This is important in the context of data breaches because it speaks to the immutability of our exposed personal information. It also speaks to the limited practicality of services that promise to erase your data from the internet, and it’s the constant outreach from these organisations looking for marketing opportunities on Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) that’s prompted me to write this.”

Unfortunately, sexual health content is often flagged as ‘against community standards’ and suppressed by platforms – a practice known as shadowbanning. Earlier this week, in the final days of the month, artificial streaming manipulation caused Todd’s song to skyrocket 70 percent to the top of the charts within a 24-hour period. Spotify has since confirmed the manipulation after its investigation. The company also requested that Polymarket and Kalshi remove Spotify logos from their websites to prevent users from believing there is a partnership between the entities, according to Bloomberg.”

Tech Policy Press: Countering Authoritarian Disinformation Requires More than Platform Governance. “Disinformation is more difficult to identify than other tactics to control and manipulate information, such as internet shutdowns or media censorship. Disinformation campaigns involve politicians or state actors but often rely on networks of private, anonymous, or foreign actors, including PR firms, that are difficult to identify. Independent journalism often plays a key role in uncovering these campaigns.”

PsyPost: Social media users tend to face more political hostility in less democratic and more unequal countries. “Social media is often blamed for turning political debates into toxic battlegrounds, but a new study provides evidence that offline societal inequalities actually play a role in shaping this digital aggression. The findings suggest that users in less democratic and less economically equal countries experience significantly more political hostility online than those in more egalitarian nations.”

AI PROBLEMS

TechSpot: Big Tech’s $8 trillion AI bet is making consoles, cars, and electricity more expensive for everyone else. “The rapid build-out of artificial-intelligence infrastructure is no longer just a software story; it is increasingly a supply-chain story, and it is beginning to show up in higher costs. As tech giants pour hundreds of billions into AI infrastructure, higher hardware, power, and construction costs are starting to show up in the inflation data.”

The Register: Claude Code users complain their chat records are being mysteriously wiped out . “Claude Code users are reporting that the app is silently deleting conversation transcripts – yours may even already be gone if you don’t know to change a default setting that the platform never bothers to tell users about.”

ANTI-AI ACTIVISM

Kansas Reflector: An unexpected coalition has emerged to fight data centers in rural America. Politicians, take heed.. “In the hour before the planning commission met June 23, about 100 activists gathered outside White Auditorium to wave signs, chant, and urge motorists passing on Sixth Street to honk if they opposed the data center. Signatures were gathered for a petition to force the city to adopt an ordinance banning high-impact data centers or to put the measure to a public vote.”

DATA CENTERS

Greg Abbott calls for ban on data center development in rural Texas neighborhoods. “Gov. Greg Abbott called for blocking new data center development in rural parts of the state during a campaign stop in East Texas on Tuesday.”

Source New Mexico: New Mexico residents say their names used without permission to support Project Jupiter data center. “Residents from three New Mexico cities say their names falsely appeared on letters urging state environment officials to approve air quality permits for the controversial Project Jupiter data center after they were approached by canvassers for the project.”

AI IN GOVERNANCE

New York Times: How A.I. Is Changing the Way Politicians Run for Office. This link goes to a gift article. “After their chat ended, one of the canvassers, who was volunteering with Swing Left, a Democratic political group, recapped what Mr. Bond said into a phone app. That memo was then analyzed by an A.I. tool alongside hundreds of other memos from similar door-knocks happening around the district. The A.I. tool synthesized what voters like Mr. Bond were saying, feeding reports that the campaign could use to tailor its messages and turn persuadable voters like him into supporters.”

Gizmodo: Are Those Fake Books on the New Air Force One AI-Generated?. “There are plenty of reasons to remain skeptical when it comes to images released by the Trump administration, however. Trump himself posted an image to Truth Social on June 29 that appeared to show a large golden eagle strapped to the White House.”

AI IN WORK

Reuters: Argentina’s plan for AI-run companies can’t avoid humans. “Argentine President Javier Milei generated both excitement and fear last month when he announced a congressional bill to create ‘non-human corporations’ run by AI, but the companies would actually require human involvement.”

The Block-owned streaming service will also remove AI-generated music that impersonates artists or is linked to fraud.”

Ars Technica: New attack provides one more reason why AI browsers are a bad idea. “New research puts this predicament on sharp display. It demonstrates how a website can lull AI browsers into a false reality where the rules governing its behavior no longer apply. After that, an attacker has free rein to invoke all kinds of destructive actions, such as extracting code from a private repository or extracting credentials from the built-in password manager.”

However, current global estimates of food intake are uncertain and incomplete. Here we develop a Global Dietary Database for Impact Assessments (GDD-IA) that combines data sources on regional food availability and food waste estimates, socio-demographic variation in intake from dietary surveys and energy intake estimates based on measurements of body weight, height and physical activity.”

This new database shows where they are. “An estimated 7,000 Revolutionary War veterans were buried in Ohio, but there’s been no centralized database of their graves – until now. Behind the initiative is the fact that around 20% of France’s coastline is already affected by coastal erosion, and that by 2050 approximately 5,200 homes could be impacted by the effects of rising sea levels due to climate change.”

AI PROBLEMS

Associated Press: AI is an energy and water hog, here’s what you can do to counter that. “Artificial intelligence and the data centers they require use growing amounts of energy and are water hogs — and AI companies aren’t transparent about how much of those resources they use, experts said. So each time you turn to the internet and seek an AI-fueled response, it’s gobbling up precious resources.”

Ars Technica: Trump’s plan to redesign every .gov website leads to AI-designed horrors. “Last August, Trump created the National Design Studio, or NDS, by executive order. A temporary DOGE-like entity that answers only to the president, NDS was tasked with creating new standards to update the US Web Design System (USWDS) and overhaul 27,000 dot-gov websites in just three years…. Most people agree that updating government websites is a worthwhile and necessary endeavor. But about a year into NDS’s existence, the team hasn’t accomplished much.”

DATA CENTERS

Data Centre Insight: The Scarlet letter: How the EU’s new A-to-G energy stickers will expose underperforming data centres. “Imagine having your worst habits put on a billboard for everyone to see. Or wearing a huge, ruby red ‘A’ on your clothing. For years, data centres have kept their energy and water bills private, but this is about to change. The EU is rolling out new rules to grade data centres based on their performance publicly. These new mandatory energy stickers rate them from A-to-G, just like the ones found on your washing machine.”

NJ Spotlight News: NJ has crucial choices on data centers, environmentalist says. “Data centers contribute to heat islands, or higher temperatures locally relative to their regions. Cities, and even some blocks within them, can experience hotter weather in part because of scarce trees and other vegetation.”

AI IN GOVERNANCE

Associated Press: New York City Council candidate is accused of forgery over AI-generated posts. “A former New York City Council candidate has been charged with forgery over allegations he used artificial intelligence to post fake endorsements and news articles on social media. Jonathan Rinaldi was arrested outside his home Wednesday and could face up to two years in prison if convicted. The 47-year-old ran unsuccessfully as a Republican for a council seat from Queens last year.”

CommonWealth Beacon: Healey slams brakes on data center tax incentives. “THE STATE WILL NOT accept applications for data center tax incentives until further notice, Gov. Maura Healey announced Thursday as she simultaneously rolled out the guidance that she had pledged would focus on energy independence and environmental impacts.”

Mashable: Prosecutors use man’s ChatGPT log in unsuccessful arson trial. “According to California prosecutors, suspected arsonist Jonathan Rinderknecht ‘used ChatGPT like a diary,’ not only building up a fascination with fire but generating images of cities burning, reports the BBC. In one prompt pulled from Rinderknecht’s ChatGPT history, he asked the AI whether he could be held responsible for a fire caused by his fallen cigarette, according to ABC News.”

Reuters: US removes curbs on Anthropic’s latest Fable and Mythos AI models. “Anthropic said on Tuesday that the U.S. Commerce Department lifted export controls on its most advanced Fable and Mythos AI models, less than three weeks after the company was ordered to suspend their access over national ‌security risks. Washington has stepped up oversight of new model releases to identify potential threats amid concerns that advanced AI models could be misused by military intelligence in China, Russia or other countries of concern.”

University of Stuttgart: Innovative Algorithms for species conservation. “Patterns reveal the individual: The AI algorithm RAPID identifies wild animals by their unique patterns in real time. It works quickly and precisely, enabling significant progress in the monitoring and protection of zebras, jaguars and giraffes.”

Florida International University: FIU researchers reveal how altered images can bypass AI safeguards. “As shown in research presented at the 2025 International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications (ICMLA), the team found that by introducing microscopic pixel-level changes called ‘perturbations’ into an image, they could trick these AI systems into generating responses that they would normally block.” Good morning, Internet…

NEW RESOURCES

Capital B News: Why We’re Building a Black Oral History Archive. “For the Record: A Black Oral History Archive is a collection of over 100 firsthand stories from Black Americans across regions, generations, and identities. Since last year, our reporters and partners have been gathering recollections from Black people that paint a vivid picture of resistance, resilience, invention, and celebration.”

Sun Journal: Maine’s roadside farm stands now have their own map. “[Mike] Connery spent a weekend building the Farmstands Guide website… with a form for anyone to add their own stand. It now has more than 100 listings and averages 300 users a month.”

TWEAKS AND UPDATES

Search Engine Roundtable: Google AI Overviews Tests Button To Go To Only Web Results. “Google is testing a button in the AI Overview within Google Search that takes you to the web only tab. As a reminder, the web only tab does not have any AI search features or other search verticles, it only has the web search results.” I’d like a button that turns the AI off entirely. I know there are ways you can get around it, but I want GOOGLE to offer an opt out.

New York Times: Australia Says It Will Toughen Its Social Media Ban for Children. This link goes to a gift article. “…the government said on Saturday that it would toughen penalties for tech companies found to be violating the law, doubling the maximum fine to about $70 million. The government also said it would increase the online safety regulator’s legal authority to compel companies to provide information about what they were doing to keep children under 16 off their platforms.”

USEFUL STUFF

FOSS Linux: Linux on Older Hardware: The Complete Revival Guide (2026). “I have been reviving old hardware with Linux for the better part of a decade. The machines Windows 11 left behind are not trash. They are waiting for the right operating system. In this guide, I walk you through distro selection, RAM tuning, SSD upgrades, and browser optimization based on real testing, not guesswork.”

MakeUseOf: The compass app on your phone is not as reliable as you think. “You’ll notice that, outside of the magnetized needle, old-school compasses don’t typically feature magnetic metals. The compass chassis is often made out of plastic, and if it’s made out of metal, it is a non-magnetic metal like aluminum or brass. This is because other magnetic parts can interfere with the magnetized needle that helps the compass find magnetic north. When you think about all the magnetic components inside modern smartphones, it’s easy to understand how they might interfere with its compass utility.”

AROUND THE SEARCH & SOCIAL MEDIA WORLD

Vintage Aviation News: The Yorkshire Air Museum Receives Lottery Funding of £250k for Collections Project. “The Yorkshire Air Museum has secured a £249,227 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to support a major collections project at its historic RAF Elvington site. The funding will help enhance storage facilities, modernize collections management, and improve access to thousands of aviation-related artifacts, documents, and personal stories preserved in the museum’s archive.”

Tubefilter: Twitch says its ads–both pre- and mid-roll–aren’t getting longer. Viewers say otherwise.. “Whatever the explanation, though, the focus here should still be on the existence of pre-rolls. YouTube has them too, obviously, but YouTube runs on VODs. The content will still be there, unchanged, after a viewer sits through a 30-second ad. Twitch, on the other hand, relies on being able to get audience members into the stream in the moment, so they can experience what’s happening in real time.”

SECURITY & LEGAL

The Guardian: ‘It’s dangerous and it’s going to erode trust’: redesign of US government websites stokes surveillance fears. “An opaque White House office staffed largely by veterans of Elon Musk’s “department of government efficiency” (Doge) has quietly rebuilt some of the federal government’s most sensitive websites – for passport applications, voter registration, prescription-drug pricing and children’s savings – in ways critics say appear to violate federal law.”

Associated Press: The US lags other countries in social media restrictions for kids, but a reform push is growing. “A pair of landmark jury verdicts this year showed a way forward for holding tech companies accountable. And while the U.S. is nowhere near embracing social media bans for children like those seen from Australia to Indonesia, a push for regulation is simmering again in Congress.”

The Conversation: The hidden burnout crisis facing social media marketers. “We’re marketing researchers who study digital and social media wellness and teach the students who go on to fill these jobs. In a study published in September 2025, we interviewed social media marketers in the United States, Ireland, India, Germany and Australia and saw a profession quietly running on empty: passionate, creative people who are mentally drained by jobs that rarely turn off.”

Cornell Chronicle: Digital research repository arXiv to start new chapter as nonprofit. “When [Professor Paul] Ginsparg returned to Cornell as a professor in 2001, he brought the online research repository arXiv with him. And for 25 years it has remained at Cornell, where it has grown into a global clearinghouse for millions of research papers, accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Now, arXiv embarks on its next chapter: a transition to an independent nonprofit.” Good morning, Internet…
