Knowledge Transfer is also Relevant for Arts and Humanities

A report published in June by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Leading the World: The Economic Impact of UK Arts and Humanities Research, attempts to address this misconception. “The impact of arts and humanities research goes far beyond the reaches of academia,” it claims.

The study highlights examples of the profitable work that academics are doing with business, industry and the culture sector. It cites an essay by Mary Beard, the renowned University of Cambridge classicist, who demonstrated that UK academic research into Greek and Latin had fed directly into a variety of plays that deal with classical themes and which have enjoyed commercial success, such as Tony Harrison’s 2008 production of Fram at the Olivier Theatre in London. Research carried out in the academy by historians of religion adds to an awareness of our religious past, with this knowledge providing, the report says, a “valuable corrective” to simplistic, short-term solutions to present-day religious and political problems, and offers context for debates about British identity

Successful British Academy Grant

Congratulations to Dr Rachel Taylor and Dr Peter Mayer who have recently been successful in obtaining funding from the British Academy for £6,190. The project title is “The development of committment to subordinate and super-ordinate social groups.”

The project will explore the way in which members of real-world groups become committed group members, and how this is maintained over time. Rugby supporters have been chosen as participants for this project, because they have a choice as to which team to support, at least at the club and regional level. Supporter committment at these levels may be contrasted with support for the national team, as membership of this group is not self-selected but is instead decided by nationality. However, as well as differences in support between club and national teams, we also expect people to see clubs at each level of the playing structure in a different way.

The project itself will comprise a large scale survey as well as a series of interviews and focus groups with rugby supporters at all levels - from small local clubs to national sides.

Research Supervision Training: 23 April 2008 (12pm-2pm)

The aim of the seminar is to keep staff up to date with the QAA code of practice relating to PGR degree programmes and how we are complying with them.
It is a great opportunity to meet, share and talk about issues that you may have or want resolved. The seminar will also outline the responsibilities of both supervisor and student, give advice on how to deal with complaints, appeals, procedures and any concerns supervisors may have with supervisory or
examination issues etc.

The seminar will be of relevance to experienced supervisors, relatively new supervisors and those who wish to supervise in the future, as it is now
compulsory to attend training before embarking on supervision. Previous
training will also be taken into account at Research Application Panels, when allocating students to supervisors.

The seminar will be led by Professor Mike Wilson (Chair of RPSG) in the GBC between 12pm-2pm with lunch provided. If you would like to reserve a place

University Research Investment Scheme

The University of Glamorgan is pleased to announce the launch of the University Research Investment Scheme. The University Research Investment Scheme (URIS) supports research within the University of Glamorgan across it's five Higher Education Faculties, namely, Humanities and Social Sciences, Advanced Technology, Health, Sport and Science, Business School and Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries. Applications from staff from CeLL, CELT, RWCMD and other support areas will also be considered. A strategy is also being developed to extend the Scheme to those further education colleges that deliver the University's HE courses in their colleges.
The URIS has been established using the University's top slice of QR funding and the internal match funding. The RIS was established by the Pro Vice Chancellor (Research) and will be administered by the Central Research Office. The total amount of funding available in the URIS will be £400,000 for 2007-2008. Any one grant will not exceed £10,000 (non FEC direct costs only). Match funding from the Faculty or other sources will be looked upon favourably.
The URIS is intended to provide financial support for University of Glamorgan academics to develop research projects of international quality. We provide a number of different schemes designed to support the varying needs of the research community at the University and its partner colleges, and to support the strategic development of research. The URIS will operate on similar principles to the UK Research Councils with specific calls for proposals in different modes and a transparent evaluative procedure for applications.

Purpose of the Fund
The purpose of the University Research Investment Scheme is to stimulate research and publication activity, particularly amongst newly research-active staff, and in particular to encourage interdisciplinary research within and between Faculties.

Scope
The URIS consists of different schemes, namely,
1. Responsive Mode. Up to a maximum of £10,000 to start up new research projects with a view to developing applications for external funding. The normal duration of a grant will be 12 - 18 months.
2. Directed Mode. Up to a maximum of £10,000 for interdisciplinary research which spans more than one Faculty and is specifically in one of the following areas:
Disaster Relief and Emergency Response
Sustainable Community Development
Enterprise
Education, specifically Higher Education Pedagogy

The programme is designed to encourage excellence and to deliver contributions which are directly relevant to the University's Research and Scholarship Strategy. The normal duration of a grant will be 12 - 18 months.

3. New Researcher Mode. Up to a maximum of £10,000 to support academics who have not previously made an application to an external funding body, pump priming to facilitate such an application.

4. Accredited F.E. College Mode. For research in partnership with one or more F.E. colleges. An exploratory study will be made for the F. E. College Mode before inviting bids.

5. Work Based Research. For Part time research students based in their place of employment.

Deadlines
Schemes 1, 2, 3 and 5 are now open for bidding. A panel of reviewers selected from the University's Peer Review College will meet on the 17th December to assess applications. The deadline for applications to be considered by this panel is 3rd December.
