Last weekend, Reef Builders held Reef Stock 2011 at the Denver Downtown Aquarium. Reef Stock is an annual 1-day event that showcases new products, the coolest livestock, and great speakers from the reef industry. I decided to check it out to see what new reef gizmos will be announced and displayed.

I’m highlighting the best gizmos at Reef Stock on this post so prepare to scroll a bit. You mak click on the photos for bigger versions.

Tunze

One of the big announcements at Reef Stock 2011 was the upcoming Tunze Nanostream 6095 that will push out up to 10,000 lph (~2,650 gph) at only 21 watts. I was told that it will provide flow to cover a maximum of 2.5 feet wide by 4 feet. As with other Nanostreams, it will have a magnet mount and the output strength can be controlled via a Tunze controller or 3rd-party variable controllers. MSRP is expected to be around $270.

Ecoxotic

Another big announcement is Ecoxotic‘s new 100 watt(!) Cannon LED pendant. It is powered by custom dimmable 10×10 Edison Opto multi-chip blue or white LEDs. I was told that these new pendants were mainly for use on bigger establishments but I wouldn’t be surprised if some hobbyists will use them for their tanks. MSRP will be about $499.

Check out the new, wider 100w cannon pendant compared with the original cannon pendant:

Holding it to give perspective to its size.

Ecoxotic was also showing off their EcoPico desktop aquarium. Two were set-up as saltwater tanks with clowns and corals from ORA. One tank was set-up as a freshwater planted tank, which I heard was aquascaped by Jake Adams of Reef Builders. The three tanks were raffled off towards the end of the event.

Sun Brite LED

Sun Brite LED showed their newer, longer Slim Line S with 6 additional Cree XP-G LEDs (a total of 18) than the non-S version.

Check out its PAR output from about 18″:

Sun Brite also had their T10 LED Tubes on display. It was interesting that they can be mounted using regular endcaps. Their lengths range from 12″ to 72″ — they actually had the 72″ on display.

The Portal

Not really new but I was amazed how popular The Portal aquarium viewers were. They had the 4″ portals displayed as with the newer 2.5″ that you can move and slide around the tank.

Check how The Portal worked as a macro lens:

Aqua Medic

In one corner, the Aqua Medic had their Yasha nano tank setup. It was great to see it running with their Turboflotor skimmer and Nanprop pump neatly hidden at the back.

Reef Brite

Reef Brite was also showing their newly improved XHO LED strips. They had this curved mounting accessory that makes you connect several XHOs to become one curved solid lighting fixture.

Avast Marine

Avast Marine had their upcoming “Stealth” cone skimmer on display. Check out the tinted body that will for sure minimize algae growth – great for those with refugiums in their sumps.

Also check out the custom venturi on the Sicce PSK-1000:

Avast also had their new Mutiny Ozone reactor on display.

EcoTech Marine

EcoTech Marine was also there to promote their upcoming Retail Partnership Program. I took a snap of the different wet side assemblies to compare their sizes — MP10 (smallest), MP40, and MP60 (biggest).

Nano Customs

I’ve reserved my favorite gizmos for last. Chris and Clive (evilc66 in most forums) of Nano Customs were showing off their in-house milled and assembled lighting products.

The Duo 700 (that I reported previously) came in a black powder blasted finish unibody enclosure, with slider potentiometers that can be switched to be controlled via a 3rd-party controller:

It was the first time I’ve seen their unibody Hybrid LED + T5 fixture that first appeared in last year’s Reef Stock. New is the driver that comes with it that looks and functions similar to the Duo 700:

Lastly, for DIYers, Nano Customs will be coming out with a sleek and stylish 10″ Heatsink Kit where you can just stick and connect whatever LED combinations you want. It will come with a black anodized heatsink and a milled fan port at the top with the fan held in between the acrylic sheet (white on the pic but may come in different colors in the future) and the heatsink. There will be mounting holes at the top and hanging kits will be included, as well as a clear acrylic screw-in splash guard to protect the LEDs. I was told that the MSRP will just be around $135.

Clive brought an early prototype of the heatsink kit, assembling an over-the-top LED mix using four of the new 4,500K 18 watt Bridgelux N1203 LEDs with 32 Cree XR-E with 60 degree lenses. At its maximum setting, it can hit 1500 PAR at 18″ and can start melting the acrylic splash guard in a few minutes.

The splash guard was removed to keep it from deforming.

Final Thoughts

I was told that more than 500 people attended Reef Stock 2011. This was my first Reef Stock, and I enjoyed it. It was great meeting fellow hobbyists and folks from the industry. Thanks for organizing it Reef Builders!

Oh, let me squeze in one more pic. Check out Mr. Saltwatertank doing his thing.

I hope you guys enjoyed my coverage.

It has become common practice nowadays to use some kind of media reactor to run Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) to keep your the water of your tank crystal clear and/or Granulated Ferric Oxide (GFO) to keep the phosphate levels down. Because GAC & GFO media usually come in small granules, most reactors use foam pads at the bottom and at the top to prevent the media from coming out. In time, the pads get clogged due to media and detritus getting trapped. As the water flow decreases due to the clogging, the media starts clumping up until water flow is reduced to a trickle, or worse, completely stop.

Reef Octopus has released a new type of media reactor, which they call “media filter,” that does not use foam pads. Instead, it uses two conical strainers with long fine slots at the bottom and at the top. Coral Vue (the primary distributor of Reef Octopus products in the US) was nice enough to send me one to review.

As with the Super Reef Octopus Biopellet Reactor that I reviewed previously, the Reef Octopus Media Filter (MF-1000) came in a very similar white rectangular box. It is well packed, with the reactor and some of its parts securely held between two carved styrofoam pieces.

Read the full review after the jump.

The image below shows how fine the slots are on the cone. The 1/2-inch water inlet is also located at the bottom.

Water is then pushed up through small holes underneath the cone strainer.

The cone strainer at the top is of the same size than that of the bottom. It is held in between the top cover which is screwed on to a rubber gasket that makes it air tight.

A 90-degree elbow is also built to the top cover above the top strainer.

The water outlet comes with a ball valve with a union connector to control the flow, just in case you are using a strong pump or a small amount of media. A 3-foot 1/2-inch hose is also included in the box.

It is recommended that large media is used with the reactor to make sure that it can’t get through the strainer. I took several pictures of different types of media beside the cone strainer to give you all an idea how thin the slots are.

With the Bulk Reef Supply ROX 0.8 GAC (not recommended for the reactor):

With the Bulk Reef Supply High Capacity GFO (not recommended for the reactor):

With the Bulk Reef Supply Lignite (Large Particle) GAC (best for the reactor):

I’m sure you all want to see how it performs. I really wanted to push the reactor by using a small pump with a huge amount of BRS Large Particle Lignite. Here’s a video of the reactor in action:

From the video, notice that the GAC tumbles nicely inside the reactor even by using only a small pump. However, some of the GAC at the the bottommost part of the reactor seem to be not moving. It looks like this is mainly due to the small pump that I’m using, and there is not enough horizontal force to move the GAC at the sides.

Also, note that the bottom cone strainer is fixed at the bottom. My primary concern at first was what if large particle detritus make their way from the sump to the reactor and start clogging the thin slots. When I was adding GAC however, I did notice that some really fine media did pass the strainer and when I was adding water to rince the GAC, I just slightly tilted the reactor and all the finer granules were flushed out of the bottom.

All in all, the Reef Octopus Media Filter looks like a great product. The build quality is excellent, and it solves the main problem of clogged foam pads since obviously it doesn’t use any. This means that media will tumble longer and more effectively inside the reactor. Note that this reactor will only take in larger particle media so if you have a huge stock of BRS ROX 0.8 GAC, you might want to use them all up before getting the reactor, and switch to the BRS large particle Lignite GAC. One thing I want improved on its next iteration is, well, seeing how well the Super Reef Octopus Biopellet Reactor tumbles biopellets, what I want to see is a hybrid media reactor product with the biopellet cone bottom and the a Reef Octopus Media Filter cone filter at the top — perhaps Reef Octopus can release a cone filter cup for their biopellet reactor.

In any case, I will try to post a follow up post in a week or so to see if any clumping or a reduction in flow occurs.

I hope you all enjoyed my review.

Oh, the Reef Octopus Media Reactor comes is two models:

MF-1000: 3.5″ Diameter x 21″ Tall — $100
MF-2000: 4.5″ Diameter x 21″ Tall — $110

Several online retailers are selling them already but for some reason, their stock images look a bit different from the one that I got. Some show the reactor foam pads rather than cone strainers and some shows the top doesn’t come with a ball valve. I hope Coral Vue can clarify.

Vertex Aquaristik just announced that their upcoming Vertex Cerebra controller will be released to beta testers by the end of March.

When the first news about the Vertex Cerebra came out at ReefBuilders, I had a hard time conceptualizing a stand alone product with a 7-inch screen. I even posted the following:

I don’t see the logic in this. In the age of iPhones, iPads, web browsers, and web-connected TVs, why create a separate standalone product that add additional expense to the hobbyist?

Well, eight months later, it seems like a lot has changed and things have become much clearer. The Vertex Cerebra will actually be a custom built Android (yup, Google’s mobile operating system) Froyo (2.2) device with a 3.5-inch touch screen display. It will support several wireless connectivity standards like WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G (GSM), and even Zig-Bee. It will have an embedded web server built-in so you can access it anywhere over the internet. Firmware update is even automatic and OTA (over-the-air).

What can it monitor and control? A lot! — PH, ORP, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, humidity, and dissolved and ambient CO2 to name a few. It even looks like Vertex is coming out with a range of “V-Chrome colorimeter” products that will let you monitor and control calcium, magnesium, etc. It will also definitely control other Vertex products like their Illumina and Illumilux LED lighting, Libra dosing system, and an upcoming V-Cam wireless camera module.

Additional modules for PWM, 6 and 8 controllable outlet modules, air and fluid meters and regulators, Par/Lux meters, optical and mechanical level sensors, leak detectors, etc.

Since the Cerebra is running Android, you can purchase and install additional apps from the Vertex App-Store. If you are an Android developer, create custom apps for the Cerebra and sell or share them at the store as well.

As a mobile and reef enthusiast, these are the kinds of devices I am waiting for and I’m hyped! I just wish that it will be affordable for the hobbyist when it hits the stores sometime June.

Now, to find out how to get in that beta testing group…

Full press release after the break:

Vertex Aquaristik™ announces the launch of beta test phase of Cerebra

Cologne, Germany—February 17th, 2011—Vertex™ revolutionary Cerebra will be released to beta testers before the end of March. Twenty testers have been carefully chosen to assist with field trials after extensive in-house evaluations and debugging of the firmware.

“This process has been set in place to further collect input from users working with the production model Cerebra. We have had many aquarists involved with this project in the past 2 years however it was important to us to go through this last step prior to release.” Said Andreas Schneider, CSO of Vertex™ Technologies of Austria.

Vertex Aquaristik™ has decided to once again shift perspective from the industry-norms and boldly pursue their vision of an “Aquarium Controller”. In which simple commands of switch on/switch off and timer cycles are entirely replaced with a new concept and mentality of “Collect, process and act”. A complete simulated cyber environment interlinked with your system, operated by task specific dedicated apps, possibly created by the very user.

Welcome to V-CYBER SPACE.

Aquarist will no longer be bound by a few simple bench marks such as photoperiod and or acceptable PH range. Introduction of complete autochthonous ecological simulation will enable the creator to duplicate the conditions of specimen’s true habitat in real life.

Another distinct aspect of Cerebra is to create a virtual network of aquarist that allows free flow of information, techniques and or methods. For years the best source of information on aquatic knowledge has been a handful of Internet forums. As valuable as they have been the evolution is here.

Imagine designing a species specific breeding station for fish, inverts or any other specimen to be as easy as downloading an app to mimic the environment at which the said animal breeds and thrives. Would it be periodic thermal deviations, photoperiod, flow, concentration of food and nourishments…

Imagine trouble shooting your favorite brand of skimmer by watching a video on how to accomplish this task only a few centimeters away from the said device.

Imagine…, or simply experience all that though Cerebra.

We invite all users to further enrich the Vertex™ virtual community with new insights by sharing thoughts, know-hows and knowledge, or in short; by writing apps. One can say; the aquarium hobby has finally claimed its place in the cyber space.

If you have been looking for a pump for your two- (or three-) part system, or other liquid supplements, well, a new peristaltic pump has entered the market — the AquaHouse Aquarium Dosing Pump.

What’s unique with the new AquaHouse dosing pump is it has its own controller built-in! It lets you specify the amount of liquid to dose (from 1ml to 99ml) at a specific time interval (once every hour up to once every 9 days). It also comes with a calibration feature as well to make sure that the dosing is kept precise.

Up to three pumps can be daisy-chained to share one power supply. The pumps also have magnets at the sides so they can be held together as one unit.

The pump will be selling for about $85 (with the power supply) and $79 for each additional pump (without the power supply). Some of the popular online shops should have them soon.

Check out the AquaHouse Aquarium Dosing Pump product page at Coral Vue, as well as the User’s Manual.

ReefBuilders recently posted an article about Sylvania, maker of aquarium T5 flourescent lights for both ATI and Korallen Zucht, formally confirming that there is indeed a difference between the KZ Fiji Purple, and the newer and less expensive ATI Purple Plus. How different? Sylvania quite understandably wouldn’t give specifics of their clients’ products. They just responded that the two lamps “aren’t identical.”

So, I decided to look for the actual spectrum graph for each brand. While the ATI makes all their T5 bulb spectrum graph readily available in their website (click on each type of bulb), it’s almost impossible to find KZ’s. It’s a good thing that Practical Coral Farming has a page about T5 spectrums and they did find one for the KZ Fiji Purple. Note that PCF themselves are not sure of the authenticity of the graph, but for this experiment, let’s just say that the KZ Fiji Purple spectrum graph that they have, is somewhat correct.

Here is the spectrum for the ATI Pruple Plus:

Here is the spectrum for the KZ Fiji Purple. Note that the graph doesn’t look too exact as it uses curves to average between points:

With some photoshop magic, here are the two graphs together (red line is KZ Fiji Purple):

What is interesting is, even by doing several image manipulations (resizing both veritically and horizontally), we can see that the peaks for purple, blue, and green are almost identical. The difference between the two is obvious however — the red spectrum. The KZ Fiji Purple has a lot of red into it, while the ATI Purple Plus has significantly almost none (has higher orange though).

I wish I had both bulbs with me so I can take a good side by side pics. In any case, a comment on the orginal RB article seems to sum it up correctly: “…I have both, and I have to say that they definitely look different to me. The KZ has more of a reddish tint than the ATI, while the ATI seems to lean more towards an actual purple/violet.”

Which is better? I’ll leave that for you guys to decide.

Dosing organic carbon has become a popular technique in reducing nitrates and phosphates in reef tanks. Basically, by constanly supplying an organic carbon source to a reef tank, it encourages bacteria to grow and reproduce rapidly. Because of this, nutrients in the water (including nitrates and phosphates) are used up and thus lowering their levels. I have been carbon dosing (vodka) since August 2009 — I know it works.

A new kind of organic carbon product came out late 2009 — biopellets (solid organic carbon pellets). Due to its popularity, other companies started manufacturing and selling their own biopellets, and by the end of 2010, there were so many different biopellet products in the market.

Hobbyists started using their media reactors for biopellets only to find out that to make the biopelelts more effective it should keep tumbling and not clump up and clog inside the reactor. DIYers started modding their reactors, removing the foam pads and replacing them with circular plastic meshes. A stronger pump was needed to keep the pellets tumbling. Then came biopellet reactors.

I have been waiting for a good biopellet reactor to reaplce my vodka dosing routine. When GBD blogged about the upcoming reactor from LSS Laboratory and Reef Octopus, I was all over it. Well, I finally got one and here are my impressions.

The Super Reef Octopus biopellet reactor actually comes in three sizes. What I purchased was the BR-110 800ml biopellet capacity model which is 4.3-inches in diameter and 14.5-inches tall. My order came in a white box that had a Coral Vue (the primary US distributor) sticker at the upper right. The reactor was neatly packed.

I was wondering what pump to use for the reactor but except for the labels outside the box and a paper that showed parts and assembly instructions, there were no other reading materials like operating manual and warranty card inside the box.

Except for the plumbing parts, the reactor comes almost fully assembled. It comes with true union connectors for both water input and output. I’m a fan of true unions as it makes it easy to screw/unscrew the connected hoses, without (re)moving the pump in your sump.

Thumb screws at the top make it easy to open the reactor. A rubber o-ring where the lid settles makes it leak-free.

The middle PVC tubing slides on to the lid. A rubber o-ring on the tubing makes fit tightly to the lid and keeps the pumped water travel the long tube.

Another component of the reactor is the mesh cup that slides though the middle tubing. The mesh is made of like nylon netting material and is fine enough for the pellets to not pass through. The cup sits on an acrylic ridge built on to the chamber.

The most important feature of the reactor is the ‘fluidizing’ cone bottom which evenly disperse water upward from all sides. Because of the cone, there should be no dead spots and clumping.

I’m sure you are eager to see how the reactor performs so I shot a short video of it in action:

While the reactor looks great and seems to work perfectly, there are some problems I have noticed. Frist, and there must be a reason to this, the mesh cup was created to be shorter so as to not be flush to the lid. When you start pumping water in the reactor, there is a tendency for the water to push the cup up, hovering it above its seat. When adding biopellets to water for the first time, you can’t help for some pellets to float due to maybe some tiny airpockets trapped inside the pellets. Some also cling to micro bubbles when you first start the pump. In any case, when these pellets float up and settle between the cup and its seat, trapping them there. You can probably shake the whole reactor to have the pellets fall, but surely, this will become a problem everytime new pellets are added.

Second, because the middle tubing is fitted to the lid, it can be a challenge to replenish biopellets without lifting the tubing slightly. Lifting the tubing will mean a problem re-seating it back to the bottom of the reactor without squishing pellets or avoiding pellets to enter the tube. Stirring the the pellets with the tubing helped, but I’m sure several pellets made their way inside the tube. If they get pushed out when I start the pump then great, but what if they get stuck inside and restrict the flow, worse add dead spots?

Aside from the two problems I noted, the reactor seems like it’s doing its main job perfectly — keep the pellets tumbling and avoid clumping, no foam pads to avoid clogs, and no need to use expensive pumps to keep the pellets tumbling. If you are into biopellets, then this is a great reactor to get.

The Super Reef Octopus Biopellet Reactors come in three models:

Check this out. AVAST Marine Works, known for their affordable DIY skimmer and media reactor kits, is coming our with a new DIY/pre-assembled product — the AVAST ozone reactor. Basically, the way it works is water and ozone (O3) gets mixed through a Venturi and the fine droplets get get sprayed into a sealed distribution plate. The mixture then passes through AVAST’s in-house manufactured bio-bale (from Virgin HDPE) specifically made for ozone reactor use, for maximum contact time.

AVAST has incorporated a plug and play approach to maintain the correct back pressure, so no one has to fiddle with and valves and keep the operating pressure inside the reactor at 3psi. However, a flow meter is included to measure the correct airflow/ozone delivery and to easily dial in the optimal mix ratio.

Three sizes will be offered and will be available via DIY or pre-assembled. The pre-assemled reactors will be released first sometime mid-February. Expect the prices between $200 and $300.

NanoCustoms is coming out with a new LED Driver Enclosures that will surely become a hit with LED lighting DIYers. The first in the series is the NanoCustoms Duo 700 — a dual channel LED controller that can run up to 15 x 3w LEDs per channel at 700mA (thus the name). What’s unique about the controller is, each channel comes with a 3-way rocker switch that allows the option of manual dimming via a a slider or programmable dimming (0-10v) using a reef controller. It’s nicely packaged in an in-house milled annodized unibody aluminum housing. Check out the demo videos:

NanoCustoms has informed me to expect variations of their LED driver enclosure products. Expect to see the Uno, Duo, and Trio in 700mA and 1050mA varations.

Until recently, DIY LED reef folks have been using drivers from Meanwell. NanoCustoms however secured a deal with Thomas Research Products (TRP) to become the exclusive distributor of TRP drivers for the aquarium world. Expect to see the TRP drivers (update: now available) and TRP controlled fixture products from NanoCustoms soon.

You can now pre-order the NanoCustoms Duo 700 over at NanoTuners, NanoCustom’s retail storefront. It’s $119.95 for a limited time (regular price will be $139.95) and you can reserve one for $25 plus the shipping fee.
