While everyone is hooked on Angry Birds, Lance completely has no idea about them.

Coolness for him, so far, are Elmo and Barney. Thus, we went to meet these online game rock stars:

It was actually Mareng Ephy's idea to meet at SM City Cebu mall yesterday. She was already there together with her four-year-old Kitoy when she texted me to come over with Lance for an Angry Bird event.

"It would be fun," she said.

When we got there, I was made to purchase an Angry Bird shirt so Lance can go inside their activity area where kids can have their arms, cheeks, and legs painted, take photos with the characters, and participate in the children's games.

Lance didn't do any of that. For a one-year-old, fun means running around and bumping other kids. He also bonded with his ninang after playing hard-to-get at first.

I met the cast of GMA 7's newest soap Luna Blanca last Sunday.

Camille and Chynna requested to see any articles that would come up from that afternoon's press conference. The two were very nice and down-to-earth so who am I to say no.

We are only connected through Twitter and I can't figure out a way how I can lead them to this article since our digital newspaper application has no social media sharing capabilities yet. Hence, this post.

Tsunami prank caused public scare in Cebu

When an earthquake with 6.9 magnitude hit Cebu around 11:49 a.m. today, I wasn't shaken.

In fact, I managed to post "Earthquake!!!" in my Facebook and Twitter accounts while the rest of my colleagues are already under their tables.

The earthquake only rocked our building for less than a minute. Everyone was told to leave right after the floor stopped shaking.

Upon reaching the safe ground, I immediately called my mom at home, where she and my one-year-old son were left alone. I wanted to check if she and Lance felt the earthquake, too.

"O uy! (Oh yes!)" she confirmed, "Kusog kaayo ang uyog sa balay pero okay ra mi (The earthquake shook the house hard but we're okay)."

She added that Lance didn't even cry. To be honest, I was less worried knowing that my mom hurdled many earthquakes in her lifetime.The worst was in 1990 at 7.8 magnitude. For sure, she knows what to do.

At around 1:00 p.m., we were told to just go home. I found out that there was a tsunami alert raised.

"Is it really possible for a tsunami to hit Cebu?" I asked myself.

Though skeptical, I was happy that we were made to go home. I can't wait to check on Lance.

While on the cab with some of my colleagues, everyone including the cab driver shared the panic they felt during that short ground shaking experience. I just kept quiet then hesitantly told them that I didn't panic.

When we were crossing the old Mactan bridge, we saw the super low tide sea. They jokingly said, it can be sign of an upcoming tsunami. We even teased the old driver to drive in super high speed should a tsunami attack us. We later on shove the idea of a tsunami given Cebu's geographical location and divine protection from the Holy Child, Señor Sto. Niño.

At past 2:00 p.m., my colleagues dropped me off at Jollibee-Gorordo where I can take a 13C jeep going downtown to get home. While I was aboard the jeep, my mind reeled over the miracles of Señor Sto. Niño especially on how he answered all my prayers for me and Lance. I always believe that my child has a special purpose here on earth. Then, a disturbing scream broke my deep thoughts.

"Tsunami!!! Naa na ang tsunami! (The tsunami is here!)" a woman back riding a running motorcycle shouted.

I was sitting at the jeep's front seat and saw the heavy traffic ahead of us along the two-way Echavez St. The motorcycle was going the opposite direction.

"Buang! (Crazy!)" I said. The driver must have heard me and answered, "Dili imposible kay sa amoa gani sa Toledo taas na daw ang tubig (It's not impossible because water level is already high in our hometown in Toledo)."

Before I can retort, a horde of people was already frantically going to our direction loudly and repeatedly screaming, "Naa na ang tubig! (The water is here!)"

Everyone immediately got off the jeep including the driver and run along with the crowd. Private car owners did the same and even left their vehicles on the road.

I, on the other hand, ran against the crowd who were pulling me to go with them and warning me about the water, which they said is already in Colon St.

I cried I told them I can't because my mom and son is at home, which is just blocks away from Colon St. Worst, one guy said that the water is already in Gaisano-Main mall and it would be crazy to go there. That mall is just two blocks away from our house!

So I scampered to the direction of our house, which is 10 to 15 blocks away from where the jeep stopped. I know I'm already in panic mode. If the water is already in Gaisamo Main, for sure I won't be able to come on time. This made me cry harder while forcing myself to run faster.

Scenes of dead children as casualties of the last typhoon Sendong flashed my mind. I feared for Lance. I ran even faster.

Further fueling my fear are the worried faces of the people coming toward me while running with their children and some small belongings and momentarily looking behind their back to check if the water is already coming.

While running really fast, I tried to send a text message to my mom, "Ma, wer u? On my way home now." There was no reply. I only have P2 left on my cellphone load so the second and last text message was sent to my news reporter friend, "Dale, tawagi ko pls, wa koy load (please call me, I don't have load)." I was hoping that he'd tell me that there was no tsunami.

When I passed by our barangay hall, I heard a big man on motorbike shout, "It's false alarm." But it didn't stop the people nor I. It only made me run faster.

Thank God! There was no tsunami water whatsoever when I got home. I, however, found my mom, brother, and Lance at our rooftop I immediately took my son and hugged him really tight. I was crying really hard, too.

Later on I realized that we are joined by strangers who requested to stay on our rooftop, where they felt safe should the giant wave arrive.

Our neighbors are also on their respective rooftops preparing for the big splash.

I received a reply from Dale, who I guess sensed what I needed from him, "Tsunami not true."

Somehow it was a relief. I told my family to go back inside our house to further monitor the news.

A police car later on roved around our area announcing that tsunami alert was cancelled and for everyone to stay calm.

The announcement came in too late. The damage has already been done.

Why didn't the authorities announce correctly that the tsunami alert expires two hours after the earthquake? An announcement in layman's terms should have been released. I saw the official announcement online from Philvolcs but it was only released around 2:30 p.m.?!

Who are these inconsiderate pranksters? I think they should be held accountable for causing such unnecessary public alarm.

I have been a reporter and was trained how to verify news but at that moment all I can think of is my son, whom I should go rush and rescue. I think all of the victims of that prank felt the same. To keep their families safe and run for their lives.

We are still experiencing several aftershocks while writing this post. We are still tuned in with the news despite the lifting of the alert.

Amid this afternoon's turmoil, I still reaped something good.

Humanity unfolded right before my very eyes. Except for those heartless pranksters, it's good to realize that some people can actually leave material possessions, value more their families, and help others even if they are faced with the same adversity.

If only we can stay consistent with these values, I think humanity can stand prepared to any forms of tsunami.

Chatting with a friend based in London last night led to serious planning for me to fly to Europe.

I went on searching for airfares that night to know how much I should save for that long overdue trip.

Yes, you read it right.

British-Norwegian boy band A1 will be here in Cebu not to throw a concert though but visit their charity beneficiary in Mactan. I still have to confirm the details as I only just received this news today. A British source told me that the group will fly in first here in Cebu before their concert in Manila on February 25 at the Araneta Coliseum.

I will keep you posted. ;-)

The holidays left me defeated in my 28-Day Blog Challenge. No biggie. You somehow win when you lose. Looking back at the holiday blast I had, there's really no reason to fret. Besides, I can still throw another blog challenge for 2012. :D

Spongebob visits CDN

We had our Christmas party at the office tonight.

Journalists, columnists, editors, and everyone who made this amazing newspaper running went to party even between deadlines.

Great food, good music, raffle prizes, and some superheroes gave our simple party at the newsroom a blast. I will be posting more photos soon.

I am not sure if Spongebob is a superhero but we're glad that he made it to our party.

He might become Lance's favorite soon so I took the chance to have a photo op with him. :D

Birthmas Wishlist

Lance was born five days before Christmas. Practically, this little fella is entitled to only one present that is good both for Christmas and his birthday. Hence, the Birthmas Wishlist.

Niza, my editor and kumare, has long requested me to post what she dubbed as Lance's registry. She said, it would make gift shopping easier for her and fellow godparents. Actually, we were afraid everyone will send pairs of socks as prompted by my Facebook wall post on Lance's new shoes. :D

The following are items in my Christmas shopping list for Lance. It would be really nice if you can cross one out for me. Ü

Clothes

Lance already outgrew almost all of his clothes. Actually, I really never bought much before thinking that he would only be staying at home anyway. Looking at his photos, however, I noticed that he has been wearing the same tee, given by one of his ninongs as Christening gift, every time we go out. The sleeveless pambahays, on the other hand, are already faded. So new clothes are very much welcome. He is size 1 if you're going to buy him some tees and Large for shorts and sandos.

Glass Feeding Bottles

Why glass bottles? Well, I'm scared of the harmful BPA chemicals found in plastic bottles. I have also read somewhere that even BPA-free plastic bottles are not safe. Anyway, Lance has this weird habit of throwing his bottle right after he finished up his milk. My mom usually forgets to put on the protective rubber, which is supposed to prevent the bottle from breaking even when dropped, so to date he has only one feeding bottle left out of seven he used to have. The Evenflo bottle costs around P200 each without the protective rubber.

Toothbrush

We're a little late bloomer when it comes to brushing. Lance now has five teeth but never brushed yet. Ewww! Good thing his breath still smells good. Do you know that he loves to watch me brush my teeth? A glow of excitement shows in his eyes everytime I do some brushing. So a first toothbrush would really be a wonderful present for him. There's a pair of First Years toothbrush in Metro Ayala. It costs around P150 to P200. You may also want to include toothpaste from Pigeon, which is about P100.

Toys

The only toys Lance knew are his teethers and the battery-operated ball-juggling and running turtle. When bored with them, he turns to our TV remote control and any stuff that he can reach, pull, and scatter in the house lived by 4 boring adults. Fortunately, tearing books and magazines; beating on empty tupperwares; and wrestling on pillows, among others simply made him happy and content. Until one day, we met Mickey Mouse at Toy Kingdom. I never saw him hug and cuddle a stuff toy before as he ignores the little ones we have at home. With the same height as he is, maybe Lance thought Mickey is a real boy that is on sale for P799.

Potty Trainer

Our big pooper here needs to cut down on his diaper consumption so maybe a potty trainer would help? :D

Socks

Got these funky feet socks as Christening present. The socks are not only funky but also really soft. I need new pairs in bigger size now though. Something that would perfectly match his new shoes. Ü

Havaianas Slippers

He can't wear shoes all the time outdoors. So some nice slippers would be great, don't you think? Ü

Toddler Stroller

We thought Lance won't need it so we gave his stroller away to his newborn cousin. Recently, carrying him in a carrier or in my arms proved really tiring even for him. A toddler stroller would really be handy. There's this easy to fold umbrella stroller for about P500-700 in Metro Ayala.

Cake

Lance is turning 1 soon. We will have some simple party at home. Do I still need to invite you? Hahaha Anyway, I will keep you posted. If there's a party, there's a cake, which three ninongs have already pledged or forced to pledge to take care of. Hehehe Thanks Drew, Edd, and Neil. ;)

Lance and I live in a small apartment with his Granny and two Titos. Our humble abode is only fit for one big bed. Since we can’t fit all in the bed, some must sleep on the floor. Lance's New Shoes

Florsheim Shoes

A power outage on a hot mid-afternoon led me and my folks to the mall today. Our initial plan was to only stroll and have ice cream. As we did our strolling, we ended up buying this new pair of shoes for Lance.

It's his 4th pair of shoes. Too many for a little fellow who can barely walk.

Actually, I was really planning to buy him some new kickers for his upcoming birthday. His feet grow really fast, which explains the number of shoes. I was looking for comfort, style, and durability that's why I checked on Florsheim, which has a wide display of nice shoes for kids below 12 months.

The store was on sale. So what can a great mommy do? Ü

The Road

Would you drive to an eerie-looking road?

I would definitely not but actress Rhian Ramos took the road less traveled breaking all hell loose both on and off the cam.

In Yam Laranas' latest horror flick, Rhian is the ghost haunting the three teenagers who went on a late night driving spree in the scary private road.

All hell broke loose when Rhian's character Lara was brutally murdered by a psycho she met on that road with her younger sister. Twelve years later, a group of sneaking teens got killed, save for one (Barbie Forteza), after they went for a joyride on that same road.

Incidentally, Rhian Ramos is in hot waters allegedly for taking the wrong road with ex-boyfriend Mo Twister. The formed beau recorded a video blog last year lamenting Rhian's decision to abort their baby in Singapore. As you know, the video recently went viral in YouTube.

No statement yet was released to deny what were expressed in the video but Rhian filed a case against Mo for inflicting emotional violence to her.

Attempting damage-control, Rhian's camp tries to get public sympathy pointing all fingers to Mo as the big bad kiss-and-tell harassing wolf.

Ironically, the case filed was for the violation of Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence against Women and Their Children Act of 2004. If Mo is telling the truth, wasn't it Rhian who first inflicted violence against her child?

To be honest, I can't sympathize with her at all. People are not interested on how her relationship with Mo went awry or how obsessive he became. What we're all waiting is for her to either confirm or deny what were said in the video.

The more she tries to veer away from the real issue, the more she drags herself into it.

Of course, she can't admit it because whatever reason she may have, abortion is not an option for this society.

I watched The Road yesterday. I am a big Yam Laranas fan but seeing Rhian in the movie is simply distracting.

She would probably get through this scandal and maybe still have a great career but this I'll bet: Rhian's own ghost will haunt her forever.

As what the movie's tag line says, "Nobody leaves the road."

The day after I threw myself a challenge to blog everyday, our publisher advised me to again beef up my writing portfolio of hardcore news.

Well, I was asking her if I can do a part-time copy editing job for the editorial team but was instead offered to do in-depth news features for the paper.

It made me think. It made me ponder.

Is this destiny calling me to go back to what I do best?

I am now trying to recall why I left the news team five years ago. What I can remember so far is that I had a great time.

Queen City of the South's elite and fashionistas gathered Thursday night for the opening of Forever 21 outlet in SM City Cebu.

The two-level fashion store is the first F21 outside Manila further marking Cebu as the style mecca of the south.

A fashion show kicked off the exclusive pre-opening party organized by A-List Events group.

What is a fire award?

No, it's not an award for lazy bloggers nor a reminder that your blog should be burned for the lack of update.

Although what were mentioned can aptly apply, I'd rather want to call it as a LOVE award from one of my favorite bloggers Love2Type.

The award entitled me a link to her post so that her lovely blogger friends may come and visit my dormant blog. Yay!

To keep the good karma coming, I also have to share the love to five other bloggers along with a simple treat of revealing five unknown things about myself.

Let's talk about the secrets first assuming that it's what you came here for. LOL

1. I have a big crush on actor Patrick Garcia when I was a teen and I am still waiting for an up close and personal encounter with him in this lifetime.

Happy Even After

Eleven days before the last decade closed, I became a mom.

I gave birth to a 7.12 lbs healthy baby boy through a successful Cesarean operation. I named the cord-coiler Lance.

One-Hour-Old Lance

I shed a tear (yes, just a single drop) on his first sound behind surgical cover. It was meek but momentous. There were no stereotypical furious cries not even an "It's a boy!" announcement (maybe because I already knew, thanks to ultrasound) but there was the inexplicable "tear" of joy in the advent of motherhood .

For someone who first got terrified on the sight of a double-lined pee stick, such melodramatic scene was unexpected.

Two Days After
Lance was finally roomed-in with me.

When motherhood first smiled at me, I welcomed it with so much worry and disappointment. I practically panicked. I felt not ready. The only good thing I want to remember the day I peed on that test stick was that I stood firm in keeping the baby.

My faith taught me that God has a great reason for everything and I am proud that this time I was able to do the right thing---trust in Him.

Indeed, when an angel is sent to earth, miracles happen.

Love and support incredibly rushed in from almost everyone and everywhere that, friends say, I turned out to be a blooming and happy big fat pregger.

Five Months Pregnant at MYOH 5

You see, I had a runaway baby-daddy. I don't come from a rich family. Note that during my pregnancy I was only working as a freelance journalist, who has no regular income and savings.

Still, I was able to go to prenatal check-ups without a miss, take the required supplements and vitamins, eat and drink anything I want, and give birth to a healthy baby boy in one of the best private hospitals in Cebu. It's really costly if not expensive to be pregnant but God makes a way.

If ever one of the strangers, friends, colleagues, and family, who made my pregnancy a smooth journey, finds this blog, please know that I would be forever grateful to you. For you guys made me welcome each sunrise with so much excitement as my bulge grew bigger each day. I may not be able to return all your love and support but rest assured that you made papa God smile.

First Night at Home
Lance was home in time for his Tito Ilgie's birthday.

My love tank was full when Lance made his touchdown on earth that night. I'm already happy while carrying him inside my womb but finally hearing God's greatest gift in the flesh still triggered so much joy proving that dramatic post-natal "crying" scene on TV happens indeed.

With three teeth peeping as he grins, the wide-eyed little fellow continues to unleash his super powers by giving me strength, contentment, and so much happiness.

Indeed, God has a great reason for everything.

I am blogging again, this time to chronicle and share my journey into motherhood. I may not be lucky to have a story starting with the perfect once-upon-a-time fairy tale but somehow I am blessed to be happy even after.

Sam Milby: A True Idol

ABS-CBN’s Idol star Sam Milby is living proof that big stars also have big hearts.

The celebrity hunk was recently here in Cebu to personally meet two Cebuano kids that he is sending to school.

Vivian Togonon and Gian Montealto, both six years old, were not just lucky to meet the matinee idol but also blessed with the opportunity to make their dreams become a reality after Milby announced that he would be supporting them throughout college.

“If they decide to go to college, I hope they would, I am most willing to help them,” said Milby during a press conference of World Vision’s 12-hour Famine Campaign held Wednesday at the BE Resorts in Mactan, Cebu.

Milby’s scholars in Cebu are just two of the eight students the actor is supporting through the Child Education Sponsorship program of World Vision. He has two scholars each in the cities of Cebu, Malabon, Cavite, and Aklan.

World Vision, an international organization helping impoverished children and communities, provides educational support only up to high school. But the actor said that since he’s financially supporting no one else but his World Vision scholars, sending them to college is not impossible.

While promoting the 12-hour Famine Campaign in Cebu, the busy actor took the chance to meet his two Cebuano scholars, who are both grade one pupils in Yati Elementary School in Liloan, Cebu. He also visited the school to check their condition.

“It was such a nice feeling seeing the smiles on their faces,” shared Milby.

The two kids, whose parents have no permanent jobs, were at first shy to meet their celebrity sponsor but later on become comfortable when the actor approached and talked to them in Tagalog.

“Nalipay dyud ko, wa ko magtuo makakita ko niya sa personal. Gwapo ug buotan kaayo s’ya (I was so happy and surprised to see him. He is so handsome and kind),” Togonon said about her meeting with Milby.

Milby, in chitchat with the two kids, asked about their favorite subjects in school and what they want to become when they grow up. When Togonon said she wants to become a doctor, the US-educated actor asked aloud how many years a medical course takes in the Philippines. Montealto, on the other hand, simply wants to become a teacher.

The Fil-American actor also assured support should any of his scholars decide to go into showbiz.

“Whatever their dreams are, I think we should always encourage them to go after it. Basta I’ll be here lang to help them achieve their dreams,” said Milby.

The blockbuster movie actor, moreover, plans to add more World Vision scholars on his list. He is also actively inviting celebrity and non-celebrity friends to join World Vision’s cause. Milby’s Impostor lead co-star Maja Salvador is said to sign up with World Vision soon after the actor’s persistent prodding.

“A P20 a day or P600 a month can already be life-changing for a child that’s why I’ve been encouraging everyone to share in this cause,” said Milby.

Milby is just one of the 35 showbiz celebrities who have been sending poor children to school through World Vision. On the top of the list is megastar Sharon Cuneta who is sponsoring 300 kids. Other celebrity sponsors include Kris Aquino, Lea Salonga, Ogie Alcasid, Regine Velazquez, Miriam Quiambao, Angelica Panganiban, Nikki Gil, Sam Concepcion, Marc Nelson, and Chris Tiu, among others.

Active
Milby, however, is one of World Vision’s most active sponsors. Although busy shooting for an indie film and for ABS-CBN’s newest primetime series Idol opposite Sarah Geronimo and Coco Martin, Milby manages to actively participate in World Vision programs. The actor is now helping the organization promote its 12-hour Famine Campaign, which seeks to raise funds in curbing hunger and malnutrition in the country.

“It’s not enough that we send them to school. Can you imagine how many young students in the country who goes to school with an empty stomach?” explained Milby.

The 12-hour Famine Campaign calls on the youth all over the country not only to register and donate money but also to go on a 12-hour fasting period on November 6 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Flying V Arena in San Juan, Manila, where a big festive concert with World Vision celebrity supporters will be held.

“By going hungry for 12 hours, participants gain a deeper understanding of how it’s actually like to go without food. Their sacrifice allows them a glimpse of hunger, [which] is an everyday reality for millions of Filipinos today,” World Vision said in a statement.

Aside from the concert, educational sessions and talks on poverty issues, inspiring video presentations, prayer time, games, and talent showcases will also be thrown in the event.

Palawan: The Underground River

"Having black f0rest frap n palawan n0w. Ü," my facebook status reads at around the same day today last year.

My first trip to Palawan officially turns 1.

There are a lot of reasons to celebrate: 1) It was my first non-work-related trip after seven years 2) Although not an expense-free trip like I always had, I only spent P999 for my round trip Cebu Pacific tickets to Palawan and 3) It was a birthday spree for one of my closest friends and editor Niza.

We went there to see Palawan's Underground River, which is finalist to the New 7 Natural Wonders of the World. Three years of online campaign now ranks the Underground River among the top 14 finalists for the New 7 Wonders of Nature search. Other strong contenders include the Amazon River, the Dead Sea, the Grand Canyon, and the Galapagos Island. Global voting is still on going until the Top 7 will be finally announced on November 11, 2011. [Vote Here]

Palawan's Underground River runs beneath the St. Paul Mountain Range, which is three hours and 45 minutes van and boat rides away from Puerto Princesa City. It is also called the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, where tourists can enjoy a river cruise on the underground cave of the mountain.

Inside the cave are spellbinding stalactite and stalagmite rock formations, which creatively took Mother Nature millions of years to sculpt. The creepy sounds of inhabiting smelly bats would first welcome you upon entering the cave but the cruise on the underground river, which is also famed for being the longest in the world, is really fun and exciting in the end.

Of course, Palawan is not limited for the Underground River. Billed as one of the top tourist destinations in the world, the island is also blessed with superb seascapes and landscapes, which we definitely did not dare to miss. Details soon.

Libera in Cebu

The Angelic voices of international British choral group Libera is set to enthrall Cebuano fans starting 8 p.m. tonight on their first ever concert at the Pacific Grand Ballroom of Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

Libera's all-boy choir made waves worldwide for their classical and cathedral pieces that topped not just classical but mainstream charts as well. The group's most popular songs include Always With You, Far Away, Going Home, How Can I Keep from Singing, Sing Forever, Ave Maria, Sanctus, and Adoramus.

"It's really nice here. It feels warm and we're really excited to perform tomorrow. I hope everyone will come," one of the group's singer 11-year-old Ralph Skan said in a press conference yesterday morning at the Shangri-La's Mactan Resort and Spa, one hour after they've arrived from the airport.

Joining Ralph are Kavana Crossley, 10, Liam Connery, 13, James Mordaunt, 9, Joshua Madine, 15, and Ben Philipp, 13.

The cute and charming young boys delightedly answered queries from the local press and fussed over the enticing beach of the resort, where they are officially billeted until tomorrow. The group will also throw an exclsive performance at the Ocean Pavilion at 5 p.m. tomorrow for the resort's selected guests and friends.

Composed of 22 members aged seven to 16, the singers of Libera are joined and trained at a church in South London. They have performed with renowned tenors Andrea Bocelli and the late Luciano Pavarotti as well as famous singer-songwriter Elton John.

Libera was also tapped for pop and mainstream movie productions such as soundtracks and musical scoring for films such as Romeo & Juliet, Twelve Monkeys, Hannibal, among others.

It's no turning back.

I am now an official blogger.

So why am I in blogosphere?

Well, why not?!

I live and love Cebu. I learned to write and love in this beautiful metropolitan island. I think it wouldn't hurt sharing some happy thoughts about a simple life in an urban paradise full of interesting people and places.

My only problem: I am a lazy blogger.

When Insomnia Strikes was my first attempt to blogging. Well, I'd like to think that it didn't take off because I became less insomniac.

Now, my hand is full of Happy Pills. Let's pop one pill a day in my tiny personal blog.
