It’s the end of an era, as in the next 48 hours the infamous Facebook gifts will cease to be a commodity. Earlier, Facebook announced that it will shut down the gifts feature so the company could spend its valuable development resources on more important sections of the social network. Even the most popular website in the universe has to do some cutbacks, go figure!

The official deadline for sending gifts is set to the day after tomorrow, August 1st 2010, but Facebook promises that all received gifts will forever remain visible on user profiles as some sort of collector’s items. So if you want a piece of Facebook history, now would be the time to send yourself some free gifts.

Earlier this week, Kanye West stopped by the Facebook HQ in Palo Alto, California, to offer a preview of some brand new songs on his upcoming album (presumably called “Good Ass Job”). He performed the raps a capella while standing on a table in front of tons of Facebook employees. And even though the rapper asked the staffers to turn off their phones, at least two videos ended up on YouTube (see below). No hard feelings though, as Kanye posted the following message on his blog after his visit:

To all my friends at Facebook,

Many times in life I’ve had to deal with moments of doubt. And as it’s been a minute since I’ve performed any fresh material in front of an audience, this could’ve been one of those moments… but it wasn’t. As some of you have probably noticed, Facebook recently started to prohibit links to our site, meaning that for the time being you cannot share any of our articles or our main page on your wall or as a comment. Because the first appearance of this issue coincided with a referral to our site on the extremely popular Mashable blog a few weeks ago, we suspect that Facebook’s spam prevention systems falsely identified our site as “abusive or spammy” as soon as thousands of Mashable readers suddenly started to share it with their friends. Ever since, users get the following message:

Message failed – This message contains blocked content that has previously been flagged as abusive or spammy. Let us know if you think this is an error.

Obviously, this is an error and one that has a considerable, negative impact on the growth of our site. Another side effect is that people cannot like “Like” our pages on the site itself. Clicking the red “Error” link that appears everywhere shows the message that “This page has been disabled due to abuse reports.“

If you would like to take a minute to help us out, follow these simple instructions to request to have this block lifted from Facebook:

1. Try to share our URL (http://reface.me) on Facebook, for instance as a status update, or in a comment.
2. In the pop-up message that appears when you try to post the link, click the “Let us know” link and tell Facebook our site ain’t hurting a fly!
3. Using the form, briefly tell them the type of content you are blocked from posting (eg. website, blog, or article), the URL (http://reface.me) and the reason why the block should be lifted (eg. harmless site, useful blog, no spam)
4. Complete the captcha security check and hit “Submit”.

These steps literally take only a minute to complete. Thanks so much for your time and support! Oh, and if your name happens to be Caroline Ghiossi and you’re an associate on Facebook’s user operation team, can you pretty please just manually enable our site again?

By the way, if you’re a fellow blogger or website owner experiencing the same problem, we have found that using an URL shortener like bit.ly allows you to spread your link as long as you disable the auto-retrieved content before submitting it. It’s an unelegant workaround, but at least you can still get your links out there pending your unblockage.

We addressed Facebook’s severe lack of proper relationship statuses in an earlier post, and with your help even suggested a bunch of new ones. Today we came across a Facebook group created by Eric Stob, a Microsoft employee nota bene, who’s championing “polyamory” as a relationship type. Eric’s current status, “In an Open Relationship”, is too vague for him and doesn’t allow to identify each member of his harem his partners. So through a petition, the Don Juan is hoping to convince the social networking site to allow multiple relationships (“is Polyamorous with…”).

At the time of writing, 444 people had joined the group. Impressive, but hardly enough to grab Facebook’s attention. So we searched for an instant workaround and found an application called Lovers which expands the relationship options in Facebook. The Lovers app allows you to proclaim your versatile relationships in different ways:

In the episode, dubbed “Loan-A Lisa,” Lisa decides to help fund Nelson’s new bike company. While attending an entrepreneurs convention, the two encounter Zuckerberg, who reminds the kids just how many famous billionaires — including himself — have dropped out of school. The rest of the plot is a secret, but we’re pretty sure Zuckerberg then steals their idea for the bike company and ends up making another billion dollars.

The episode will air in October 2010.

You don’t have to be a hardcore gamer to have heard of Space Invaders, the 1978 video game in which the player has to defeat waves of aliens with a mobile laser cannon. The arcade game classic has since been cloned, re-released, parodized, and even turned into street art. An Amercian designer, Logan Walters, took the widely recognized alien enemy and remixed it into various characters merely by changing the colors of its pixels. We liked it so much, we took his “Many Faces of a Space Invader” poster and turned it into a Tag your Friends picture for Facebook. Facebook is killing off the Facebook Gifts feature and will close its Gift Shop on August 1st, 2010. While gifts have been the subject of plenty of mockery (and rightfully so, they’re only virtual!), the given reason is pretty lame and that’s exactly why we call FAIL on them:

We made the decision after careful thought about where we need to focus our product development efforts. We’ll be able to focus more on improving and enhancing products and features that people use every day, such as Photos, News Feed, Inbox, games, comments, the “Like” button and the Wall.

It’s hard to believe that a company like Facebook does not have enough manpower to manage a simple feature like this, which is by the way a multi-million dollar revenue stream. Who says no to easy money? They’ve also proven to be a great marketing tool for the promotion of movies, cars, and other products.

The little virtual goods won’t disappear altogether though…

The gifts you’ve already received on your Wall will remain visible, and you still will be able to view your sent and received gifts on your gifts page.

You have until the end of the month to eternalize a gift on your wall. Check the related articles below for some free ones. And your existing gift credits, if any, are automatically converted to Facebook Credits.

As an alternative, they recommend using one of the many third-party gift applications for giving and receiving gifts (eg. Birthday Cards, Hallmark Social Calendar, Pieces of Flair and someecards).
