PhD Scholarship Description

The ideal PhD candidate will work on a project on the development of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) gradient and RF coils for hybrid molecular - MRI imaging. He will perform experiments on the 7T MRI scanner and will do EM simulations to optimize MRI hardware. The PhD candidate will attend conferences and publish your results in scientific literature.

About the Research Lab

MEDISIP's research is situated in medical imaging science and is currently focusing on multimodality imaging. A complete multimodality small imaging lab (PET, SPECT, CT, MRI, US) has been setup during the last years for preclinical imaging. This setting allows accelerated development of new imaging technology. For a project on hybrid molecular (PET/SPECT/optical) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging we are looking for a PhD researcher to focus on the development of dedicated gradient and RF coils.

The K&SM Research Center, Department of Theoretical and Applied Science, University of Insubria (Italy) announces the availability of a Marie-Curie PhD Fellowship Position for Early-stage researchers in Online Social Networking technologies, with a focus on: Privacy, Risk Analysis and Trust Management in DOSNs.

The position is for up to three (3) years, starting in early 2013. The position is funded by the European Commission under the Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) program iSocial, which focuses on the design of distributed and scalable overlay networking and distributed storage infrastructures for open online social networks and for innovative social network applications that preserve end-user privacy and information ownership. Requirements, eligibility criteria and funding

Successful candidates are expected to join the Ph.D. program of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Science at the University of Insubria, to conduct original research under the supervision of Prof. Elena Ferrari and in collaboration with the principal investigators of iSocial, and to contribute actively to the activities planned of the project (scientific publications, taking courses, secondments, participation to meetings and events, preparation of educational material, coordination of work, etc.).

We seek candidates with experience and/or research interests in one or more of the following topics: privacy, risk analysis, trust management, social networks and distributed systems, machine learning, distributed processing and analysis of large data sets.

Preference will be given to highly motivated candidates with strong programming and analytical skills, excellent knowledge of English, and a proven commitment to their studies.

The working language will be English; knowledge of Italian is welcome but not required.

5 PhD positions in ultrasound guided therapy for treatment of cardiac arrhythmia's has been announced by the two leading players in cardiac ultrasound, GE Vingmed Ultrasound and the University of Leuven. The students will engage in ground breaking research with the longer term aim to develop products that can benefit patients suffering from arrhythmias worldwide.

A comprehensive training and research program has been put together involving transnational mobility in Norway and Leuven, as well as training events in the Swiss Alps (winter schools), Italy and Greece. In addition to being offered training by experts in the field and research supervision by leading academic researchers – the recruited researchers will be engaged in various outreach activities to the public.

PhD project description

“Ultrasound guided cardiac arrhythmia treatment” is an EU funded European Industrial Doctorate (EID) program. The project is a collaboration between GE Vingmed Ultrasound and the University of Leuven. There are two positions available as PhD students working for KU Leuven (and 3 more working for GE Vingmed Ultrasound, advertised separately). The students will be admitted to the KU Leuven PhD program, and supervised from both GE and KU Leuven. The research work will be conducted both in Leuven and Oslo (about 50-50%).

The research tasks include developing novel methods for ultrasound guided treatment of arrhythmias. The five PhD students that we seek will together span topics within image acquisition/acoustics, image processing/filtering, speckle tracking and 3D visualization.

Candidate requirements

The ideal PhD candidate should have a Master degree in Computer Science/ Engineering/ Mathematics/Physics. Additional advantage will be

Marie Curie PhD Position in Numerical Simulation, Valencia, Spain

A 3 year Marie Curie PhD position is available within the Research Centre in Vehicles Technology at the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering of the Universitat Politècnica de València (Valencia-Spain) on Integrating Numerical Simulation and Geometric Design Technology (INSIST). The selected candidate will be working in the area of automatic generation of Finite Element models from CT-scan data. Cartesian adapted meshes built over a hierarchical data structure will be used for accurate and computer-efficient models definition.

Description

The objective of the INSIST ITN is the development of the next generation of design/simulation methods based on isogeometric analysis. The idea of isogeometric analysis is to use the same functions that are used to approximate CAD models to approximate the unknown fields for engineering analysis and simulation. The key outcome of this research is a system/methodology that allows the analysis, simulation and design of engineering products in a more efficient way. We aim at extending the isogeometric analysis concept of Hughes and co-workers who focused on the unification of CAD and CAE whereas we intend to generalize this idea to unify pre-processing (in general) and analysis.

Candidate Requirements

A suitable candidate should have a degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or a closely related subject. They must have proven excellent programming and mathematical skills, and experience in discretization techniques (FEM, XFEM, GFEM). The successful candidate will participate in a research training network of an EU-funded Marie Curie ITN and will work in a highly interactive international environment with other Marie-Curie PhD students, researchers and industry and will execute part of the work during extended visits at the partner institutions outside Spain.

Aim

In this PhD project, a multi-scale model is developed which allows to define the optimal reactor configuration and process conditions for existing industrial free radical polymerization (FRP) processes and to support the development of new functional polymer materials using controlled radical polymerization (CRP).

Description of the PhD Project

Radical polymerization (RP) allows the industrial production of a wide range of commodity and engineering polymers. Further optimization of these production processes on an economical and/or property basis requires a thorough understanding of the interaction between chemical reaction kinetics and physical transport phenomena on the industrial scale. In particular, the polymer industry strives after the optimal strategy to control the chain length distribution (CLD) and end-group functionality of the polymer molecules allowing post-polymer modification.

Requirements

Applicants must possess a MSc in Chemical Engineering or related subject and a TOEFL certificate (minimum score of 580 (paper) /92 (iBT) /237 (computer)) or equivalent. Relevant experience in the area of reactor engineering, kinetics, and/or computational chemistry is strongly recommended. Candidates must have a strong mathematical background and be willing to focus on obtaining quantitative rather than qualitative results. Excellent candidates with a PhD in the above domains and willing to spend between 1 and 3 years at LCT can also apply for a postdoctoral fellowship.

Job Description

In order to obtain a deep understanding of future environment/ecosystem interactions in tropical ecosystems a long-term perspective of the interaction between climate changes, human impact and vegetation dynamics is needed. Despite this the majority of research projects dealing with conservation and rehabilitation of tropical biodiversity and ecosystems are based on short-term datasets rarely spanning more than the century timescale. A multi-proxies approach will be applied in order to better correlate and interpreted the results obtain from the singular palaeoecological method. The student will work on pollen surface samples and sediment cores, data analysis and interpretation of the pollen and spore data with the aim to obtain a detailed reconstruction of the vegetation, climate and environmental changes in Indonesia.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants are expected to have/gain a master or diploma in biology or related disciplines, knowledge and experience with palynological work methods, multivariate data analysis, interpretation of pollen and spores data, and data processing software programs. Teamwork, availability for periods of fieldwork in the tropics, good knowledge of English (mother tongue, equivalent knowledge or TOEFL minimum score 80 or IELTS minimum score 6 valid certification) and a willingness to work in an international research environment is also expected.
Interviews will be hold in Goettingen with the selected candidates in the first two weeks of March at the latest.

The Computational Mechanics and Numerical Mathematics unit at the University of Groningen has a vacancy for a postdoc or PhD student. The associated unit is active in computational fluid dynamics and solution methods for large sparse nonlinear systems.

Description

In the project we will use a combination of direct numerical simulation, stochastic parameterization of the effects of meso-scale eddies, techniques from the theory of random dynamical systems and data-assimilation methods to analyze the flows in one and two-layer shallow water models of the Kuroshio Current. Ensemble methods will be used to investigate the predictability of the Kuroshio path transitions, including a study of the impact of specific observations, in deterministic and stochastic models. The researcher (postdoc or PhD student) will concentrate on the stochastic parameterization of meso-scale eddies and the numerical techniques to tackle the stochastic partial differential equations efficiently. The PhD student will also follow a number of courses to improve his/her professional skills and to widen the scientific horizon.

Requirements

Candidates should: hold a PhD degree (for the postdoc position) or a Msc degree (for the PhD postion) in applied mathematics or physics, have a good knowledge of numerical mathematics, have good programming skills, have a potential to carry out creative and independent research, be fluent in the English language (written and verbal). For the postdoc position the candidate should have accepted publications in the peer-reviewed literature. Experience with stochastic modeling and/or CFD is considered an advantage. The successful candidate should be available to start not later than April 1, 2012.

Conditions of employment

Postdoc: The candidate is offered a full-time position for one year with a possible extension of 21 months.
PhD position: The assignment is for 4 years (maximum) and includes an assessment after the first year. It is a temporary assignment for a period of 4 years. First, you will get a temporary position of 1,5 years with the perspective of prolongation with another 2,5 years. After the first year, there will be an evaluation as to the feasibility of successful completion of the PhD thesis within the next three years.

The Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki, is the leading centre for teaching and research in chemistry in Finland. Laboratory of Physical Chemistry is one of the nine divisions in the Department of Chemistry. Altogether 30 people work at the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry.

Candidate Requirements

The successful candidate will have a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physics, Medicine or a related field. Practical experience in experimental laboratory research is appreciated. Good English language skills are required.

An appointee to the position of Doctoral Student shall hold a second-cycle degree and have an approved research proposal. Other requirements shall include the ability and motivation, as demonstrated in previous degree studies or otherwise, to pursue postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree according to the study plan and research proposal. Description of PhD thesis

The main purpose of this PhD is to develop an integrated framework for the human articulations functional analysis. Different criteria should be considered to create an efficient and accurate simulation model. In addition to the volumetric meshes generated from the anatomical models, the subject-specific joint kinematics and dynamics and the relevant mechanical properties of anatomical structures (non-linearity, viscoelasticity, etc.) have to be considered.

The thesis will include training periods at some sites of the European partners of this network.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants will ideally have a background in computer science / engineering, Mathematics, Physics or Electrical engineering. Strong knowledge in mechanics and physics, programming skills (C/C++), and communication skills are essential for the project. Previous knowledge of Finite Element Modeling (FEM) and VTK/ITK libraries is an asset. Satisfactory levels in geometry and statistics is needed. Good English written and spoken is mandatory.

Criteria on nationality, age and qualification apply. The candidate must preferably be citizen of the European Union.

Researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.

A 4-year PhD Position in physical oceanography is available with the Geophysical Institute of the University of Bergen, Norway in association with the Centre for Climate Dynamics at the Bjerknes Centre.

The research will constitute a PhD study with the overall objective to understand and quantify the role of the floating Antarctic ice shelves in the ocean climate system and the sea level change. Students willing to apply for the NUS PhD-MBA programme are requested to do so online via Admissions Page.

Candidates should submit the following documents

Academic transcripts
Recommendation letters (two academic required, one industrial optional)
PhD-MBA admissions essay
Statement of purpose
Research proposal
Application form
Declaration form
Resume
TOEFL (only if native language or language of University instruction is/was not English)
GRE general score
GMAT score (for shortlisted candidates)
