Training for new volunteers at Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) will be Tuesday, April 22, from 5-9 pm, at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, downtown San Diego. MCC is a federal jail housing both men and women inmates. Currently, we have two teams ministering there on Monday nights.

Volunteer training for this facility is only held once a year, so anyone interested should respond quickly. There are limited openings.

You must be:
21 years of age.
Free from any criminal felony convictions.
Have a letter of endorsement from an organization like Shadow Mountain.
Able to commit to regular volunteering.
Have a valid Identification, i.e., driver's license, passport.

Outside Ministry – Saturday, March 29th 9:30 AM – 11 AM
Outside Ministry will be flexible to meet your availability.

Inside Ministry – Saturday, March 29th 9:30 AM – 11 AM And April 7th 5 PM to 9 PM. for security training at Donovan State Prison if you have not already been cleared you must attend this training.

Inside Ministry will take place on Tuesdays somewhere between 9 AM and 5 PM. and Saturdays. Specific hours are not determined yet.

You can help with this by donating homemade cookies.

Cookies will be collected on Sunday, April 6, and Sunday April 13, at Shadow Mountain, at the Prison Ministry table in the Pavilion.

The cookies should be placed in clear, zip lock bags.

If you want to donate, but d not attend Shadow Mountain, you can drop off the cookies at the Shadow Mountain Family Ministry Building Monday - Friday, April 7-11, 9-4 pm. Please leave them in the name of Thomas Heyer.

What is Kairos Ministry?
Kairos Prison Ministry International, Inc. is the parent organization of a body of ministries addressing the spiritual needs of incarcerated men, women and children, to their families and to those who work in the prison environment. Kairos sprang from the Cursillo movement and is supported by volunteers from Cursillo and those other movements that consider Cursillo as their root. Although a separate ministry, Kairos has received the blessing and encouragement of 4th Day movements such as Cursillo, National Episcopal Cursillo, Presbyterian Cursillo, Lutheran Via de Cristo, The Upper Room's Walk To Emmaus, and independently ecumenical Tres Dias. Kairos Prison Ministry is a ministry rather than a movement.

Kairos is a ministry of the church ... a ministry of the apostles whom Jesus, the Christ, has called into community and sent forth into the environment of the correctional institution. Kairos has been called the best example of the early church in existence today.

Kairos Inside Ministry is well organized and has well-trained volunteer teams of men and women from the communities surrounding an institution that present an introductory 3-day weekend, described as a short course in Christianity. This inter denominational team of volunteers both clergy and laypersons works in cooperation with the Chaplain who carefully selects up to 42 inmate leaders to attend. A well-organized follow up program is part of this ministry.

The mission of the Kairos Prison Ministry is to bring Christ's love and forgiveness to all incarcerated individuals, their families and those who work with them, and to assist in the transition of becoming a productive

In our continuing effort to create a collaborative community think tank we invite you to an informative breakfast meeting on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Second Chance. This is the second meeting of our Advisory Board, a group formed to advocate collectively for policy reforms intended to reduce poverty, homelessness, incarceration and substance abuse. Attached is an overview of the Second Chance Advisory Board.

At our inaugural meeting in November, Dr. Robert Ross, President of the California Endowment, discussed how community based organizations can help ameliorate escalating incarceration problems and their related public health effects. At our meeting on March 18, San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis will address what she thinks is necessary to reduce recidivism and its related incarceration problems.

Ms. Dumanis’ discussion is a great opportunity for the Second Chance Advisory Board to discuss prisoner reentry reform. We welcome your participation, and urge you to attend.

Prison Fellowship also has the below volunteer opportunities at Donovan in priority order.

1. Celebrate Recovery Inside (Christ-centered 12 Step program): four men needed to help start up Celebrate Recovery in Yard 3 on Saturdays 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Experience with recovery programs is required for two of the four men. The other two don't need to have recovery experience but just a heart for recovery and the inmates.

2. Inside Coaches: mature Christian men who will meet monthly one on one with an inmate from PF's Transformational Discipleship & Reconciliation program at RJD Yard 5.

3. Celebrate Recovery Inside: two men who will help with the already established Christ-centered 12-Step program in Yard 1 on Mondays 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Another Kairos will be taking place in April, April 17-20, at Donovan
State Prison

There are five (5) ways you can be involved:

(1) Begin praying for this ministry, pray for the team that will be
going in, pray for the preparations that must take place,
pray for the training of team members, pray for the men who will be
participating, and pray that the Prison yards will
remain open during this time.

(2) Be a team member. Team training meetings will start Saturday,
March 1, 8 am, and proceed every Saturday until the Kairos event.
Some are held at First Methodist Church in Mission Valley, others
will be held at Donovan itself. Team members must be able to attend
all training.

(3) Come and observe the Closing Meeting on Sunday, March 20, 1 pm, to see the power and effectiveness of this ministry. You must fill
out an application and be cleared to enter Donovan that day. Your application must be in by March 16. We have applications we can send you.

(4) Be a letter writer for Kairos. Some of you have done this and know what it involves. We have guidelines to help.

(5) Donate "Homemade Cookies" for Kairos. The cookies must be Homemade, placed in clear zip lock bags, two dozen to a bag. We will
collect donated cookies at Shadow Mountain on only two Sundays, April 6, and April 13, at the Prison Ministry Table in the Pavilion from 8:30 am
to 12 pm.

If you do not attend Shadow Mountain, but would like to donate cookies, you can drop them off during the weeks of March 31-April 4
and April 7-11, 9 am to 4 pm. Make sure you put Tom Heyer, Prison Ministry on your donation.

If you would like to explore the possibility of serving Prison Fellowship in a leadership role, there will be an informational meeting on Tuesday, January 29th at my office in El Cajon (190 E. Douglas Ave., El Cajon, 92020), at 6:30 pm.

Angel Tree Camp on Feb. 15-17, 2008

We will be having our next Angel Tree Camp on Feb. 15-17, 2008. this camp is for children of inmates, 12-15 years old. We also need counselors/mentors to go to the camp (Counselors/mentors go free).

If you know of a young person who has at least one parent incarcerated, and is 12-15 years old, please contact me on details on how they can go to this camp free of charge.

Ministry Opportunity Inmate Dress Outs

We have been able to begin a new area of ministry by supplying "Dress Outs" for inmates who request them. "Dress Outs" are a set of clothes given to the inmate just prior to release. We have a team in place and we have been providing "dress outs" on a limited basis for the past 3 months. Please join us in prayer for this new area of ministry.

We have some specific needs for this ministry:

We need good, clean shirts, men's sizes Medium & Large ( We need 7 at
this time).

We need good, clean jackets, Medium, Large, Extra Large & 2Extra large.

We are also looking for metal shelving that stands about 7' high.

We have a small space 10' by 7', at SMCC to store our clothing.

If you can help with any of these needs, please contact me.

We want to be very clear on this. I cannot use large donations of clothing. We have no way to store it, nor sort it out. We only need specific items mentioned above.

We are going into 2 prisons in Huntsville, TX, Riker’s Island (New York), and Calipatria in CA. e have had some opposition in California, but it seems to have been overcome. This is a very powerful presentation. Please pray for the harvest tomorrow evening as we present this life-changing story to a lot of inmates. And, also, pray for the teammates going in as part of the presentation. This is a joint venture in Texas between the movie producers and the Great Adventure Weekend International. It has been our desire for some time now to gather everyone together and simply worship the Lord Jesus Christ and acknowledge all that He is doing through all of us in Prison Ministry! To start this new tradition off right, we have invited Mark Earley to be with us and share from God’s Word. Mark is the President and CEO of Prison Fellowship. November 17th, 5:30 PM, In His Steps Annual Dinner Auction and Fund-raiser, the fund-raiser will be held at Mountain View Community Church located on the corner of Ash and 78. The cost for the dinner is $8 for adults $5 for children. IHS lost two houses and a mobile home on their property. They also lost a storage room that was housing all their auction items for their annual fundraiser to take place on November 17th, 2007 at 5:30 PM. The Director, Bob Denny and his wife are now housing fourteen women in their own home until they can secure a rental for the women that were burned out of their transitional home. January 25th, Re-Entry Prison and Jail Ministry 2008 Celebration Dinner. The dinner will be held at College Avenue Baptist Church located at 4747 College Avenue, San Diego, CA 92115. We will be blessed by the music ministry of Donny Lovett ex-offender, and hearing testimonies from Donny and Marty Angelo also an ex-prisoner and the author of "Once Life Matters". Karios Ministry Opportunity

Another Kairos Ministry will be taking place the weekend of Oct. 18-21 at Donovan State Prison. A team of some 25-30 people will be going into the prison and sharing the love of Christ with inmates there. They are allowed to bring in homemade cookies.

We will be collecting homemade cookie donations over the next 3 Sundays: Sept. 30, Oct. 7, and Oct. 14. We urge you to help us out in this endeavor. We need lots of cookies. They must be homemade, any kind, and placed in clear, zip lock bags. Just bring them to the Prison Ministry Table in the Pavilion at Shadow Mountain on Sunday, Sept. 30, Oct 7, or Oct. 14, and place them in the boxes provided.

If you cannot bring them on any of those Sundays, but want to donate, just bring your donation of cookies to the Family Ministry Building at Shadow Mountain during the weekdays, Monday-Friday, 9am to 4 pm, and leave them in my name, Tom Heyer.

The next training for volunteers at Donovan State Prison is Sunday,
September 16, from 1 to 5 pm.
This training is open to both men and women.

The next training for new volunteers at Metropolitan Correctional
Center (MCC) will be
in late October or early November.

We need new volunteers for all of our teams going into Donovan and MCC.

Due to an unforeseen conflict, the date of the VIP Training in Murrieta has been changed from the 15th to the 29th of September – so all of you who said “oh, darn, I can’t make the 15th” – can now plan to be there! The new flyer is attached. Please print and distribute to your groups.

I know everyone has other things they would rather do with a Saturday, but if you, or someone on your team, feels that God is calling them to be a part of what’s happening with Prison Fellowship right now – now is the time. I probably will not be able to host another training until after the first of the year due to Angel Tree.

Leaders, you need to stress to your teams how important this training is for anyone in prison ministry. Also, for anyone planning to be a part of the Transformational Discipleship & Reconciliation programs at RJD, Centinela or Rainbow, this is mandatory.

I need your RSVP as soon as possible. If I can be there on my son’s birthday – you can be there! :o)

Just a reminder that our first prayer and equipping ministry meeting is this Saturday, September 8th, 2007 at 9:30 AM. It will be held at Canyon Community Church located at 610 Paseo del Rey in Chula Vista, CA 91910. The meeting will be designed to pray for those whom you are working with in prison and jail and also to support you practically with your ministry to those who are incarcerated.
