Just finished work on a new website last week for a new up and coming Interior Decorator and Artist Sunita Hoorpah. The site uses a clean and minimalistic style to tell the user what Sunita is about and to showcase her talents. The Bokeh effect

First post of 2010, so I decided to try creating Bokeh effects in Photoshop. Bokeh is the blur in photography, or the artistic quality of the blur, or the way a camera shows out of focus points of light. I came across a video tutorial, so once I learnt the basics, I played about with different techniques, putting my own variation on it.

Over the Christmas period I upgraded my WordPress to version 2.9, I didn’t realise that it broke half my site, not allowing users to post comments and removing my sidebar with all my nice little widgets. So as an emergency, I have put up a basic framework, which I will start to design in the new year. The site is going to look a bit plain for the time being but should be a good experience building a new one, as my WordPress and coding skills have come a long way in the last year.

I don’t really consider myself a photographer, but do love taking pictures when I see something interesting and when I go away on holiday. I also don’t own a digital camera, most of the time I just use my mobile which does a good enough job to capture the moment. With some of the photos I take, I like to play about with them in photoshop to see what effect I can get.

The pictures below were either taken with a Sony digital camera or my Nokia mobile phone.

Updating my Illustrator skills

Here are some pieces of 3D work I done during my time at university.

RSA – Artificial Intelligence animation

This was my entry for the RSA (Royal Society of Arts), where I had to come up with a storyboard for an animation about Artificial Intelligence. The story was about an an electronic chessboard where the pieces control themselves. I did the storyboards as well as producing a linetest.

Peperami

This was a personal project I undertook when I left university. I choose a drawing that I did back in the early nineties and began modeling it in 3D. I decided that I wasn’t going to animate it, just concentrate on modeling and textures, as I did not really expand upon this before.

I done the original drawing during a time where I would copy from interesting pieces I saw. This was from a Peperami advert I saw in a magazine.

Old 3D work – Part 1

I went through my computer the other night, and found some old 3D work I did back when I was at university. So I got myself a Vimeo account and uploaded some of the animations I done. Most of this work is 8-9 years old now, so I often wonder where my skill level would had I continued it.

The Elements

This was one of my first animations, done back in 2000, animating the four different elements.

Corkscrew

While the elements brief was running I also had to choose a household object and attempt to model it 3D. I do not know what I was thinking but I decided to choose a corkscrew, which at the time seem extremely hard for a beginner but looking back was a good challenge.

PDA product & interface design

For this brief I had to design a new form of PDA, with a themed interface. My idea was a PDA which was smaller than the current ones currently out at the time, where the screen could fold out at the push of a button. For the interface I looked at Mondrian for an inspired theme, using the thick lines and block colours to build the user-interface.

Design work – QVC shopping channel

I have been working at QVC shopping channel (UK) for nearly a year and a half now, and have used the opportunity to not only expand my CSS and XHTML, but also my Photoshop skills. Working alongside the photography department sometimes required photo retouching. A lot of this was self taught, but the company also sent the design team on a PS advanced course.

Header panels

The design’s team everyday creativity was shown in the homepage, which was updated everyday along with the department page for each product area. This involves designing panels which linked though to the different areas of the site and a hero image which would be showing a promotion, or promoting a brand for that day or week. This is a typical layout of a department page (left), our designs would have the right side to work on so that a strap line and copy could go on the left side.

Brandshops

Brandshops are areas of the site where the company had specific pages dedicated to some of the big selling brands. This also included about pages, and user guides. When designing these pages, we often had to adhere to a style guide of that particular brand while making it work within the QVC site.
