Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, is a thriving desert city which is a fantastic holiday destination. With amazing
shopping, high end luxury resorts, water parks and festivals and excellent
amenities, there is something on offer every hour of the day. One of the great things about
Dubai is the fact that visitors can enjoy a wide range of thrilling activities
and outdoor sports. There are some super cheap flights to be had just now, so pack a hat, your favourite sun screen and be prepared to be amazed by this astonishing city.

Sand Sea and Watersports
Dubai is
home to some of the most beautiful white sandy beaches in the world. The ocean
temperatures are warm and inviting, and there are even a few waves. The ocean can be a
great place to go swimming, but be warned that it is quite salty! Take a beach walk in the evening when its a little cooler, and you'll see many people
rollerblading along the seafront promenade.

Dubai is a
popular location for scuba diving, and there are many interesting ship wreck
diving sites that can be visited on a boat ride from the city. You could also
take a day trip from Dubai to the East Coast Emirate of Fujairah for excellent
diving on coral reefs where many species of marine life make their home.

Dubai is
also an ideal location for water-skiing, sailing, kayaking, parasailing, wake
boarding, body boarding and other thrilling water sports, as there are several
tour companies that offer these activities for visitors.

Snow Can Be Arranged
The snowy
sport of skiing might be the last thing you picture doing in the hot desert
climate of Dubai, but you can now visit Dubai’s amazing indoor skiing centre.
It is located in the Mall of the Emirates and offers a chance to ski and
snowboard down a huge indoor slope. All equipment is available to rent, and warm
jackets are supplied. This is a great place to escape if you are feeling
overwhelmed by the sweltering heat of Dubai, as the temperature inside is a
chilly minus four degrees Celsius!

Get Out The Golf Clubs
Golf is a
very popular pastime in Dubai, and the city contains many excellent courses. The
Emirates Golf Club is a stunning course and is the home of the annual Dubai
Desert Classic. There is also the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club which is a challenging
par-72 course with a gorgeous clubhouse. There is even a golf course designed
by Tiger Woods himself! Tee times at the many prestigious courses in Dubai go
quickly, so it is a good idea to book in advance.

These are
just a few of the many exciting active adventures you can enjoy while visiting
Dubai.

Top Gear, the BBC
entertainment driving programme, recently did a price comparison between
driving your car at a ‘track day’ and taking up golf. After the usual high jinks that make the
programme so popular around the world, Jeremy Clarkson and his side-kicks
claimed that golf was extremely expensive and should really only be taken up by
boring old men. I beg to differ on a
number of fronts. Firstly, setting
yourself up with all the golf gear is not that expensive. There are hundreds of sites that offer great
discounts on new and second-hand equipment that can help you get started. Plus, if you’ve never swung a club there some
equally good deals when it comes to getting some lessons to set you on your way
to golfing greatness.

But once you have
caught the bug (and you will catch once you start) you want to spread your
wings and play golf in other places that are slightly more beautiful than the
local public course; and that, in fairness, is where things can start to get
expensive. I have been incorporating
golf into holidays for some time now, but recently some friends and I decided
to go on a proper golf holiday where we play pretty much every day.

The research came
up with the usual golfing hotspots; Spain, Portugal, Ireland and South Africa,
but all of them, while being wonderful countries to visit, were a bit out of
our league when it came to a week’s golf.
Then we were sat in the pub with some other friends when one of them
came out with, “what about Turkey? A
bloke from work has just come back and said it was the most amazing golfing
destination he’s ever been to”. Turkey,
we pondered – doesn’t sound like the sort of place we are looking for, but
after some initial research we soon changed our tune.

We started
talking to Golf Turkey and thought this has to be too good to be true. The initial price of £500 for an
all-inclusive stay, including return flights from Gatwick to Belek with Thomas
Cook, at the Cornelia Diamond Hotel and Golf resort seemed crazy especially as
it included two rounds of golf. So we
did some more research. Tthe Cornelia
was home to the Sir Nick Faldo designed course which was made up of three nine
hole courses – The King, The Queen and The Prince – that you play in different
ways to make up your 18 holes and the pictures looked amazing.

We then checked the rest of the hotel on
TripAdvisor; again, excellent reviews so we decided to take the plunge. On arrival the
weather was amazing and we soon realised the hotel was enormous, yet
brilliantly run and that the food and drinks (all inclusive remember) were
‘historic’ as Michael Winner would say.
Then we got to the golf courses and we were not let down – it was as
close to playing Augusta National as we have ever had. In fact, it was so good that we booked extra
rounds which just went to show how good a deal we had originally because we
found out they were 100 euros per person.
We didn’t care, we just wanted to play.

When we weren’t
on the golf course we were relaxing by the pool, recuperating in the spa or
getting fit in the gym. The evenings
were slightly less healthy as we drank a lot of beer, wine and vodka and ate a
lot of food, but what are you meant to do when you’re not handing over any
money?! We’ve booked to
go again already and given the option of driving round a race track with Jezza
and pals or spending a week in the sun playing golf in the most unlikely yet
brilliant destination, I know where I would rather be. And on that bombshell…

However, the JFK Clubhouse is not available to everyone flying Virgin, you need to be travelling in Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class or be a Flying Club Gold member to indulge in and enjoy all the benefits of Virgin Atlantic’s red carpet treatment.

Virgin Atlantic’s new clubhouse is more than double the size of its previous JFK airport lounge, at 10,000 square feet there’s plenty of space for passenger’s to relax and unwind before their flight.

No expense has been spared with the new Clubhouse re-build costing an eye watering $7 million, but then we are talking about travelling in the most stylish and luxurious way that Virgin Atlantic know only too well how to excel at. As with Virgin Atlantic’s approach to all its clubhouses, it is unmistakably Virgin, with the JFK Clubhouse design reflecting a completely uptown style as per the city it’s located in.

The focal point of the new lounge is the uptown cocktail bar set in the central park lounge. Given all Virgin Atlantic flights departing JFK’s terminal 4 are in the evening, this area is for kicking back and relaxing with one of their signature cocktails. Although given the sheer size of the overall lounge and its many different areas, there’s no chance of people invading your space, as there’s plenty of room for everyone to spread out. In addition to complementary drinks there’s an extensive menu for food, which is available from any location within the Clubhouse, as well as having the choice to eat in its brasserie should you prefer to dine more formally.

A further focal point is the huge windows located on both sides of the lounge, providing amazing views over the airport apron and the Virgin Atlantic aircraft sitting at their gates preparing for take-off.
Another area customers can enjoy using is Virgin Atlantic’s entertainment zone that includes a billiards table. There’s also the Clubhouse spa, which is only the second Virgin Atlantic Club lounge to feature a spa other than London. Virgin Atlantic have partnered with Bumble and bumble, a renowned New York City salon and product company. Virgin passengers will have the opportunity to purchase Bumble and bumble products as well as them being available for customers to use in the Clubhouse showers. It’s also worth highlighting this is the only hair salon available at any business class lounge across the US.

All in all, if you have the opportunity to experience Virgin Atlantic’s JFK Clubhouse – take it, you won’t be disappointed, and that’s only the start of their red carpet service if you’re lucky enough to be flying Upper class too!

For many Malaga is merely the airport for holidays to the Costa Del Sol and holiday makers often fail to visit and explore the city.

The city is not only a paradise for sunseekers. It has lots of cultural attractions to offer too. Malaga has been occupied for millennia and has been an important centre for everyone from the Phoenicians to the Romans to the Moors. After the Moorish invasion in 711 AD, it was a major port in that empire and though it is centuries since the Moors lost out to the Christians, signs of this heritage can still be seen.

The Alcazaba

Public domain image/Delbarre Cedric/Wikimedia

One of the city's most famous landmarks is the Alcazaba an 11th century Moorish castle and fort located in the centre of the city. It's the best preserved building of its type in Spain and is certainly worth the walk up the hill. Don't forget to take plenty of water - those Spanish summers are scorching. When you reach the top you get a panoramic view of the city and the gardens - and you can even have a look at archaeological artefacts.

Roman Theatre

The Alcazaba also offers access to a location dating to an earlier period in the city's history - the Roman era. There is a Roman Theatre just below the Alcazaba and though partly ruined, it still retains some of its former grandeur. Sitting on the stone steps is a pleasant experience and you can find out more about its history via the attached exhibits and a short film.

Castillo de Gibralfaro

If you're still thirsting for more Malaga city views, then consider visiting the Alcazaba's twin, the Castillo de Gibralfaro. It's a fair trek up the hill to find out more about the military history of the city and see more stunning views, but it might well be worth it. If you have to choose, the Alcazaba is slightly more accessible.

Malaga Cathedral

Malaga Cathedral is built on the ruins of a mosque. It's a beautiful Renaissance building constructed between 1528 and 1782. In fact, it's still not quite finished - part of the south tower was never completed. This is a majestic building with a baroque facade, well worth a trip if you're in the city centre.

Picasso's Work

Finally, don't miss the chance to check out the birthplace of one of the best known artists of the 20th century - Pablo Picasso. You will get the chance to see some of his early work, then you can take a trip to the Picasso Museum to see his later work. A must-see if you're an art lover visiting Malaga.
It is a magnificent 10 metre wide stone bridge, from which you can see a magical and magnificent skyline including the Mighty Prague Castle in all its eminence, when walking in from the Old Town side. It is the perfect setting for a romantic walk, but for that you need to catch the bridge either early morning or late evening as during the day can get very busy, bustling with traders, tourists and musicians. The sunrise and sunset is absolutely incredible, shimmering off the smoothly worn stone surface of the bridge, making it a resplendent glow. Legend has it that the bridge is magical, and if you were to throw a coin off the edge and make a wish, it would come true.

The history of Charles Bridge

Until 1841 Charles Bridge was the only way to cross the River Vltava, which made Prague an important place for trade being the only solid land crossing from Western to Eastern Europe. The bridge is steeped in history and has had its fair share of disasters. Following the Battle of the White Mountain, 27 leaders of the Anti-Hasburg revolt were executed in 1621. There severed heads were displayed on the Old Town Tower as a deterrent to Czechs potentially offering further resistance. In 1648 at the tail end of the ‘Thirty Year Wars’, the Swedes occupied the West Bank of the Vltava. The heaviest of the fighting took place actually on the bridge, one side of the Old Town Tower was quite badly damaged, and all the gothic décor had to be removed.

Feel like Dracula’s bride and groom, whilst wondering around this Gothic city!

The Old Town Tower is at the end of the bridge furthest from the castle, and there is another 2 towers at the other end. The Old Town Tower is said to be one of the great masterpieces of gothic architecture, and it certainly is a sight to behold with beautiful ornate parapets and incredible sharp detail unmistakably indicative of the gothic era. The views from up any of the three towers are just awe inspiring, allowing you to look down on the 500 metre stretch of the great bridge sprawling its way majestically over the Vltava. The bridge is lined with 30 statues all of a baroque style, they are all replicas now but they still look very much the same as they would have. The original idea for the bridge was to make a functional construction to knight’s tournaments and the only décor until the 1600’s was a simple crucifix.

Prague is just a magical place almost eerie with all of its unmistakably gothic architecture, but it is a very friendly place very open and receptive to visitors. You will find people will be more than happy to help you and point you in the right direction. The Charles Bridge is, and has been for hundreds of years, and integral part of Prague.
According to the statistics from the recent World Travel Market event organised in London, there has been a 9 per cent increase in the number of tourists who visited Spain during the first nine months of 2011. Booking details from several Spanish tour operators at the event also reveal that Spain is still the preferred holiday destination for an increasing number of Britons, with a special focus being on the Balearics (comprising Ibiza, Minorca and Majorca), which played host to nearly 24 per cent of 11 million visitors from UK who had travelled to Spain between January and September last year.

Tragedies Early in the Holiday Season

Several travellers from Britain frequent various tourist destinations in Spain despite tragedies that form an inevitable part of the holiday season each year. An oversupply of alcohol coupled with fantastic balcony views seems to be a lethal combination that has claimed many a young life on Majorca. Three such deaths have recently occurred over a span of one month. Charlotte Faris aged 23 years lost her life in a tragic fall from a hotel balcony, within hours of arriving at Magaluf, a popular holiday resort at Majorca. A couple of weeks ago Benjamin Harper, 28, met the same end while on stag party holiday while Adam Atkinson, 20, slipped down at hotel stairwell to meet his end at Magaluf. While this year’s holiday season has begun with three fatal accidents, there are quite a few other visitors who simply managed to survive severe injuries.

Local Authorities Gear Up to Welcome Visitors

With an increasing number of visitors expected to Majorca this year, local authorities are gearing up to face the challenge of ensuring a safe and comfortable stay for the visitors. They are even contemplating on restructuring the balconies at the hotels to simply limit the free fall to the next balcony. However, summer resorts in the region with an abundant supply of drinks, drugs and entertainment options continue to tempt young visitors. Hoteliers Association at Magalluf and Palmanova who express immense respect and courtesy towards their guests are seriously considering the introduction of a code of conduct to control unruly and irresponsible behaviour of a few problematic visitors in order to improve the holiday experience of many, who look forward to a great time in Majorca.

Additional Flights to Palma de Majorca

Tour operators this year have lined up several additional flights for tourists planning to visit the Balearic Islands especially Majorca based on the experiences and trends of the previous year, according to which nearly 20 per cent of travellers who arrived in Spain on low-cost airlines, flew directly into the airport at Palma de Majorca. Majorca welcomed as much 80 per cent of tourist traffic to Balearics last October, a clear increase of 15 per cent when compared with year-on-year statistics. Interestingly 90 per cent of traditional airline traffic to the Balearics also landed at Palma, indicating the increasing popularity of the destination. The budget airline company, Ryanair plans to operate four flights from Palma this year, spanning 47 routes in total, 17 of which are new routes that include flights to Stockholm, Maastricht and Cork.

Accommodations in Majorca

With a large number of tourists expected to visit Majorca this season, the property markets too are eager to make the most of the holiday season. Those who are tired of hotel accommodations and the standard yet appealing holiday resorts and can afford a holiday home could of course opt to buy an apartment on the picturesque island with all amenities, including communal swimming pools and private terraces. Others can always rent out farmhouses or villas to spend quality time with family and friends. Majorca is a favourite holiday getaway for most Europeans as it is easily accessible at just three hours away from Ireland or UK. Prices are affordable with food and drinks easily available at relatively cheaper prices. A fantastic choice of holiday resorts, several clean and clear sandy beaches, and coves lining the Mediterranean Sea, and a great climate throughout the year, add to the attractiveness of the destination, which is all set for a great holiday season in 2012.
You'll need to plan your family holiday carefully in order to see all you can, so here are just five suggestions for great days out.

Anglesey Sea Zoo
The zoo was started in 1995 when a stranded dolphin appeared on the island's coast. It was happily rescued and housed and the theme in the zoo has been one of conservation ever since. There are planned and approved captive-breeding programmes and this is one of the few places in the world where short-snouted seahorses have been successfully bred and sustained. Elsewhere you can see impressive conger eels, a shark pool and the Lobster Hatchery of Wales can be found here. Don't forget to visit the puffins while you're on the island.

Caernarfon Castle
There has been a castle here in Caernarfon since the late 13th century but that original motte and bailey construction is dwarfed by the vast structure that lies here today. This is one of the best preserved castles in the whole of the United Kingdom and is rightly listed as a World Heritage Site. The castle has been at the heart of much of the country's history and played a key part in the English Civil War. It was repaired at the beginning of the 20th century and its exhibits today are testament to its rich history.

Greenwood Forest Park
Located in the foothills of picturesque Snowdonia, Greenwood Forest Park offers a fun day out for all the family, including children of all ages. This is an adventure park with rides and attractions that can accommodate toddlers through to young adolescents. For the younger children, there is the Giant Jumper – an amazing bouncing pillow - and the Crocodile Maze among many others. For those just a little bit older, there is the excitement of the Moon Karts, Mini Tractors and Archery, while everyone can enjoy the barefoot trail which takes you back through history.

Llandudno
Choosing a town or village to base yourself in could be the trickiest decision you have to make when staying in Wales but Llandudno, on Wales' north coast, is perfect for many reasons. This is one of the best seaside locations in the country, with a charming bay and a superb beach and there are plenty of hotels in North Wales within easy reach of the town. During your stay in Llandudno you can see the fine Victorian Pier, which is arguably the best in Wales, or you can visit the incredible recently discovered Bronze Age copper mines. Alternatively, if you just want a relaxing break away from the pressures of it all, the beach and bay provide a perfect backdrop.

Tree Top Adventures
For older children who have energy to burn, Tree Top Adventure in Snowdonia is a perfect location. The ropes course is a high-level obstacle course which winds through the forest at tree-top level and is one of the most thrilling activities in the country. Safety is paramount, with helmets and harnesses provided and while this is more suitable for older children (above 4ft 3 inches in height), it is great fun for adults too.
Viva las Vegas

The Google Car, Image Source: Nevada DMV
Google has just received the go ahead from the Department of Motor Vehicles in Nevada to test driverless cars in the city of Las Vegas. Although this will be a fully functioning driverless vehicle, it will still require at least two people to be in the car at any one time. The car will operate by using range finder lasers, video cameras, radar sensors, and Google maps data to guide itself autonomously around the streets. It can ‘see’ the obstacles around it, whether they be human, vehicle, or stationary objects, and can steer itself around the streets to avoid these obstacles. If something were to go wrong, then the passengers have the ability to take control through the brakes or steering wheel. What the Car Sees, Image Source: Nevada DMV According to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles press release the new self-driving cars will be fitted with a red number plate displaying the infinity symbol to distinguish them from normal vehicles. Once usage of the vehicles has passed the test phase and the vehicles are being used by the general public, the autonomous vehicles will be distinguished with a green license plate.

So What Does the Future Hold?

OK so this is all very impressive, massively impressive in fact. But what does it really mean for our lives of the future. I don’t know, but I’ve got some ideas. Some of which are pretty simple, some others perhaps a little more imaginative.

1.) More Free Time
If we don’t need to drive then some of us will have a lot more free time on their hands each day. For those people that spend an hour commuting for work each way that’s an extra 2 hours in the day. 2 hours! Can you imagine what you could get do with an extra 2 hours each day – that’s an extra 10 hours per week, or more than an extra full day of office each week! I don’t know about you, but I’d love to have an extra day every week. Nice :)

2.) Less Accidents
I’m sure there will be some hiccups, but technology like this is surely to lead to less accidents. This is obviously a great thing. Enough said.

3.) No Taxi Drivers
I imagine that autonomous vehicles will take the place of taxi drivers pretty quickly. They will be cheaper to operate, will be willing to work non-stop around the clock, and will likely generate a return on the investment relative to their human cousins pretty quickly. Given that in some places around the world you can already order a taxi via an iphone app and track its location in real-time, I imagine that it won’t take long before were ordering self-driving cars.

4.) Augmented Reality In-Car Advertisements
Flowing on from the driverless taxis, I think it’s not too great a leap to imagine a future where people have the option to have the cost of their journey subsidised by in-car advertisements. I think that this would operate in much the same way as free applications for a smartphone – if you want the non-advertisement model then you pay more, if you’re happy to see some ads then you pay less. This is likely where Google sees a lot of opportunity. It would dovetail very well with their recent Project Glass announcement. If you’re envisioning being driven around the city by a car that has a number of advertisements, information, and augmented reality enhancements super-imposed onto local businesses and public amenities, then I figure you’ve conjured up a pretty likely image. I don’t know about you but I think this is a pretty cool version of the future. Couple this new hands off driving experience with some renewable energy powered vehicles and we’re really floating in happy Jetson-ville. Bring it on!

This post on Google’s foray into the land of vehicular transport was written by Steve Wilter, a guy who’s imagining the day when he will be able to Watch Movies Online during his daily commute. Steve looks forward to finally seeing a true automobile on the streets.

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.resort-guides.com/2012/05/driverless-cars-on-strip-viva-las-vegas.html" title="Driverless Cars On The Strip? It was an imperial capital for much of its ancient history, ruled by sultans and kings from the 11th century onward. The architects designed truly wondrous structures that defied all logic: great gardens in the midst of a desert, enormous towers that stood the test of time while dynasties rose and fell around them. For visitors to this North African country, there are a few sites that simply can't be missed. Never mind two hundred years of American history; in this land, centuries are mere blinks of an eye.

The Koutoubia Mosque towers over Marrakech, visible for miles in every direction. It was originally built in the 12th century, and its name derives from the Arabic word for 'bookseller', since the area surrounding it was once a lively manuscript market. The tall minaret, or tower, reaches 221 feet into the air, sitting on top of six rooms and adorned with copper globes.

The structure is actually the second mosque in the area; when the first one was built, it was discovered that it was not exactly aligned to face Mecca. The Almohad dynasty, who'd commissioned the holy temple, ordered a second, properly aligned mosque to be built. The two structures stood side by side for many years until the old one collapsed due to disrepair; its ruins can still be seen in the desert sands.

Students in 14th century Morocco may have attended the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the largest Islamic College in the country. It was founded by the Marinid sultan and contains 130 dormitory cells, centered around a beautifully carved courtyard made of cedar, stucco, and marble. In accordance with Islamic law, the decorations do not represent any humans or animals, and instead consist of thousands of intricate inscriptions, patterns, and geometric mazes. This site is no longer a school, but was opened as an historical site in 1982.

The Saadian Tombs are a recent discovery, on an archeological scale: explorers stumbled onto the ruins in 1917, and they were restored for public viewing and have become a major attraction since then. The complex contains the bodies of members of the Saadi Dynasty, who ruled Morocco from 1554 to 1659. The most beautiful room is definitely the tomb of the twelve columns, which is made out of cedar and marble and finely carved—a fitting resting place for the grandson of sultan Ahman al-Mansur.

Green Thumbs Ahoy

It seems impossible that lush orchards would grow in the blistering heat of the Moroccan desert, but Marrakech has quite a few of them—and they're not there because of the latest high-performance technology, either. The Agdal Gardens, for instance, were built in the 12th century by the sultan of the Almohad Dynasty, and enlarged seven hundred years later. The gardens, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contain oranges, figs, lemons, pomegranates, and figs, as well as olive trees lining the walkways. The entire plot is 1.9 miles long, irrigated by an underground network of channels that brings down water from the High Atlas Mountains.
If you're traveling abroad but are at a loss for where to go, these 4 exotic destinations are perennial list toppers for the well-traveled and daydreamers alike.

Greenland

Switching things up a bit, if you're planning a
trip during the summer and live in a region where the temperature often
tops the century mark, consider a cooler destination for a change.

For
travelers willing to weather temperatures that reach just above the
freezing point in the summer months, Greenland offers a wide range of
opportunities to have fun. One of the most famous attractions is the
scientific marvel, the Northern Lights. Also worth considering is a
by-land or by-sea tour of the wildlife, from the majestic whales of
Greenland's coast to the muskoxen that date back to the last ice age.
Visitors can even explore the ocean life and discover species of fish
and plant life native to the region, as well as ship wrecks. And of
course there are a long list of cold-weather activities to choose from
such as dog sledding, skiing and snowmobiling.

One thing
visitors should be sure to experience is Greenlandic cuisine. A nation
sustained by a meat diet, the options include, whale, seal, reindeer and
muskoxen meat. The menu varieties are unique to the region and denote
the cultural traditions of hunting and community.

New Zealand

With "Adventure Capital of the World" as its motto, New Zealand is a must for every traveler. It's comprised of the North, South and Stewart islands, along with a healthy scattering of smaller islands in between. Travel between the islands is available via train, ferry or bus, and visitors are guaranteed some of the most beautiful scenery in the world with sights like the idyllic coastline, a lush forest, mountains and volcanoes.

The list of activities for adventure seekers include base jumping from the highest point in the Southern Hemisphere, hiking, swimming with dolphins, or body-board rafting, also known as river boarding. Visitors won't have a second to spare.

Peru

The most famous destination in Peru is Machu Picchu, the Lost City, and deservedly so. A trek through the vast ruins of the Incan Empire will provide visitors with an experience they'll surely never forget. The 4-day journey takes travelers 700 years into the past.

For traveler's looking to learn more about the lives of the aboriginal Uros tribe of Peru, a tour through the floating reed islands of Lake Titicaca offers a glimpse into the lives of a people that predate the Incas. Also recommended is a plane tour of the Nazca Lines, ancient geoglyphs in the Nazca dessert whose origins remain unknown. And if you're looking to lounge on a beautiful beach, Mancora offers a postcard-perfect backdrop.

Ibiza, Spain

The last recommendation is for those looking for a break from the stresses of life and a chance to party. The island of Ibiza transforms into a party island during the summer months with the top DJs in the world playing weekly at some of the most famous nightclubs in the world. If you're looking to spend your time partying and lounging on the beach or a yacht, Ibiza is the place to go.
With the good news that airlines such as easyjet and Ryan Air are increasing the frequency of flights to Paris from regional airports in the UK we thought it helpful to spotlight one or two of the wonderful things to do and see in the French capital

Here we take a look at some of the obvious and not so obvious things you can enjoy in Paris.

The Eiffel Tower

A trip to Paris wouldn’t be complete without a trip up The Eiffel Tower. This historic landmark made of wrought iron latticed tower was built in 1889 as the arch and entrance to the World’s Fair, celebrating 100 years since the French Revolution.

The tower is 320 metres high and is the most visited tourist monument in the world (and it’s not even a wonder of the world). It was a supposed to be a temporary structure but has remained ever since. Those who want to get to the top of the tower can do so for €14.00 per adult and the fitter amongst can also walk to the 2nd tier if you feel up to it.

Segway Tours

The Paris Segway tour is a fantastic way to see the key attractions of Paris and orientate you with their whereabouts without crippling your legs. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Segway’s they are a battery operated two wheel scooter, which are self-balancing, and are operated by leaning (very slightly) in the direction you want to go. The tours offer a great insight and some really cool facts into the city’s history from your very own tour guide, plus it’s really fun to zoom around Paris and become an attraction in your own right to envious onlookers. For those who haven’t used a Segway before don’t worry, you get a 20/30 minute familiarisation lesson before you set off. Tours can be taken during the day or at night and are €85.00 per person. If you don’t fancy a Segway then the open top 2 CV tours are also great fun, but best reserved for sunny days.

Eating and Drinking

The French capital is renowned for good food but for a cool and lively place to go and eat, drink and enjoy the night life in Paris you should consider The Bastille. If you are looking for a restaurant with a view and something a little more a la carte then the Cafè du Trocadéro is a fantastic restaurant which looks down through the Trocadéro park, over the river and onto the Eiffel Tower at the end of it. On a sunny day the view and atmosphere is fantastic, quiet and intimate.

Why not see what deals are available for airline tickets and the bank holidays, and see if you can get even more out of your trip by checking when the clocks change.

Family Friendly Activities In Amsterdam

Amsterdam has a reputation as being a more adult holiday destination. However there is far more to Amsterdam, as the city does have some family friendly attractions too.

image: Travel Treats

NEMO Science Centre

Perhaps one of Amsterdam's boldest attractions, NEMO was designed by architect Renzo Piano, and resembles a half submerged ship. It stands majestically on Amsterdam's Eastern Dock and is an instant draw for anyone in the mood to explore. It is full of remarkable, interactive displays, from small terminals to huge activity areas. The exhibits are also very well spaced out so it never feels too crowded, even with parties of school children that often attend.

Plantagebuurt

The Plantagebuurt walk is a beautifully scenic excursion that allows you to take in some of Amsterdam's most arresting views and architecture. Starting near the NEMO Science Centre, you can begin your stroll through this attractive neighbourhood, which includes the original guild house of Nieuwmarkt Square. You can also enjoy the fascinating flea markets or immerse yourself in culture and visit the Rembrant House Museum.

Artis Zoo

Also in the Plantagebuurt district is Artis, Holland's longest serving zoo. Now nearly 200 years old, there's still a wide variety of animals for kids to see and enjoy. You can even pop along during feeding times of animals such as vultures, sea lions and penguins, as well as more carnivorous animals. The Artis also boasts a fascinating botanical garden, aquarium, planetarium and butterfly pavilion.

Cycling

Amsterdam is one of the worlds most bike-oriented cities and riding a bike is second nature for the locals. Because the city is designed around bike riding, there are many routes that are perfectly designed to cycle around. This is a brilliant way of seeing the city, and cost effective too, with many bike rental companies in the city who cater for families with children of all ages.

Canal Trips

If you're done pedalling the historic streets of Amsterdam, you can see it from a completely different angle. Amsterdam's canals provide a network of intriguing transport ways throughout the incredible architecture of the city. There are over 100 kilometres of canals that make for a rewarding exploration, and you can easily see how Amsterdam has a reputation of being 'Venice of the North'.

Guest contribution from I Dream Elephants who offer a range of delightful outfits for children, with brands such as the Netherlands' Imps and Elfs clothing.

Amstelpark

The Imps & Elfs clothing, the factory lies in
the south of Amsterdam, where you'll find Amstelpark. It's free to get
into Amstelpark, and the rides and attractions are very reasonably
priced. Keep your children entertained with the activity playground, or
take them to see the chickens, goats and donkeys. You can also take the
mini Amstel Train to the miniature golf course.

Why Spring is the Best Time to Visit Norway

<!--[if !mso]>

Why Norway?

Norway is one of the world’s most spectacular countries,
and truly a magical place to visit anytime of year.

Due to its relatively high
costs, for many it is a once in a lifetime holiday destination. It is therefore
advisable to plan ahead for your time in Norway to make sure you get the
most from the stunning Scandinavian country.

Northern Lights

For me, spring is an ideal
time of year to visit Norway
as you get the best of both worlds. Temperatures aren’t as low as mid-winter
and days aren’t as short, plus as it is not high season prices are a little
cheaper. One of Norway’s
biggest draws; the Northern Lights are often still visible at this time of
year, and watching them from the milder nights is definitely more enjoyable
than mid-winter. The best areas to spot the natural phenomenon of dancing
lights in the sky at night are places out of town, in more remote areas, with
the least light pollution.

Spring Blossom

As the snow melts away
from low-lying areas, the grass returns to a lush shade of green, and apple
blossom covers the orchard trees found throughout the awe-inspiring fjord
region. This is one of the most beautiful times to visit the western coast
where the majority of the fjords are located, as the deep blue of the water
contrasts fantastically with the green sheer slopes of the mountains which are
sprinkled with apple blossom, and topped with the last of the season’s snow.

National Day

Norway’s national day, the 17th May, is a big
deal all over the country. Up and down Norway, newly washed streets become
alive with parades, people dressed in their national costume, live music and
festivities. The buzzing atmosphere is sociable, and with just about all of the
population outside, it is a great way to meet people. Plenty of hot dogs and
ice-creams are eaten and ample beer drunk.

Lower Prices

As Norway is the
second wealthiest country in the world, prices reflect this. Sadly this does
make Norway holidays
expensive to many, so avoiding peak times (and costs) are an ideal way to save
a bit of money. Spring time is not considered high season, so make the most of
it! Not only are accommodation and transport prices lower, but tourist attractions
will also be quieter.

Spring in to Action

Year-round, Norway has
plenty of activities on offer. One major perk to visiting during spring time is
that both winter and summer activities are available. Ski resorts usually
remain open until April, but some glacier resorts stay open throughout the
year. Both downhill and cross-country skiing are popular in Norway, along
with snow activities such as dog-sledding and snow-mobiling. More synonymous
with summer holidays;
fishing, hunting, hiking, cycling, plus a seemingly endless amount of
water-sports are popular too.

Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it? Well, the World Islands of Dubai are a set of manmade islands that exist nowhere else. What’s more, when viewed from above they look like a map of the world floating on the southern Arabian Gulf. It’s a great place to relax as well as explore, so if you intend to go Dubai, then there are seven must see places you shouldn’t miss.

White beauty

Shadows and white stone form a place of patterns in darkness and light at sunset time in the Jumeirah Mosque. It’s pure whiteness and beautiful architecture of the Fatimad tradition brings out the beauty of Islamic art.

Into the desert

The desert safari is a mix of sand dunes, belly dancers and delicious dinner which you will partake in a desert camp at the outskirts. You get to ride a camel too and enjoy the roller coaster vehicle drive as well as have a glimpse of the traditional desert way of living in a Bedouin village. The day ends with a romantic dinner or the hookah and Hubbly Bubbly.

Ancient city

Bastakiya provides us a glimpse of the charms of old Dubai with its wind towers and distinctive architecture. For those who love a dash of the old, Al Fahidi Fort provides a scenic view with its traditionally made houses. With a museum, art gallery and an active market, it is a centre for culture.

The tallest minaret

The Grand Mosque features the city’s largest minaret and is bathed in a mixture of lime green, orange and red hued lights with a black backdrop of the sky at night. The minaret is 231 ft tall. The interior is decorated with rich calligraphy and has beautiful domes.

The dragon’s lair

Imagine a 1.2 km long structure in the shape of a dragon that is both a shopper’s paradise and a foodie’s delight with some of the best restaurants. Dragon Mart has been extremely popular since its opening in 2004. You can find a large variety of products from garments, foods, household products and even arts and crafts along with ornamental, sports and lifestyle products. It is worth seeing merely for its awe inspiring architecture as the blend and pattern of the dragon’s scales has been most artistically done.

Water for dhows

Dubai Creek abounds not only in scenic beauty but also in glimpses of historical trading links. If you dhow cruise to Al-Maktoum Bridge, you’ll find a blend of historic as well as modern landmarks meeting your eye along with the trading heritage. You can take mini boat trips to the mouth of the Creek which cuts through the centre of the city.

Bird’s eye view

Instead of taking a tour of the city by bus, you can soar high up in the sky. Take a helicopter or plane tour which throws up breathtaking images of places like Burj Tennis court which looks like a giant geen clock face or the Palm Island, golf club and Burj al Arab.

Amanda is an interior designer and finds the bathroom to be the most challenging place to design. She ripped off the wall mounted basin and replaced it with a sleek looking counter top basin. Many more such changes and the bathroom completely transformed from an old style to a chic and modern space.

Take a Trip To Nice In France

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

What makes Nice such a popular destination for luxury holidays? If you're looking for a luxurious holiday in France, Nice is
one place you'll definitely want to visit. The glamorous city has long been
popular among those wanting to relax in chic surroundings and you're bound to
have a fantastic time here. Whether your idea of a dream break involves unwinding in
boutique hotels, soaking up the sunshine or exploring wonderful attractions,
Nice is sure to be the place for you.

Fantastic weather

Given its position in the south of France
and being right next to the Mediterranean Sea,
it should be little surprise that Nice has great weather for much of the year,
where the summers are hot and the winters pretty mild. As such, you are almost guaranteed to experience pleasant
conditions and it's a good idea to make the most of this by heading to the
beach. Visit the pristine Baie des Anges - which translates as Bay of Angels
- and you're sure to agree the sandy stretch is fully deserving of its
beautiful name.

World-class culture

While many people who come to Nice spend at least a proportion
of their break sunning themselves on the beach, it's certainly not the only
thing that draws holidaymakers in their droves.

In fact, lots of tourists are attracted by the vast array of
culture on display, in particular at its museums and galleries. There are over
20 to explore, so using car hire in Nice will offer an effective way of getting
from place to place. One institution that is certainly worth visiting is the Matisse Museum, which is dedicated to the work
of the French artist who lived in the city for more than 30 years before his
death in 1954. With a range of Matisse's paintings, drawings and sculptures on
display, you can easily gain an insight into the influences behind his work. Alternatively, you can visit the Musee Chagall - which
concentrates on the creative output of Russian painter and stained glass artist
Marc Chagall, who also spent a significant period of time working and living in
Nice. Among the items on show are lithographs, Biblical prints and gouache
paintings.

Top-quality hotels

If you want a truly chic holiday, you'll need to stay in a
luxurious hotel, something which Nice has in abundance. One place that will
certainly have everything required for a relaxing break is the Hotel Negresco
which sits on the Promenade des Anglais. You have a choice of 96 rooms and 21
suites at the five-star property, each of which has been individually decorated
and features modern amenities such as LCD TVs and Wi-Fi. You can enjoy fine food and drink at the hotel's several
restaurants, including the English-style Relais bar - which has cosy velvet
chairs and wood-panelled decor - and the Michelin-starred Le Chantecler, before
enjoying a massage and manicure at the health and beauty centre. Overlooking the Bay
of Angels, the Palais de
la Mediterranee is another five-star hotel that is frequented by luxury
holidaymakers. While it is built in the Art Deco style, it has all the modern
facilities you could possibly need for a relaxing break, including a heated
pool, Turkish baths and seaside coastal restaurant, there's even a casino!

Great shopping

Many people are keen to splash the cash on some new purchases
while on a luxury break and you can certainly do this while in Nice. The old town district of the city is home to the biggest
open-air arcade in the entire French Riviera and with more than 600 shops to
visit, you'll certainly find what you're looking for, whether it's souvenirs or
handmade clothing. Make sure you also visit the Cours Saleya Flower Market to pick
up exotic plants, bouquets and fresh fruit. Although it is open six days a
week, you'll need to get here early - ideally for around 7am - to beat the
crowds!

Hotspots of Hawaii

Hawaii is the dream destination for many purely because just mentioning the name of this US state conjures up good vibes, bright colours and brighter sunshine over beautiful sandy beaches. But the stereotypical and rather dated image of Hawaiian shirts, leis and hula skirts is just what’s on the surface of the Hawaiian Islands, to please the tourists. Under the flowers and frills lie outstanding landscapes, adventure experiences and wonderful wildlife that will stay in the memories of visitors for the rest of their days, especially as there are plenty of fantastic photo opportunities from high vantage points.

The Six Islands of Hawaii

Hawaii is the largest of 6 islands that make up the US State of Hawaii. Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai and Maui are the names of the other islands in the belt, with Kauai being the oldest and northernmost island.

Each island has its own special selling point. Kauai has its coastlines, canyons and river; Oahu contains the capital of Hawaii and also the infamous Pearl Harbour and the famous Waikiki beach, and the other islands have a good mix of different volcanoes, plantations, national parks and beautiful beaches to explore.

The Big Island

Hawaii Island, also known as “The Big Island” has the most for families to see and do. It’s a popular honeymoon hotspot and is also becoming a popular place to get married for anyone looking to escape the trappings of a traditional wedding in their home country and opt for a more intimate and relaxed affair.

For the more sporting visitor, Hawaii offers some great activities such as surfing, kayaking, scuba diving and Manta Ray diving. Surfing is hugely popular and surfers from all over the world travel to Hawaii for the surf culture and fantastic waves. There are an abundance of surf shops and shacks on the island that reflect that the surf culture is going strong and growing.

The Hawaiian coast is also the ideal place for diving as there is so much sea life to see in the clear blue warm waters. It’s not uncommon to spot hump back whales, sea turtles and dolphins, and around 20% of the fish species found on the Hawaii coastlines haven’t been spotted anywhere else in the world. For those that prefer spectating rather than sporting, cruises are the perfect way to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Las Vegas, the “Entertainment Capital of the World” attracts millions of people each year. The scintillating lights, the casinos, the fancy hotels, the fast cars, the livelihood and the general youth of the city are just a few reasons why people visit Las Vegas. But besides all the glitz and glamour, Las Vegas offers plenty of attractions that are [relatively] family friendly. For when you get tired of gambling and fine dining, take a break with these “think outside the box” attractions.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation:

This national park attracts more than a million visitors each year. The park is only 15 miles away from the city of Las Vegas, so if you have an extra day, make a trip out and spend the day in awe. The Red Rock Canyon isn’t your average park. Don’t head in expecting a lush forest. What you should expect is desert beauty.
Red Rock Canyon is made of fossilized sand dunes. However National Parks Las Vegas tree service does have somewhat of a presence within the park, seeing as the park is home to a variety of native desert plants, trees, coyotes, golden eagles, bobcats, mountain lions and so forth. If you aren’t a nature person, not to worry, there is a 13 mile scenic drive. Read on for the next suggestion!

World Class Driving:

Have you ever dreamed of driving a Ferrari 458, Lamborghini Gallardo, Mercedes SLR McLaren or a Bentley Continental? Well for a day you can! World Class Driving is a company that allows you to drive around these bad boys around the track or for a road tour around the Red Rock Canyon. They offer 4 types of tours starting at $399 for 30 miles and 3 different supercars! Whether you’re looking for some speed on the tracks or a nice scenic drive, World Class Driving can fulfill your big person dreams.

Jeff Civilico Comedy Show:

Instead of spending your night in a stiff suit or an uncomfortable dress, head over to the Jeff Civilico comedy show for a few laughs. Civilico was voted best comedy show in Las Vegas by guests on Trip Advisor. Guests have been more than satisfied with the show and the price tag that comes along. For less than $30 per person, you get both a show and dinner at Planet Hollywood! Check out one of his videos to get a glimpse of what is in store for you:

Bellagio Fountains:

The Bellagio is part of the Las Vegas Strip. It is one of the most famous and popular visited hotels and casinos. It was inspired by the Bellagio in Lake Como, Italy. The Bellagio Fountains is one of the main attractions of the hotel. Essentially it is a large synchronized dancing water fountain. The show runs everyday at night. From Monday to Sunday, it runs every half hour from 3pm-7pm, it runs every 15 minutes from 7-midnight. It is the perfect place to take that special someone, for a girls night out photo, or even for a family stroll after dinner!

Cirque du Soleil:

After you check out the Bellagio Fountains, head inside the Bellagio for an unforgettable performance with the Cirque du Soleil! The Bellagio has a permanent venue for Cirque du Soleil performances. Currently, there are 7 shows including “O”, Mystere, The Beatles LOVE, Zumanit, CRISS ANGEL Believe, Viva ELVIS and KA. The most popular show seems to be “O”, but they all have something great to offer. Take the family, friends, or spouse to go see some people in awesome costumes doing awesome tricks!

There are majestic mountains reaching up to rolling skies, The Danube Valley, the glorious Pannonia Plain Steppe. So, what happens and where can you find it all? Take a flight to any of the super efficient airports and head off out into the lush countryside.

The Alpine region, known as the Alpbachtal, is found in the west. Land management with traditional farming techniques have ensured that this natural environment is largely unchanged with beautiful countryside. To see all the local tourist spots, its useful to invest in a WildschonauCard – it’s a one off card for access to cable cars, farm shops, museums and guided tours.

The Montafont Valley is the perfect place for anyone who wants to walk, trek or use mountain bikes. The bike trails range from 2 - 25 miles long, and travel through some decidedly lush woods. The Zillertal Valley offers up great food and wine – it’s big on organic produce, so you can expect some of the finest and freshest food you’ll ever try. Farming here is little unchanged, with cows producing marvellous milk – which in turn is developed into about 30 types of local cheese! And of course, there is the Tirol region, with its century’s old walking trail and known as one of Europe’s most beautiful long distance footpaths. Whether you are an experienced hiking looking for a few challenges, or someone who enjoys a leisurely stroll, the Tyrol is perfect walking country. The Eagles Walk leads you across meadows and mountains – and yes, the flowers of spring are spectacular.

The Bodensee Vorarlberg is an area made up of several countries, so there are German, Swiss, Austrian influences here – and it’s also known for its dedication to music. Lake Constance is the setting for some it’s fabulous music festivals and a floating stage hosts spectacular opera performances! Feldkirkchs Poolbar Festival is held over six weeks during July and August. It’s held in an ancient indoor swimming pool complex and the focus is art, fashion, music – and great party nights which work really well in this echoing, atmospheric building. If you want something a little more contemplative, try the music of The Abbey of Heiligenkreuz, where Cistercian monks have embraced technology and produce their own recordings of Gregorian Chants.

There are several bargain flight operators that travel to Austria, including Easyjet so pack your walking boots and sunscreen and revel in the crystal clear air of this special place.

Travel Insurance Advice For Dummies

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

Ahhhh.....travel insurance. The old favourite of large travel
companies who simply love to force it upon us, sometimes scaring us into
thinking that if we don't make that all important purchase we are simply going
to be doomed from the 'get go'. The fact of the matter is that purchasing travel insurance for your trip
isn't such a bad idea, but clearly what you buy and how much you are covered
for is solely down to you.

So what do you buy?

Travel companies and insurance brokers will tell you that
you need to expect the unexpected and these days you can get insurance to cover
just about any eventuality. Do you really need to be covered for late
flight delays? Yes! If you were relying on a connection of flights to get you to your far
flung destination and one missed connection is likely to cause complete chaos
for the rest of your travel itinerary, then you may want to seriously think
about it.

In essence, think about where you are going, what you are going to do
when you get there and purchase enough to cover those eventualities. Basic
coverage should include medical treatment when away as this can be expensive,
lost or stolen goods, e.g. passports, money, credit cards, luggage etcetera and
finally possible cancellation in case of illness or death in the family.
Anything else should be on an 'as required' basis

Check you're not already covered

Before you shell out your hard earned cash on travel
insurance it might pay you to check to see if you are already covered. This is
not as daft as it sounds. If you happen to be in the position whereby you are a
premium customer with a bank or credit card company, then you may already have
travel insurance, so check the small print.

Find the best deals

Travel insurance prices can vary enormously, depending on
what you are covered for and where you purchase it from. In fact you can
sometimes pay up to five or six times the price. So it really does pay to shop
around. By checking price comparison sites and not settling for the first deal
you come across, you stand a good chance of making some great savings.

Tthere you have it, some great travel insurance tips that
you may want to take on board. So now you can go and enjoy your trip and feel
safe in the knowledge that you are at least protected for your needs.

Skiing In Whistler

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

The Gap Year Of A Lifetime

Taking a gap year can be a rewarding experience and is a
year to make your own and have many positive experiences. If
you're a reasonable skier, then you might be interested in becoming a snow board
or ski instructor at Whistler. Home of the 2010 Olympics, Whistler in Canada is
famous for its plentiful snow and pristine ski slopes and as well as learning
how to become an instructor you'll also learn other valuable skills such as
leadership, presentation and commitment, which will be looked upon favourably
by future prospective employers.

Whistler
ski jobs on the slopes are limited in numbers as the Canadian High Commission
only issues a certain number of work permits each year. In order to qualify for a work permit you
need to be aged between 18 and 30, hold a full UK passport, and be able to
cover your expenses in Canada for the first three months ($1000 per month).

The jobs mainly entail teaching youngsters basic skiing
skills on the slopes whilst at the same time working towards a ski instructor
qualification, namely level one, which then allows you to give lessons to the
children on the slopes. You'll work between 30-40 hours a week (this can vary
according to the season, guest numbers and snow conditions) and wil earn around
£5.50 per hour with two days off a week to ski. The pay is sufficient to cover
accommodation, food and socialising.

You'll feel instantly at ease on arrival in Whistler and
since so many people are there for the same thing as you. Whistler is a great place to
hang out and as it is the “bear capital” of Canada and chances are you will see one
of these great beasts. Getting around is easy too as Whistler has an amazing
bus system which runs well after the bars are closed and $65 will give you
unlimited bus trips a month. Whistler is buzzing every night and
there's plenty of nightclubs and bars to keep you entertained. There's also a
few retail shops to be had and a Re-use centre where you can pick up cheap
quality goods that have been left behind by the previous year's seasonal
workers.

Whistler is a wonderful place to spend a year and what could
be better than being paid to do a sport you love? It's the chance of a
lifetime, so grasp it with both hands!

Small or Large Ship? Choose to Cruise

What to Choose? Small Ship or Large

Going on a cruise is as much about the journey as the multiple destinations. Many people plan their next sea voyage based on the season or port, but overlook one other crucial aspect: the ship’s size. The differences between cruising on a small or large ship go far beyond the number of passengers. The lifestyle, focus, activities, dining choices and a multitude of other variables are dramatically different depending on the boat’s size. Weigh the pros and cons before you decide whether a large party cruiser or smaller, more intimate liner is right for you.

Passengers

A larger cruise ship generally houses anywhere from 1000 to 5000 passengers, while a smaller ship holds less than 500. Many small cruise ships sail with only 150 passengers onboard, making for a more personalized experience. The number of passengers isn’t as pertinent at sea as it is once you leave the boat. Don’t be surprised if you cannot find a seat at a local restaurant or stand in line for several minutes at a port shop when you traveled on a large ship.

Ports

If you’re looking to cruise to popular destinations such as the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Hawaii or Mexico, sailing on a larger liner is the better option for you. Many smaller liners stop at these same ports, but they also visit places that bigger ships simply cannot access. If you want an adventure to a remote island off the coast of Canada, Alaska, or even the North Pole, boarding a smaller ship is your only option.

Activities

Simply getting to your next port on some liners means spending several days inside the confines of the cruise ship. Large cruise ships offer a variety of distractions in the form of musical reviews, magic shows, pools, climbing walls, water slides, casinos, art auctions, talent shows and other activities. Smaller liners don’t have the space to accommodate elaborate productions, and the onboard entertainment is often limited to a movie, lecture or piano bar.

Dining

The limited amount of space translates into a limited amount of dining options on small cruise ships. There are typically only one or two restaurants with a fixed schedule and a limited amount of menu choices. If you want more variety and dining freedom, a larger cruiser is the better option. Bigger ships house several restaurants, buffets and bistros with a more diverse menu selection, and you might even catch a show while you dine with the ship’s captain.

Price

Pricing is a tricky subject and you have to research what is included when you pay that upfront base fee. If you’re planning to stop at many ports and participate in sight-seeing tours, a smaller liner is generally cheaper, because the accompanying destination fees are included in the price. With many larger ships you pay extra to participate in the land-based tours. If you’re limiting the time you spend on shore and want to spend the majority of experience enjoying the ship, a larger cruise liner is generally less expensive because the base price covered your onboard entertainment, meals, taxes and accommodations. This base price is also generally more expensive on smaller ships. Read the fine print carefully to determine what is included with your package, before making that final decision.

Children

Traditionally, cruising was about enjoying a romantic adventure with your significant other. This mystique was shattered when cruising became the new family vacation. If you want to bring along the entire brood, choose a larger cruise ship. There are several voyages that cater specifically to children and have several activities that will keep them distracted between ports. There are a handful of smaller cruise ships that offer family-friendly voyages, but for the most part, steer clear of the diminutive boats if you want to keep the kids happy and occupied.

Schedule

The greater number of passengers doesn’t allow larger cruise ships to offer scheduling flexibility. If you want to limit your time ashore at major port cities to visit popular sites and attractions, choose a larger cruise ship. If you’re after a more personalized experience and want to explore the ports on your own terms, small-liner cruising is the better option.

Atmosphere

If you want to board a lively party vessel that emanates a sense of excitement and fun, a larger ship is the way to go. The larger boats are more impersonal, but the hustle, bustle and liveliness of the voyage makes up for the crowds. Smaller cruises offer a sense of intimacy where you’re allowed to take in the scenery and explore exotic cultures. If you’re outdoorsy and want to commune with nature and relax, sail on a smaller boat.

Medical Needs

If you have a pre-existing medical condition that might require care, board a larger ship with an on-board physician and clinic. Many smaller boats aren’t equipped to handle emergencies, forcing passengers to wait until the next port to seek proper medical attention.
