I gave the article an 8 out of ten in that it did fail to talk about the process of achieving it's current philosophy. Negotiating such struggle is daunting, though good work.

Excellent resource. Many of our institutions tend to dam ourselves from our cities. Seems like Warner is not just teaching it's students how to swim, it's also seeking the shalom of the city.

These interviews provide a great intro into Rah's book. His articulation of cultural challenges to US churches is important - and his passion for church life is great at a time when our individualism/consumerism undercut that theological key. As he notes, there are many with a romantic idealism about multicultural church life - but it takes skills, patience, humility, and hard work.

We grew up in North Dakota so knew very little of racial unrest. When I was 5, my oldest brother was getting married and my mother had a mini-crisis. One of Richards' (my brother) friends was black and was serving as an usher. Mom was so concerned how the three youngest boys (Ages 7, 5, and 4) would react to him.....she needn't have worried. We were so interested in the gold buttons that were on his suit that we were more of a pest than purveyors of nasty comments. My parents taught me by their actions to treat people with equality. Because of that, when I meet a person of a different culture or ethnicity, I have the great privilege of being around a person who worship Jesus Christ in a different way. My whole life in the last five years have been dramatically changed for the better. The men and women in our downtown choir (you know who you are...being from Ethiopia, Nigeria, etc.) have taught me to pray more fervantly, to pray more consistently . I finally feel like that, most days, I can truly love our Lord with a PASSION because of being around people like you. I am the luckiest guy to have gotten to know them. Racial harmony IS a must if we are to grow to our fullest potential in serving our wonderful Lord. Thank you, Pastor, for sharing those thoughts because it triggered my own thinking. "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another". Prov. 27:17

I think that socioeconomic stereotypes are more influential than those of race or gender. For instance, a wealthy person of any race will look down on a poorer person as though they were a loser, scum, bum, or trash. Even though they may not have been afforded the same opportunities or may not have been able to take advantage of those opportunities because of the stereotypes put on them.
Granted, racial stereotypes have an impact on the lives and actions of all races. However, the positive racial stereotypes put on whites may affect poorer white people because they are believed to be wealthy and can produce as such. Furthermore, socioeconomic stereotypes encompass all races, religions, genders, and sexual orientations.
