A good cover letter tells the employer who you are and what you are seeking, that you know about the particular employer and the kind of work the employer  does, demonstrates your writing skills, demonstrates your commitment to the work, shows that you are a good fit, and shares your contact info (1b).

Another few strategies are, first, insure your letter matches your resume in presentation and style. Make the margins match and all those other small details that make a big difference (2a)

You should also make it a point to find out the name of the hiring manager before sending the application in order to know address the cover letter properly. Keep in mind the purpose of the letter is to gain attention. Cut straight to the chase and don’t bother with the small details. Summarize what you can do for the company without a total reiteration of the resume (2b)

You should also limit the number of sentences beginning with “I” as much as possible.One should focus on the job and the employer’s requirements. One of the best ways to do this is to refrain from using first person references at the beginning of your sentences (2c)

Your current address should be aligned with the center of the page or the left margin. Under your address you should include a telephone number where you can most easily be reached (i.e., your cell phone) and email address. The date is included under that contact information.The body of the letter is single spaced with a line between each paragraph. The closing of the letter (“Sincerely” and your signature) should be two lines below the last line of the letter and either in the center of the page or aligned with the left margin, consistent with how you set up the top of your letter (2d)
