Washington, DC at Night

Last year I went on a couple photowalks that took place in Washington DC at night. Here are a few shots from those photowalks — hopefully there’s another one this year! The first was in March, the second was taken in June, just before the skies unloaded on us!

Snow Day

The DC area is being hit by some more snow (we’ve already had about 20-24 inches) — some areas will get at least another foot. So being stuck at home, watching the news, and keeping an eye on things, I figured I’d take a shot of what’s keeping me warm (coffee and donut) as well as what’s keeping me from going stir-crazy (iPhone with Facebook, Twitter, and the new Google Buzz, as well as having the news on in the background!).

The snow is drifting pretty well out on the deck as well — going to be a nightmare to get out there and clean it when the door won’t open. Guess I’ll crawl out the window! These two were shot with Nikon D300s body and Nikon 18-105VR lens.

Meet Mr B, a 5-week old little boy who just loves to be photographed! After feeding seems to be the best time as he falls right to sleep — but he did wake up when his outfit came off. Luckily I got many of them in before he did wake up, but some of the ones with his eyes opened turned out great too, I think.

All were shot with a Nikon D300s body and Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S lens except the first one which was shot with my Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF lens.

Black and White Photography

Every now and then I get in the mood for some black and white photography. Since I’ve been busy with my new son (and busy napping!), I haven’t had as much photo time as I’d like. Yesterday I went to a nearby park in Vienna, VA and took some shots there, then went to the main drag for a bit. When I got home, I processed them all in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2which makes it super easy to convert everything to B&W since you can get one the way you want it (contrast, etc.) and copy those settings. All were shot with a Nikon D300sand Nikon 18-105VR lens.Had a circular polarizeron as well which did a nice job on the blacktop and skies to make them a bit richer.

Mmm, coffee

I know several of my fellow photogs (well not just photographers I guess, but lots of people I know!) are big coffee drinkers. After Christmas when my son was born, I made use of my Keurig B30 Mini Brewer as well as frequent trips to 7-11 for coffee. While sitting in the hospital room, playing with the [awesome] Crumpler 7 Million Dollar Home I bought from someone on Fred Miranda, I noticed my coffee cup and decided to shoot it. This was shot with a Nikon D300s and Nikon 35mm 1.8 AF-S (one of my favorite lenses for all purpose shooting when you need the speed of f/1.8) — wide open of course!

Is it Spring yet?

As the weather stays bitter and cold, and many of us long for warmer days, I thought I’d share a warm looking image from last April. During a photowalk (the same one that I got my Washingtonian Magazine winner), I captured these cherry blossoms overlooking the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC. In the background is the Washington Monument, framed by the beautiful cherry blossoms.

Cold Weather

The weather the last couple of days has been miserable! Very cold, very windy — and did I mention miserable? Pulled a few of my recent “cold weather” images to share. One is from around Thanksgiving, when it was cold and rainy. The rain was hanging off the ends of the branches just right! It was featured on RedBubble in the Rain Drops & Water Art and Split Tone Black and White groups in December. Taken with a Nikon D300s and Nikon 18-105mm VR.

The second image is of some ice that had formed on the window during a very cold day a week before Christmas. You might remember the blizzard we had that day, leaving over 20 inches of snow in the DC area! Taken with a Nikon D300s and Sigma 150mm Macro.

A Merry Christmas

We had a great Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and even today we have things going on! Hopefully everyone had a great day (and days!) as well It’s been fun to see what people are doing by watching their twitter and facebook feeds.

I wanted to share some of the things I gave my sister for Christmas. First is a family portrait I took of them earlier in the year in a little park here in Manassas. I found a nice “Family” frame for it at the store and printed it in a split tone to match the coloring of the frame. She has a really great family, and I think this shows it off!

I also had a calendar printed, which is quite cool! I’ve got one on my wall here at work. They’re available for purchase if you contact me.

I’m In Washingtonian!

I noticed the other day that Washingtonian put my name and winning photo contest entry up on their website:

I had been checking the local store for the magazine but they still had the old one. Finally yesterday I went to Borders and they had the magazines in! Bought 10 of them for myself and a couple of them for family that don’t live in the area. Very excited to have my photo in there, right on page 11! This is the January 2010 issue of Washingtonian.

Thanks to everyone that voted for me, this is really a great feeling
