Not only can you reap a decent share of the financial returns, should an artist’s career take off – you can also get exclusive artist access, a copy of the completed album and even your name on the album sleeve.  There’s also a music trading exchange where investors can trade in and out of various artists.  (This exchange is for non-US residents only)  

As of now there is only a handful of artists to consider, but if this idea takes off – Slice the Pie could become a global marketplace where many musicians get their start.  If you check out the “fully financed artists” section you will see that 27 acts have already been fully funded.  Some of these acts have garnered a large sum of money to launch their career.  It will be interesting to see what percentage of Slice the Pie artists actually succeed and make a profit for their investors.  If you don’t want to invest in an artist, you can get paid to review artists as well.  The input received from music fans is obviously a valuable entity and Slice the Pie rewards you for this input!

The most basic goal for anyone trying to establish themselves in the ‘make money online’ niche should be to drive traffic to their site. Without traffic, you don’t have conversions – people clicking on your ads or buying your products — and without conversions you don’t have income. 

How do you drive traffic to your site, then? How do you get the sort of traffic that the “gurus” get? How do you start from no visitors and end up with thousands every day? 

There’s no one answer – anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to sell you something. It takes good content, lots of effort, and commitment. But you can produce certain content that will drive exponentially more traffic than other content. 

And what content is that? Earnings reports. 

If you aren’t familiar with earnings reports, you can take a look at an example of one on my site: Make Money Online Road. 

It seems counter-intuitive that the one thing that seems to offer so little value to your readers would drive so much traffic, but think about it a little differently. 

What is one thing that people really need to make money online? Commitment. They need to post consistently, invest the time, make the effort – that’s the only way to build a loyal reader base. To maintain that level of commitment, they need inspiration and hope – they need to see that success is possible. That’s what earnings reports show them. 

Earnings reports were what drove me to start my own site. I saw that people like Darren Rowse of Problogger, Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income and, of course, Michael-John Wolfe of Residuals and Royalties were making real money online. But not only did I see they were making real money, I saw how they were making money. It’s one thing for someone to say “I make thousands of dollars every month with my site” – and many do – but it’s another to show exactly how they make that money. It lends credibility to their claims and illustrates how you can replicate their results. 

One thing I enjoyed about ResidualsAndRoyalties.com was the comprehensive breakdown of where Michael-John’s income came from. I think it’s a model to emulate and I’ve attempted to do so on my site. When writing my own earnings reports, I’ve decided to follow a few guidelines that I’d like to share:

• Offer detail. I list all my revenue sources and expenses in as much detail as I feel comfortable with. That means an itemized list of every single source I attempt to generate income with and every single expense directly incurred through the operation of my site.
• Give concrete figures. I’ve always preferred reading earnings reports when they provide exact numbers. In other words, how much money did you earn through Adsense, how much through affiliate marketing, etc?
• Use pictures. I haven’t had the opportunity to do this yet, but the most successful earnings reports offer photographic evidence to support their claims. Show a picture of your check from Adsense and blur out the confidential parts – it’ll lend credibility to you and your site.

So, what’s the take-away from this post?

First, earnings reports drive traffic. The top sites in the ‘make money online’ niche prominently feature earnings reports and they are often some of the most visited posts on the site.

Second, there’s a good reason for this. People need inspiration and hope to maintain a commitment and they need commitment to make money online. Earnings reports may actually be some of the most valuable types of content you can offer your readers.

Third, earnings reports are easy to write and require adherence to only a few guidelines to be successful.

If you have your own site, then try writing your own earnings reports. If you don’t have your own site yet but are considering it, check out some earnings reports on successful ‘make money online’ blogs and see just how much money you can make.

The free versions went live last night at about 9 PM Mountain Time and in only nine hours we’ve had about 140 downloads.  So we are hoping that free is the way to go.  We earned .79 cents in the short time it has been live – this is where the comparison between paid apps and free apps will really be discovered.  It will be interesting to see if we really can earn more income with a free app versus a paid app.It doesn’t make sense why they paid versions were ranked so highly in the Entertainment section (they’re still listed there!) and had such meager sales.  This makes me wonder how others with successful apps are really earning so much money each day?  Maybe there is some major factor that I am missing?

I will be including these terms in a dummy paragraph below.  These are the top twenty terms that were listed this morning on Google Trends.  What I will do is bold each term and also use tagaroo to tag each term in this post.  Then we will see, by using my blog’s analytics – how many visits that I received to the Residuals and Royalties blog over the weekend that were a direct result of these hot search terms.  I will come back to this post on Monday and give you the results.  So here is my paragraph… 

It was announced in the Kayla Manson today show that Russell Crowe died while doing a google background check.  Many people were very disappointed with this news and a few people even decided not to attend the Blackhawks parade.  One attendee, named mister Arthur Laffer was checking out the parade float that was shaped like carcharodon megalodon and he decided that he’d rather go home and check out the world cup tv schedule.  My friends Jeff Koons and Jeremy Roenick were drinking a skinny girl margarita when they found out that the Kayla Today Show was doing a special on heightism.  The show was having a special guest star named Tom Otterness and he was doing a scene from the Upright Citizens Brigade.  Tom announced that he was joining the Pac 10 and he and Anita Baker were then going out to eat Jimmy Johns and to look for missing sailor Abby Sunderland.

I am guessing that Apple will be pretty particular about which blogs feeds they accept, but for successful blogs – getting accepted should not be a problem.  Imagine how many more readers you can reach by providing them with a free downloadable app that will allow them to access your new content right from their phone at any given time.  

iSites will do a blog conversion to an iPhone app for only $25 a month.  I am having a hard time deciphering their pricing, their pricing page shows a yearly price of $299 a year – so I am guessing that you can either pay in full for the year or pay a month subscription fee.  I am considering submitting the Residuals and Royalties blog to this service, especially if I can generate some ad revenue on my blog through a service like AdMobs.  There is a $99 fee from iSites if you want to integrate AdMobs on your blog’s iphone app. 

Once your blog is a live app, users can have full use of all of your blog’s functionality including the ability to comment, tweet and buzz up your blog posts.  If this catches on, I am sure we will see many of the upper echelon blogs appearing as apps on the app store.  I just wonder how apple will view this influx of new apps.   I’d like to thank Residuals and Royalties reader Rick McBride for bringing this service to my attention.  It seems I am getting more and more emails from readers who let me in on new and exciting websites and money making opportunities.

iBlood Test is a humorous app that lets you test others for a variety of STD’s by drawing blood and running lab tests.  Users simply place the iBlood Test needle up to their patient’s arm and draw back the syringe.  Within seconds a centrifuge starts processing the information and a blood test results page will list any diseases that the patient tested positive for.  iBlood Test screens for various diseases like Herpes, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and more.  At the end of the test, a Petri dish shows the diseases and bacteria laughing back at you! 

Russ also made a kid’s version of iBlood Test that eliminates the adult subject matter.  With iBlood Test Kids, they get tested for everything from Alien Plague to Zombieosis!  All in all we will have four versions of iBlood Test available on the app store – iBlood Test, iBlood Test FREE, iBlood Test Kids, iBlood Test Kids FREE.  Right now we are holding off on the free versions.

When doing my research for this app, I did not find anything even remotely similar to iBlood Test available on the app store.  I have no way of predicting how well this app will do, but I have seen many other humorous apps break into the top 50 in their category.  One example is an app called Stool Scanner which you can check out here: Stool Scanner.  Now, if this app made the top 25 (which it did at one point) – you can’t tell me that iBlood Test cannot have similar results!

One of the crucial points in a new app’s life is the initial feedback it gets from the first few people who download it.  A few one star ratings can send a new app plummeting and conversely, a few five star ratings can quickly build buzz for a new app.  This is where you come in.  I rarely ask anything of my readers – but today I am asking you for a favor.  If you have an iPhone, please take the time to download  iBlood Test or iBlood Test Kids and if you feel we deserve it – give us a positive review and a 5 star rating.  This would really help get iBlood Test off to the right start!  

Russ and I purchased a small block of AdMob’s advertisements that will be displayed on other apps.  Hopefully these ads will attract people enough to visit iBlood Test in the app store and take the time to download it.  I am also doing additional marketing for the app, which includes building a website and emailing all of the app review websites in hopes of a positive review.  

This is a crossroads for me when it comes to pursuing and developing iPhone apps.  Should iBlood Test fail, chances are that I won’t be creating other apps.  But if we succeed and create some nice residual income, I have no problem investing those earnings into additional iPhone apps.  It’s not that I would be “giving up” should iBlood Test fail; it is just that I know that of the 40 or 50 ideas that I came up with – iBlood Test was by far the best and most unique.  If this one doesn’t make it – those others certainly don’t stand a chance.

As far as the positive items go, nothing really stands out - my ebook did $125 for the month, which is not too bad.  My other earners like eHow, Shutterstock, iStockPhoto all remained consistent.  On a negative note, my CashCrate earnings have simply plummeted – $65.22 is a far cry from the $182.97 that I made just two months ago.  I am not sure what else I can do to create more earnings from CashCrate.  Even though I am down almost $300 from last month, I have a good feeling about June and my goal is to obliterate my best earnings record of $1,070.45.  Also, our new iPhone app goes live very soon and I have high hopes for this one!  Below is my earnings report for May, 2010…

The creator of iFart, Joel Comm had brazenly posted his earnings on his blog for all of the world to see and it’s no wonder that there are over 500 results that appear when you search the word “fart” on the iPhone app store.  Joel may have shot himself in the foot by releasing his sales figures so early, because a whole hoard of competition appeared with similar fart style apps over the next two years.  Still, those competitors haven’t kept iFart from it’s enormous success and even today, two years later – iFart is still steadily downloaded on iPhones all over the world. 

Here are the sales figures for iFart during that famous December of 2008…

12/12 – 75 units – #70 entertainment
12/13 – 296 units – #16 entertainment
12/14 – 841 units – #76 overall, #8 entertainment
12/15 – 1510 units – #39 overall, #5 entertainment
12/16 – 1797 units – #22 overall, #3 entertainment
12/17 – 2836 units – #15 overall, #3 entertainment
12/18 – 3086 units – #10 overall, #3 entertainment
12/19 – 3117 units – #9 overall, #2 entertainment
12/20 – 5497 units, – #4 overall, #2 entertainment
12/21 – 9760 units – #2 overall, #1 entertainment

On Christmas day Joel Comm earned $27,249 in net residual income from iFart’s nearly 34,000 downloads.  What a day this must have been!  Is this type of success possible in today’s iPhone market?  I doubt it.  In fact, with major players like video game manufacturers and movie studios getting into the mix, the ability for a novelty app to have this kind of success may not be possible in today’s market.  Last I heard, there were over 180,000 apps available in the app store.  How many apps were available in the app store back in December of 2008?  My guess is MUCH less than today, which means that iFart had limited competition and a much greater chance of getting downloaded.  Besides this fact, free apps were not as prominent back then and the idea of a free version of iFart was not even a consideration.  At a price of only .99 cents – downloading iFart required no second thought from the millions of iPhone users across the globe.

The fact is, Joel Comm was a fortunate pioneer in novelty app creation at a time when the window for success was wide open.  That window is rapidly closing, but the question is…how do we find the next window of opportunity and take advantage of it in its youth?  Could that new opportunity already exist?  Could it be iPad apps?  Could it be the Android market?  Could it be a completely different market?  If anyone knows the answer, please tell us about it!  How much money has the iFart app earned since it’s release?  We may never know the answer – but my guess is that the total is well over one million dollars.
