This is another one of those hidden gems in Community Server that is still alive and well in CS 2008.

It not only allows site administrators to set the registration mode for new users to "invitation only". But if want to have it both ways like I do then set your new user registration to "email" and then just browse the URL manually for the invite page. IE http://yoursite/user/InviteUser.aspx

This way people can find your site on their own and register, which requires them to use a valid email. While also allowing site administrators the ability to send invites as well.

WizardsSpace.net is Born

With all the exciting new features in Community Server 2008 I decided it was time to move to a new domain.

WizardsSpace.net is born which IMO is very cool, hope others think so too! I also setup all redirects so that old links will nicely send you to the same content on the new URL.

If I have missed anything please let me know, I am still working a few little issues but so far so good!

Site Upgraded to CS 2008

Since the release of Beta 2 for Community Server 2008 seems pretty rock solid.

That and the fact that I could not wait any longer to check out the new features, so I decided last night I would upgrade my community. I only ran into 2 small issues which I will list below and also provide the steps I took to work around both of them.

1. Default Theme Issue - In CS 2008 there is no more them called Default in both the blogs and the site theme's foolder, when upgrading can cause errors after upgrade is complet and you try to view the site. WorkAround: delete both default folders in your upgraded site (\Themes\default and \Themes\Blogs\default) This should force IIS to reload the site and also correct the theme, I also went into the default settings for blogs and set the default theme to Hawaii.

2. File Storage Issue - In CS 2008 the Photos, Files galleries are merged into a Media gallery, when upgrading some files that were migrated into the upgrade tool did not get migrated into the new Media file storage folder. WorkAround: Move the files manually after the upgrade from the upgrade tool (CS2008_4.0.30324.1516.upgrade\CSUpgrader-Beta2\filestorage) to the new location (root of your site\filestorage) in your newley upgraded site.

Graffiti 1.0 Released

We are very pleased to announce Graffiti CMS 1.0 is now available for download and purchase.

The 1.0 release includes many bug fixes from beta 2, a brand new (non-blog) default theme, works under Mono, and includes integration with the new Graffiti MarketPlace*.

There were way to many people at Telligent who made major contributions (code, marketing, copy, documentation, testing, etc) to the project to list them all here, but without all of your contributions we would not have such a high quality 1.0 release.

I would also like to take a few seconds and thank all the folks who submitted bugs and suggestions to us via email and over on the forums. Your feedback has really helped make Graffiti a much better product.

Finally, for those of you who took advantage of our introductory pricing, your licenses should be arriving later today.

* The MarketPlace is a new member of the Graffiti family. It is currently a list of available themes, but will soon become the central place to find, share, and purchase themes, widgets, and plugins for your Graffiti site.

Graffiti CMS Beta 2 Released

Graffiti Beta 2 is now available for download. If you have not yet checked out Graffiti CMS now is the time! Beta 2 has some really cool new features like the Home page feature, which allow you to set a single post or a group of posts as the only content shown on the home page.

If you already are running beta 1 then what are you waiting for upgrading is a snap!

Also I would pick up a Graffiti CMS license today while they are still @ $99 this is a really hot deal!

Graffiti Themes

You may have noticed over on my Graffiti blog that I am sporting a nice new theme thanks to the efforts of CS MVP Dave Stokes. He has converted quite a few themes over to GraffitiCMS and seems to be adding new ones almost daily, way to go Dave!

You can check them out and download them for free here. They are a snap to install since all they are is a single xml file that you simply just upload through the Graffiti control panel.

Great Things about 2007

I was just thinking about all the really awesome things about 2007 and thought I would list my top 5.

   1. Joined Telligent FTE
   2. GraffitiCMS IMO one of the greatest asp.net applications in existance
   3. That Zune thing, Zune 2 firmware update and Zune Social
   4. Xbox360 Elite finally got one had a little red ring of death and had to be replaced
   5. Made my first batch of HomeBrew - Brown Ale not bad

Rob Howard sets the record straight on Graffiti-vs-WordPress

GraffitiCMS has not even been released yet (in beta currently) and already the controversy is starting!

Rob Howard CEO of Telligent sets the record straight on a few misunderstood snippets that have been going around, check out his great post titled "WordPress community hating on Microsoft"

Personally me being a non programmer and more of a systems guy I can tell you that I find ASP.NET very easy to work with and GraffitiCMS was a snap to get up and running. Techincally speaking we are working on making GraffitiCMS crossplatform compatible and easy to migrate to from other applications like Community Server and WordPress.

If you have not checked it out yet then what are you waiting for get going!

Getting Ready to Head to Dallas

It's holiday party time again and this years Telligent holiday party will be my first!

I decided since I never dress up that I would rent a tux, I have tried to convince some of the other attending Telligenti to follow the leader but so far not much luck there. So it looks like I'll be the master of ceremonies I guess, LOL! Rita is coming with me and this is her first trip to Dallas so y'all roll out the red carpet for her and win me some (I want to move to Dallas) points.

We fly out very early Friday morning so we should be able to hit Telligent HQ about lunch time, I am very excited as I always am when heading to Dallas.
