Interesting tease article here from Ragan’s Health Care Communication News, and article begins to scratch the surface for digital rounding. Here we have an infographic from Ubicare.com showcasing the pathway from patient to the content management system and reducing the amount of time the provider has to connect with the patient for repetitive tasks. The one piece we are missing, leveraging these tools to create a connection between the patient and provider. Specifically automation leads to a quality provider/patient experience.

Digital rounding is more than curated content and robust technology, it is a connection that builds relationships of trust. Quint Studer was a pioneer in conceptualizing what it meant to round in hospitals. A idea of encouraging leadership to get away from the C-Suite section of the hospital and walk the floors of the hospital to talk, listen, engage, and create a culture of change.

This notion of rounding became a global initiative for physicians, creating consistent touch points with the patient. These touch points were more than just walking the floors of the hospitals, it was creating connections with the patients to encourage dialogue and culture of trust.

Digital rounding is a newer frontier where healthcare providers can move beyond the physical hospital into a virtual world of interaction, leveraging social media, blogs, tele-medicine and other digital tools as touch points. These tools create a bridge between the healthcare provider and the patient, allowing for synchronous and asynchronous communication to happen regardless of geographic and time barriers.

Ubicare.com provides great tools to connect the patient to the healthcare organization and provider, but we have to remember that this information has to be a pathway to real, organic conversation between patient and provider. These tools maybe part of the essential catalyst for patient care and patients taking charge of their care; but it boils down to creating a conversation so the healthcare provider and the patient can work together.

When we work with hospitals deploying enterprise level social media initiatives, digital marketing tools, community building programs, and our content advocacy program; they always lead back to creating a connection point with the healthcare provider. Digital tools are only an extension, part of the tool bag; yet the road always leads back to patient and provider trusted connection.

Is it possible – in 2016 – that you should revise the roles of your marketing team? I am going to guess that the majority of hospital marketing team roles look something like this:

VP of Marketing

Director of Marketing

Marketing Manager

Marketing Coordinator

Granted your team might look a bit different but I am sure they have not changed much over the last 15 years. The problem is these are job titles and not roles and are based on vertical reporting. If I look at a LinkedIn profile, where your job title is one of these, I am not real sure what you actually do – only who you must report to.

Take a minute and think about your department and the actual responsibilities they have. Why don’t we look at a new way of staffing? Align your staff with goals/objectives of your department. Make it clear who does what and why.

I feel there are four key areas that need coverage:

Strategy – someone needs to focus on what we are doing, where we are going, and the why.

Operations – a role needs to be devoted to making things happen – and happen within budget.

Creative Services – someone to create stuff – or at lease be over the process and direction.

Measurement – someone needs to make sure what we are doing is actually working.

So for example… Give employees areas of responsibility and have the vertical reporting fall within those areas. Those same employees from above might look something like:

VP of Strategic Planning & Marketing

Director of Marketing Operations

Creative Services Manager

Marketing Analytics Coordinator

Below is a list of possible jobs/responsibilities that I feel would be a good starting point for most organizations to kick around. Look at your internal department and push for roles that will help you provide value while still taking into account responsibility level and discipline.

Strategy

CMO/SVP/VP/AVP

Director of Strategic Planning

Operations

Director of Marketing Operations

Marketing Services Manager

Measurement

Director of Marketing Analytics

Director of CRM

Creative Services

Director of Creative Services

Creative Services Manager

Director of Media

Photographer

Videographer

Graphic Designer

What roles are core and should be part of every marketing department?

Our faculty members are excited to meet you, share what they know about social media and digital marketing and what works in the healthcare industry. One of those faculty members is Thornton Kirby, President and CEO of the South Carolina Hospital Association.

Thornton is recognized nationally as a leader in health care reform and patient safety, and under his leadership South Carolina has emerged as one of the nation’s top states in the quality of hospital care. We asked Thornton what he hopes people will take away from his session about Digital Marketing and Communications.

“Today’s health care consumers are taking greater interest in their personal health and demanding all kinds of information they need to make the best health decisions for themselves and their families. For most of them, the main source of information is the Internet, and specifically social media. But there is so much information on the Internet, it’s difficult to know what is accurate and what should be ignored. According to our research, South Carolinians see hospitals as credible sources of information and look to them for information on health and health care. Hospitals take this role very seriously and treasure the trust of their patients. If we’re not actively communicating with our communities, we’re leaving a void that may be filled by others, whose information may not be as accurate as our citizens deserve. With health care consumers on social media, that’s where hospitals need to be.”

Join Thornton and the rest of the Digital Health Mini MBA Certificate Program faculty and learn how to take part in and shape the conversations happening around you and your healthcare system.

Bobby is a proud Clemson Alum and has been deeply involved with getting the mini MBA program off the ground this year. We asked Bobby why he felt like this opportunity was so important to those in the surrounding healthcare communities.

“Capturing, creating, and sharing content has become a vital business opportunity for hospitals and health care providers. Everyday, consumers are seeking information important to the health of their families, friends, and loved ones. We know that more and more people are reading blogs, reading online medical information, and sharing content using social outlets as portals for conversations. We also know that these same consumers are influenced by content provided in Google searches and also their social media news feeds where friends and family members are having discussions. So the critical question stands, does your hospital want to be a part of the conversation *and* provide relevant information vital for patient choice?”

We are one month out from our first ever Digital Health Mini MBA certificate program at Clemson University. Program participants will learn from some of the brightest in the digital healthcare space, including Reed Smith, the Founder of Social Health Institute. Reed focuses on the integration of social computing into hospitals and other healthcare organizations and will be presenting the session on Digital Marketing and Communications. Participants will learn about spreading and increasing the magnitude of your brand and how to connect your digital goals to business metrics.

We asked Reed what he hopes individuals will learn from his portion of the Digital Health Mini MBA Certificate Program:

“Gone are the day of healthcare providers deciding what they will tell you and what you should know. The internet and more specifically social media have changed the dynamic of how patients gather information and make decision. Understanding how the game has changed and how to participate is essential to success. How will you engage and retain employees, how do you inform potential patients of new resources, and how do you become a trusted source online to your peers? The way we ‘market’ has to change. It is a conversation and you need to be a part.”

Program participants will learn from some of the brightest in the digital healthcare space, including Farris Timimi, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Timimi uses digital successfully in his professional life and will be addressing the following during his session this summer:

What is digital professionalism

Where do medicine and digital communications intersect

How does digital impact the delivery of medicine

How can a hospital involve MD’s in an overall communication strategy

Dr. Timimi shares his insights on the importance of healthcare in the digital age:

“Social media represents a profound opportunity for health care providers. For patients, it can empower them, support those who are isolated by their disease or by geography, and give voice to disease communities. For health care providers, it adds a new dynamic, that of one-to-many medicine to the power of one-to-one practice. These tools, often viewed as limited to only push marketing use, can provide a revolutionary addition to the dynamic of health care in the digital era.”

Lee Aase of The Mayo Clinic will kick off the program on May 15th with a specific purpose in mind. We asked Lee what he hopes people will walk away with from his session titled Fundamentals of Digital Healthcare Business.

“For those in healthcare leadership positions, the question is not whether your organization will be represented in social media, but how you will be represented. Failure to engage leaves the field to others, who may not share your organization’s goals. But social media communication should not be considered in isolation; it’s part of a continuum of communication and marketing, and social strategies should support broader organizational strategies.”
