The problem with fashion is, you only realise you look like an idiot in hindsight. It happens to the best of us. Sometimes you go into the hairdressers and ask for bit of a trim and layering, but you end up with permed mullet. We have identified the top 8 haircuts not to ask for when you attempt a new look.

The Mohican

Also known as “The War Cut”, the mohican is what happens when you shave both sides of your head, leaving a strip of hair down the middle. It was designed to intimidating. It’s not. Punks used it in the early 80s, and Mr. T sported one. Are you sure you want one?

The Pony Tail

This style is far worse on men than it is on women. So don’t panic if you are a woman and have a ponytail. Historically, the ponytail was worn by women at home but not for going out in public. The hairstyle was mandatory with European armies until the early 1800s. Well done to the British army for being the first to dispense with it. Unfortunately for us, Steven Seagal single-handedly resurrected the style.

The Bowl Cut

Different countries call this hairstyle a different name. But it is quite simple. Take a bowl, put it over your head, and cut what you can. Historically the hair cut was popular among those who couldn’t afford a professional haircut. Never a good idea, just shave it off if the credit crunch is hurting your wallet.

The Beehive

What would you look like if you put a beehive on the top of your head? Also known as the B-52 for it’s resemblance to the nose of a B-52 Stratofortress bomber, the beehive plagued women since the 1950s. The beehive can be cited as the root source of big hair in following decades. Unfortunately, Amy Winehouse is doing her best to bring this look back.

The Combover

Sometimes a hairstyle is not just a hairstyle. Referred to in Japan as “Barcode style” because of the similarities between striations caused by the comb and barcodes on products. Basically, the comb-over is what happens to you when you cover the top of your head with long hair from the side of your head. It is designed to disguise baldness. Listen up, don’t even attempt it.

The Flattop

The flattop is when the hair on top of your head is completely flat. It is one of the most expensive haircuts to maintain. A flattop wearer has to get the haircut up to once a week. The haircut is popular with the US military and law enforcement officers. The flattop is versatile and can be combined with most haircuts in this list. One of the most popular variations is the “Duck’s Ass”.

The Mullet

Also known as the Hockey Haircut, and not to be mistaken with the rattail, the mullet is short in the front, top and sides… but long in the back. Ancient fishermen used the mullet to keep their necks warm(what’s wrong with a scarf?). Despite it being one of the worst haircuts in the universe, the mullet is growing in strength in many parts of middle America and Hoxton, London. Modern technology such as polaroid cameras will make sure you never forget your awful mullet. Avoid.

The Permanent Wave

The permanent wave, aka the perm seemed like a good idea for many men and women. Why? Well, curly hair seemed more attractive back then. Although we would love to lay blame on stadium rock bands of the 80s, the real culprit was Marcel Grateau. He unleashed a practical thermal method in 1872. Although his intentions were pure, hairdressers should have been warned that with great power comes great responsibility.

Male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopeciais is the most common cause of hair loss in men. Men tend to be either genetically predisposed to either lose their hair or not. We will take you through what male pattern baldness is and how it affects you.

Androgens are a group of hormones that include testosterone, androsteinedione, and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). These are typically present in greater amounts in men than women. In men diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia, the testosterone in their system binds with enzymes within the hair cell, and converts to the hair-deadening DHT. Over time, the DHT builds up in the hair follicle and causes it to shrink. This follicle then cannot produce the normal growth phases of the hair, and eventually dies.

Male pattern baldness is experienced by 7-15% of men by age 25, and nearly 40% by age 35. It is considered to be an age-related condition, and totals 95% of hair loss experienced by all men. The remaining 5% is caused by medications, underlying medical conditions, or malnutrition.

The typical pattern of male hair loss covers the top of the head, leaving the sides and back relatively untouched. Some men experience loss at the temples only. Male pattern baldness is not the same as having a receding hair line, but both can be treated in the same ways. Some men will experience male pattern baldness as early as the onset of puberty, and it may progress very rapidly or not at all.

So, since all men have high levels of androgens, how can you know if you’ll develop male pattern baldness? Taking a look at your personal gene pool will help, but is not a definitive measure. If all of the men in your family are bald, you very well may be too. However, just because none of them are doesn’t mean you don’t have the gene.

It’s important to be as proactive as possible when you start noticing hair loss. Find out what is the cause of hair loss for you. The sooner a program is started, the better results you will see. Regaine for men contains Minoxidil, the only recognized application that enables stimulation of hair follicles, and thus regrowth of hair. A gradual result, it is much more affordable and less dramatic than other hair loss treatment options. Regaine treats the cause of male pattern baldness, and because of this it seems to be the most effective over-the-counter application available today.

There are a number of different types of hair loss both men and women experience. We’ve identified the most popular types of hair loss to help you assess your situation.

Androgenetic alopecia

Androgens such as testosterone are another cause for androgenetic alopecia. This is typically only seen in men, as a large amount of testosterone is required to produce the condition. With the combination of genetics and testosterone overloading your hair follicles, male pattern baldness ensues.

Women will usually experience hair loss later in life, but men can show signs as early as puberty. Another noticeable difference is that men will typically lose the hair, and it never grows back. With women sufferers, the conditions presents as more of an extreme thinning of the hair on top of their heads.

Telogen effluvium

Telogen effluvium, so named because it affects the telogen, or rest state of hair growth, is the stress-triggering baldness factor seen in men and women. Pregnancy, death of a loved one, financial worries, work issues, and drastic weight loss will all trigger stressors in the body that affect hair follicles. Stress is the second highest cause of hair loss. When your body is stressed in such a way, your body tells the hair follicle it needs all building materials for other processes, and thus steals the necessary components to grow the hair. Luckily, when the stress disappears, the hair will usually grow back. However, it is sometimes difficult to diagnose stress as the cause, and treatment at the early stages of hair loss is recommended.

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata develops patches of baldness, and affects 1 out of 100 people. It is believed to be autoimmune in nature, affects men and women equally, and is usually seen in young adults. This condition is usually temporary, but recurrences can happen.

Traction alopecia and trichotillomania

Traction alopecia and trichotillomania are the result of excessive pulling and plucking the hair, respectively. While traction alopecia can be either temporary or permanent, the styling of the hair causing it must be stopped before the follicle is killed. Trichotillomania is typically a psychiatric problem seen in young children and teens.

Regardless of the cause of your hair loss, the effective ingredient in Regaine, minoxidil, is the only recognized treatment for stopping loss and stimulating growth. It is recommended to begin treating baldness at first signs of hair loss for best results.

Everyone has an opinion about hair loss causes and cures. It is important seperate fact from fiction, so that you can make the best informed choices for treatment. There are several myths about the causes of hair loss, and here we will take you through the most popular explanations:

Myth #8: Certain hairstyles cause hair loss.

This myth is true. If you style your hair in such a way that it is constantly pulled or strained, as in the case of ponytails or tight braiding, this can cause hair to fall out much faster than naturally inclined.

Myth #7: If your mother’s father was bald, you will be too.

This one is actually false. Baldness and thinning hair can be caused by a combination of genetic contributions, but does not come solely from the maternal side of your family. On the same token, if your father has a full head of hair, you won’t necessarily be so fortunate, and if he’s bald, you may not be.

Myth #6: Perms and dyes will cause hair loss.

This is also a false presumption. Dyeing your hair or perming it will not affect hair loss. However, they can help disguise the problem if you’re already experiencing it.

Myth #5: Shampooing several times a day will speed up hair loss.

Not true. Mother Nature will not punish you for your cleanliness. Frequent shampooing does not affect your thinning hair in any way.

Myth #4: Stressing out causes your hair to fall out.

If you’re figuratively “pulling your hair out” over stressful work or family relations, don’t bother – it will fall out on its own accord. Increased stress can kill off hair follicles that would normally remain healthy for many years. So just chill out, take a deep breath, and visualize the full head of hair you’ll have after removing the stress from your life.

Myth #3: Frequent haircuts will make your hair grow faster and longer.

Unfortunately, we’re not so lucky. Hair actually grows from the root, not the tip, so cutting has no effect on speed or strength of your hair. However, as the older hair near the ends gets overworked and brittle, cutting those off can give you the appearance of thicker hair. Removing the extra weight of extremely long hair can help with this also.

Myth #2: Wearing a hat speeds up hair loss.

Not likely, if it fits correctly. If you tend to wear a hat to cover up your baldness, you want to make sure it isn’t too tight or constricting.

Myth #1: Having a cowlick or rubbing curry on your head will prevent hair loss.

Are you serious? Old wives’ tales will absolutely not keep your hair from falling out. Claims such as this are a waste of time and good spices.

So, what can you actually do to stimulate regrowth and prevent future hair loss? Regaine is one of the only products available today with proven clinical results for men and women. Regardless of the reasons for your hair loss, you do have a choice about what to do about it from here on out. If you take action as early as possible, your results will surpass what you ever could have expected.

Hair is a symbol of beauty and youth for women, and loosing it can be extremely stressful. Hair loss is a problem which is usually associated with men, though it affects many women at some stages in their lives. The causes of hair loss in women are not all the result of aging. There have been cases where girls as young as 15 being to show signs of hair loss. We will show you some of the different reasons women lose their hair.

Our hair typically grows at the rate of ½ inch per month. After a growth phase of two to six years, the follicle then rests for two or three months. At this point, the hair falls out, and the follicle grows a new hair. This is why it’s normal to experience some hair loss on a daily basis. One reason that some women experience thinning hair is an interruption in this typical growth cycle.

Androgens

Hormones called androgens are usually the culprit in interfering with hair growth patterns. Testosterone is the most widely known androgen, but androsteinedione and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) also belong to this group. Androgens are found in large amounts in men, but smaller amounts in women. When a woman is genetically predisposed to hair loss, testosterone is actually converted to DHT in the hair cell, and then resides within the hair follicle. As time goes by, a buildup of DHT causes the natural growth and resting phases of hair to become erratic because the follicle is shrinking.

Female pattern baldness

Female pattern baldness is much different than male pattern baldness. Some cases are caused by androgens in women, but the pattern of hair loss is much different in women versus men. Women typically lose their hair in a broader area, around the entire crown of the head. Unlike men, advancing age has nothing to do with female hair loss; women may lose their hair at any point in life.

We know that women’s hair loss can cause a range of emotions, but it is important to stay calm and find the solution that works. There has been some research indicating that hormone receptors and pathways, versus the hormones themselves, are actually responsible for female hair loss. Underlying medical issues such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and autoimmune disorders may also cause hair loss as a symptom, so it’s important to get the correct diagnosis from your doctor.

Minoxidil, the active ingredient in Regaine for Women, is the only non-prescription hair loss treatment recognized as a regrowth promoter. Regardless of the cause of hair loss, continued use of Regaine will help to stimulate inactive hair follicles and replace your much-missed tresses.

Minoxidil, the main ingredient in Regaine, is a medication that causes blood vessels in the hair follicle to dilate, thus slowing or stopping hair loss and promoting hair regrowth. Noticeable changes occur after a few months of use.

The drug was first used to treat high blood pressure, but scientists and doctors noticed the beneficial side effect of reversing baldness and hair loss. Topical ointments containing minoxidil are available in either a foam or gel form, and are used by both men and women experiencing untimely hair loss. Regaine has been proven in clinical trials to stop hair loss in 4 out of 5 tested men.

Dysfunctioning hair follicles

Hair loss is a symptom of dysfunctioning hair follicles, and minoxidil directly attacks the cause. If you are proactive and begin treating the problem immediately, you can help prevent further devastation to your follicle population. Follicles that are anything but dead, meaning healthy but damaged or dormant, can be remedied. The longer you wait to treat it, the more likely the follicle will die and never be revived. Stimulating the follicle to regrow hair is a completely healthy option for treatment, and can provide permanent results with continued use. Reprogramming your follicles to renew their natural state is the safest and least expensive way to regrow hair.

The many emotional and psychological tolls of sudden hair loss can lead to other health issues when the source is not treated. Knowing you are doing everything in your power to correct your hair loss can prevent downward psyche paths. Searching for current applicable research and information is key, and finding a support group or website is a great way to share ideas and tested treatments with other sufferers.

Hair Treatment that Works

Minoxidil is one of the only two approved pharmaceutical products for the treatment of hair loss and baldness. Available without a prescription, its inclusion in Regaine gives you the privacy of at-home treatment with the confidence of a researched treatment. Unwarranted emotional effects of hair loss can easily be improved with a results-oriented approach to your treatment. In a short amount of time, you and others will notice your reversed state of appearance, and give you a much needed boost of confidence. The options available today prevent the ill declaration that hair loss is something you just have to deal with or hide.

Beautiful, thick hair makes a lot of us feel attractive and healthy. But hair loss can suddenly affect any of us, and the effects can take a remarkable toll on our mental health. People who experience hair loss often suffer emotions ranging from mild denial to deep depression. It is important to assess the situation, and make the right decisions to overcome the problem.

The Emotions

Men and women sufferers tend to connect hair loss with an overall negative assessment of age and aging values. However, women are more apt to view the issue as a negative cosmetic state, attributed to becoming an “older woman”. There still remains the stigma that some women may find bald men attractive, but never is the statement reversed. At any age, thinning hair can deflect from a person’s overall appearance, but younger sufferers find the added detriment of premature aging effects. Depending on the business you are involved in, loss of hair may be the first degree of how you are assessed by clients and coworkers. Any business activities may be a negative experience if the other person is distracted by the appearance of thinning hair.

Some people who experience baldness have learned to be completely at peace with it. For others, this is not necessarily the case. The loss of hair can feel as if your youth is escaping you, and a vital part of who you are is leaving you behind. There is some good news, however. Many options today give sufferers ways to increase their rates of hair regrowth and health, and in turn improve their psychological well-being.

By treating the cause of your emotional distress, an improvement in mental state during everyday activities can be expected. If you’re sick of feeling self-conscious about your constant hat wearing or comb-overs, it’s time to take action with hair loss treatment that works. Combining proven products with modest alteration of your grooming habits will improve your outlook and outward appearance.

Products for Hair Loss

You must first realize that your hair loss is not your fault, but rather a condition. There are plenty of groups who embrace people suffering from hair loss. It is your choice whether to live with it or to treat it. After finding out what causes hair loss, treating your condition may require steady, consistent use of good shampooing and conditioning practices to enable topical treatments to work. Regaine uses minoxidil to stimulate your hair follicles to begin producing hair, as well as preventing future loss. Minoxidil has been clinically proven to attack the source of hair loss by causing blood vessels to dilate in your scalp, thus stimulating the necessary processes for producing and maintaining hair growth.

Loosing hair is stressful and emotional to a lot of people. The key is to remain calm and figure out why it is happening. There are a number of different things which can lead to hair loss; recent surgeries, illnesses or medications, improper hair care, and diet. We will take you through the different causes of hair loss, and examine the most common factors that lead to it.

Surgery or Major Illness

If you have recently had surgery or recovered from a major illness, the hair loss associated with it is probably due to stress and thus a temporary condition. As your body resumes its normal state, stress levels will even out and hair growth will return to normal states.

Hormone imbalances

Hormone imbalances from pregnancy or thyroid conditions may also cause hair loss. Androgens and estrogens can become out of balance with a thyroid condition unchecked. Usually, normalizing hormones with thyroid medication will stop the loss. Many pregnant women notice hormone-related loss during and shortly after their pregnancy. As time goes on, and hormones return to normal levels, the loss will stop and normal hair growth cycles will resume.

Medication

Certain medications may cause hair loss, such as anticoagulants, chemotherapy, antidepressants, birth control pills, vitamin A, and treatments for gout. Other drugs that cause concern include steroids, arthritis medication, ulcer and Parkinson’s treatments, as well as cholesterol-lowering and beta blocking drugs. If the medication is stopped, the hair loss should follow suit. However, if you are on one of these medications for an extended period of time or indefinitely for a chronic condition, you may want to consider a regrowth treatment like Regaine.

Fungal infections

Fungal infections, lupus, and diabetes may all be underlying causes of hair loss also. If your hair loss is a new problem, it may be an indication of a disease, so it’s important to talk to your doctor about your symptom.

Improper Hair Care

Improper hair care that requires extremely tight styling processes like cornrows and hair rollers can cause traction alopecia. This means that the pulling of the hair makes it fall out, and can scar the scalp and follicle. After scarring develops, the hair will not grow back.

Diet and malnutrition

Diet and malnutrition, or environmental exposure to pesticides or heavy metals, may also contribute to your hair loss. If you believe this may be the case, talk to your doctor about any diet changes or nutritional supplements you may need. If your hair loss may be caused by a prescription medication, your doctor may be able to change the prescription. Diagnosing and treating underlying conditions and infections may also reverse the process.

Unique Gene Combinations

Of course, it goes without saying that your thinning hair could be contributed to your unique gene combinations. If it is a condition you’ve inherited, there’s nothing your doctor can do to help. Genetic hair loss can typically be helped and slowed down with minoxidil-containing medicines. To aid the speed of your recovery from permanent or temporary hair loss from any condition, you can seek out Regaine as an over-the-counter application to stimulate your follicles, stop hair loss and promote regrowth. It may be used for men or women, and is easily applied to the scalp on a daily basis.

What ever the cause, hair loss can be a difficult and emotional time for anyone. We will continue to update this site with ways of dealing with your hair loss.
