for what reason ever) try a similar programm; it's really worth, as you don't have to open your webbrowser every time you want to post something. (Okay, it didn't work; had to go to http://www.blogger.com/ - but next time it will work for sure - at least I hope so. *g*)

NB: I am also running a Blog at http://redtux.user.amessage.at/ (Jabber) - who knows if I'll manage to have a technical log book beside my personal weblog some day. :)
