Exciting news!

Reign Ministries is excited to announce we have a new college we are linking with for an undergraduate degree! Moorlands College will be the new home for our degree students from September.

For over 20 years, Reign Ministries has played a key role in the development of a youth pathway for an undergraduate degree with ForMission College, formerly known as Springdale College. As well as recruiting students into this programme, we were privileged to shape aspects of the youth ministry modules and overall student experience.

At the start of April, ForMission announced it was discontinuing its academic courses from September. They also explained that they had reached an agreement to integrate much of their values and legacy into Moorlands College. All current students will be offered the opportunity to apply and finish their studies with Moorlands College, earning a degree awarded by the University of Gloucestershire.

Reign Ministries has enjoyed a long partnership with ForMission College, and will miss the connection and relationships that brought. However, we are excited to invest that same energy and enthusiasm into working alongside Moorlands College. We are working closely with our students and both colleges to make this time of change and transition as smooth as possible.

After exploring the options with Moorlands College about how and where Reign Ministries and the students we have (and recruit) will fit best, we are excited to confirm we will be focussed on linking in with the Moorlands South West campus, supported by South West Youth Ministries. Moorlands College offers two youth work courses; an BA (Hons) in Applied Theology, or a BA (Hons) in Applied Theology youth and community work (JNC) (subject to sufficient student numbers).

Students will attend six residential teaching weeks each year in North Devon. They will continue to operate in a placement every week, which for many will be their home church. They will also have weekly online classes and clusters, to gain more tools and support for ministry. Reign Ministries will play a key role in supporting and delivering these clusters and coaching sessions, both in virtual and in-person capacities.

Whilst all change can be hard, tiring and sometimes very confusing, Reign Ministries is excited for the new opportunities this partnership with Moorlands College will bring, and are delighted to continue to play a role in recruiting, training and coaching more youth minsters for the UK church, who have the heart of a discipler and seek to lead disciple making ministries.

More information about ForMission College can be found here. To explore whether this new degree course could be the right fit for you, get in touch with us so we can send you more information.

Learning from those that have gone before you.

“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” writes the wise King Solomon in Ecclesiastes. He saw that life can sometimes resemble a treadmill, where history simply repeats itself and continues in a loop. We have such a small view of time, thinking the moment we’re in will be the most important, rather than taking a longer-term view on life.

Youth Ministry is exactly the same. We have young people in our groups and programmes for a short few years, so we try to do everything possible before they move on or leave, and then we start over with a new group of young people. Seeing this cycle constantly play out in our ministry, we should be the experts in managing ourselves in this area. Or so you’d think.

We are certainly not immune from repeating mistakes, or failing to apply lessons we have learned the hard way. Hindsight makes experts of us all, seeing how we should have handled a situation, or what would have yielded the most fruit.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” – George Santayana, The Life of Reason, 1905.

I recently approached a number of veteran youth leaders to see what they’d do differently if they could have a “do over”; if they could go back to an earlier time in their ministry and do something differently.

Interestingly, some common themes emerged. Many spoke about slowing down, about pacing themselves better. Matt Summerfield, Senior Pastor of Zeo Church, put it brilliantly:

“Achieve more through a more-focused doing less, and take your time for the long haul. The next 30 years matters more than the next 3!”

“I still have to remind myself that it’s God’s stuff in God’s time, it’s not about how good you feel you are, or whether you fit a certain mould. It’s OK that a ministry grows slowly.” – Sarah Brown, St Andrew’s Leckie Church of Scotland, Peebles.

Another theme that emerged was about caring and developing your own walk with God, and how pivotal this is to successful, long-term ministry.

“If I could sit down with my 20 year old self – as I started out in youth ministry – I would tell myself to prioritise reading the word and prayer. It of course seems so, so obvious to say that and although I was already reading my bible and praying, it was not my first priority in life and ministry. And it needed to be!!”
“I thank God that over the years He has shown me my deepest need to know Him through His word and to spend time with Him to know His will and ways. The more I immerse myself in the Bible and prayer, the more I find that ministry is no longer something to be ‘done’ but rather an expression of who I am in Him. It’s no longer a role I fulfil but a life of worship dedicated to loving Him and loving His world… a world that Jesus gave His life for. May we be known as men and women – as youth workers – who have been with Jesus (Acts 4:13).” – Melissa Piper, Converge International.

“I think my most important learning has to be investing in your own walk with God so you have plenty to offer those around you.” – Andrew Bennett, Youth for Christ Dundee.

Looking back at my first church job, as a youth minister in Australia, I think my number one thing I’d change is by investing much much more into the volunteer leaders who ran the youth programmes alongside me. They were great and enthusiastic leaders, and I probably assumed too much of them, thinking they were co-labourers of the Gospel, when in fact they needed more support, encouragement and guidance than I gave them. A number of other leaders identified a similar thought:

“What I would do differently is invest more time in equipping the adult leaders who came along. I was still learning my trade as a youth worker and so did most of the programme myself, and that was what people expected and wanted. However, giving resources and encouragement to the adult volunteers who led these groups for the rest of the year would have been more helpful to them.” – Paul Beautyman, Youthwork Journeys

“Always try to listen to your volunteer leaders and help them to grow in their ministry. Remember to be gracious and caring to them, so they can walk away from the commitment if they need to, even if you are biting your tongue, the task, the team and the individual are all important, but sometimes the task is less important.” – Sarah Brown

“Never cease from trying to raise up leaders, around me who can step up and use their gifts.” – Andrew Bennett

Kyle McKinnon, Director of Reign Ministries, shared his experience of meeting up with his former young people when they are now adults:

“There is a new experience that I have discovered as my two youngest daughters started reception. On both occasions as I was walking them in to meet their teacher I also was standing in line with parents who used to be part of the youth group that I had led in the community. Once I got past the awkwardness of feeling old, and secondly taking the risk to say are you “such and such.” I really have enjoyed and been struck by the depth of connection that we can start from after a gap of 10+ years. So the message I would have is please invest deeply in the young people you are discipling (1 Thes 2:8) and whom you are hopefully building a healthy friendship with. Hopefully when they come back into your life they are older, wiser versions of Christ followers but alongside of that they can be a new/old friendship that is a blessing to your life that is an unexpected gift from God.”

Relationships with other significant adults also featured, including the families of the young people we work with. Take this advice from Ali Campbell, Founder and Lead Developer of Paraklesis:

“I started out at 18, becoming the Sunday School Superintendent at my small Baptist church in north London. I knew nothing, so pretty much everything I have discovered in the last 39 years would have been useful back then! If I were to pick one thing, that really never featured in my ministry consciousness for about 15 years from then it would be this – partner with the home. All the research tells us that the home, parents / carers in particular, have the most influence on children and young peoples faith development. I would have done far more to encourage parents, journey with them and recognise – especially at key transition times, like children moving from primary to secondary school, that the transition was also happening for them too! Whatever we think of our impact as practitioners, the home environment has a greater impact on the lives of young people than we do – If I could do over, I’d pay more attention to that!”

Or how about this pearl of wisdom from Karen Wallace from the Glasgow Presbytery of the Church of Scotland:

“After reflecting I think one thing I would pass on to ‘younger’ youth workers would be build relationships with key people in your community. When I say key people I mean the hall convenors, janitors if you are working in schools, property teams and other people in similar roles. These are the people in your working life who can make your job an easier one!
Also, communicate! If you think you have communicated enough, you haven’t! Send out another email or display another poster or post again on social media. In our roles you can never over-communicate with the churches, centres or people (whatever age!) that you work alongside!
Building relationships and communicating are key to our roles as we strive to share the Good News!”

Melissa Piper stressed again the importance of self-development, especially our inner spiritual lives:

“In seeking wisdom, growth or support, I found myself primarily turning to leadership books, conferences, sermon series on tapes (yes, I’m that old!), chatting to peers etc instead of seeking first the wisdom that comes from above. There was of course nothing wrong with those other sources of advice and help, but they really needed to be an ‘added extra’ rather than the primary source for growing in my love for Christ and my calling to ministry.”

John Wooden, one of the greatest ever USA college basketball coaches said: “You should never try to be better than someone else, you should always be learning from others.”

Let’s end this trip down memory lane for old youth workers with some ‘what NOT to do” lessons from Andrew Bennett:

“A few things I would do differently:
• Not run an outreach which included food in a school with no teacher present and end up with a food fight!!
• Run a drop in cafe in a community with no thought to my volunteer leaders ability to deal with violent and aggressive individuals
• Try to deliver an evangelistic talk in a school when I was supposed to be advertising a camp .. didn’t go well.
• Run so hard I nearly burnt out … but that in itself was a lesson.”

No doubt some of this has resonated with you if you’ve been involved in leading in youth ministry for longer than 10 minutes! We all have regrets or things we would do differently if we had a time-travelling Delorean car or a “most excellent” phone booth! We wish we could talk to our younger selves and offer the wisdom we have gleaned in the years that have transpired.

Apart from laughing or cringing at our past selves and the mistakes we made, there was a deeper purpose to this article. As you may know, Reign Ministries seeks to train and coach youth leaders, to become disciplemakers and to lead disciplemaking ministries. We have a number of students on our degree programme, and we want them to not only learn the theory of ministry from us, but also learn from our experience and practice, and from the wider youth ministry community across the UK.

Paul Beautyman, quoted above, has recently published a book (“The Four Seasons of Youth Work: How to Survive and Thrive for the Long Term” – Grove Youth) and in the fourth stage, which he calls the Late Season, he speaks of more experienced leaders growing new leaders, and how this is a healthy stage for ministry.

My greatest hope is that our students (and other younger leaders starting out in ministry) will read and take on board the wisdom of those around them. I think this is why Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes, to help those following after him to avoid some of his mistakes and folly, and to focus their lives on Fearing God and Keeping His Commandments.

What would you do differently in your ministry if you could go back and do it again? What advice would you give yourself, or emerging leaders?

A huge thanks to all the leaders who responded and shared their wisdom and advice: Ali Campbell, Andrew Bennett, Karen Wallace, Kyle McKinnon, Matt Summerfield, Melissa Piper, Paul Beautyman and Sarah Brown.

After a few years of considering this move, the trustees and leadership have decided the time is right to try and sell the building we affectionately know as “the moto” (in it’s former life it was a motorcycle sales and repair shop). This building has served the charity well over many years, as a base for ministry, training and accommodation. Moveolution teams would gather here for training before their ministry trips both to Moldova and within the local area. Our Green House gap year programme was based here, with students living in community in the flat upstairs.

In more recent years, as programmes and needs have changed, the flat is now let externally to help generate income for the charity, and the main meeting space downstairs is let to a local nutrition business. Reign Ministries has retained the rear office area, but this is only really used for storage, as all the staff work remotely.

In light of the changing face of Reign Ministries, it was long felt that the asset in the forms of bricks and mortar could be better used by the charity if it was cash, which could then be invested into pioneering new programmes and growing staff and capacity. This was delayed with the Covid-19 pandemic, the need for commercial properties reducing, and the cost of living crisis. However, it was felt the time was now right to test the market and see if someone else could make use of the building, and open up new possibilities for how the cash could be reinvested into the ministry of Reign Ministries.

Here is a link to the property being marketed.

Get in touch if you wish to discuss any matter of this with the executive leadership.

Hi, I am Kaitlyn Middlemass, and I have just started studying with Reign Ministries this year. I am 19 and from Edinburgh. I left school in early 2022 and planned to study with Reign, but during the summer, while working and participating in summer camps, I did not feel prepared to go back into studying that year, so I decided to take a gap year.

During my gap year, I attended summer camps as a member of the youth and worked full-time in between the camps; during that year, I was able to work alongside the leadership team in the church, enabling me to develop my leadership skills and get to know the kids that we have even better than I already did. While doing all that I was able to attend briefs and debriefs from our Monday night youth group and our leadership nights. By attending theses I was able to see a part of youth ministry that I had never seen before, which was an eye opener, and helpful to see what I was going into.

I am doing my placement in Gorebridge, just east of Edinburgh. As a part of my placement, I help run a youth night for our 11-18 year olds. The focus is to intentionally grow relationships with the youth that attend. We organise the activities based on where our youth are at, within their spiritual life. Sometimes, our nights can consist of a night of teaching, and through that night, we can answer any challenging questions that the youth might have, and overall, we can see the development of their spiritual growth.

God has had a real impact on the youth work during our summer camp last year; just before I had started the degree. We had 160 young people sign up for the five days, and over those five days, the young people got to hear different talks from the camp speaker. They got to listen to testimonies from other leaders and volunteers. On the Friday we give the youth an opportunity to take 15 minutes to themselves so they can think about what we have talked about over the week and see if they get the feeling that becoming a Christian is what is in their plan. After the 15 minutes the youth get the opportunity to stand up and declare that they are ready to live a life with Christ. At the end of the week last year we had 25 young people come to faith which was a fantastic outcome from the week.

Hi everyone! I am Jamie Gurling and I started studying at Reign this year. I am 19 and from Glasgow in Scotland. I left high school in 2022 and I thought the next step was obvious, to go straight into further education, just the same as everyone else. So, I followed the norm, moved city and went to university to study Mechanical Engineering. I thought this was what we had to do. I lasted 3 days (must be some kind of record, right?) before I realised that maybe I didn’t need to do this like everyone else.

During the summer before my “long” stint at Uni I was doing so much stuff at Church. From summer camps with Scripture Union Scotland, both as a leader and camper, to being a ‘summer intern’ at my church helping with our summer youth programme. I loved everything I was doing that summer, how I was surrounded by Christians the whole time, and I just felt so on fire for Jesus. That summer was so special to me that I decided to get baptised at the end of it.

But this whole summer I had the impending doom of going to Uni lurking over me. I didn’t want to do it; I didn’t think it was what I should be doing. But I kept thinking to myself maybe it will be different when I start. I thought I was just enjoying myself and it would be fine when I got there. Turns out it wasn’t. All these opportunities that summer weren’t just for me having fun and meeting so many cool people, (although they did that too) but they were given by God and were showing me what gifts I was given, and what he was calling me into. I’m still glad those 3 days in Uni happened though, as they were what really showed me where I should be.

So, after I had a plan of what to do when I got home, (a gap year working at my church alongside a one year course with the Baptist Union of Scotland). I am so grateful for all the opportunities and all the people that have helped me this past year, growing my experience in Youth Work and learning so much about God, myself and what it means to be a Youth Worker. I was recommended to look into Reign Ministries and after research and prayer, I applied, and fast forward another great summer, I am now in Year One with Reign Ministries and absolutely loving it!

I am doing my placement in the southside of Glasgow and as part of it I am doing so many amazing different things. One of the main things I do is a discipleship group which usually has about 11 young people aged 11 to 15. I love seeing them come back week after week, growing friendship, building new ones, as well as them deepening their own faith, and asking questions for themselves. Another thing I have the pleasure of doing is helping at a variety of SU Scotland events, such as Equip West (12-17 year olds from across the West of Scotland, meeting once a month, with games, snacks and a speaker) as well as going to a number of residential events throughout the year. Here I get to go away for a few days and spend time leading groups and meeting young people from all over Scotland, helping them on their with walk with Jesus. I love these times away so much as I know how important they were for me growing up and I love being able to journey with young people the way my leaders journeyed with me.

With each new year comes thoughts about the future. What can I do to get healthy? How can I improve my relationships or achieve a better work/life balance? Are there any new skills I want to learn?

At Reign Ministries, we believe that our degree will prepare you for the future, whatever God calls you to. And regardless of where you end up in life.

Below are stories of what some of our alumni are up to now. They share how the degree shaped their walk with God and understanding of the culture around them.

Lucy Summers. Primary School Teacher.

“The degree has given me a deeper understanding of my identity as a disciple. Not just a believer or a church-goer but an active follower and learner of Jesus. It helped me discover my passion to join in with what the Spirit is already doing locally, and has lead me to start ministering and leading a group for 20-30’s.

There are many different ways God can use a person and the degree showed me this. It also helped me understand that my job and my calling are different things. Whilst I might not be paid by a church, I want my life to reflect Jesus’ mission and hospitality to others wherever He may place me.”

I gained a good understanding of how my practical experiences can help people grow in their strengths. Learning was holistic; I was inspired by the lives of our teachers who modelled what they talked about and encouraged me to lead in the same authentic way.”

Next up is another video from Kyle! This time talking a bit about the changes that our charity underwent in 2023.

Over the past year we’ve been working rebranding our discipleship training under the new heading of “Expand”. Through Expand, we offer a series of training experiences to equip you and your team to effectively disciple young people.

Through our rebranding conversations we recognised that we offer our training experiences around two core themes:

Firstly, we offer training to help youth workers to develop their own personal discipleship practice to become disciple-makers.

Secondly, we are able to equip and come alongside youth ministries to work towards becoming disciple-making youth ministries.

Once we noticed this distinction in what we train, we recognised the need to change how we train. As a result you are now able to access our training in three different ways:

Expand: Online

Expand: Course

Expand: Day

Keep reading to see the details of each!

What is Expand: Online?

With Expand: Online we aim to give youth workers the resources to confidently put discipleship into practice with their young people. We want to help them to go from talking about discipleship, to actually doing it. The low cost, combined with the flexibility of times and no need to travel, means this is ideal for paid and volunteer youth leaders alike.

An initial call with us will explore your heart for disicpleship and what it currently looks like within your context. You will be invited to sessions that cover topics to help you develop and hone your personal discipleship practice. You can sign up for just one 90-minute online session, or all three.

So far, we have covered subjects such as, ‘who to disciple’, ‘how to disciple’, and ‘ready to disciple’. We will continue to offer these sessions within Expand: Online, as well as exploring other useful topics for youth workers looking to engage more with discipleship.

Whilst we believe in the training that we are offering, we appreciate that training alone sometimes isn’t enough. We therefore offer on-going support as you aim to apply the content to your ministry setting.

Expand: Online

What is the Expand: Course?

The aim of Expand: Course is for youth leaders and their teams to gather for one day every six months, over the timeframe of two years. These days are for dreaming, planning and to recieve input from our experienced team. You will do this alongside other teams looking to implement a disciple-making practice. As a team, you will be able to hear from us, from each other, and most importantly, from God.

Time together with the people who help deliver your youth ministry is so precious. Often when teams meet at home, time is taken up by the day-to-day, leaving little space to think about the bigger picture of a healthy ministry. Our aim is to provide you with that time and space. In fact, unlike at a conference or other training days, there will be more time allocated to you and your team. You will have more time to discuss the topics than there is for speaker to teach and train!

Each of these days covers one of the following topics: Discipleship, Leadership, Mission, and Legacy. Your team will recieve both input around these topics, and time to think as a team. You will have the space to relate the content into the context of your youth ministry. Our trained coaches are always on hand to help think through the best ways to implement a Disciple-Making Ministry.

Training days culminate in time as a team setting specific plans to put into place over the following six months. In order to move your focus as a youth ministry towards disciple-making, you will also be part of a monthly huddle. This huddle will give you on-going coaching to help you be successful in the goals that you as a team are being called to.

Expand: Course

We recognise that while this may be an attractive training offer, there is a high level of commitment required. For those who are interested in developing a Disciple-Making Youth Ministry, but are reluctant to commit to the full two year journey, we have created a third training option: Expand: Day.

What is Expand: Day?

Expand: day is much the same as Expand: Course, with the exception that the team only commits to one day of training, rather than the whole two year journey.

Currently, Expand: Day is offered as one (or more) of the training days within the Expand: Course. This is provided without participation in the monthly coaching huddles. However, as we continue to explore the needs across the UK, we are open to running Expand: Day training days that stand alone from the Expand: Course.

Our hope is that more youth ministry teams will be able to join in and start working towards having a heart and culture for discipleship within their youth ministries.

Expand: Day

We’re really excited about these new training opportunities. Our hope is that they offer increased ways for both youth workers and their teams to get involved in discipleship training. And in turn we hope to see a heart for discipleship increase within churches and organisations across the UK.

Figuring out what’s next after school or in your career is a tough decision, you can often feel overwhelmed for choice. You might have even narrowed it down to a certain type of career you’d like, or a rough sense of what God is calling you towards. You are possibly looking at this article because you feel a passion for youth work and church, but even then, there can be so many factors to consider when choosing a youth ministry course. Here at Reign Ministries we aim to do all we can to answer your questions, address your concerns, and make our degree possible for you. Let us try and address some of the initial questions that you, your parents, or church leaders may have:

Can I Afford This?

Many degrees in the UK are over £9,000/academic year. That’s just your tuition; living costs like food and rent are additional, even if you live in halls. However, we are able to save you money by just charging £7,9501 per academic year for tuition fees. As you will be part of our conference community 2 times a year, there is also a small charge of £250 per year which goes towards the conference delivery costs for each of these weeks. That’s a very welcome saving! Our degree is recognised by the various student loan organisations across the UK, so most students are eligible for a student loan to help cover these fees.

Will I Qualify For The Course?

Whilst the course is practical it is also academic. However, if you do not meet the minimum entry requirements (a minimum of 80 UCAS points and English GCSE grade ‘C’ or ‘5‘ or above), then it is possible to do some online tests to see if you can still enrol on the course. Our team will be able to assist you in every aspect of applying and being accepted onto the course. If you do not have the relevant qualifications and aren’t able to pass the initial tests, or perhaps English isn’t your first language, then we also offer a Foundation Year. This year is intended as a year of preparation, and aims to help you develop the necessary academic skills, ability in English, and knowledge to commence the BA programme. We want you to feel that you can do this right from the start.

Will I End Up With A Recognised Qualification?

All students that successfully graduate will end up with a BA (Hons) in Theology, Mission and Ministry with specialism in Youth Ministry. This is issued by Birmingham Newman University. All of the content and course work is designed and delivered in partnership with ForMission College. It is possible to earn a different qualification if you’re unable to finish the programme for any reason.

Where Will I Study?

We have a number of Ministry Hubs throughout the UK. It is here where our students live and participate in work-based learning. Work-based learning will usually take place in a church or youth ministry placement. If you’re already living within a Hub, this could be your home church. We can also help to find a different church or youth ministry placement if needed. Get in touch to find out more about where our hubs are!

For your degree work you will be led in facilitated classes covering the degree modules. These will take place both online and in person:

In person: twice yearly in person at a conference in September and April. These conferences are currently held at The Poplars in Ledbury, roughly an hour south of Birmingham.

Online: in between these conferences, classes will take place online one day a week. These will be no more than 4 hours in total.

Will I Be Supported As A Leader?

Most students will have a level of leadership responsibility within their church placement, and our team will seek to support you as you develop in this, as well as the support you’ll get from your church. One space where you will receive this support from Reign Ministries is through a weekly hub cluster group, made up of a few students from across year groups and one or two experienced cluster leaders. This is a place where you can share, ask for prayer, receive personal training and support. Our support will help you grow personally and spiritually, in leadership, skills and confidence.

Will I Be Accepted?

If you love Jesus and want to lead young people then you are welcome. We are not seeking to become a factory that produces identical graduates from our programme. Instead, we want to help shape and empower what God is already forming in you. And we want to give you the skills and abilities to release those gifts and impact young people with Jesus. We celebrate each person’s uniqueness, the differences they experience in their placements, and the different young people they work with.

We hope you will agree that this is a unique course which is accessible for you. It might be that you have other questions. If this is the case, then please email us at admissions@reignministries.co.uk.

As we have already suggested, it can be overwhelming when you look at all the options before you, but we believe that Reign Ministries offers a unique mix of academic content, practical ministry experience and a highly supportive environment. We desire to ensure the degree programme is within reach of most people in order to raise up future leaders, and to see more churches following a disciple-making strategy within their youth ministry. We would love to see you in September, so what’s stopping you?
