Your Tahitian Wedding…

Easier to travel to than you can imagine, Tahiti’s Faa’a International Airport is only an eight-hour flight from Los Angeles with daily nonstop flights. Located as far south of the equator as Hawaii is north, Tahiti is halfway between Los Angeles and Sydney, Australia, in the same time zone as Hawaii (only a two-hour difference from November to March, and a three-hour difference from April to October), and is on the same side of the International Date Line as North America.

Reserving seats with Air Tahiti Nui’s newest promotional airfare start at just $898.00 per person (including all taxes) from Los Angeles to Papeete. This is the first step to take in making your Tahitian Wedding or Honeymoon a dream come true!

Officially known as French Polynesia, the 118 islands and atolls are scattered across five far-flung archipelagoes and cover over 1.5 million square miles of the South Pacific. The ocean area is about the size of Western Europe, while the land area is only slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island. The most visited of the archipelagoes is the Society Islands — home to Bora Bora, Moorea, Taha’a and the largest island in French Polynesia, Tahiti. The Society Islands are a group of high, tropical lush islands encircled by coral reefs — offering beautiful azure blue and turquoise lagoons, the world’s most ideal location for Tahiti’s signature overwater bungalow.

Once you arrive in French Polynesia, all guests are greeted with Tahiti’s traditional Tiare flower. This fragrant gardenia is seen regularly throughout the islands. Tradition holds that, if taken, women and men wear a flower behind their left ear (same side as one’s heart), if they are single, they wear it behind the right ear. Guests are then taken to their resort or escorted to the inter-island carrier, Air Tahiti, for direct connections to the outer islands. Air Tahiti services over 40 landing strips throughout the five archipelagoes of French Polynesia with 11 turboprop aircraft. The island of Moorea is less than 10 minutes from Tahiti, while the most visited island of Bora Bora is a 45-minute flight.

Your Wedding Day

Destination Weddings in the islands of Tahiti are now legally binding for American, Canadian, as well as many other nationals. Many of the hotel, resort and cruise line partners are eager to cater to this new opportunity. Couples who wish to be legally married in the islands of Tahiti can now have a memorable and meaningful wedding in one of the most beautiful, romantic places on Earth!

We have outlined the necessary steps and documents required in order to have a legal ceremony in French Polynesia. Please note that this process will take approximately three to five months to complete. While it can appear to be a daunting task, we will help you every step of the way. Be sure and plan ahead as there are no shortcuts!

Eligibility to Get Married in Tahiti

Both spouses must be at least 18 years old

Neither spouse can be currently married

Spouses must be of the opposite sex

The couple cannot be related by direct lineage

The couple cannot be French nationals or residents of France

The bride and the groom must each choose a witness who must be 18 years of age or older (if the chosen witness is not present, the mayor’s office can provide a witness).

Required Documents

The “Marriage of Foreign Citizens in French Polynesia” application must be completed

A letter signed and dated by both future spouses, addressed to the mayor of the commune chosen for the marriage ceremony.

A copy of both spouses’ passports is required for proof of identity

A certified copy of both spouses’ birth certificates authenticated with an “Apostille” (note: the birth certificates must have been issued less than 6 months prior to the date of the marriage). Both of the birth certificates and the “Apostille” must be translated into French by an approved translator and legalized by the French Consulate. Translators can be found on the consulate’s website.

A “Certificate of Non-Marital Status” (“Certificat de Celibat”) signed by a lawyer, translated into French and legalized by the French Consulate.

Lawyers can be found on the consulate’s website.

Proof of residency for both of the future spouses (a utility bill or any bill noting names and physical address will suffice). A photocopy of bills for both spouses is acceptable.

Optional, if a prenuptial agreement has been created, it must be translated into French and authenticated by the French Consulate.

Send All Materials to French Polynesia
Expedite all materials to the mayor’s office of the commune in which the couple is getting married at least 45 days prior to the ceremony. The mayor’s office will then contact the bride and groom to advise them of the approved date and time of the wedding.

About The Ceremony
On the day of the ceremony the couple, their guests and the witnesses go to the city hall (Mairie). The mayor (or an appointed representative from the mayor’s office) will perform the ceremony, in the presence of at least two witnesses in the language chosen by the wedding couple. After the ceremony, the mayor will give the couple a Marriage Certificate. This certificate will be dated and signed by the mayor’s office of the commune in which the marriage takes place.

Traditional Tahitian Wedding Ceremony Example
The planning process for a traditional Tahitian wedding ceremony generally begins at least 45 days prior to the ceremony. The marriage is civil and is sealed at a city hall with the mayor and an interpreter, if needed. Wedding ceremonies can take place either on a beach or at a resort (some resorts have overwater chapels) after the official ceremony at the city hall. Weddings are typically followed by a traditional Tahitian feast. Although there are variations depending on location, the following is a general description of traditional Tahitian wedding ceremonies throughout the islands of Tahiti. Customized ceremonies are also available upon request.

While the guests are in their bungalow, the priest’s assistants will come to dress up the bride and groom with white pareo (painted wraps, like sarongs). The couple is adorned with specially created flower crowns and leis. The ceremony includes traditional gowns, a priest, a group of dancers and musicians, tropical flower arrangements, leis and crowns and a wedding certificate made of traditional “tapa”. The couple is then wrapped in a “Tifaifai” (Tahitian quilt) following the ceremony. After the ceremony, a cocktail is served to the couple. A romantic dinner can be prepared on a secluded, private islet, on the beach, or at a restaurant especially for the wedding couple. A professional photographer takes pictures of the ceremony. A memorable “tapa” with the couples’ joint Tahitian name will be given to commemorate this unforgettable occasion.

Wedding Options and Service Descriptions at the Le Meridien Bora Bora

Tahiti ~ The word evokes visions of an island paradise. With 118 islands boasting high, rugged mountain peaks, coral reefs, turquoise-blue lagoons, white sand, palm-fringed beaches, and luxuriously intimate resorts, each island paradise has something for everyone. Bora Bora, Moorea, Huahine, Taha’a, Raiatea, Manihi, Tikehau, Rangiroa, Fakarava, The Marquesas and the other exquisite Islands of Tahiti cover more than two million square miles of the South Pacific Ocean and is comprised of 118 islands and atolls spread over five great archipelagos.

Many islands are crowned with jagged peaks while others appear to barely float above the breaking waves. Spanning an area in the South Pacific as large as Western Europe, the total land mass of all the islands adds up to an area only slightly larger than the tiny state of Rhode Island.

Easier to travel to than you might imagine, Tahiti’s Faa’a International Airport is under 8 hours by air from Los Angeles (LAX) airport, with daily nonstop flights. As far south of the equator as Hawaii is north, Tahiti is halfway between California and Australia, on the same side of the International Date Line as North America, and in the same time zone as Hawaii (only three hours behind California from March to October and two hours behind California from November to March).

Bora Bora, The Romantic Island
Under a one hour flight from the island of Tahiti or Moorea, the island of Bora Bora, with a lagoon resembling an artist’s palette of blues and greens, is love at first sight. Romantics from around the world have laid claim to this island where the castle-like Mount Otemanu pierces the sky. Lush tropical slopes and valleys blossom with hibiscus, while palm-covered motu circle the illuminated lagoon like a delicate necklace. Perfect white-sand beaches give way to emerald waters where colored fish animate the coral gardens as they greet the giant manta rays. This could be easily be described as the center of the romantic universe, where luxury resorts and spas dot the island with overwater bungalows, thatched roof villas, and fabled ambience. Simply said, Bora Bora is the most beautiful island in the world.

Pora Pora – the ancient name, meaning “first born,” came from legends describing this as the first island to rise when Taaroa, the supreme God, fished it out of the waters after the mythical creation of Havai’i, now known as Raiatea. Although the first letter “B” does not exist in the Tahitian language, when Captain Cook first heard the name he mistook the softened sound of the Tahitian “P” for “B” and called the island Bora Bora.

Romance on Bora Bora
Truly ~ the most romantic island in the world. From the dramatic scenery to the privacy and amenities of the overwater bungalows, everything in Bora Bora equals a 10 on the romance scale. Resorts have been welcoming couples for over 40 years and their special amenities have been fine tuned to perfection. From sunrise to sunset, each resort has designed their own blend of unique romantic experiences for their guests to choose from.

Moorea, The Magical Island
A few minutes from the island of Tahiti by plane, and only thirty minutes by high-speed catamaran, Moorea soars magically out of the ocean in an explosion of green velvet – what you would imagine a South Seas island to be.

A wide, shallow lagoon surrounds the island’s vertical mountains where poetic threads of waterfalls tumble down fern-softened cliffs. Peaceful meadows flanked by pinnacles of green will fill your senses and renew your belief in the majesty of nature. Pastel-painted houses surrounded by gardens of hibiscus and birds of paradise, circle the island in a fantasy of happy, yet simple villages.
A favorite among repeat visitors who all agree: The beauty of Moorea is unforgettable…

Aimeo I Te Rara Varu
This, the island’s poetic name, comes from the eight majestic mountain ridges; however, the name was later changed to Moorea-meaning “Yellow lizard”- following a dream by a high priest.
Polynesian legend describes the panorama of volcanic ridges as the second dorsal fin of the fish that became the island of Tahiti. These pinnacles later inspired the mythical “Bali Hai” that was based on James Michener’s book, Tales of the South Pacific.

We are very excited about the addition of Visual Itineraries to our collection. This will enable you to see several, sometimes more than 30 current pictures with each resort we offer. Take a look and let us know what you think!

While Trip Advisor reviews can be overly good (and also overly bad), they can be helpful in determining the overall feel of a resort. Please be sure to ask us for an opinion, as we do not necessarily agree with all reviews. If you see a resort where we have not yet added a review, please feel free to send a note and we will make sure that it is added within 24 hours. Likewise we do work with many areas around the world and would be happy to help in any way that we can on those destinations as well. Here is a live, current example of what you will find on our resort pages. Here is Namale Resort & Spa’s latest review:

By Piper Fenton, Remarkable Honeymoons

Namale Resort & Spa – “ah” one of our favorite all inclusive Fiji resorts. Namale is at the pinnacle of luxury, with beautiful and authentic Fijian décor. The landscape is outstanding with native plants and the most amazing vistas. The Bures and Villas are so well equipped that it is difficult to leave them! Fine dining and all beverages are also included which also makes this resort so special.

To start, it was one of the easiest trips we have made when traveling for long distances. Our Air Pacific flight left Los Angeles late at night and by the time we got settled, we easily fell asleep and woke about 45 minutes prior to landing. The crew with Air Pacific was so nice and helpful, and the business class seats were a steal in comparison to the cost going just a bit further to Australia or New Zealand. On arrival we were met with fresh flower lei’s, a refreshing minted towel which really did help to wake us up, and a cold bottle of Fiji water for each of us which was so nice to have while we waited for our next flight to Savusavu! The flight was a beautiful trip over the Fijian Islands. It is roughly one hour to Savusavu in the north, and the airport on Vanua Levu is right next to some lovely vistas of the coastline.

On arrival, we were met by the resort staff who took care of our luggage and delivered us to the resort in a comfortable van. We spent 5 glorious evenings in Bula House Villa, with our own infinity swimming pool and outdoor Jacuzzi. Bula House was equipped with its own kitchen, a huge living room, and a spacious billiard area. They kept the kitchen stocked with snacks for us to enjoy each day including fresh cookies, and also where they stored any alcohol that we wanted to have on hand (though it was much more fun to have cocktails created for us in the bar). To top it off the sound system in the villa was amazing. The huge king sized bed was set above the most beautiful view of the Koro Sea, and our bathroom had an indoor Jacuzzi, and two showers – one indoor and one outdoor. Such difficult choices we had to make!

The Spa at Namale is one of our favorites in all of Fiji. The setting is conducive to maximum R&R. We highly recommend pre-booking Moonlight Magic, where the resort closes for the evening and the spa is entirely yours. When you arrive at the spa for this unbelievable evening, you may give the staff your music (CD or IPod) or let them know what you like and they will put it on the sound system. The evening starts with a couples foot massage and champagne, followed by a couples massage as you overlook into the Koro Sea beyond. Their setting gives you the feeling that you are literally suspended over the water. The evening ends with your having the Aroma Therapy pools to yourselves finished with an amazing rain shower like nothing you have experienced before! When you head back to your Bure, the staff will be waiting at your doorstep with dinner in hand, which they will set up in your Bure or Villa.

The Activities are Namale (nearly everything is included) include horseback riding, private trip to the waterfall with a picnic luncheon, private candlelit dinners on a deck overlooking the Koro Sea, golfing, to name a few. And if you get in the mood for a movie, billiards, or bowling the Kava Bowl is always within easy walking distance. Diving is available (for a small added fee) in one of the most world renowned sites.

The staff was amazingly helpful in every way. They would not accept tips, but we were able to leave a donation to their holiday fund at the end of our stay. We really enjoyed not having to worry about money during our entire stay.
Our return trip was easily seamless, and the icing on the cake to an otherwise perfect 2nd Honeymoon was our being able to enjoy the first class lounge in Nadi airport prior to flying home.

Having spent my 15th Anniversary at Namale, I can honestly say it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. To explain the wonder of the location, and the gift of the Fijian people is nearly impossible to describe. One must visit Namale to really experience what I am talking about. The possibility of really getting away from everything and meeting the Fijian culture is a double benefit – on top of the obviously wonderful amenities that the resort provides.

Our honeymoon started with flights to Nadi, Fiji on Air Pacific and we were lucky to be upgraded to Air Pacific Tabua Class or Business Class! We purchased regular coach tickets like just about everyone does, but at check in, we were able to purchase the upgrade to business class seats for about $600 each! This was a huge savings over the regular rate for business class tickets. We weren’t so lucky on our return and didn’t get the upgrade. However, Air Pacific’s service was great in both directions. In the Tabua Class we had more room to stretch out and a full hot meal. In Coach Class we also had a full meal, just not as many choices. A generous beverage service, movie and music selections in both cabins. If you can swing it at the time of check in, I would recommend paying for the upgrade!

Once we arrived in Fiji it was just after 5am and surprisingly we were wide awake and ready to go! There were friendly Bula’s being sung out everywhere with warm Fijian smiles to match. After collecting our luggage we were met by Rosies Tours with these little towels scented with mint, bottles of cold Fiji Water and a beautiful tropical fresh flower lei; what a way to arrive in style!

Qamea Beach Resort & Spa, Fiji Islands

Next we were taken across the street to the Island Hoppers Tarmac for our flight to the island of Taveuni. They have new fixed wing planes with leather seats and air conditioning. The flight was beautiful, clear skies led way to see the smaller islands and the crystal clear blue lagoons – just stunning!

Once we landed on the island of Taveuni we were met by a member of Qamea’s staff and taken to the boat dock. Qamea’s dive boat picked us up and about 10 minutes later we were there….in front of one of the most beautiful beaches that we had ever seen dotted with little huts! We would later learn that the little huts are the bures that we would be staying in, right on the beach.

We spent 7 beautiful nights in the Royal Beach House! It was amazing, our own private pool, an outdoor rock shower and the beach just steps away! It was like our own private slice of heaven! A chilled bottle of Champagne was waiting for us in our bure and they had placed fresh tropical flowers everywhere…talk about romance, romance was everywhere! The staff was amazing, we have never felt such a warm welcome (after all this is a hotel /resort right? not), we felt like we were in their private homes - like family! The food was beyond our expectations. A bounty of fresh tropical fruit every morning and strong coffee, a perfect start to the day. Fresh fish every night pared with New Zealand and Australian wines. We spent our days on the beach (I even found a heart shaped piece of coral that I took home!), snorkeling right off the beach seeing a wide variety of colorful tropical fish and kayaking in the beautiful blue lagoon! Our evenings were filled with memories of the Qamea Band playing Fijian favorites as we gazed into the sunset, chatting with the other guests & staff and ending the night with a dip in our private pool!

We stayed over a Sunday and went to the Naiviivi Village on the island of Qamea for a local Fijian church service. Even though the entire service was in the Fijian language we were awestruck! Their language is so lyrical and the singing is so angelic and beautiful. It was one of the highlights of our trip. We also toured the Naivivi Village during the day, met the village chief and experienced a Kava ceremony. Kava is the national drink in Fiji, a powder made from dried and ground roots of the Kava plant. Everyone sits in a circle while the Kava is mixed with water in a wooden Tanoa bowl. As we sit in the circle amongst the Fijian villagers telling stories and singing, a coconut bowl of Kava is passed around for all to drink. As one drinks from the coconut there are a series of claps before it is filled and passed along to the next person. Now I can’t really say it tastes good; it is a light brown color and makes your mouth tingle. They say it helps you relax and sleep soundly, maybe we didn’t drink enough…..but once is enough! The experience itself was one we will remember forever!

I also experienced one of Qamea’s signature Jungle Spa massages. I was a bit nervous to be honest as I’m quite ticklish and haven’t experienced many massages at the hands of a professional in my lifetime. As I walked the tropical path to the spa I was yet again in awe by the beauty that is synonymous to Qamea. Around every twist and turn you are presented with another unique form of visual delight. Qamea not only offers a feast for the waistline but for the eyes too…everywhere!

As I got closer the steps ascended into a forest canopy of emerald green. The Spa itself is a very serene and calming place with low music and delicious scented candles to set the mood. Charlotte welcomed me and showed me to a changing room. Here I undressed and put on a Qamea robe. Charlotte then lead me to a treatment room. She asked me what type of massage we would like in terms of pressure. I said firm. Over the next hour I was at the mercy of the lovely Charlotte and she worked her way through all of the kinks and knots. Not once did I feel ticklish! It was true bliss and such a treat. At Qamea time slows again and for those of us who live in a busy, rush- rush world it is such a positive feeling to get back to basics again and to be able to take the time to breathe. I left the spa feeling like the weight of the world was lifted with my entire body feeling moisturized and pampered. The only problem is once you have experienced one of Qamea’s massages you then continue to think about when you can have another and another… I think I can safely assume my massage drought has now passed!
My new husband used this time to try one of the new activities at Qamea; stand up paddle boarding! The activity boys at Qamea were on hand to give instruction and even went out into the lagoon with him. Needless to say it took a few tries before he was up and standing. He booked his massage the next morning!

It was time to say good bye and we found tears in our eyes as the staff sang the Fijian farewell song; Isa Lei. We will remember our honeymoon forever and will return to this magical island.

When we arrived back into Nadi we checked in for our sad flights home only to find we had a rather long wait in the Nadi Airport. Being adventurous, we took a taxi into Nadi town for a look around. You can walk up and down the blocks in about 20 minutes but by walking a bit further we were able to find a great little restaurant; Chefs and had a great Indian curry dish for dinner. Back to the airport….we had passes to enter Air Pacific’s Airport Departure Lounge and were able to grab a beverage in the air conditioned waiting area before we departed for Los Angeles.

Was this the best trip we have ever taken? Yes! Would we do it again? Yes! Would we change anything? Not one single thing, it was the perfect honeymoon!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (POST – CYCLONE EVAN UPDATE) (THURSDAY 1830)

FIJI READY FOR TOURISTS TO ARRIVE FOR CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR’S

Sydney, Thursday December 20 – Just three days ago, visitors and residents of Australia’s favourite tourist destination, Fiji, were taking shelter in the midst of Tropical Cyclone Evan.

On Tuesday, Nadi International Airport re-opened and airlines, led by Fiji’s national carrier Air Pacific, restarted operations.

Today all airline flight schedules are back to normal.

Now, after two days of massive clean-up efforts, many, if not most, of Fiji’s resorts and hotels have re-opened or will re-open by this weekend. As a result, with the airport now fully operational, airlines flying, and sunny blue skies and a light breeze present, Fiji expects to be ready for the many tourists due to arrive this weekend in Nadi to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s.

In support of this country-wide effort, Tourism Fiji would like to note that as of today:

Health

There were no major injuries or worse as a result of Tropical Cyclone Evan.

The Fijian Ministry of Health Department reports there have been no reports of Typhoid, Dengue Fever, or other health hazards anywhere in the country.

Utilities

Electricity, water, and telecommunications services are being restored to much of the main island of Viti Levu by tomorrow and most of the outer islands expect to be restored within the next 48 hours.

Evacuation Centres

Approximately 11,000 Fijians were accommodated in evacuation centres last night where they were provided with abundant water and food supplies as the Fijian Government works towards returning them to their homes — following needed repairs or re-building.

Airports & Airlines

Nadi International Airport is fully operational and all flights in & out of Fiji have resumed.

Fiji’s outer island airports are also fully operational.

Roads & Ground Transportation

All main highways as well as all resort/hotel roads are open to traffic, and ferry services have resumed to Fiji’s outer islands.

98% of all hotel & resort transfer operators are operational and have resumed services.

Resorts & Hotels

Apart from the Westin at Denarau Island (which will be closed for roof & air conditioning repairs), all resorts on Denarau Island are open and should be operating normally by tomorrow.

Coral Coast hotels and resorts – all fully operational.

Taveuni, Savusavu & the Northern Region of Fiji – all resorts & hotels are fully operational

Suva and Pacific Harbor – all resorts & hotels are fully operational

Nadi hotels – all are operational except for some reduction in rooms at Novotel, Tanoa Apartments, and Trans International (which has a damaged roof)

Hotels near Nadi – First Landing – normal operations; Anchorage Beach Resort has a reduction in rooms; and Fiji Orchid will be closed for several months.

Island resorts off Nadi – resorts that are open & operational include but are not limited to:

Lomani

Plantation

Tokoriki

Viwa

Island resorts off Nadi that are closed temporarily are:

Matamanoa Island Resort – re-opening tomorrow 21 December

Blue Lagoon Beach Resort – re-opening tomorrow 21 December

Malolo Island resorts – re-opening 01 April 2013

Funky Fish Resort – re-opening in July 2013

Visitors Thus Far

Since Cyclone Evan, more than 4,614 passengers have already flown into Nadi to visit, return home, or to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s.

Waivers, Change Policies & Further Resort Updates

Air Pacific has introduced a waiver policy which allows travellers booked on flights to re-schedule without penalty (or change in fares) up to 31 March 2013 if they do so by Monday, December 24, 2012.

Most hotels and resorts have similar policies (check websites for actual policies).

“Tourism is the mainstay of Fiji’s economy and everyone here is working hard to make certain that Fiji’s resorts, hotels, and tour operators are back in business,” said Dave Pflieger, Chairman of Tourism Fiji.

“Fijians everywhere depend on tourism for jobs and income for their families, and we would urge visitors who have plans to come to Fiji to catch your flight and continue to come and visit our stunning 333 islands, as we celebrate the Festive Christmas holiday season,” said Elizabeth Powell, Permanent Secretary for Tourism.

Tourism Fiji hahs provided us with the above information.

We appreciate your interest in travel to the South Pacific and look forward to assisting you with your travel plans!
