Celebrating 100 Years of Wylie Shanks

This week saw this well established Glasgow-based architectural practice celebrate their 100th birthday with a party in one of their most prestigious buildings, the Scottish Legal Life Assurance building in Bothwell Street.

To mark this landmark occasion we were commissioned by Wylie Shanks Architects to design and produce the book ‘a centenary retrospective, 1912-2012’ which celebrates and reviews 100 years of the practice’s history.

Interactive Polar Bears to join the Superbowl this year!

The creatives at Coca-Cola must have spent a few late nights working on their new campaign for this year's Superbowl. Set to feature two of the brands polar bear mascots, the whole commercial will react to the on-field action as well as the other adverts.

The animated bears will be showing support for the competing teams - New York Giants and New England Patriots - and will give real-time reactions to everything that happens throughout the game. If the Patriots score a touchdown then you'll see the Patriots bear raise his hand for the touchdown sign, and if a racy advert appears on screen, the bear will cover its cub's eyes.

As well as an ingenious piece of advertising, Coca-Cola are using the campaign to raise money and awareness for the World Wildlife Fund to help protect the Arctic home of the polar bears.

The Langside College Online Guide 2012 went live on Monday and has seen an exceptional amount of interest and has generated over 1,000 online applications in just 3 days!

The fully online and interactive platform allows students to browse all of Langside College's courses for 2012/13 allowing the viewer to read all the relevant information, watch related career advice videos, interact with the college's social network and apply for a course online.

We've had a sneak preview of the printed document this week as it came off the press and the online version is almost ready to go live.

Facebook Goes Offline

We knew it would happen eventually, Facebook was never going to remain purely online. We've just heard the news that MOO cards have teamed up with Facebook to combine your online profile with your offline communication.

With the introduction of the Facebook Timeline , MOO will design business cards using your Facebook profile picture and the personal information from your page. Simply named "Facebook Cards", MOO are giving away 50-card bundles to the first 200,000 users with the first 50,000 receiving free shipping.

As with all new ventures, there's pros and cons involved. It's definitely a good way of maintaing a consistent brand image but is the information you share on Facebook suitable for your business card? There is always the option of changing your profile details to make them career friendly but does this dilute the primary function of social networking? Perhaps LinkedIn would have been a better option for MOO.

We won't know the answers to these questions for a while as only time will tell how successful this joint venture is. However, with the free cards only available for a short time, both companies should find out pretty soon if customers are willing to pay for the service or not.

If these new cards sound like your cup of tea, there are two ways to take advantage of the offer:

Through Facebook:

Click on the "About" tab under the basic information on your timeline. Scroll down to "Contact Info" and roll over the business card icon which will direct you to MOO's website.

Through MOO.com:

To get the free cards you still need to sign in through Facebook - which also allows you to edit the information and image which will appear on the card.

At the moment, social media is probably the most influential communication tool around. There is no better way of giving real insight into an organisation or encouraging interaction between a company and its customers. As with most companies now, not only are reflexblue on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, but most (if not all) of our clients are too.

As a result, we pay close attention to social media news and consumer reports so we were intrigued when we found a market research report by AYTM which surveyed 2000 internet users to explore how they prefer to use social media when it comes to businesses and brands.

Interestingly, 58% of respondents have "liked" a brand on Facebook compared to only 39% who have tweeted about them. The survey also looked at the type of content consumers prefer to receive from their favourite brands with 80% preferring posts about coupons, promotions and discounts compared to only 8% preferring to read about brand information.

Like many other reports, this highlights the importance of consumers feeling they are getting something back for being a fan on Facebook or a follower on Twitter. With so many companies now using social platforms to connect with their customers, it's vital that they understand what their followers are looking for. It is simply not enough to bombard them with disguised sales chat.

reflexblue's Christmas Night Out

Our Christmas night out was in two parts this year, with the boys off to Liverpool and the girls opting for dinner at Firebird and a few drinks elsewhere. Diving straight into the Christmas spirit, we donned some festive head wear and partied the night away in the Avalon with Rod Stewart (well, kind of!).

We were later joined by the rest of the team who provided some light entertainment in the form of "Brian Masks", carrot cake with sour fruit pastels on top and some random music choices!

The majority of the pictures taken in Liverpool weren't suitable for the blog but here's one of Creative Director Brian Wishart enjoying his Tennents on the train.

If you think this photo looks a bit weird then you'd be right. It's not actually Brian at all as he wasn't able to go. To make sure he didn't miss out on any of the fun, the boys made a mask of his face and took him all the way to Liverpool.

There was good reason for this visit however, as we were shooting an interactive 360° view from the centre circle which will give a unique perspective to visitors of the new website.

It doesn’t seem that long ago we were wowed by QR codes and the possibilities they held for interactive advertising. By allowing customers to learn more about a brand by simply scanning these codes, businesses began to link their websites, promotions and new products to their prints ads.

Just as people were beginning to get their heads around this concept, QR codes - according to Gabriel Beltrone at Adweek - “are being threatened with obsolescence by a gang of ambitious new startups” and Aurasma is the ringleader.

While the buzz about augmented reality has been building for a while, Aurasma is the first app that’s really done the job properly. Described as a visual browser that integrates the physical and virtual world, Aurasma is capable of delivering a 3D brand experience which has been likened to elements typical of Sci-fi films (and the newspapers in Harry Potter!).

We’re more than a little chuffed about being the first design agency in Scotland to feature this ground-breaking technology in one of our latest campaigns. The Aurasma “A” symbol was first rolled out on a Taylor Wimpey advert that featured in the ESPC and we’re looking forward to gauging consumer interaction. "Be Ready For Winter" with the NHS and reflexblue

Having worked closely with the NHS 24 for a few years now, we were delighted when they asked us to be involved with their “Be Ready for Winter” campaign. We designed and produced some really effective props for the launch which helped deliver some fantastic shots for the campaign. The slopes at Xscape in Braehead were used to provide a fantastic backdrop for the shoot.

It was a very successful shoot all round and it gained great coverage for the campaign. You can watch the video here.

Google Doodles

Since it's launch in 1998, Google has reflected world events in the styling of their logo. Now synonymous with the brand, over 1000 "Google Doodles" as they are now known, have graced the search engine. Today's art work was to commemorate the French physicist - Louis Daguerre - who is credited with inventing the first commercially successful form of photography - daguerreotype.

Behavioural Targeting with My Car Check

Behavioural targeting enables organisations to target audiences based on their recent online activity. Page views and search terms are monitored then broken down into various channels which are then analysed and used to create a virtual profile of each user. This provides a higher ROI by targeting customers who are already in the market for your product or service.

We recently put this into practice with My Car Check, and although this is just the beginning of our campaign, we have gained some impressive results from behavioural targeting in the past with clients such as Taylor Wimpey and our very own Texty.co.uk. Google+ Update: Watch How Posts Get Shared with Ripples

There is a quiet buzz on the social media horizon that Google have opened up Google Plus to businesses. This low key launch could be down to the fact that it is only available to Google App users and it will be a good few months before they open the gates to the masses.

These are all the features we know about so far:

Hangouts with Extras provides a platform for group video chat and web conferencing and allows others to view what’s on your computer screen. You can also meet, share notes, and work on documents at the same time

Google Ripples gives a whole new meaning to sharing documents and allows interaction with everyone who receives it.

If that's not enough then it appears that Google Places , Google Maps, Google Analytics and Google AdWords will all be integrated into the service too.

While down in London this week, our business development manager, Ricki, and one of our graphic designers, Craig, did a quick dash round all the tourists sights, only stopping to take a picture at each one to prove they had actually been there.

Congratulations to our Creative Director Brian Wishart and Laura Smith who got engaged in Rhonda on 8th August. We hope the wedding day runs smoother than the day he proposed. After a nightmare journey in Spain, their car broke down on a dangerous mountain road near Rhonda before he popped the question!

Of course we celebrated in typical reflexblue style by having a few quiet drinks, and we couldn't resist turning the unusual proposal into a personalised engagement card.

The Scottish Football Museum

Reflexblue's digital agency, Cadre, were delighted to be commissioned to create a new content managed website for The Scottish Football Museum. The site has been live for a few months and we are now starting to get some impressive analytics with thousands of people visiting the site every month.

The detailed reports highlight activity on the web site and help the marketing team based at Hampden Park to tailor their marketing campaigns. The analytics allow us to see where all the web visitors come from and how long they spend on the site. So far, every month, the site has received visitors from all over the world.

We look forward to working on further projects with the team at Hampden.
