When I run, so does my nose. In the winter this isn’t really a problem because it’s cold and the long sleeves were practically invented for this problem. Spring and summer, sans sleeves, the nose running is an issue. I’ve tried wrestling to get the bottom of my tank top up to the nostril area, but that just exposes things, which is OK in the woods, but this spring I signed up for a 15k…

This is a 30 minute solution–The Nose Wiper!–made with the oh-so-soft ReStitch Yarn!

The Nose Wiper Demo

So many people at the race loved the nose wiper. Evidently the runner’s nose is a common problem. I had some requests to plain old purchase the nose runner itself, so those are for sale here. If you’d prefer to knit your own, here is the super simple pattern:

With less than 10 yards of ReStitch Yarn and size 10 DPN (double pointed needles), cast on 24 stitches.
join in and knit one round
k2 p2 for 2 rounds
k for 4 rounds
k2 p2 for 2 rounds
cast off knit wise and sew in ends to neaten it up.

Oh yeah! Ready to run! Wash and line dry when it gets <del>snotty</del> dirty.

ReStitch Yarn used in project:

52 yards of super chunk in “Pink Is Your Signature Color”

beach chair frame all shined up

old beach chair--loving the duct tape...

Tie a nice secure knot around the back side of the chair frame, then unravel the ball across the seat and around the frame on the other side once, then go back. From here on out, it’s just around and around the frame until you reach the front. Make sure you keep the yarn tight!

beach chair seat and start of back

When you get there, do the same thing to end that you did to start, go around the frame once, go back across the seat, around the frame once and then tie off securely.

Repeat this same process on the back of the chair. Next comes the harder part…With a big finishing knitting needle (not the kind you knit with, the kind you use to sew in ends) starting at the back of the seat, weave the yarn over and under each strand of the seat as close to the frame as you can get. When you get to the front, pass the needle back through the little triangle you just created and tie off the end. Repeat on the other side of the seat. This ties the seat together. Repeat this whole process on the back of the chair. Weave in your ends and that’s it!

This is a design alternative for the Babester Orig. It creates a flat knitted front instead of the knobby purls. Still simple, still sweet.:) You’ll need 45 yards of ReStitch Yarn, needles, a biggish button (as big or bigger than a quarter), and a needle to weave in ends.

Using size 10-15 needles (depending on how tight you want the stitches), CO 15

Row 1: knit

Row 2: knit through the front and back (kfb) of the first stitch, knit to the last stitch, kfb

Row 3: knit

Row 4: repeat row 2

Row 5: knit

Row 6: repeat row 2

Row 7: knit

Row 8: k5, purl to last 5 stitches, k5

Row 9: knit

Repeat rows 8 and 9 until the bib measures 7 inches (or desired length) from the bottom, ending on a purl row. Switch colors along the way if you want to.

Next row: With the knit side toward you, knit 7 and begin casting off by slipping the 6th stitch (already knitted) over the 7th. This will leave 5 stitches on the right needle. Continue casting off by knitting one and slipping the the previous stitch over until there are 4 stitches remaining on left needle. Knit these 4 stitches so there are 5 stitches on each end of the needle. These begin the collar of the bib.

Next row: Knit 5, slip the next 5 stitches onto a stitch holder. Knit the 5 stitches on the needle until the collar measures 5 inches (or desired length).

Next row: Shape the button hole. Knit 3, pull 2nd stitch over the 3rd to cast off, k1, pull the previous stitch over, k1, pull the previous stitch over, knit the last stitch. There should now be 2 stitches on the needle (one on each end).

Next row: Knit 1, finger CO 3 stitches, knit 1. There are now 5 stitches on the needle and the button hole is formed.

Next row: cast off and shape the button hole as you weave in the loose ends.

Go back to the other side of the collar and pick up the 5 stitches.

Knit 3 rows and then cast off. Use the loose end to attach the big button and there you go! Another fabulous Babester! Please feel free to ask any questions or comment on the pattern. And check out the ReStitch Facebook page. Happy knitting!

This is a really simple knitted pattern for a Kindle Fire and doesn’t take long at all. ReStitch Yarn provides ample protection given its chunky, sturdy nature.

This pattern takes 150 yards of ReStitch Yarn. When buying yarn, try to get balls with roughly the same yardage and weight. This will assure the same thickness and width for the entire pattern. I used five vibrant colors though I wouldn’t change colors on the flap part again–just because when you flip it open, you can see where the ends are weaved in. In the pocket part, obviously this doesn’t matter, so get crazy with color if you want to. You’ll also need size 10 straight needles, 2 buttons about the size of a nickle, and a needle to sew in ends.

OK! Get your bevvy of choice ready, and set yourself up with all necessary comforts. I’m a fan of my doggie on my feet, and, if it’s Saturday morning, NPR on the radio.

Using size ten straight needles, cast on 18 stitches using a long tail cast on.

Knit 6 rows.

row 7: knit 3, purl 12, knit 3

row 8: knit

Repeat these two rows for a total of 75 rows. Get funky by changing colors at any time if you want to.

Next row, with the right side (knitted side) toward you, knit 9 and bring the 8th stitch (already knitted) back over the 9th to cast off. In this way, cast off 3 more stitches for a total of 4 stitches casted off, knit 6. This should result in 7 stitches on the right side of the needle, a space of 4 and then 7 more stitches.

Next row: knit 3, purl 4, finger cast on 4, purl 4, knit 3. 18 stitches total. You have just created a hole for the power button, etc.

power button hole

Next row: knit

Next row: knit 3, purl 12, knit 3

Repeat these 2 rows ’til just shy of desired length. I repeated for a total of 24 rows.

Knit 4 rows.

Next row form button holes: Knit 3, finger cast on 3 stitches, knit 12, finger cast on 3, knit 3.

Last row: cast off all stitches.

With the purled side out, fold up the bottom to come to the power button hole. Making sure the fold is straight, sew up the sides of the kindle cover. It pays to take your time here and sew up using a pattern. Just sew into the same spot on both sides. It looks much neater.

Sew buttons on the front, making sure they are evenly spaced and aligned with the button holes. And that’s it!

side view

Thanks for purchasing ReStitch Yarn! Yay! Happy knitting!

The Wishy Washy--a 15 minute knit

You’ll need 20 yards of ReStitch yarn. Choose a heavier weight, a 60+ gram ball. Size 10 needles work well for this, because the tightness keeps the scrubber in good shape when washing. I used the color “Awesome”, a 35 yard 68 gram ball.

Cast on 2 stitches.

Row 1: knit

Row 2: knit in to the front and back (kfb) of both stitches, 4 stitches total.

Row 3: kfb, knit to last stitch, kfb.

Repeat row 3 for a total of 7 times. 20 stitches should be on your kneedle.

Row 11: knit first two stitches together (k2tog), knit to last two stitches, k2tog.

Repeat row 11 until two stitches remain on the kneedle.

The Wishy Washy

Cut yarn. With a sewing kneedle, sew through these two stitches, tie off and weave in end. Weave in other end and enjoy being all stylish while doing your chores.

My friend Steph and I developed the idea for “drink bracelets” on a thrifting/eating/drinking excursion to Portland. I mean, 95% of the time, the bracelets can be used as the cute adornments they are, but for those times, and you know those times, these bracelets can be helpful. Let me introduce the Hangover Helpers. Knit some up in no time and give them to the gfs on your list.

To use as Hangover Helpers, stick about 6 (or your drink limit) of these beauties in your purse and head out for the night. As you order each drink, put a helper on your wrist. Keep visual track of the number of drinks consumed by the number of bracelets you have on. No more bracelets=no more drinks and a better tomorrow.:)

Choose any color ReStitch yarn, and using a size 10 DPN, cast on 20-24 stitches (that’s my wrist in the picture and I can wear a cast on of 20 or 24 stitches).

Divide stitches to 3 needles and knit one round. Here you can get creative by adding in a different color or different yarn for fun textures, or you can make it big and bulky by adding more rounds. For the “Hangover Helpers” I recommend skinnier bracelets because you might want to keep them in your pocket or purse before use.

Cast off. Love the instant gratification! Tie off and weave in ends to the under side (flat side) of the bracelet to complete the bracelet as seamlessly as possible and that’s it! Well, that’s it if one drink is your limit. Knit ‘em up!

You can find ReStitch Yarn, 100% recycled and upcycled yarn from thrifted t-shirts, at Happyknits in Skowhegan, Maine, at the Merchant Company at 656 Congress Street in Portland, Maine.
