Pacific coral reefs dying . . . !?

An Associated Press report indicates that coral reefs are dying faster than expected. The climate change is among reasons for this decline . . .

Coral reefs in much of the Pacific Ocean are dying faster than previously thought, according to a study released Wednesday, with the decline driven by climate change, disease and coastal development.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill found that coral coverage in the Indo-Pacific - an area stretching from Indonesia's Sumatra island to French Polynesia - dropped 20 percent in the past two decades.

About 600 square miles of reefs have disappeared since the 1960s, the study found, and the losses were just as bad in Australia's well-protected Great Barrier Reef as they were in poorly managed marine reserves in the Philippines.

The Great Barrier Reef and its bounty is under attack. Climate change threatens existence of one of the world's grandest ecosystems.

Off Australia's east coast, you will find the Blue Outback, a kaleidoscope of life that is the Great Barrier Reef, the world's biggest structure built by living organisms. But it is under siege from climate change and warming waters that have twice bleached its spectacularly colored corals white.

"It really looked like Christmas, like someone had just come across and put snow over everything," said Perry Jones, captain of a charter boat, who saw the mass bleachings firsthand in 1998 and 2002.

The mass bleaching in the summer of 2002 affected 60 percent to 95 percent of reefs in the marine park, according to a 2004 joint . . .

Water Quality Measurement Guide

I've found the following to be a good guide to go by when comparing water quality measurements. This is a general guide that I've found to be beneficial and has lead to the success of my tank continually looking impressive and staying healthy. This is a compilation averaged out from a variety of successful reef keeping enthusiasts.

These readings should be a minimum of what you should be keeping track of when you first start your tank. These same readings should be a goal for even the well established tank and should be taken periodically at that point.

All of us should be aware of how the fish supplier gathers our wet fishy pets. The wholesaler shouldn't 'turn the other way' if it's discovered that his supplier is using techniques that adversely affects the fish, corals and inverts delicate life when they are being caught.

Giving thanks on Thanksgiving Day

To all my readers, customers, colleagues and friends, on a personal note . . .

Today in the US we celebrate Thanksgiving Day! :o)

I'm sure that even though there are many of us thatare grateful and thankful each and every day for all that we may have, this is still a day that's designated for this entire nation to give thanks . . .

I'm sure you have your traditions on this day as do I, like watching some good competitive football and eating excellent home cooking with the entire family and/or with close friends! :o) This tradition as well as watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, the Rose Parade on New Year's Day, a 4th of July celebration and others, is also a time to reflect on world events and how many of us SHOULD be very thankful for what we have.

Perhaps you don't live in the US - but even if you do not - I'm sure you have a time or day, maybe even everyday - that you take the opportunity of giving thanks. In our busy everyday lives, we may not fully appreciate what we have - our LIFE!

Again, as I've done many times, I want to take this time to thank our troops who put their lives on the line, done in an unselfish way. It requires great sacrifice on their part and I'm truly grateful for their unswerving service to their country! Having served in the military, there's nothing more satisfying than knowing people appreciate what's being done.

No matter if you agree or disagree with how our troops are being managed in 'wars' throughout the world, we still are grateful for their sacrifice and duty to country!

Before writing to you, I happened to read the latest news on the net - and again, no surprise - more blood being 'spilled' in Baghdad. Most of us may be lucky, and live in a country where we are sure to wake up alive! It's so important to keep this in mind, for often many of us take too much for granted.

So give thanks for what you have, for the life you have and your family and friends you spend time with. This earth is but a tiny piece of our universe. It is however,the only place where we can live. The catch is, we have to all get along with each other in a peaceful way, that is our challenge! :o)

Every single living person CAN make a difference!

I hope that you, your family and your friends have a safe and pleasant day and upcoming holiday weekend! :o)

Whenever we start on any new venture, there are generally people that are more than willing to put in their opinion. It is no different when you wish to set up your first saltwater tank. You may have people say, "What do you want to do that for?" You may also have people that will offer lots of advice. They will talk as if they know everything there is to know about saltwater tanks, and they might. However, unless you are absolutely certain of a person's expertise on the subject, do not accept the first piece of advice you hear.

If you are uncertain about what to do when setting up your tank, you do have options to choose from!

How important is lighting in a saltwater tank? It is crucial. It will make it, or break it. Why? It is imitating the natural sunlight that these tropical creatures need to live and flourish. You will very likely want to have corals and anemones in your tank. Most of these creatures need the proper type of lighting in order to grow and prosper without difficulty.

One of the decisions individuals base their choice on when purchasing the types of lighting they need - is the cost of how much that lighting can be!

That's already the wrong thinking!

If the proper research is done prior to maintaining a reef tank - you'd already know what kind of lighting would be needed and therefore be aware of how much it would cost.

Certain types of lighting can be very expensive though - that's for certain!

However, this shouldn't be a reason to not use the necessary lighting for the aquarium - for it could mean life or death for your precious tank-mates!

From the initial purchase of the tank - you should already know what type of system you will maintain.

Patience is a virtue! It's also the most important aspect to consider while involved in this hobby - practicing it should be considered a requirement! :o)

There is much to consider in the saltwater fish and reef keeping hobby, all of it has to do with slowing down and looking at the big picture.

The biggest thing is trust. Trust that all this patience and waiting will be worth it in the end. As a result, you will reap the benefits of a beautiful and peaceful saltwater or reef tank - if you have the patience to start it right.

Patience starts with the proper research which was adequately explained in our earlier series of articles.

It follows through with 'getting your feet wet' first rather than simply just 'jumping in'! Everyone approaches the setting up of tanks differently. However, everyone should at least follow the same principle - take your time. There may be certain aspects of tank management that seem tedious and routine - but they are not. Be careful to not fall into the trap of complacency - you'll end up not spending the needed time with the necessary maintenance tasks and as a result your aquarium will suffer.

It's easy to want to have a beautiful tank right away and see the fish in your tank immediately! Who likes the 'look' of an empty looking tank? Nobody - right? However, moving too quickly . . . (read more here)

Research leads to planning. Once you have all the information you need about what equipment you need, the types of fish, corals and invertebrates from which you have to choose, the conditions you want to achieve in your new tank, and the financial as well as time commitments necessary for the maintenance of the tank - you are then ready to make a plan.

There is a definite plan of action that has to be implemented before starting in this hobby.

Deciding how much of a budget will ultimately be your gauge on how you will approach the saltwater fish and reef keeping hobby.

Your saltwater tank adventure will begin with choosing the size of tank you wish to have. You will need to take into account the size of tank you can accommodate in your home. Then you can make a decision as to what types of fish and invertebrates you wish to have in your tank, knowing precisely which ones to choose to live together. You will have all the proper equipment to ensure you will be able to maintain a healthy environment in your tank. You will know the proper lighting levels and temperature and you will know to keep the salinity levels constant (this means replacing evaporated water on a daily basis).

It's so easy to get excited about this wonderful hobby after seeing all the beautiful fish and corals at your LFS (Local Fish Store). So it's no surprise that many individuals, without any thought of taking a step at-a-time, purchase what they see - almost immediately! Did you know that a large number of fish enthusiasts have found their way into this hobby exactly this way . . . ? However, many of them discovered that they could have spent Less money, Less time and Less effort if they simply did the proper research.

Anyone involved in this hobby must be well informed of what's involved. Multiple opinions should be investigated from a good source. So be careful to not rely on just one source of information!
