Maybe it’s because our site’s mascot is blue, but a lot of our readers seem to love the Avatar movie. Unfortunately, many of you started to experience problems with McDonald’s Avatarize Yourself application never getting past 64% or 80% while processing the image. The bad news is it seems to be a persistent bug for the past few weeks and we have no idea if it’s going to be fixed anytime soon. The good news is we’ve found an alternative, free “Avatarizer” called Become an Avatar. Here’s how it works:

You start by uploading a photo from your hard drive or taking a live snapshot using your webcam. Or you could connect with Facebook to grab your current profile picture, but don’t bother doing this if that’s not a portrait photo facing the camera with a neutral expression and your mouth closed (and usually, it isn’t). Although the advantage of this Avatar generator compared to the older one, is that it’s less picky about the source image. Now tick the box to agree with the Terms of Use, enter your name and gender and hit the NX (Next) button.

On the following screen, you’ll have to drag, resize and rotate your image so that your eyes and mouth fit within the yellow guidelines. Click the next button again and adjust the targets by dragging them onto your eyes, the tip of your nose and the center of your mouth. Click NX again. For the best results, make the brightness and contrast of your image similar to the one of the avatar. On the next screen, you can personalize your avatar with gear, jewelry or face paint (yes, even men can select this). Afterwards, you can choose the Na’vi haircut of your choice. In a final step, you can select one of four Pandora backdrops.

Next thing you know you’re given a Na’vi name (ours was Chok’ti) and you’re presented with your Na’vi avatar in front of an animated background. To download your avatar and, for instance, use it as your profile picture, click “Download” and then “Save”. If you want to show it off to your friends immediately, click “Share” followed by the little Facebook button.

Last week we told you about a Facebook application that allowed you to use emoticons in your Facebook statuses and wall posts. Unfortunately for the many users of Status Emoticons and similar applications, the Facebook Platform Policy Team has removed the emoticon functionality “in an effort to improve the user experience on the platform”. It seems that previously posted statuses containing emoticons remain intact, but applications are now unable to post new messages containing the cute, little graphics.

Granted, hundreds of animated emoticons all over your news feed wouldn’t exactly be easy on the eyes. And aren’t in-your-face-graphics the reason why so many of us fled far away from MySpace? But still, a bit of color and joy wouldn’t harm the “dull” text status updates we have now, would it? What’s your take on it? Did they make the right decision in blocking emoticons from status updates and wall posts?

Facebook is coming to a store near you! Starting Sunday, September 5th, gift cards with Facebook Credits will be available at Target’s 1,750 retail stores and at Target.com according to USA Today.

At launch, the $15, $25 and $50 gift cards can be used to buy premium items in over 150 free Facebook games and applications by developers such as Zynga, PopCap Games, Electronic Arts and CrowdStar, but by the end of the year Facebook expects the credits to work with thousands of games. Here’s a list of free games and applications that currently support Facebook Credits as of September 5th 2010:

A few months ago, we Googled for the programming information of one of our fave television series, Dexter, and in the top search results was a Google News item with a headline that blatantly mentioned which cast member got killed in the season 4 finale. EPIC FAIL. We hadn’t seen the episode yet.

Porting this to Facebook, it’s not hard to imagine how a friend’s status updates could completely ruin a surprise movie ending. Or maybe this happened to you already? Hey, at least it saves you a few bucks in tickets and popcorn. But Aol’s Moviefone has gone further and envisioned how certain film scenarios would become worthless and implausible if they’d taken place in the age of Facebook, post 2004. These days, you don’t need a million dollar video with Pam Anderson in it to promote your song. A single page website will do. The quirky Swedish band Fulkultur’s nailed it with their website called The Ugly Dance, which allows you to bust your virtual moves to their ridiculously catchy song with the same name. Just upload a photo of your face, zoom and tilt it a bit and choose your outfit (a striped shirt, jeans and All Stars, a pink track suit, or a fancy business suit). Next thing you know you’ll be moving and grooving with your “hind and front legs”. There are even multiple dance moves to choose from, including the stomp, grease, disco, twist, robot, and the windmill.

When you’re done, you can share your “ugly dance” on Facebook ─click the top right link─ so your friends can have a little fun with your dancing puppet. Seriously, sharing this on your wall will get you likes and comments.

Emoticons are inherent to online chat and instant messaging, but did you know you can insert emoticons into your Facebook statuses too? A Facebook application called Status Emoticon enables users to include cute, and in some cases even animated emoticons in your status updates or wall posts. And fortunately, your friends are not required to add the application in order to see them.

You can use the little pixel graphics to make rebuses, or throw a bunch of them together and have your friends guess what your combination refers to. By the way, high five to the person who guesses the reference in the screenshot above!

Just click any of the hundreds of emoticons of your choice (see the screenshot below) and they’ll be added to the WYSIWYG preview window. Before hitting the Share button, make sure you select “Update My Status” or “Post to my Friend” depending on where you want your message to end up: on your own profile or that of multiple friends.

Our imagination may run wild sometimes when it comes to analyzing logos, images and icons, but what we want to show you today is the undeniable truth. Let’s take a look at the Facebook iPhone app icon of the just launched Facebook Places feature.

As you can see in the screenshot the geolocation feature’s not available to New Yorkers yet *shrugs* but that’s not the point. Facebook’s current biggest competitor, err, “partner” when it comes to checking into places is obviously Foursquare. Now take a look at the Places icon again, and the bottom part specifically. Isn’t that a square… and those crossing roads, don’t they look an awful lot like a certain number?

Dennis Crowley, chief executive of Foursquare, has not yet responded to the logo reference, but he told the New York Times that the company will “wait to see what the product looks like, play around with it and see if its something we want to integrate with.”

Scam applications, including The Official Dislike Button and Dislikebutton, are currently luring people into completing an online survey in order to get access to a Dislike-button browser add-on that’s already freely available at Mozilla.com. According to security experts at Sophos, the rogue Facebook applications also ask premission to your profile and if granted, will post spam status updates with the purpose of spreading further:

FaceMod, the developer of the actual add-on, has no relation to the scammers who are making money from their free tool.

From CNN.com:

If you accidentally installed the fake application, click on the “account” button at the top right of the Facebook home screen. Navigate to the option that says “application settings,” and disable the fake “dislike” application.

If the app has posted to your Facebook wall, go to your profile page and delete those posts to stop the scam from spreading further. Mashable also recommends checking your “interests” and “likes” settings from the “edit my profile” menu, to be sure that the app hasn’t lodged itself there as well.

It’s not the first time that the promise of a Facebook dislike button is being used to fool people. The fake Facebook Gold account is another scam that uses the unexisting feature as a bait.
