This set of small plastic creatures was hand-molded from a self-made color-changing plastic. As the environmental temperature increases the frogs slowly adjust their color and become white. Great for fun in the bathtub, too!

Abstract

The aim of this paper to highlight the enabling powers of participative architectural design strategies and thus leaving space for uncertainty and surprise, with a particular focus on the work of Responsive Design Studio, a young emerging practice based in Zurich and Cologne. The playful synergies that can result from a constant dialogue between designer and user, object and function and the successful application of digital design and fabrication techniques as new, encouraging tools rather than dominating drivers are exemplified in a number of international projects that the studio has realized within the past few years.

Introduction

Architecture is creation, and it is creative. But it is not only the process of envisioning space and use that needs to be of compelling spirit. The fantasy of creation does not end when the built form is finished. The user himself has a constant impact on his immediate environment, resulting in continuous transformation and interaction. This demands a process of participation where the user is deliberately asked for input and engagement. Participation thus means that designer and user join forces in a playful act of creation.

The act of playing is a process of learning, of taking over responsibility while being inherently creative and joyful. Playing means direct interaction with the environment, personal engagement and building knowledge. While playing children learn and develop social and emotional behavior it also empowers them to express themselves and their unique identity.[1]

The focus of Responsive Design Studio is to revive this playful experience and to forge a constant dialogue between designer and user, between object and function, allowing for engagement, growth and change. The studio`s projects leave elements of design open, and users are encouraged to participate with their own input - whether this is creating the equilibrium of a floating object, or adapting the spatial layout of an exhibition design. The concept and objective of the studio is that the projects do not function to their full extent unless the targeted user becomes actively engaged.

As design and research platform, the studio is not focusing on any technology, technique or material in particular. The interest is not in becoming specialists in one area but in a sensitive use of the tools at hand. The studio´s design approach is thus playful in both conceptualization and the use of computational applications as well as in the attitude towards architecture referred to as the art of manufacturing. The manufacture is equally process and product comprising designer and user as producers of space and creative energy.

Projects

The Cone

“The Cone” is an interactive installation, which was first realized at the 2007 Burning Man Festival in Nevada, USA. The project has since then evolved and as of 2009 become a yearly attraction at the Voodoo Experience Festival in New Orleans.

The cone-shaped sculpture measures nine meters in height and five in diameter. It consists of a two-layer structure inspired by the principals of Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov, due to leading requirements regarding weight and structure.[2] The inner cone is fixed to a base platform, which also works as the entrance from below, and the outer cone is rotatable attached to the top of the inner and a bottom rail on the platform.

Ensuring this flexible bearing the outer structure can be revolved by manpower around the inner one.[3] Due to the filigree lattice construction method this overlap of layers creates a visually stunning, atmospheric interference effect and especially inside “The Cone” provokes the impression of being part of a giant machine.

As Burning Man, also described as “an annual experiment in temporary community”,[4] gives any participant the opportunity for radical self-expression, many art installations require interaction as crucial contribution to complete the pieces.[5] The Festival thus presented a perfect playground for building and running the first prototype of “The Cone” as an interactive architectural installation.

Since the piece at Burning Man was very labor intensive and not durable enough to allow for multiple rebuilds, the second version has been improved in a number of ways. Formerly handmade wooden pieces were replaced by digitally designed and water-jet cut aluminum parts. These lightweight blades are joined together to form the horizontal rings, which in turn hold the transparent PVC tubes that make the structure. Moreover an interactive lighting system was developed by David McCallum and Allan Day in Toronto. An Arduino microcontroller measures direction and speed of the spinning structure and transfers the signal via DMX to twelve high power led bars attached to the base platform. Through this, and the inherent properties of the PVC tubes to transport the light, “The Cone” appears entirely different during nighttime.

Float with the Flowers

“Float with the Flowers” is a series of manually transformable sculptures that can both work on land and as swimming islands on water. The project emerged from the winning selection of the 2009 “Beam Camp” competition.

“Beam Camp” is a five-week summer program for boys and girls aged 7 - 17 in Strafford, New Hampshire, USA. The camp fosters hands-on skills in the fine and manual arts while exploring experimental thinking, design and the creative process. Each year a Project Master is assigned to propose a unique large-scale cooperative project that campers build and enjoy.

The project “Float with the Flowers” was designed for the particular location of the camp within a deep forest and next to tranquil lakes. Inspired by the rose of Jericho the approach suggests a toy that transforms from a land use towards a floating water occupancy. The structures stand closed on shore and slowly blossom open once they’re pulled into the lake and can then be used as swimming floats.

Each sculpture consists of four petals, which are flexibly attached to a central hinge that gives the piece stability when standing. The sculpture, when floating measures about four meters in diameter and has a height of two meters when standing. Every petal is essentially a space-truss, comprised of 68 wooden balls in 17 variations and 196 wooden dowels in 21 different lengths connecting them, which is filled with inflated plastic tubing to make it swim. The structure is digitally modeled in McNeel Rhino and parametrically processed in Grasshopper. This setup not only allows to adjust the form and dimensions dynamically but also produces all necessary information, regarding angles and lengths of the dowels automatically. This data is then translated into a set of easily readable templates in order to drill the balls in the correct points and thus receive the dowels at varying angles. Throughout the prototyping and design process various alternatives to produce the ball-nodes were investigated, including five-axis CNC milling, injection molding or casting in various materials. But, since in this project the physical making and educational aspects of understanding and making such geometries were in the foreground, any kind of prefabrication was discarded. However, looking back a certain amount of ready-made elements would have made production and setup much easier, faster and in cases also more playful.

“Architectural Particles” exhibition design

The exhibition design for “Architectural Particles” at the MAKK - Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln, is based on a digitally pre-configured and optimized modular display system, consisting of a set of polyhedrons. The project was developed with Studyo Architects and Grossgestalten (graphics) and has so far been installed twice, from May - August 2013 and again from October - November. It received the Red Dot Design Award in 2012.

When developing the system the main goal was to produce a unique and iconic framework that remains easily recognizable but allows for a large variety of exciting and unexpected design and usage options. The other important requirement was that the elements had to be sturdy enough to be set up several times and at the same time stay easily installable and enable a multitude of different arrangements.

The geometry of the display modules is based on a sphere packing method known from the structure of crystals. In the arrangement of non-overlapping spheres emerge octahedral and tetrahedral gaps. The resulting volumes remind of modular construction types from past architectural eras and turned out to form a compact and easily conceivable yet dynamic and highly adaptable system for the curators, design team and client. The polyhedral elements are made from white, glossy Vivak® plastic sheets (sponsored by Bayer Material Science), which are glued on the corners and can be combined into a variety of elements (pedestals, columns, projection surfaces, information boards), depending on the particular location and requirement.

The use of digital design and modeling tools, especially Rhino 3D in combination with Grasshopper and Python significantly simplified the creation of spatial simulations and the processing of manufacturing data. The flexibility of these tools allowed the modification of the overall design layout up until the very last moment and automated the technical processes such as unfolding the elements, geometric modifications and the creation of the different milling angles.
In this project the predominant geometrical design code was already defined at an early stage, which created a reasonable base for the development and use of computational tools in terms of partly generative-iterative, partly modeled shape configuration and the algorithm-based generation of production data. With pre-defined, rule based standards for the fabrication data a highly efficient communication with the CNC producers could be achieved. The flexibility and ease of the system to form different arrangements, tessellations and elements, actively engage the client in the spatial design process and give him the freedom to adjust and change even after the architect has long left.

Conclusion

The idea of integrating participative strategies into the architectural design process is certainly not new and in some cases even common practice. Usual attempts include polls or surveys but also workshops with future tenants and communities to give them a sense of involvement. Yona Friedman, a vivid advocate of user-focused design policies, however argued for a more radical approach. In reference to both Konrad Wachsmann and Kurt Schwitters, he suggested that architecture should provide not more than a framework, a system that he later called “Merzstrukturen”, in which the inhabitants could create their environment according to their own needs and desires.[6]
The crucial and most difficult part is to establish such a framework and to decide on how strong it has to be and what can be left open to the creativity of the user.
The projects described above represent a selection where this approach has proven to be fruitful, but there have also been other attempts, which were not so successful. While the studio has over time developed strategies and templates based on experience and research it is still impossible to predict entirely how a project will be received and used, since it is always strongly dependent on the personality of the respective user. But this kind of uncertainty also makes it very exciting since it allows for unforeseeable development, evolution and surprise.

abstract

Similar to the 18th and 19th century industrial revolution, we are, today, in a process of societal change driven by the 'digital revolution', that, among other factors, significantly influences architecture and design. While information technology and digital, rule-based, robotic processes already dominate large parts of our private and business live, industrial processes still primarily govern the production of (consumer) goods.

But although industrial production still dominates the building and design industry, digital techniques have helped in reinstating basic principles of craft production in which material and form are naturally intertwined into a tradition of making. Hereby digital manufacturing processes are rather related to the principals of crafts than industrial production as they emphasize the qualities of the materials used and provide higher flexibility during the development and production process.

Thus the methodology of the object development process changes: the design development process reaches up to the last produced model in a product series. In the same time the production cycle starts with the first prototype object. In this lecture Sebastian Bächer and Hans Sachs present various personal and cooperative mostly experimental works and projects, which focus on the increasingly blurring boundaries between design, development and production.

FOLD Passagen 2014 Cologne

A pavillon made of 3000 vinyl records and a modular furniture landscape made of folded AluCoBond® octahedrons have been developed and realized by a team of young architecture students and makers for the Passagen2014 in Cologne.

Hans Sachs of responsive design studio in cooperation with students of CIAD (Cologne Institute for Architectural Design), Superartitecture Studios, the Dingfabrik Köln e.V. (Cologne's first FABLAB) realized two experimental architectural design installation on the Passagen 2014 by continiouing the student's elective course Folds 'N' Spaces (Summer 2013) at the faculty of Architecture at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences. The two installations have been developed and produced at the "Labor für Experimentelles Bauen" (faculty of architecture) and assembled in the big studios of superartitecture for the "Passagen 2014 Köln" from Jan 13th until Jan 19th 2014.

Oooglow

Oooglow is a lampshade made from phosphorescent polyester resin.
It's shape is generatively designed based on the same principles as the Tong-Zi-Dan series.

Defined by certain preferences an unlimited amount of forms can thus be produced.

In the present case, the dimensions of the shape and amount of faces were determined by the bed-size of the available laser cutter and foldability of the polypropylene sheet which was used for the mold.

The production is based on a rotational molding technique, also similar to the Tong-Zi-Dan gypsum vases.
However the polyester plastic makes for a much more durable and solid object. The procedure involves mixing 700ml of polyester resin with 100g of phosphorescent pigments. When the pigments are fully dispersed 28ml (4%) of hardener are added and the solution poured into the mold. The mold has to be continuously rotated for about 20 minutes until the resin has solidified. The mold can be removed after 12 hours of curing. It takes another few days until the object is completely hard.

The lamp is equipped with a LED light which doesn't heat up the plastic but sufficiently charges the luminescent pigments.

Once the light is turned off the lamp emits a greenish glow over a period of several hours.

Together with Marcel Odenbach, Hans Sachs from responsive design studio runs a workshop 2D>3D at the KISD Open Factory at the Köln International School of Design.

The 2-day event with various workshops and panel discussions on Nov 29th and 30th addresses the open scource and maker movement and brings people from different professional fields together to experiment, develop and fabricate. Students can still register for several workshops on the conference's webpage (above).

Like every year in November, our ConeV2 was part of the Voodoo Experience Music and Art Festival in New Orleans, LA, USA. For more pictures of the event click here..

Beside well known bands like Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails and Kid Rock, the Cone was -again- one of the main attractions on the festival area in New Orleans City Park. The Cone has been installed at the festival every year from 2009.

Cardboard Lounge at National Museum of Denmark

For our client WHITE LABEL EVENTS GmbH we provided furniture and accessoires for a "Cardboard Lounge" in the National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen.

The event took place in the spacious entrance hall of the museum on October 23rd. The Cardboard Lounge was part of an exciting event with live acts and gala dinner hold by a German cardboard producer to invite international clients.

RE-USE of "architectural particles" exhibtion design

At superartitecture (facebook page) and Stephan Braungarth Fotografie the exhibition design and display system of "Architectural Particles" has been re-configured for fotoshootings, parties and exhibitions (i.e. Passagen Köln 2013)

The modular display system has been created and developed by responsive design studio in collaboration with STUDYO architects and the MAKK - Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln for the exhibtion "Architectural Particles - Modular Building Construction in the Digital Age" from May to August 2012. The exhibtion design was then already re-used for the "Köln Design Preis International" organized by the "KISD - Köln International School of Design" and MAKK.

Symposium Transmaterial Aesthetics in Berlin

Hans Sachs of responsive design studio has presented his paper "bended - material and process informed design computation" at Transmaterial Aesthetics Symposium in Berlin at the Aedes Network Campus Berlin, on October 2nd, 2013(see programm below). We especially thank Prof. Matthias Ludwig (Hochschule Wismar, Fakultät Gestaltung) and AA Dipl. Sandra Loschke (Faculty of Design Architecture and Building, University of Technology Sydney) for the organisation of the event. The symposium abstracts can be downloaded here.

In the Symposium Transmaterial Aesthetics various lectures of architects, designers and producers have been presented and discussed experiments with timber in architecture and technology.

Spatial Positions 5 - The Land Workshop

From 31.08.2013 - 22.09.2013 the exhibition "Spatial Positions 5 - The Land Workshop" at the SAM Swiss Architecture Museum displays important steps the collaboration project "The Land", which is located in the north of Thailand near the town Sanpatong, twenty kilometres southwest of the city of Chiang Mai.

"The show itself functions as a workshop anticipating the realisation-phase planned for the year 2014. In addition, London-based graphic designer Zak develops a new alphabet for the Land Workshop that is based on the participatory logic of the "corps exquisite". Final Presentation of "Folds & Spaces" at CIAD

One of the concepts will be chosen by a jury to be realized as "CIAD pavillon" in the courtyard of the faculty of architecture at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences.

CurveCube

CurveCube is a very spontaneous proposal for a walk-through, human-scale pavilion made from corrugated cardboard.

The design connected two geometrical forms. Towards the outside it represented a closed cubic shape but merged into an organically appearing surface on the inside.

From the original project description (in german) "Architektonisch entsteht ein Spannungsfeld zwischen der Komplexität der Innenform im Kontrast zur formalen äusseren Kubatur in einem sich gegenseitig beeinflussenden und durchdringenden Formenspiel zwischen Klarheit und Vielschichtigkeit."

Strongly influenced by the original Eames Elephant from 1945 this piece of kids furniture was designed and prototyped early 2012. It was produced from 3M Alucobond and milled using a 3-axis CNC router at ETH Zürich's Raplab.

Dingfabrik Köln e.V. gets new workspace

The Dingfabrik Köln e.V., Cologne's first and community based FabLab, where Hans Sachs of responsive design and our partner Sebastian Bächer of Tischlerei Bächer GmbH are active members, moves from the the old "Deutz Gasmotorenwerk" to a new 500 sqm workspace in Cologne Nippes.

The old warehouse-like spaces offer a great opportunity to enlarge the Dingfabrik's member group of 50 people and make it possible to implement a much bigger wood workshop with new digital fabrication opportunities, like industrial robots etc.
In addition the open spaces invite every member but also not-yet-members to organise events, exhibitions and conferences in and around the FabLab scene.
Soon - in August/September 2013 - the self financed and built laser cutter (60 Watt/ 1200x600mm), the 3-axis mill, various 3D printers and all workshop equipment will be moved to the new place.
Interested ones are always wanted and very welcome to help to build up the Dingfabrik spaces.

Hive Cardboard Chaise Study

Hive is a cardboard chaise was modelled and shaped based on the 3D model of responsive design's chaise product "Floater".

The modified 3D shape was then run through an algorithm that creates a 2D parts-based system of sliced cardboard sheets which will be connected in 3 directions (Chick 'n' Egg Chair -> 2 directions). The so called "Quarter Iso Grid" is a Grasshopper definition based on the construction principles of Mike Sheldrakes cardboard surfboards. Apart from this chaise study we also work on design on demand based (Grasshopper) and processed cardboard surfboards in a cooperation with the Dingfabrik Köln e.V. (Cologne FabLab Association).

Folded PenCup

this folded pen cup was developed by exploring simple curved foldings with HyLite® by 3A Composites. The composite material is usually milled on both sides of a sheet to have a flexible fold but here it resulted perfectly for a fixed, one-side-milled folding in terms of stiffness, material stability and bendability.

Quarter Iso Grid Cardboard Surfboard Study

Inspired and led by Mike Sheldrake's cardboard surfboards we created a fully parametric grasshopper definition, that generates a cardboard connector system as 3D model. With this tool, which we created in a "spare time project" , you can load in and process almost any surfboard shape you want...

The Grasshopper definition unrolls, numbers and layouts all edge curves to be cut by a laser cutter.
After having cut and assembled all parts we followed Mike's great glassing instructions on his webpage. This is the result of our study so far.. further pics are coming when finished and tested in the North Sea..
