A tapestry of voices compiled from 15 individuals’ monologues. A touching portrait of the London Borough of Southwark.

This radio feature was produced to compliment and promote the recent One Southwark photoraphy and sound exhibition held at The Menier Gallery, SE1.

One Southwark comprised of carefully chosen subjects that reflected the diversity of Southwark’s 260,000 residents. The project was a collaboration between Southwark Council, the photographer Rehan Jamil, and Resonance FM.

Together the pair encounter a trio of cockney doggers whilst searching for entrances to the underworld. Finally, in the Bicycle Graveyard a ritual is performed…

Hooting Yard: The Puckington Tunnels

It was a big fort, with delightful crenellations, and many flags, and it had the shiniest portcullis outside of Navarre. This was Fort Hoity, sister fort of Fort Toity, and an extremely interesting fort in its own right. For underneath Fort Hoity ran the Puckington Tunnels, those tunnels you may have come across in your reading, if, that is, you have been reading about tunnelling systems as a change from your usual diet of chicklit, gitlit, and zadiesmithlit.

David Aaronovitch is a writer, broadcaster and commentator on international politics and the media. He started his media career in television, working as a producer on ITV's Weekend World, and The BBC's On The Record. He has previously written for The Guardian, The Observer and The Independent, winning numerous accolades, including Columnist of the Year 2003 and the Orwell prize for journalism in 2001. As a broadcaster he has appeared on the satirical TV current affairs programme Have I Got News For You and made radio broadcasts on historical topics. David is currently a regular columnist for The Times. David's latest book is Voodoo Histories: The Role of the Conspiracy Theory in Shaping Modern History.

It takes a special kind of show to carry off two comebacks in three weeks but here we are. After a one-week hiatus to take stock, hire and fire, One Life Left returns rejuvenated, reshaped. All three presenters are back, too. Seriously, someone needs to have a word with HR. Still, One Life Left isn't just Ste, Simon and Ann doing their best to make silence sound inviting. The show would be nothing without fabulous features submitted by listeners, and Episode 2 contains some of the very best. Hooting Yard: Inky Puck Stampings

In his later years, Blodgett amassed a collection of inky puck stampings, kept in an album bound in the starch-stiffened fleece of a lamb. The fleece was spotted with unexplained bloodstains which Blodgett made no attempt to remove. He could have used a patent bloodstain eradication spray goo as manufactured by Don Federico’s Royal And Ancient Portugese Spray And Paste Company, but he chose not to. Boffins in a lab were recently given the opportunity to scrape minuscule quantities of the blood off the binding. When they subjected it to tests, they were able positively to identify it as the blood of a fruitbat. Curious indeed, but no more curious than much else about Blodgett’s later years.

This man is not on holiday. He is a war hero who has had his young daughter taken away from him and put into care. He had been serving in Gulf War I and II and decorated with a silver star and 5 purple hearts. He cut his thumb off with a chainsaw just before I met up with him in a campsite in Vermont. We hear of his war adventures and meet up with his blind Vietnam Vet buddy. Scott lives in a trailer worth $1000 with his wife - he has no job now - there are many like him.

We also hear an exerpt of an inpromptu gathering of 60 bluegrass musicians who meet up in Nothern Idaho each year to play together.

Finally, James wins $1:60 in a first nation run Casino on the Canadian border.

One Life Left -- s05e01 -- #97 -- Guess Who's Back?

Guess who's back, guess who's back, guess who's back, guess who's back...

For the newcomers: One Life Left is back. What? Oh! It's a radio show about videogames. It's presented by Ste Curran, Simon Byron and Ann Scantlebury. Ste and Simon both work in the videogame industry and have done forever. Ann, after close to a hundred episodes, now knows what a videogame is. We assume. Possibly.

We broadcast on FM radio, courtesy of the brilliant Resonance FM, in the United Kingdom on Monday evenings and podcast the show later that night. We don't talk about videogames all the time and we try to be inclusive. Lots of our listeners don't play videogames all that much, just like Ann. Some of them don't play at all.

For the veterans: Oh, wow. Tonight was totally fun and we've missed you. Promise.

Season 5 Episode 1 contains: Ste, Ann, Simon and a very special guest. News about videogames, Music that sounds like videogames, four tiny features loosely themed around videogames. Lots of chat about E3, some chat about Ann's cat. That sort of thing.

Neil Denny and Seth talk about combating AIDS denialism.

Seth C. Kalichman is a Clinical-Community Psychologist and a Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Connecticut. He is also the Director of the Southeast HIV/AIDS Research and Evaluation (SHARE) Project in Atlanta Georgia and Cape Town South Africa. Dr. Kalichman has dedicated his life to preventing HIV infections and reducing the emotional and physical harms caused by the scourge of AIDS. His research is fully supported by the National Institutes of Health and he serves on numerous national (US) and international AIDS prevention panels.

He is the Editor-in-Chief of the scholarly journal AIDS and Behavior, and is the author of a number of books, the latest being Denying AIDS: Conspiracy Theories, Pseudoscience and Human Tragedy. All royalties from Denying AIDS are donated for the purchase of HIV treatments for people in Africa.

Dr. Kalichman was the 1997 recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology in Health awarded by the American Psychological Association and he was the 2005 Distinguished Scientist of the Society for Behavioural Medicine.

David Eagleman is is a neuroscientist at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas, where he directs the Laboratory for Perception and Action and the Initiative on Neuroscience and Law. He is best known for his work on time perception, synesthesia and neurolaw. He is also a fiction writer. David's most recent book is Sum: Forty Tales From the Afterlives.

Simon Singh is an author, journalist and TV Producer, specializing in science and mathematics. Simon studied physics at Imperial College, London before completing a PhD in particle physics at Cambridge University and at CERN Geneva. In 1990 he joined the BBC's Science and Features Department, where he was a producer and director working on programmes such as Tomorrow's World and Horizon.

Simon has previously written two best-selling books, Fermat's Last Theorem and The Code Book, for which he subsequently produced and presented television adaptations for Channel 4, and then another best-seller, Big Bang: The Most Important Scientific Discovery of All Time and Why You Need to Know About It. Simon's latest book, co-authored with Edzard Ernst, is Trick or Treatment?: Alternative Medicine on Trial. Simon has been our guest on Little Atoms twice.

Philippe Sands QC has been Professor of Law at University College London since 2002 and has also taught at Boston College Law School, Cambridge University and New York University Law School. He is the author of the acclaimed Lawless World: Making and Breaking Global Rules as well as several other books on international law. He participated in the negotiation of the 1992 Climate Change Convention and the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. He is a practicing barrister at Matrix Chambers and has been involved in leading cases before English and international courts, including those concerning Senator Augusto Pinochet and the Guantanamo and Belmarsh detainees. Philippe's latest book is Torture Team: Uncovering War Crimes in the Land of the Free.
